Dating app propositions UMSU board Bumble pitches services, student group partnerships TY BRASS, STAFF

S

tudent ambassadors for popular dating app Bumble held a presentation outlining its services to UMSU during its board meeting Sept. 26.

The presentation did not precede any related motion, as presentations often do at UMSU board meetings.

UMSU vice-president community engagement Kyra Fanning said the presentation was instead meant to inform board members representing student groups of Bumble’s willingness to partner and provide financial support by sponsoring student events.

“Bumble reached out, they want to connect with more student groups on campus,” Fanning said. “I suggested that they come to the meeting to talk about the student groups and what they can offer to the student groups.”

Fanning said she first pitched the idea after meeting Bumble ambassadors at a Commerce Socials event in September.

“They’re given whatever they want in terms of funding or merchandise and they’re supposed to reach out to different student groups on campus and partner with them on different events,” she said.

Bumble offered event sponsorship,

such as movie nights or bar tabs, to the union at the meeting.

The presentation focused on the app itself, explaining how students can connect with each other. Fanning noted afterward that she had hoped the presentation would centre more around what Bumble can do for student groups rather than serve as an advertisement for why students should use the app.

“Their pitch was a little more focused on Bumble itself and not on what they can provide,” she acknowledged.

Fanning said her intention was for Bumble to explain how it could provide funding to student groups and organizations.

“I thought they would open up with ‘Hey, we’re here to help, we can provide XYZ, this is more about Bumble,’ but they kind of did the opposite,” she said.

“So then the board had a lot of questions.”

Following the 10-minute presentation, a question period — also lasting 10 minutes — ensued.

One board member questioned the point of the presentation and

expressed concern it felt like an advertisement.

Fanning responded that she had invited Bumble to make sure board members were aware that they could partner with Bumble for events such as socials in order to alleviate financial constraints.

“They want to partner with more student groups and associations and councils on their events and can provide financial support as well as boosting their name as well, so that’s why we invited them there,” she said after the meeting.

Fanning said UMSU chooses what companies can present to the board by asking whether or not they can “provide value to the board,” and noted these sorts of presentations are not likely to be a regular facet of board meetings throughout the year.

“I considered them because they are actually students here — some are students here, some are at the U of W — and they’re kind of ambassadors for the brand,” she said.

Celeste Patrick, one of the Bumble representatives who delivered the presentation, said her aim was to make more campus connections.

“Our goal being at the UMSU meeting was just to get a better representation on campus because we didn’t have the connections,” she said, noting that some board members have already reached out.

“I think it was pretty successful,”

she said.

“I’ve had a few reps reach out to me and I’ve been in contact with Kyra from UMSU consistently and we’re going to be working together for the rest of the semester and hopefully the rest of the year.”

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) has accepted the City of Winnipeg's last offer after nine months of negotiations. The offer, which includes a $200 signing bonus for all ATU members, passed by a thin margin, with 51.97 per cent of ATU members voting in favour. In a press release, ATU president Aleem Chaudhary said the agreement gave the union a “strong foundation to improve transit for the riding public and our members.”

The local federal candidate debate took place Oct. 3 at IQ’s in UMSU University Centre. It was part of a larger national event branded 100 Debates on the Environment, hosted by an organization of the same name.

The national event was made up of 100 nonpartisan candidate debates on the environment taking place throughout the country on the same day.

Michael Lunn, who attended, said that while the debate had not shifted his vote, it gave him “a bit more to think about.”

“It definitely helped shine light on how some of the other candidates and parties and what their policies were,” he said.

“It was cool having the candidates come out, interact with the students a bit, take some of their questions.”

Ben Mercado-Cruz said he was happy to see a friendlier side of politics.

“I thought it really highlights how positive politics can be very productive.” he said.

“Mudslinging really has no place in a constructive democracy so that was really neat to see.”

Like Duguid, Lapointe and Bettess, he acknowledged that there was a hole left by the absent candidates saying it “would be interesting to see how the dynamic would change if other [candidates] had been present.”

ctober is sustainability month in Manitoba and the U of M is working to advance its efforts toward a greener campus.

Major projects have been put in place to improve the Fort Garry campus, the most prevalent being the strategy put forward by the U of M’s office of sustainability.

An updated sustainability strategy spanning 2019 to 2023 covers three main areas: research and academics, infrastructure and operations and campus life.

Within each there are separate goals, outlines on how the office plans to achieve them and acknowledgements of the progress the university has already made.

One of the major projects is an oncampus organics collection pilot project. Acting director of the U of M’s office of sustainability Christie Nairn said the project was born from efforts by the Arts Student Body Council.

At its last meeting the UMSU board of directors passed a motion declaring a climate emergency and demanding the university follow suit.

The motion called on the university to commit to cutting its emissions in half by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

Last year UMSU struck a sustainability working group that, according to Sanderson, has nearly doubled in size since its creation.

Sanderson said that the group’s goal over the course of this year is to develop a sustainability strategic plan for UMSU, including a thorough review of its businesses, operations and events.

“I think that it’s something where if we’re wanting to take a lot more action in terms of lobbying the university to do more on sustainability, then I think that we should be leading by example.”

he impending climate disaster being protested during the September 2019 strikes is not a problem that will be fixed on an individual level.

Thousands of Winnipeggers — including a considerable number of youth — gathered outside the Manitoba legislature Sept. 27 to join in a global series of climate strikes demanding leaders to act on climate change.

At the protest in Winnipeg there was a significant number of signs insisting that one cannot be an environmentalist without also going vegan.

