Sexual violence report issues 43 recommendations to U of M President Barnard says plans will be set for all recommendations within six months MALAK ABAS, STAFF

T

he report mandated by U of M president David Barnard in fall 2018 to address sexual violence on campus has arrived with over 40 recommendations and a six-month deadline.

The independent review, titled “Responding to Sexual Violence, Harassment & Discrimination at the University of Manitoba: A Path Forward,” was presented Tuesday in an open community meeting and includes 43 recommendations to the university.

Barnard said the university has accepted all 43 recommendations and will be initiating the first immediately — that the U of M establish an implementation committee chaired by one of the university’s vice-presidents to oversee action regarding the recommendations.

“The teacher-student relationship is one which is built on a foundation of trust” — Helga Van Iderstine, co-author Barnard said he is committed to a timeline where the committee will “identify clear plans and timelines for each of the recommendations within the next six months.”

“It will be the responsibility of the implementation team to consider any relevant implications and establish the best means to bring the recommendations to life,” he said.

Historical complaints common, inappropriate behaviour often starts in social situations

The report was prepared by two lawyers — Helga Van Iderstine, who was in attendance at the presentation and briefed the audience on the report, and Donna Miller.

It contains research including some that resulted from more than 35 interviews with people in the U of M community. Review for the report took place from November 2018 to June 2019.

The U of M also provided the reviewers confidential access to recent external investigation reports, all of which had been brought to the office of human rights and conflict management and then investigated externally.

Van Iderstine emphasized the report is not meant to be investigative on a case-by-case basis.

“One of the things that we did not do, that was not part of our mandate, was to cast blame, or to re-investigate complaints and investigations that had been previously reviewed,” she said.

The report found that complaints included “sexual misconduct […] per-

sonal harassment, favouritism and reprisals.” Not all of the complaints were substantiated, and some were not in violation of current U of M policies.

Historical complaints, those filed past the university’s limitation period, were also part of the collection. The report noted these were more likely to be complaints from a student against a faculty member, and students in this scenario often expressed concerns over how the complaint could affect their degree.

Social activities, including offcampus field trips, were found to be a common source of inappropriate behaviour.

“No wrong door” model criticized, resource centre recommended

One of the main concerns touched on in both the presentation and the full report is the university’s “no wrong door” approach to reporting sexual violence.

This model provides multiple points of accessibility to someone seeking services or support.

The report refers to the policy as “valuable” because of its inherent accessibility, but notes that “a survivor/victim of sexual violence or racism, for example, may disclose their experience to virtually anyone at the [U of M.]” The concern with this approach stems from the fact that “the survivor/ victim may be required to tell their story to multiple individuals” and that “an issue that warrants further investigation may not be investigated if it’s not brought to the attention of the [office of human rights and conflict management or its equivalent,]” according to the report.

Research also found that many interviewees were not sure of the exact process of making a formal complaint at the university.

The report recommends the U of M create a sexual violence resource centre, which would become a central point of contact for any person in the U of M community affected by sexual violence.

“This is to provide advice and follow-up so consistency occurs and people — and problems — don’t slip through the cracks,” Van Iderstine said at the presentation.

“The centre would make coming forward more accessible and would help correct the weaknesses I described earlier in the current ‘no wrong door’ model, where disclosures can be made, but there can be a lack of follow through.”

The “no wrong door” approach has been implemented widely at the government level since 2018, when Premier Brian Pallister announced it would be part of a new harassment policy.

Gary Allan Joseph Harding was convicted of professional misconduct and stripped of his medical licence after he allegedly made non-consensual sexual advances toward two students.

In December 2018, professor and director of the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals Peter Jones was placed on leave when it was revealed he had been accused of misconduct, including inappropriate student relationships.

The same day Barnard apologized to students, it was revealed five open investigations under the U of M’s respectful work and learning environment policy and sexual assault policy were underway at the time. There have been no public updates on the investigations since.

Demonstrators supporting Hong Kong protesters met by pro-Beijing activists Students rally outside University Centre TY BRASS, STAFF

A

small demonstration in support of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong took place outside UMSU University Centre Sept. 18.

The demonstrators wore hard hats, respirators and goggles while holding signs showing protesters in Hong Kong and accusing police of brutality while referencing “assault by gangsters.”

They were met by activists taking the side of the Chinese government who reportedly tossed coins at the pro-democracy demonstrators.

The demonstration drew a small crowd, including campus security, but broke up without any serious incident.

Widespread protests erupted in the Hong Kong region in June after the introduction of a bill that would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China. The bill was suspended, and eventually withdrawn completely, but that has not stopped the protesters, who are

now pushing for further democratic reform.

