UMSU, ASBC advance motions on pro-life groups

MSU and the Arts Student Body Council (ASBC) both put forward motions last week opposing “coercion” by groups on campus concerning reproductive choices.

The motions come after recent protests by the Revolutionary Student Movement (RSM) in opposition to pro-life campaigning on campus, primarily by the Canadian Centre for Bio-ethical Reform (CCBR).

CCBR has campaigned a pro-life stance several times on campus this year, handing out literature while wearing torso-length billboards featuring graphic images labelled as early-stage aborted fetuses and ultrasounds. The group is not affiliated with the university and is not a student group.

The RSM, which is a student group, responded with pro-choice signage and literature.

The motion from UMSU, which will come to a vote on Nov. 8 and was moved by president Jakob Sanderson, suggests UMSU amend one of its position statements to support “a woman's right to freedom of reproductive choice; and a woman's right to be free from coercion or attempted coercion with respect to making reproductive choices,” and oppose “any act of coercion or attempted coercion with respect to making reproductive choices.”

In an email sent out to arts students Monday, ASBC president

Julius Chester wrote “recent events at the University of Manitoba have led ASBC to adopt a position that, while respecting the rights and beliefs of groups and individuals, is focused on student safety in the university environment.”

“We wanted to sort of establish something a little more clearly on whether this is something that we’re okay with continuing on our campus or not” — Jakob Sanderson, UMSU president Sanderson said the UMSU motion can be amended, but as it currently stands will focus on opposing coercion specifically, and pro-life groups would be allowed to continue meeting on campus should it pass.

“What UMSU is opposing and prohibiting is coercion, or attempted coercion, of anyone with regards to

reproductive choice,” he said.

“So we’re not saying you can’t have pro-life beliefs, you can even still be a student group that has pro-life beliefs, you can hold meetings to talk about issues that are important to you. However, what we don’t want to see any UMSU-affiliated groups doing is using their student group status and their booking status and even potentially funding to coerce or attempt to coerce someone.”

Sanderson added graphic imagery would “definitely not be permissible.”

The UMSU motion states that while the union recognizes the right to free speech, it also acknowledges that right should not be used to violate other groups’ right to feel safe on campus.

Sanderson added that cases of coercion within such groups would be approached on a case-by-case basis, referencing a situation earlier this year in which the U of M pro-life student group Students for a Culture for Life was the cause of complaints from students due to content it was presenting while tabling.

According to Sanderson, the materials were confiscated by UMSU, and after referencing the UMSU safe environment policy, it was determined the group violated the rules and the table bookings were revoked.

“We wanted to sort of establish something a little more clearly on whether this is something that we’re

okay with continuing on our campus or not,” he said.

Sanderson noted that while the motion would affect all UMSUaffiliated student groups, CCBR exists outside of that jurisdiction and UMSU would not be able to request they leave campus.

is a public space,” he said.

“So the university doesn’t even have full jurisdiction over that. We certainly don’t.”

The ASBC motion, which was presented by its LGBTTQ* representative Christina Trachenko, would prohibit “graphic images and the targeting of vulnerable individuals” within the arts complex.

Chester explained the possible new bylaw would focus on limiting violent imagery in ASBC spaces, including posters throughout the arts complex.

“Groups who would display insensitive images, not that it was a problem before in the past, but they would not be allowed to present their images in ASBC spaces [...] the arts lounge, for example,” he said.

“We would also work with the faculty of arts to ensure that their presence in arts buildings would be, or at least the presence of graphic images, would be limited.”

Chester said he was “made aware” of the UMSU motion by ASBC and UMSU representatives, but the two groups did not collaborate on the motions.

He added ASBC would be voting on the motion “during reading week.”

Reinventing patient-to-patient networks

hile the inherent vices of social media continue to make headlines, online patient support groups are making a strong case for the upside of social media.

Chair of the education committee of the Manitoba chapter of the Canadian Hemophilia Society (CHS) and U of M graduate Milena Pirnat gave a lecture on the Bannatyne campus Friday as part of the Bold Ideas Colloquium Series

on the role social media can play in healthcare.

One group was explored in particular — the Facebook group Hemophilia Mother, which Pirnat founded.

The group creates a virtual support space connecting patients and families of people with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders from around the world.

Hemophilia is a rare genetic con-

dition passed from mother to child.

Only males can be hemophilic, while females are carriers.

