MSU unanimously passed a motion at its Sept. 26 board meeting declaring a climate emergency and is demanding the U of M do the same.

The motion also demands the university commit to halving its carbon emissions by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 in response to the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate

Change’s (IPCC) call for world climate emissions to follow the same overall reduction.

UMSU president Jakob Sanderson said the motion was “extremely exciting” and that it “couldn’t be more timely.”

“We have been living in a climate emergency for a long time and I think it is very, very important for UMSU to take [a] stand and I think that

frankly the administration needs to look themselves in the mirror and look at what they can do to be a leader on climate going forward,” he said.

The motion’s was passed came the day before an estimated 10,000 people gathered outside the Manitoba legislature to protest inaction by the federal government as part of a global climate strike movement.

In an email, U of M spokesperson John Danakas noted that the U of M has been recognized as a leader in sustainability efforts and it supports research that is critical to tracking climate change.

He did not say whether the university would declare a climate emergency as UMSU’s motion demands or if it would extend its current sustainability plan to hit the goals laid out in the motion.

Danakas also noted the U of M has submitted an infrastructure project to the province which is estimated to eventually result in a cumulative 14 per cent reduction in Fort Garry campus greenhouse gas emissions.

Sanderson said that while the motion or something similar could have come earlier, he would rather it happen now than later.

“I think it’s time for UMSU to stand with those organizations and to make this decisive step.”

housands gathered at the Manitoba legislature Friday to march through the streets and amplify the call for a serious response to climate change.

The largest demonstration the city has seen in decades was inspired by Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future movement that has seen millions of students from countries all over the globe organize mass walkouts on two consecutive Fridays.

The 16-year-old activist has been holding weekly strikes outside the Swedish parliament for more than a year, igniting a worldwide movement and drawing the ire of grown men and women whose ad hominem attacks harken back to a mythical post-war schoolyard and are dispatched easily enough with a swift application of the rubber-glue defence.

Current trajectory represents a failure of NDP strategy New Democrats must return to radical left roots if party hopes to gain ground KENNY INGRAM, STAFF

D

espite Justin Trudeau’s shortcomings, Jagmeet Singh still has a steep hill to climb to a successful New Democratic Party (NDP) campaign.

The 2019 federal election campaign will no doubt be an interesting one. Not because of a new far-right party, which will make little difference — most who are right of centre will vote Conservative as they have always done — but because of the new developments happening on the left.

To anyone who is ideologically left-wing, Trudeau’s four years in power have been a complete failure.

His government was a far cry from the populist, progressive campaign that drew the votes of so many on the left.

The Liberal government had four years to implement the “Real Change” it promised — including ending the draconian first-past-the-post electoral system and ending Canada’s ridiculous $3.3 billion in subsidies doled out each year to fossil fuel companies — and instead broke those promises and drastically increased subsidies.

Moreover, for a leader who attracted attention and drew droves of support in the last campaign by condemning Stephen Harper’s niqab

ban, his latest scandal featuring pictures and videos of himself in blackface may cause a hemorrhaging of support from those who originally supported the Liberals on their appeal to diversity in the last election.

To the left of centre voter who cares about these issues and went out of their way to support the Liberal party in 2015, the Liberals are completely off the table.

The real question is whether the left base, which overwhelmingly showed up to vote Liberal in 2015, contributing to the highest voter turnout since 1993, will go to another party or simply stay home.

The answer is already slowly being revealed, and it has a direct correlation with the kind of campaign Singh runs.

It’s clear to many people that Singh has been a disappointing candidate and it’s not hard to see why. As both a new party leader and new MP, Singh has clearly held back and simply not been at the forefront of many important issues facing the country.

He’s been mealy-mouthed on issues like Quebec’s religious symbol ban — a ban that would have direct consequences for Sikh people like himself — saying it would not be challenged by an NDP government.

Additionally, his solutions to some

of the most important issues facing Canadians, including telecommunications — where Canadians pay some of the highest rates in the entire world — would be Band-Aid solutions to problems that require structural solutions.

This type of response represents

In order to excite a base that will turn out to elections, Singh must bring the NDP back to its socialist roots the NDP’s failure to differentiate itself from Trudeau’s Liberals.