Hong Kong has enjoyed a special status since its reversion to China from British control in 1997, retaining relative autonomy even while being part of the People’s Republic of China.

It has a separate, more democratic legal system than China, allowing for freedom of speech and freedom of assembly.

Its special status, set out in its constitution, is set to expire in 2047, 50 years after its handover from the United Kingdom.

Increasing violence between protesters and the police has only added to the unrest throughout the region.

Rallies in support of the protesters have taken place around the world.

In many cases — such as at the U of M demonstration — these rallies have been met with pro-Beijing demonstrators.

Active Living Centre holds LGBTTQ* consultation

he U of M’s Active Living Centre (ALC) held an open consultation meeting to generate suggestions on how to make ALC space more queerfriendly Sept. 19.

The meeting, headed by three ALC staff members, was attended by several students. It consisted of a tour of ALC facilities followed by a discussion period.

Some suggestions put forward during the meeting included placing signs in high-volume areas that directly lay out the ALC’s no-hate policy, placing more private stalls in the men’s changing room, holding fitness classes specifically for the queer community and allies and an online indication for preferred changing rooms.

“The ALC currently meets with students on a case-by-case basis, but they want to consult with the community as a whole to see if there are sweeping ways they can increase comfort and accessibility

for members who are in the process of transitioning.”

In an email, ALC director of recreation services Tanya Angus stated that the meeting wasn’t a result of any particular issue but came about because of the ALC wanting to “continue to strive to provide an inclusive space.”

“We’ve recently worked with UMSU, Rainbow Pride Mosaic (RPM) and other resources on campus, and did a thorough review of best practices of other campus recreation

departments in North America to enhance our inclusivity,” she wrote.

“Our hope is to share with the campus community that we are an inclusive facility.”

Angus noted that the ALC is holding staff training sessions focused on “enhancing positive member experiences, inclusivity and safety and security,” and is creating an inclusivity statement and code of conduct for ALC facilities.

When asked after the meeting which suggestions the ALC might be

willing to commit to implementing, Angus declined to comment further.

Smith said the meeting was promising, and he was excited to see how things move forward.

“I loved hearing the feedback about how their staff received the training, and I thought it’s great that everyone was already familiar with what to do in those scenarios,” he said.

“It’s clear to me that [recreational services] wants to move forward with making the spaces as inclusive as possible.”

Winnipeg anti-fascist activist has begun court action against several members of the People's Party of Canada (PPC) after he was doxxed and branded a terrorist following a cancelled party event this summer.

Omar Kinnarath, an organizer with Fascist Free Treaty 1, filed an intent to sue notice Sept. 17 concerning a Twitter post published by the Winnipeg Centre electoral district association of the PPC that included his name, home address and phone number.

The post attached a photo of Kinnarath, who is Muslim, and a description referring to him as a “terrorist.”

The tweet was later shared by former PPC Winnipeg Centre chief executive officer Monique Choiselat.

Doxxing, the publishing of an individual’s private information online, is a controversial tactic deployed by both left- and rightwing activists to expose their counterparts on the opposite political

Kinnarath also called the post racist.

The original post was reported and taken down before Choiselat then re-posted the image, Kinnarath said.

The court document adds that Kinnarath “has suffered and will continue to suffer serious damage, including visible and proven injury, as a result of the above libel, slander, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of mental suffering.”

UMSU speaks out on pro-life campus campaign

After pro-life group the Canadian Centre for BioEthical Reform (CCBR) appeared on campus Friday with graphic materials, UMSU released a statement explaining the situation.

This is the second academic year in a row CCBR has campaigned outside UMSU University Centre (UC). In September 2018, their presence was met with counterprotestors from various student groups.

In November of last year, UMSU amended the union’s official position on reproductive rights to include that the union supports “one’s right to freedom of reproductive choice; and one’s right to be free from coercion or attempted coercion with respect to making reproductive choices” and opposes “any act of coercion or attempted coercion with respect to making reproductive choices” in its “equitable campus” position statement.

The group also does not operate in UMSU-owned spaces, and only campaigns outside of UC, thus they are protected by the Petty Trespasses Act. Mental illness does not discriminate Men often left out of mental health discussion NANKI SALUJA

extbooks, tuition and tests are often at the forefront of every student’s mind.

University life is hectic and we often accept disarray, and, although we may grow accustomed to this chaos, we should also take a moment and prioritize ourselves and practice some self-care and compassion.