Due to the complete or partial absence of a protein clotting factor that normally helps the blood clot, hemophiliac patients bleed longer than others. The severity of hemophilia varies from mild to severe, with severe hemophiliacs bleeding spontaneously for no apparent cause.

There is no cure for the condition

but prophylaxis — regularly administering blood-clotting treatment — and on-demand therapy promote the quality of life of persons with hemophilia.

Hemophilia comprehensive care clinics, like the Manitoban chapter of the CHS, have a hematologist, registered nurses, social worker, physiotherapists and psychological service available by demand.

“Management and care is kind of dealt with through the system,” said Pirnat in an interview.

“But there is [still] a lot of coping strategies that are needed [...] I thought that more is needed than just [learning how to infuse factors].”

When Pirnat considered what families dealing with hemophilia needed, it became obvious a wider support network was key.

“I thought maybe there was a need for patients to talk to patients,” she said.

Pirnat, herself a carrier with an adult hemophiliac son, recounted receiving her son's diagnosis in 1997.

“When I went through the process [of raising my son] I thought that often you might feel alone,” she said.

“This is a very rare disorder and so you don’t have people to talk about it and you don’t have anybody who would understand basically what hemophilia is about. That part for me, being an immigrant and being isolated and not having family and not having a support system if you have a child that has [this condition], I thought that other people felt the same.”

According to Pirnat, a virtual group where people can reach out, anonymously or otherwise, “ends isolation because this is a rare disorder.”

In her presentation, Pirnat characterized the types of questions and support messages members typically post.

comparing treatments, information about new non-profits and support groups, scientific literature articles, requests for emotional and spiritual support and inspirational messages of hope and support.

“Most questions are [centred around] emotional support and education,” said Pirnat.

Pirnat found despite the overall positivity within the group, some risks still exist, including concerns about privacy, members soliciting, selling and promoting treatments and unintentional but well-meaning medical advice that could be misleading. Pirnat recalled once being forced to deal with members soliciting other member posts to drive propaganda toward another page.

In the letter, the woman — a carrier — recounted her experience receiving her son’s hemophilia diagnosis and expressed gratitude for the group’s support.

“It is helpful as emotional support, as mentoring for some people, as an education and practical advice,” said Pirnat.

“In a way, it does build a community and a platform for people to feel comfortable in it.”

Lecture criticizes representation in education U of M prof says reconciliation efforts in “very early stage” SHAUNA MATTHEWS, STAFF

innipeg educators gathered to discuss flaws in the education system, including lack of representation, at Forth Café Oct. 23.

The lecture was part of the U of M’s extended education division’s dean’s lecture series.

Dean of extended education Gary Hepburn said the lecture intended “to bring current thinking as well as information about initiatives to the city of Winnipeg.”

Speakers included Dorota Blumczynska, executive director of the Immigrant and Refugee Committee of Manitoba, and Jordan Bighorn, program manager of pathways to education at the Community Education Development Association (CEDA).

U of M native studies professor Niigaan Sinclair also spoke at the lecture.

One of the main issues raised addressed where the speakers believed Indigenous students and

students new to Canada are being failed in the education system.

“The biggest challenge that we face within our community is that education has been the most brutal, violent, coercive and assimilative tool for Indigenous peoples,” Sinclair said.

Blumczynska noted Indigenous and new Canadian students often fail to see themselves within the education system because of the educational material being presented.

“They are not able to place themselves in their educators because they’re not ref lected in that,” Blumczynska said.

“They’re not able to place themselves in the curriculum because it also often denies — it doesn’t even touch on — their life experiences and the histories of their global communities.”

Bighorn spoke of the importance of curricular representation to the success of the students he works with at CEDA.

The reason one student in the pathways to education program stayed for nine years and graduated is because “she kept being reminded of who she was when she came to see us,” Bighorn said.

Sinclair brought up the concept of education as a primary tool for social change.

“Education for social justice, to me, is doing what the education system should actually be doing, which is offering young people visions of who they are,” he said.

choing the common slogan, “pro-choice is not anti-life” of pro-choice activist groups, many pro-life individuals would argue “pro-life is not anti-women.”

On Oct. 25, UMSU president Jakob Sanderson brought forward a motion to the UMSU board of governors to amend the board’s position statement on reproductive rights.

The motion implicitly refers to the recent pro-life campaign on campus as gender discrimination.

However, this interpretation of the pro-life campaign is misrepresentative.