All of this has cumulatively contributed to an NDP that has struggled to stay relevant and is under 14 per cent in the polls.

At this point, Singh has little to lose.

In order to excite a base that will turn out to elections, Singh must bring the NDP back to its socialist roots.

Though the NDP policy convention has already happened, there are

many issues that have either been overlooked or ignored by leadership.

Singh must advocate for structural solutions to the current system designed to fail the average Canadian and make the wealthy wealthier.

This includes the nationalization of industries that have been proven ineffective and a burden to Canadians, including the telecom industry, big banks and insurance companies.

Next, he must come out in favour of drastic changes to Canada’s foreign policy by standing up to America.

This includes removing Canada from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which is an outdated organization that only serves the United States’ aggressive and corporatist imperialism.

This also means advocating for the Palestinian people by doing more to boycott, divest and sanction Israel — which has ignored the United Nations’ resolution to stop illegally building on Palestinian territory — as well as condemning any action taken to destabilize Latin American countries, as the U.S. has continually done.

Singh must earn the support of minimum wage workers by implementing a federal minimum wage of $15 and tie it to inflation and the average cost of living increase in response

to provinces that have neglected the issue for far too long.

Most importantly, Singh must bring to the forefront the issue of collective ownership of companies.

This includes the promise of incentives for those who wish to start worker co-operatives and legislating 50 per cent worker representation on the boards of large companies.

The NDP must finally stop running from the socialist label, which it has done since it removed the term from the party’s constitution in 2013.

Instead, it must denounce the failure of capitalism and embrace Canadians’ newfound support of socialism.

A new poll found nearly 60 per cent of Canadians have a favourable view of the term.

This must be leveraged into a grassroots coalition of working people who are energized to go out and vote.

The NDP cannot simply be a slightly more left-wing Liberal party.

Instead, it must return to its revolutionary roots and find its own lane for Canadians looking for an alternative to the two major corporatist parties.

The Pop-Up Pow wow 2.0 (Friendship Dance Event) took place during Nuit Blanche in front of Synonym Art Consultation.

This is the second pop-up powwow hosted by the Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art Gallery in partnership with Wallto-Wall Mural & Culture Festival and Sākihiwē Festival.

Powwow dancers of all ages performed in regalia and invited the crowd to join in dancing with them for the last section of their show.

Shanley Spence performed at last year’s pop-up powwow and when she saw the call for dancers she jumped at the chance to perform at Nuit Blanche again.

“I was really lucky to be born to a mother who was really determined to get back to her culture and her cultural identity, and so as soon as I was born I was out at powwows and gatherings like this,” said Spence.

“It is a small group of people that are focused in it right now, but I think

that with this type of exposure it can just keep getting bigger and better,” she said.

Wheelchair basketball is played by more than just full-time wheelchair users.

“One thing that’s been really important to us with this and with our open court sessions is to show that anyone can try the chairs out [...] It doesn’t have to be just if you’re in a wheelchair, you play wheelchair basketball,” said Amaya.

Amaya said she hoped the event would encourage people to get out and enjoy themselves.

Finding ‘Permanence,’ one band member at a time

Vancouver-based outfit Strange Breed brings socially-aware grunge rock to Winnipeg ZACHARY SIGURDSON, STAFF

“You can only get so far playing local shows,” said Bell.

The band knew they wanted professional recordings produced but could not afford it on their own.

“I feel like a huge level up for us was when we were finding grants and some funding from the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings and Creative BC. “That was something that really helped us out,” said Bell.

Strange Breed, an all-queer, allfemale garage-rock group from Vancouver, is touring across Canada to promote their debut album Permanence, which dropped Sept. 13.

They stopped in Winnipeg Sept. 26.

The band is comprised of Nicolle Dupas (guitar, vocals), Terra Chaplin (guitar), Megan Bell (drums) and Ally Von Wallis (bass).

Strange Breed came together one member at a time, beginning with Dupas and Chaplin collaborating.

“When [Chaplin and I] first got

together to work on something, she helped me finish a song I was trying to finish for a long time,” said Dupas.