While there have been attempts to destigmatize mental health issues through awareness campaigns, there are still some topics left to discuss. This includes the vast difference between suicide rates for men and women. However, in order to improve mental health, we first need to understand the difference between

mental health, illness and wellness.

The government of Canada officially defines mental health as “the state of your psychological and emotional well-being” and notes the term “does not mean the same thing as mental illness. However, poor mental health can lead to mental and physical illness."

In 2009, Statistics Canada found that the male suicide rate — 17.0 per 100,000 individuals —was three times higher than than that for females.

While men are more likely to die from suicide, Statistics Canada also reports that 1.5 times more females than males are hospitalized after suicide attempts. It has also put out a statement saying this discrepancy may be due to the fact that “females tend to use less fatal methods” — resulting in a greater extent of selfharm and more hospital admissions.

Males, on the other hand, often use “more violent methods.”

These numbers evoke the question: How aware are we of the mental illnesses of those around us, specifically men?

U of M sessional instructor Lori Doan from the psychology department said much of it comes from smaller cultural norms that still persist.

“We’ve talked in years past about the phrase ‘Big boys don’t cry,’” she said.

“That is not an acceptable thing to say now, but that doesn’t mean that

the subtle implications aren’t there.”

These implications are due to the stereotypical gender roles that lock people in boxes that label women as emotional and men as emotionless.

While these ideas of gender norms have become moderately old-fashioned, Doan said men may still suffer from the pressure of “stereotypical gender roles.”

“Our clientele fits in the university population, so it seems like it’s representative” — David Ness, head of U of M counselling services These roles create the expectation for men to be tough, Doan said, “and this often causes them to not seek out help.”

Mental health at the U of M

So now that we have all the facts, let’s make sense of them. Men’s suicide attempts are more likely to succeed because they tend to be more violent, however, more women are hospitalized. Stereotypical gender roles are still an obstacle that obstructs men from seeking

counselling.

While these facts apply to the majority, head of U of M student counselling services David Ness said students using counselling services at the university are representative of the wider student body.

“Our clientele fits the university population, so it seems like it’s representative,” he said.

“We do get more women and people that identify as female, however in the student population there’s more women as well. Is it a significant difference? I would say no.”

Recent statistics released on the province’s official website lists female enrolment in Manitoba universities as 58 per cent of the overall student body in 2017-18.

When asked about the stigma regarding mental health, Ness said he believes student counselling services didn’t “have to justify [its] existence in any way,” which he called “a sign of destigmatization.”

Although this acceptance reduces stigma around mental health, these statistics make it apparent we still have a long road ahead.

More than just shortcomings beneath university’s new logo U of M’s new brand a visual display of opportunities for growth, differentiation MATTHEW DOERING, STAFF

O

ver the course of the past few months, the U of M has been rolling out its new brand, with a new logo at its fore. The change is dramatic.

The removal of the university’s year of establishment is visually dismissive of it being the oldest university in Western Canada, and the inclusion of floating, detached elemental wind does little for its visual clarity.

A logo doesn’t need to tell a story.

Modern logos don’t. Modern logos are simple and timeless in their simplicity, with the best — and oldest — not requiring fundamental redesigns.

But there has been a complete redesign, which leaves the past and imagines a future. And in that, the new visual identity alludes to two promises, to two unique selling propositions (USP) to differentiate our university from others across the country and around the world.

The first is a “community uniquely strengthened by Indigenous knowledges and perspectives,” represented by the flame portrayed oral teachings shared around a fire. The other is online learning, which is represented by stylized book pages riffling in the clouds.

After the resignations of two Indigenous scholars at the U of M in the last academic year — Lynn Lavallée, the first vice-provost of Indigenous engagement, who resigned in December and Barry Lavallee, senior physician and mentor in the school of medicine, who followed in February — the university is joining the ranks of others in the country, not differentiating itself.

In this light, the prominently displayed traditional territories acknowledgement on the U of M’s newly redesigned home page, and at the top left of all the other redesigned pages, feels like a part of the veneer, a Band-Aid, a promise without substance.

The U of M is the only U15 university to display the acknowledgement so prominently and proudly, which is a positive move when done in the spirit of reconciliation, but it feels lacking in the effort and the actions that should accompany the words.

Just weeks into the current academic year, the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s teepee has been vandalized and Indigenous students feel unheard in their protests against the Thirty Metre Telescope in Hawaii.

In fairness, the new logo was developed in consultation with Indigenous community members and the number of Indigenous languages taught on campus has doubled this year, but only a small proportion of students on campus will enrol in these courses which are subject to discontinuation if enrolment is too low.