According to a poll by Ipsos, 23 per cent of Canadians are not in favour of abortion. It was found a further 24 per cent supported limited abortion for certain circumstances like rape. These two groups represent a significant portion of Canadians — men and women — with the sincerely held belief that abortion be restricted.

Feminists for Life (FFL) of America self identify as pro-life feminists. This undoubtedly challenges the claim that the pro-life position is incompatible with women’s rights.

FFL holds the view that there is no right way to choose between the woman and the unborn child in a pregnancy. Instead, they believe a feminist must tackle the societal

The structural issues that position women in precarious economic positions and drive mothers into underpaying jobs are responsible for making abortion the seemingly only viable option. To overcome the barriers facing women is to overcome the principle driver of abortion.

A federal government that stands up for even a small step forward in climate justice may be our only hope in achieving any substantive policy.

Of course, professional socialization has a pretty nasty reputation.

in suits schmoozing with each other while sipping cheap wine. The worst part is you must go talk to these terrifying strangers and somehow fit into the social scene and say eloquent things about yourself all without seeming pushy or desperate.

For many of us, this is what nightmares are made of.

What signifies success at these events is the formation of new relationships that can forward your career.

But if your goal is relationship building — and these events make you cower in fear — why bother with them at all?

There is more than one way to network. How you build relationships is up to you.

Instead, take an active role in a relevant professional association or volunteer for a cause you care about.

Get a job — any job — at a company you admire and take the time to introduce yourself to the people in the roles you wish you had.

Seek paid or unpaid projects that will allow you to connect with other professionals in meaningful ways. By

working on a shared project, you will automatically develop a professional relationship.

Taking a ‘neutral’ stance on reproductive rights The pro-choice position champions freedom

everal times in the last few weeks, U of M students have been faced with demonstrations by the Canadian Centre for Bioethical Reform (CCBR), a group that holds that “abortion, in surgical, chemical or any other form, directly and intentionally kills a pre-born human being, and is therefore wrong regardless of the circumstance in which that human being was conceived.”

Ultimately, it is a cruel paradox that defenders of anti-choice demonstrators do so on the basis of freedom of speech It is not, however, the ideology this group espouses that has been the source of controversy within the university community. Rather, it is this group’s means of expressing its view — large posters of apparently aborted fetuses at varying stages through pregnancy — that have brought about significant blowback to the group and to the university for allowing the demonstrations.

The face of blowback thus far is the Action Against Anti-Choice Coalition (AAACC), a group of activist students whose mandate is to “unite student groups, organizations and individuals in the battle against anti-choice rhetoric on campuses throughout Winnipeg and across Manitoba.”

The AAACC has held counterprotests each day the CCBR has booked space on campus and circulated a petition calling upon the university administration to revoke the booking privileges of the prolife organization.

To this point, the university has given no indication it will reverse its course as the CCBR is slated for one more week of campaigning.

To be fair to the university, its autonomy on this matter is far more limited than most would think.

Given the limited scope of internal remedies, one must ask: is the scattered presence of the CCBR a large enough issue to consider overhauling existing policies and impeding upon freedom of speech?

It’s a difficult question, but one that needs one word to answer: yes.

Before laying out why this is so imperative, the other side must be acknowledged.

There are many pro-life students on campus and I respect the beliefs of each of them, even if I disagree.

But where this group offends is with its actions, not its beliefs.

Many believe taking measures to silence any group on campus — no matter what the beliefs or practices — is antithetical to the free exchange of thought a university is supposed to forge.

Theoretically, you should not have to eliminate those who you oppose by kicking them out of the arena, but instead by proving your ideas are superior.

However, the unfortunate reality is the debate of reproductive rights is not an intellectual exercise akin to those surrounding free trade or carbon pricing.

The arguments from each side rarely emanate from academic literature, but from cultural or religious upbringing, lived experience and, far too often, whether or not one possesses a uterus.

Beyond the poorly-crafted materials, there is another reason the debate over reproductive rights is disingenuous.

This debate is emotional to its very core.

Groups such as CCBR employ the evocative imagery they do out of the hope that it will strike an emotional toll on the viewer. The perverse intention of the CCBR is often realized by students with personal experience with abortions.