“It was really cool to get right to working with somebody you get along with really well.”

The two wanted to integrate a drummer into their group, so Dupas enlisted her partner, Megan Bell. Bell was initially meant to be a temporary band member, as Dupas was unsure if it was wise to work with her romantic partner. The three ended up working so well together that Bell stayed on permanently.

“We weren’t sure if we were going

to find a bass player or not,” said Dupas.

Von Wallis worked in a coffee shop near Bell and Dupas’s house.

When they got to talking, they realized they had a lot in common.

Dupas asked Von Wallis, a guitar player, if she would be willing to learn to play bass for her band. Von Wallis agreed and becameFi their bassist.

After Strange Breed was strung together, the band set out to release an album.

The biggest hurdle the band faced while creating Permanence was financing the recording time.

Studer strives to create her work in a sustainable way and spread ecoconsciousness through her art.

“By doing an exhibition like this I can do my part to maybe, just on a very, very small scale, to increase awareness of what’s going on and feeling like I am making a difference,” said Studer.

Bisons blueliner has high hockey hopes

ike junior hockey programs, U Sports programs tend to ebb and flow through the years. Teams will bring in a crop of rookies and the team will gel around its core for a few seasons.

The team will be good, then great and then will start the process over as players graduate.

Last year was supposed to be the great year for the U of M Bisons men’s hockey team, but things did not necessarily go as planned. Injuries and departures pushed head coach Mike Sirant to change course and throw many rookies into the fire, and a team with a strong result in 2017-18 stumbled in 2018-19.

The club went from a fourth-place finish in the conference standings and hosting a playoff series, to seventhplace and out of the playoffs.

A massive graduating class hurt the herd even more, but according to fifth-year Bisons defender Adam Henry, the team will be just fine heading into the 2019-20 season.

“Right now [the team] feels like it’s in a pretty good place actually,” he said.

“Last year was pretty challenging […] we had a number of guys leave for various reasons, whether they didn’t want to continue university, they didn’t want to keep playing hockey,

they wanted to explore pro options, so we ended up losing players that we weren’t expecting to lose and we lost a few of them last minute.

“Mike [Sirant] had tried to recruit based on what he thought we had, then we lost guys last minute so that kind of hurt us a bit. Then it was just a challenge throughout the year and some frustration and not a ton of fun.”

“Losing is never fun, winning is always a lot more fun, but definitely there’s things that you learn within that, how to handle it, things that we did that weren’t working, all those different things.

“When you go through struggle like that there’s a million clichés you can use, but you definitely appreciate the good feeling of winning.”

Manitoba had the lead at halftime and Regina clawed back to take the lead late, but Matt Riley played the hero in a 27-26 win. The fifth-year kicker knocked down the game winning field goal with no time on the clock and gained huge praise from Bisons head coach Brian Dobie.

The two sides battled to a stalemate throughout the remainder of the second quarter, until a late fumble gave Regina a boost.

Dyce fought off a Regina defender for the catch and Riley picked up the convert for a 21-17 Manitoba lead at halftime.

Regina picked up a rouge on the opening kickoff of the second half and the Rams again took the lead with 2:33 remaining in the third quarter.

Donnelly found Daniel Scraper with a 15-yard pass and he drove right, edging his way into the end zone for the touchdown.

Galvan added the convert to make it 25-21 Regina.

Riley knocked down a 13-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to bring the Bisons within one point and Galvan picked up a late rouge to push the Regina lead to two, but Riley came back with a walkoff field goal for the 27-26 Manitoba win.

With the win Manitoba sits 3-2 on the year, tied with Saskatchewan for third in the Canada West standings.

It only took Regina 32 seconds to get on the board, as Josh Donnelly found Kyle Moortgat standing without a Bisons defender in sight. Moortgat picked up a short pass and was off to the races for the touchdown and 7-0 Rams lead.

“I saw an aggressive player, who’s a very good player — he’s extremely aggressive — play very aggressively, and get beat on a double move,” Dobie said.

Manitoba responded on the next drive, working its way down the field and into scoring position. Logan Fischer sliced through the Regina defence with a five-yard run for the score.
