ith only a few weeks until the municipal election, politicians should be more eager than ever to make sure their constituents feel heard.

Unfortunately, this is not the case at city hall.

A $550 million dollar multi-building complex from True North Real Estate Development and Northland Properties — True North Square — concluded last week. The complex includes a public plaza, two separate office towers and luxury residential rental.

But even as the final touches of the brick and mortar were being perfected, key questions remained unanswered. Among the most important were how much True North would see in terms of tax breaks and financial incentives and what exact benefits citizens of Winnipeg could expect to see from the project.

Those questions were largely answered just a week before the square was finally unveiled to the public.

True North and Northland expect to receive a combined $8.6 million in tax breaks over the next 20 years. This is on top of the $11.8 million the city contributed to the cost of the public square for skywalks, sidewalks and other infrastructure, all on top of

A politician who genuinely cares about their constituents would be proactive, not reactionary. Instead of using the fact that a 10 per cent affordable housing requirement expired as an excuse, they would introduce new legislation and go a step further by upping the percentage, given the rising cost of living in our city.

A negotiation between True North and politicians who truly represented the city’s constituents would have included at the very least the original 10 per cent affordable housing requirement plus another several million in cash towards affordable housing. And even if the final deal was less favourable than that in the end, politicians who play hardball and collectively push for more inevitably receive more in the end.

This is how politics is played. If you show up to the negotiating table asking for a full loaf, you end up with half. If you ask for half a loaf, you end up with crumbs.

As of now, a vote for someone who takes a harder approach and truly represents their community is the best course of action.

Every year, master’s students in the department of landscape architecture’s regional studio examine planning issues and design decisions at a regional scale, including a site visit. Past regions have included northern Manitoba, the southern Golden Horseshoe, and the Okanogan Valley.

The output of this design studio, currently led by Marcella Eaton, is the creation of a sustainable resource management plan that seeks to balance cultural and natural processes in the face of climate change and in the opening decades of the Anthropocene.

This year’s studio is focused on the Thunder Bay district of northern Ontario, and students spent a week in September familiarizing themselves with the region’s geomorphology and hydrology, natural resources, vegetation and culture.

The field trip takes place in the context of geospatial analysis of broad-scale regional characteristics through use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and provides students an opportunity to experience the attributes observed

on a computer screen.

Sites visited included Kakabeka Falls, Mission Island Marsh Conservation Area, Thunder Bay’s revitalized waterfront, City of Thunder Bay Parks and Open Spaces Section for a presentation by a landscape architect and by the director of planning services division, the 100-metre deep Ouimet Canyon, Black Bay, McLeod Tailings at the Geraldton Interpretive Centre and Terrace Bays.

In the winter term, a second design studio will focus on Thunder Bay itself, with the design informed not only by the first semester’s analysis, but by the data gathered by students in the field.

The trip was supported by the Faculty of Architecture Dean’s Office Studio Enrichment Fund.

The final studio presentations of individual student’s work will be held on Dec. 13 beginning at 9:15 a.m. in Centre Space, J.A. Russell Building.

The second term studio final reviews will be in April.

Residential school survivors honoured at powwow

Event hosted on former Assiniboia school grounds JACOB SINGLETON, STAFFT

T

he Orange Shirt Day Powwow took place Sunday at Wellington Park with over 100 people attending.

The event was organized in honour of the survivors and families of the residential schools and was emceed

by Eric and Shaneen Robinson. The powwow was held at the location of the former Assiniboia Indian Residential School. Hosting the event on the same grounds where the crimes of the residential schools were committed allowed the attendees to reclaim Wellington Park, affirming the past and seizing the future.

The field where the festivity took place is situated below a hill where

As the powwow geared up, the dancers, singers and drummers took their place in the shadow of the old residential school. But, as the grand entry kicked off, it was clear that Assiniboia was in the shadow of the powwow.

One survivor of the Assiniboia residential school, Josephine Robinson, who graduated from the school in 1965, spoke with the Manitoban briefly. “I was 14 when I first came here,” Robinson said.

On her feelings about the location, she said “I always have this strange feeling when there is nothing in the field."

“It was sectioned off in two. There was a line in the middle, with boys on one side and girls on the other. And nobody could cross because they had brothers and sisters and they couldn’t even talk to each other.”

Robinson added that she did have some positive experiences.

“This is where I learned discipline for myself,” she said. “I did make some lifelong friends.”

Michael Esquash led a prayer before the grand entry, honouring those impacted by residential schools.

His words were short but resounded with attendees. “Thanks for the ones who made it home and remember those who didn’t,” he said.

Shortly after, Eric Robinson called on all residential school survivors who were in attendance to lead the grand entry. At the rear of the group was leader of Manitoba's official opposition, Wab Kinew, who often dances in Indigenous ceremonies.

The drums and singing of the opening song called “Victory” were performed by the Spirit Sands Singers. Survivors leading the grand entry danced emphatically as the participants danced to the drums and voices of the song. The atmosphere was electric as the audience was drawn into the awesome performance.

Later, there were performances from Buffalo Red Thunder, Prairie Grass Singers and Brown Bear Singers. All of which were just as exciting and entertaining as the opening song.