While many students have little difficulty looking the other way, if even just a minority of students face increased emotional barriers to their education due to a CCBR demonstration, the feelings of those students should be prioritized by our campus policies above those of a group that is not affiliated in any way with the U of M. Ultimately, it is a cruel paradox that defenders of anti-choice demonstrators do so on the basis of freedom of speech.

The implicit goal of the pro-life position is to strip freedoms from a pregnant person.

Pro-life and pro-choice are not two sides of the same coin.

The former is inherently (and legally) restrictive, while the latter simply asks you not to impose your beliefs onto the private decisions of others.

In that sense, being pro-choice is the most neutral stance to take.

I do not expect the university to amend its policies within the week. If it did, it would likely face a losing case in court. But that does not mean students should be idle.

Each day CCBR demonstrates, students are confronted by a group that lobbies our country to change what has been settled law for decades.

We must insistently advocate for the neutral position on reproductive rights — pro-choice.

Winnipeggers vote no on plebiscite to fix that pothole in front of Dan’s house MURV BERKLEY

Last week, Winnipeggers cast their ballots in the 2018 municipal election, voting for their mayor, their councillors and whether to fill a pothole in front of Dan Finkleman’s Elmwood home.

On the plebiscite question of whether or not to commit to the infrastructure project 97 per cent of valid ballots cast voted no.

A breakdown of the results by electoral subdivision showed that the poll with the pothole in it was the only one in which yes votes secured a majority.

Re-elected mayor Bram Bowflex said he would adhere to the results of the plebiscite.

“It’s disappointing to see the final results, but I will adhere to the will of the voters. I just really didn’t think that was going to be a problem though. Kind of shocked this is where we are if I’m being honest,” Bowflex

said during his victory speech, before sighing loudly and letting his eyes glaze over.

City councillor Biff Jorwaffly, who called for the plebiscite question to be on the ballot, said he was happy to see the no vote succeed, and called the proposed pothole-filling a vanity project for the mayor, adding that the people of Winnipeg clearly opposed the project.

“I was out going door-to-door for the election. Not one person I talked to was in favour of spending hundreds of dollars to fill that particular pothole,” said Jorwaffly, whose North End ward does not include the street with the pothole.

The Ivory Buffalo reached out to Dan Finkleman for comment after the results came in. His wife said he was at the auto shop getting his suspension fixed.

Manitoba Mystery Co. presents murder mystery Retelling of real Manitoban cold case asks audience “Whodunnit?”

Set in different venues each time, the Manitoba Mystery Company’s productions show the cast’s brilliant job in adapting to different environments, while still adhering to the text and providing the interactive experience intended for the participants.

he Manitoba Mystery Company’s latest production placed its audience members among the cast of Case at the Edge of the Woods last weekend at FortWhyte Alive.

The theatrical murder mystery is based on a real Manitoban cold case from 1932. Case at the Edge of the Woods is inspired by the murder of Lawrence Lees's, a First World War veteran and park warden at Riding Mountain

National Park. Despite having clues and evidence, Lees’s murder is yet unsolved.

Director Miranda Moroz, who also co-wrote and produced the play, said the production centers on Lees’ position as park warden.

Lees had many enemies who opposed his strict stand against poaching which gave rise to a cast of peculiar characters and a fictitious

Common to all of the production’s stagings is the novel experience offered to the audience member.

In lieu of being a seated onlooker, the audience takes on the role of active participants throughout the play.

Alistair Wright, who plays Kirkland Kells in the play, talked about the goal of the production.

Royal Canoe — “Peep This” from Waver — 4/5 Popular Winnipeg band Royal Canoe released a new single, “Peep This.”

The single is off of the band's new album, Waver, which is set to be released Jan. 25 of next year.

Waver marks a departure for Royal Canoe as they are looking to change their sound of old with a darker sound.

While still retaining the distinctive electric-pop sounds the band has come to be known for, they explore new ominous sounds on the album.

“Peep This” is a soulful yet awkward exploration for Royal Canoe.

Though not as danceable as some of their other work, the song presents visceral emotions with engaging accompaniment.

The band creates a kind of jerky sound with the synths and slightly off-kilter drums, similar to that of a skipping record or a car that will not start.

The song starts off with the band’s signature wavering synths, which carry throughout the song.

It creates a sense of unbalance, which is then increased with the addition of Matt Peters’s vocals, adding a layer of desperation to the song.

“Peep This” tells the story of someone trying to hold on to and sustain a relationship that has evolved and may or may not still be working.