In other words, they were urging people to put their money where their mouth is.

By going vegan you can cut your carbon footprint in half. The protesters implied that a vegan lifestyle is the greatest gift you can give back to mother nature.

n this day and age, it is imperative that we place substance over style when discussing political leaders.

On Sept. 18, Time magazine brought to light photos of Justin Trudeau dressed up for an Arabian Nights-themed costume party in a cape, turban and, of course, what’s Aladdin without a little brownface?

I found the entire story dumbfounding.

Over the following weeks, I’ve observed how the story has been discussed in the public sphere. Having a brown face of my own, albeit a lot more water-resistant, I found the topic to be an integral part of how I believe political discourse can move forward.

I do not believe this scandal should overthrow Trudeau’s bid for re-election. However, it does discredit the authenticity of what Trudeau presents himself to be.

If we want true social equality, then what we need to demand from our leaders is substance over appearance. We cannot allow for political popularity to derive from pretty pictures and empty words. Now, around election time, it is especially important to demand that our leaders practice what they preach.

“M

ike, do you want to bike around the world?”

That is one of the first lines in Winnipeg-born author Katrina Rosen’s new book, and was the catalyst for the adventure it was based upon.

With You By Bike: One Couple’s Life-Changing Journey Around the World was published Sept. 3 by Rocky Mountain Books. It chronicles the true story of how Rosen and her husband Mike biked around the world over 13 months and across 13,000 kilometres.

The sudden decision was motivated by years of marital turmoil.

Almost reading like a sitcom, the book describes the source of tension between the pair, calling Rosen “an adventure athlete who craves the wild” and her husband a person who typically “watches sports with his buddies.”

“We were married and we had been together for 11 years and we had grown apart, we weren’t close anymore,” said Rosen.

“We were just really struggling in our relationship, we never fought, but we weren’t connecting and we cer-

tainly weren’t in love with each other.”

Instead of a divorce, the pair opted for an international biking trip.

Rosen admitted that the trip was just as much about physically distancing herself from her feelings for another person as it was about healing.

“I didn’t think I could run away from those feelings without actually using my body,” she said.

“Just at a loss of doing anything else, we just left from our front door in Wolseley.”

The trip followed no plan, and when the temperature began to drop the pair decided to turn south and bike across the U.S. A turning point on the unexpected journey was in Zion National Park in Utah.

“We didn’t know about it before we arrived there, but it was a place that really clutched us,” said Rosen.

“We kept meaning to leave but we never left.

“It was in that place, about six weeks into the trip, that I really started realising ‘OK, we do have something worth fighting for and moving forward in our relationship.’”

With You By Bike follows Mike and Katrina through the U.S., across the ocean in New Zealand, throughout Southeast Asia and eventually to Nepal as they face robberies, flat tires and navigating foreign countries.

ctober is here and U of M Bisons women’s hockey team netminder Erin Fargey is ready to get the Canada West season started.

After a rookie season where the Bisons goalie from Langdon, Alta. suited up in just four games as backup to Lauren Taraschuk, the 2019-20 season will be Fargey’s time to shine.

Gone is the national-champion winner in Taraschuk, and in is long-time Bisons netminder Amanda Schubert, leaving space for Fargey to jump in as the de facto starter.

But she said she is going to take it

one day at a time.

“Obviously ice time isn’t given, and that goes without saying,” she said.

“So I think for me, instead of getting ideas in my head that, ‘Oh I’m going to get to play because Lauren is gone’ because that’s not necessarily the case.

“In my mind, I’m going to put my head down and I’m going to get to work. Off ice, on ice, and whatever happens, happens.”

The loss of Taraschuk at the end of the 2018-19 season did nothing to change Fargey’s summer plans. She

still trained the same and is coming into the new season with the same mindset.

“I always was behind a second-year goalie and I knew that coming in,” she said.

“So for me to get playing time, it wasn’t that I just had to wait for an opportunity — like that’s going to be given eventually.

“When you have a three-goalie tandem, it’s a competition, it’s always […] a competition, and as long as it’s a healthy competition it’s fine. But you need to learn how to work hard and you’re competing against each other every single day — that is the other team to you, in some ways that is the other team.”

After a small break from the ice in the beginning of the summer, Fargey got down to her off-season training and was in the gym “as much as I possibly could be.”

For the second-year goalie, a break from the ice is a key component to her success as it helps keep her fresh and keeps her love of the game alive.

“I love the game […] so much and I would play it every single day — but over the summer if you stop playing for a bit you start to get this feeling,” Fargey said.

“At least for me, I get this feeling where I need to get back on the ice. I miss it, I miss it so bad that it makes me anxious to get back out there.

“And then I find that I play at my best when I’m super excited to be out there.”

Fargey’s new goaltending partner Schubert will have a similar level of excitement after a year away from the game and time away from the Bisons. Having an experienced partner is especially important to Fargey and the two have already formed a good relationship.

Schubert played four seasons with the Bisons, primarily in a tandem with Dyck, before graduating and spending a year playing professionally in Finland.

Not only will Schubert bring experience but she will bring her energetic personality and vocal presence on the ice, on the bench and in the dressing room. Greig picked up her first goal of the weekend to deflate the Bisons soon after and they could not recover in the 4-1 loss.

Manitoba returns to Wayne Fleming Arena next week for its home opening series against the Mount Royal University Cougars. Game one is Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:30 p.m. CDT, and game two is the next day at 3 p.m. CDT.