After the grand entry, survivors came to the microphone to speak about their experiences and feelings of the residential schools. Among them was Valerie Wood. She described the taking of her siblings by authorities to be brought to residential schools.

“My brothers and my sisters all were taken from my home,” said Wood. “One by one. I remember hearing them cry as they were taken from us.

“After, we didn’t know where we fit. Were the bonds with our home broken?”

Wood said that she rediscovered herself in a sweat lodge after surviving the residential school.

“My sweat lodge experience showed my I was an Anishinaabe woman. And it was such a good feeling to finally know,” she said.

The powwow ended with a feast where the participants and attendees all enjoyed snacks and beverages.

The conversation started by those like Robinson and Wood carried over into the evening.

innipeg pop band Panicland just released their newest single “Wasted” last week as a follow-up to their Souvenir debut song, “Bad Word.” The band will be coming to Winnipeg to play at the Garrick Centre Oct. 23.

he Manitoba Indigenous Law Student Association (MILSA) hosted a talent show at the Park Theatre showcasing a great lineup of local artists and talents with a focus on Indigenous work last week.

The event also included a silent auction and all funds raised from the entire event went to those attending the Indigenous Bar Association’s 30th annual fall conference in November.

The theme of the event was system disruption as it reflected on the necessary changes that must be made within law in support of Indigenous

people.

MILSA is a student-led association that advocates on behalf of Indigenous law students, offering support systems for problems present both inside and outside of classrooms.

Danielle H. Morrison, a thirdyear law student from Anishinaabeg of Naongashiing and one of the organizers of the fundraiser, said MILSA’s annual events are aimed toward offering financial support for Indigenous law students at the U of M. “The Indigenous Bar Association’s conference is where we can actually connect with other Indigenous students, practicing lawyers [and] academics to actually get that support that we’re lacking in law school,” said Morrison.

It is one of the largest events that Indigenous law students attend all year, bringing keynote speakers from different areas of law. The conference will be held in Saskatoon, Sask. between Nov. 1-3, discussing ways in which child welfare and Indigenous law can be codified in the legal system.

Morrison said that the fundraiser and the conference share the same theme.

She said the fundraiser was “very fitting in the way the legal community has been affected by some very

Frightening fun returns just in time for Halloween Fear Winnipeg comes back bigger and better BRAIDEN PERGIS, STAFF

F

ear Winnipeg returns every Friday and Saturday in October, bringing more Halloween fun to the city with new events that will have participants scared out of their minds but satisfied with their experience.

Fear Winnipeg is an annual event set up by executive producer Jay Hall and his company, Sync Digital Solutions. Starting in 2015, the event has since grown from its only game, the zombie chase, to an intense simulation of movie-like terror, where the participants are the actors.

Tickets must be purchased online from Fear Winnipeg’s website.

Emailed instructions including the location and time slot will follow.

“We have the zombie chase which is the longest zombie chase we’ve ever had, [with the] most actors we’ve ever had in the chase and most scene setups,” Hall said, “usually we only have one set-up. We have 11 scenes this year.”

Hall referred to the several subsets that participants must complete in order to get to the end of the zombie chase.

He continued to explain the newer games that are now being included in the Fear Winnipeg experience.

“We have the coffin escape, which is all redone,” said Hall.

“We did it for the first time last year, and it had technology in it, and some people didn’t know how to use the technology, so we took the technology out […] when you’re communicating, you’re communicating through a pipe instead of through radios.”

Hall noted Fear Winnipeg now includes a Saw-inspired escape room, saying that even he did not want to finish the last challenge.

The entire event calls for greater teamwork and collaboration utilizing staff from Hall’s company and approximately 60 paid staff, along with volunteers.

“We recommend [attendees be] 15 [years old] plus but we tell parents that we’re not parents,” said Hall.

“If they feel that their kid can handle it, they can bring their kid. No infants.”

Hall said that the oldest participant that they have had in the past was 71 years old, finishing the course and even helping other finish the challenge.

He said as long as the participant can crawl and walk up a flight of stairs, they are able to be a part of the action.

With the excitement that comes from Fear Winnipeg running throughout October, people will become more creative with who they bring. Hall mentioned a time where a player took his crush to Fear on their first date. It was their first and last date.

Yet for others, Fear transcends social categories.

“You’ll find cliques of people ¬— you know, night club people, said Hall.”

he U of M Bisons football club kicked off the second half of the season by dropping a 32-31 decision to the University of Regina Rams in overtime.

The Rams controlled much of the game, leading 18-6 heading into the fourth quarter, before the Bisons battled back with 19 points to force overtime. But a blocked two-point convert attempt sealed the herd’s fate, as the club dropped to 2-3 with the loss.

he U of M Bisons men's hockey club opened the 2018-19 Canada West season splitting a road series with the University of Calgary Dinos over the weekend.

Bisons captain Brett Stovin got the season started on the right foot, scoring three goals on the weekend, despite the club only earning two points of a possible four.

“I know we have a couple guys that actually were on the Olympic team in 2016 coming back to Guelph to come compete, there were a few guys that made the FISU team.

“So there are a lot of really great, great, great athletes that will be here, so that’s definitely something you can watch.”

The Bisons begin the Canada West track season on Dec. 1, at the Flying M Classic. The start-time for the meet has still to be decided.