Peters puts forth a plea in the refrain, “Don’t let it die, hold me up, hold me up/ Stay by my side,” acknowledging that troubles have ensued, but expressing a desire to try and fix things.

exist currently among students and young professionals especially, to be constantly working or studying and if this is not achieved then feelings of

unproductivity and inadequacy arise and can bleed into other areas of life such as relationships.

These anxieties are captured in Peters’s lyrics and emphasized with the dark backing track.

The song’s impact relies on the intensity of Peters’ vocals, increasing and decreasing over the course of the song, which for the most part remain fairly mellow and understated.

The variation reflects the life of a struggle, desperation increasing when faced with the potential of loss.

Though clearly removed from Royal Canoe’s upbeat and sparkling previous work, “Peep This” creates an impactful and relatable feeling of desperation while mesmerizing with the band's trademark synths and, as always, providing a distinctive groove.

he U of M Bisons rounded out the regular season on a foggy Saturday afternoon with a 38-34 loss to the visiting UBC Thunderbirds.

The herd came into the game needing to win by 10 or more to avoid the undefeated University of Calgary Dinos in the first round of the Hardy Cup playoffs.

Instead, the Bisons blew an 18-point lead and will face the Dinos next weekend.

“My fear, I think, was that we would be thinking about ‘We have to win this game, we have to win it by 10,’” Bisons head coach Brian Dobie said.

“So the theme was about the first quarter, the theme was ‘Come out of the gates hard, come out of the gates fast, win your early reps, be physical, run, fly around, don’t take a penalty, be smart,’ like all the things ideally you want a team to [do].”

Women’s basketball brings out brooms in Brandon

The Bisons women’s basketball team got the season started off right with a pair of convincing wins over the Brandon University Bobcats.

Manitoba took game one 97-84, with Taylor Randall going seven-for-10 from behind the arc and with 33 points on the night. Nicole Konieczny had 16 rebounds and 30 points in the game, going six-for-nine on free throws.

The herd kept it rolling in the second game of the weekend with an 86-61 win. Konieczny led the way in game two with 20 points and Claire Harvey had 14 rebounds, while Keziah Brothers and Addison Martin came off the bench for 14 points each.

Men’s basketball splits Bobcats

The men’s basketball team kicked off its season earning a split against a strong Bobcats team.

Game one saw the herd come away with a tight 88-78 win, but game two was even closer.

Brandon outscored Manitoba 36-19 in the fourth quarter to overcome a 16 point deficit and take the game 101-100.

The herd stretched its winning streak to four games with back-toback wins.

The Bisons opened the weekend series against the Cougars with a 3-1 win on Saturday.

In the first period, Manitoba struck first with a late power-play goal. Natasha Kostenko intercepted a loose puck in front of the visitor’s net and fired a shot over Zoe De Beauville’s shoulder for the 1-0 lead.

The Cougars had multiple early chances and carried possession for most of the opening frame but did not find the back of the net.

Mount Royal tied the game at 1-1 in the second when Breanne Trotter got control of a blocked shot and pushed it past a sprawled-out Lauren Taraschuk.

Manitoba missed a golden opportunity late in the second period when a shot from the side got past the Cougars goalie and the puck landed on the goal line.

De Beauville was able to cover the puck before anyone could capi-

talize on it.

The Bisons came out firing in the third, pushing hard to break through with the winner.

Taraschuk stopped 16 of 17 shots for Manitoba in the game.

“She was really good. She had to be good for us early,” said Bisons head coach Sean Fisher. “The one that beat her tonight wasn’t really a fault of hers.”

The Bisons women’s hockey team completed its sweep of the Mount Royal Cougars with a 2-0 shutout win Sunday.

Manitoba’s rookie netminder Erin Fargey looked confident in her first career start.

The Langdon-born goalie did not see much rubber, but stopped the 16 shots that did come her way to pick up the shutout.

“You wait and you work hard for it and when it finally comes it’s pretty sweet,” Fargey said post-game.

Fisher said he felt it was time for Fargey to see the net and “it was time to let her take the ball and […] run with it here and let her see some action.”

The opening period was fast paced and filled with scoring chances for both sides. Manitoba came close to scoring first, as De Beauville could not handle a shot up high and let the puck drop in the crease.

doorstep but was unable to bang home the easy marker and the period ended tied at zero.

The game remained scoreless until Madison Cole got Manitoba on the board in the third.

The puck was dropped to Cole at the point, she walked in and sent a shot through a crowd. The puck snuck by De Beauville’s blocker on the short side for the 1-0 Manitoba lead with 9:50 left.

“I just saw a little gap and the puck came out to me and I shot it through that gap and it went in,” Cole said.

Anderson picked up an emptynet goal and the Bisons took home the 2-0 win.

With the win the Bisons move up to second in the conference, tied with the University of Alberta Pandas in points but behind in the season series.

The Bisons will enjoy a quick bye week and return to action Nov. 9 and 10 to host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns at Wayne Fleming Arena.

Puck drop for game one will be at 7 p.m. CST and will be 2 p.m. CST for game two.

The Bisons women’s soccer team had a promising season come to a disappointing end on Friday. The herd lost the Canada West playoff play-in game to the University of Northern B.C. Timberwolves on penalties, 2-1.

Hailey Lavarias had the lone goal for Manitoba in regulation. The herd went one-forfour on penalties, while the Timberwolves went three-forfour to take the game.

Men’s hockey relives Mount Royal playoff nightmare

The Bisons men’s hockey team’s losing streak stretched to five games this weekend with a sweep by the Mount Royal University Cougars.

In game one, the Cougars were all over Manitoba, scoring six unanswered goals until Jeremey Leipsic got Manitoba on the board in the final minute of the game. The Cougars went three-for-six on the powerplay and took home the 6-1 win.

Game two was even through the first period, with the teams trading goals, but the Cougars pounced in the second to take a 2-1 lead. In the third period Mount Royal scored twice while Kamerin Nault got one back for Manitoba in a 4-2 loss.

Manitoba was upset in the Canada West playoffs by the Cougars last season and has now lost four straight to Mount Royal.

he U of M Bisons men’s volleyball team opened its home schedule this weekend with back-to-back wins over the MacEwan University Griffins.

Saturday

After suffering a two-game sweep to Mount Royal University last weekend, the Bisons men’s team was able to rebound against the Griffins with a 3-1 win.

“I was very very pleased after last weekend’s play, we lost two matches but we lost to a very good team,” Bisons head coach Garth Pischke said to Bison Sports.

“I was quietly optimistic that we were going to come out and do it again.”

Manitoba got ahead early in the contest, taking the first set by a 25-19 score. The opening set from the herd saw a quick lead snowball, carrying it all the way until Dylan Sutherland scored a kill to make it 24-18.

Dustin Spiring gave the herd the set win at 25-19 with a kill of his own, after the Bisons gave up a point on

an error.

In the second set, the Griffins responded.

“We keep getting better every single weekend” — Kevin Negus, Bisons men’s volleyball right side MacEwan took the set 25-19, buoyed by strong play from its front court. The two clubs were close throughout, until the Griffins gained a two-point lead off a point awarded by an official. MacEwan rallied around the lead, rattling off six points from eight rallies and eventually took the set.

Manitoba battled back, winning back-to-back sets by 25-22 both times.

With the Bisons up 23-22 in the final set, Spiring recorded his eighth and final kill of the game to make

it 24-22 and then a MacEwan error sealed the set and the match.

Sunday

The Bisons completed the weekend sweep with a 3-0 win on Sunday.

Kevin Negus was a nightmare for the Griffins in the match, slam-

ming down a game-high 26 kills and recording eight digs for the herd.

Owen Schwartz led the Bisons with 10 digs, while Jack Mandryk set up 43 home-side kills in the match.

The first set was a battle. Spiring recorded three kills for Manitoba as the Bisons got out to a 16-12 lead and

held on to win the opening set 25-21.

The second set was full of nonstop action. Neither team was able to go on any point runs, but the Bisons scored when they had to and won the close set by a 25-23 score.

The third set was much of the same, with some back-and-forth action.

The teams exchanged points until the Bisons held a 24-23 lead. Jordan Peters converted for MacEwan to tie the game at 24.

Negus once again took the game in his hands, slamming down a kill and then completing a service ace to give Manitoba the 26-24 set win, and the game.

“We keep getting better every single weekend,” Negus told Bison Sports. “Last weekend at Mount Royal we stepped it up and this weekend we took it to another level.”

The Bisons will be back on the court Nov. 9 and 10 when they travel to Vancouver to visit the UBC Thunderbirds. Tipoff for game one will be at 9:30 p.m. CST and 7:30 p.m. CST the next day.