This isn’t a community uniquely strengthened. This is a community struggling.

The other USP — online learning, engagement, education — has the power to reflect the complex needs of today’s students. Online offerings

recognize the complexity of needs that mature students, students with parenting responsibilities and parttime students who also work part- or full-time have. They also reach out to students in remote locales by giving flexibility to their degrees.

But the U of M is falling behind similarly sized U15 institutions in online learning, a place where it was

Though this is just the number of courses and says nothing of the number of students enrolled or the success of any of those classes, the stagnation of the U of M’s online offerings is becoming more and more apparent.

In industry and new product development, there is always the question of whether the product or the sales comes first. Sales justify a need, a desire, but require a product to sell. Looking at this rebranding as the launch of a new product gives hope.

Even though the new logo is currently not reflective of the university’s brand, there remains an opportunity to grow into it.

It is an exciting invitation into a new chapter and an exciting USP if it can be realized. If any university in Western Canada knows how to adapt and position itself in a changing world, surely it would be the oldest university in Western Canada.

As students, let’s hope the bold trailblazing future envisioned by our university’s ambitious and essential new brand is embraced, not bungled.

Proposed ban a start to meaningful gun legislation Far more must be done to combat Canada’s epidemic of gun violence KENNY INGRAM, STAFF

anadians are being shot to death and only decisive action will stop it.

On the night of Sept. 14, police were called to an apartment complex in Mississauga, Ont. There they found five people wounded — including a 13-year-old, 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds — and another 17-yearold dead, all from gunfire.

The killer’s weapon of choice was a semi-automatic rifle.

It’s easy to overlook Canada’s epidemic of gun violence due to our proximity to a trainwreck of mass shootings just south of the border.

But instances like the mass shooting in Mississauga should remind every Canadian that the current laws are not nearly strict enough.

Last year, the Greater Toronto Area was similarly affected by a mass shooting that left 15 with bullet wounds, two of them — an 18-yearold and a 10-year-old — fatally.

Similarly, the shooter’s weapon of choice was a semi-automatic .40 Smith & Wesson handgun.

Canada’s homicide rate in 2018 hit a 10-year high. Statistics Canada

cited shootings as a reason for the uptick.

The reality is that these instances of gun violence will not stop until Canada’s federal government takes the drastic steps needed to address it.

First, Canada must immediately implement a nationwide mandatory buyback and ban the guns most commonly used in these killings.

This would include the firearms listed on Canada’s restricted firearm list, which includes many variations of semi-automatic rifles and handguns.

A person serious about hunting will not have an issue with semiautomatic rifles being banned. This is because anyone with any degree of technique does not require a semi-automatic gun to hunt. Rather, someone serious about hunting will be perfectly fine with firearms on the non-restricted list — including shotguns and lever- and bolt-action rifles — which would not be affected by the ban.

Moreover, the fact that firearms can be so easily accessible at any given moment also contributes to

this epidemic.

Canada’s laws require that a gun owner be licensed and keep firearms locked away and unloaded. This system would work well if gun owners lived on their own and it was followed

This is simply not the reality. There is no agency going door to door, randomly checking on the status of firearms in the home, which means that a gun could potentially be feet away from any member of a household at any given moment, unlocked and loaded.

Firearms being within an arm’s reach could contribute to the hundreds of Canadians accidentally shot

every single year.

Even if people follow these regulations 100 per cent of the time, having guns easily accessible will inevitably lead to more shootings and deaths.

People who live in rural areas argue for the necessity of owning a firearm for self-defence, citing the time it would take law-enforcement to reach them.

This worldview is exactly the type of mentality which led to the death of Colten Boushie.

Boushie was killed by a shot to the neck after trespassing on the property of Gerald Stanley.

Stanley’s defence argued the gun fired by accident. But Stanley should not have had a gun within reach to begin with. Rather, he should have called law enforcement — something he failed to do until after he took the law into his hands and Boushie was dead.

Vigilantism like this only ever leads to chaos, which should be the exact opposite objective of any lawabiding gun owner.

The solution to this is to implement a system where those who own

firearms on the non-restricted list are able to sign out and use the them to hunt, and have them stored when they’re not.

This would take the form of highly-regulated, dedicated gun lockers in central locations close to the public land most commonly used for hunting and away from metropolitan areas.

These solutions would not only be effective, but are already incredibly popular.

As it stands, nearly 70 per cent of Canadians agree that all guns should be banned in urban areas. A gun locker approach would ensure that a popular opinion of safety is represented in the laws.

The Liberal party promise to ban and buy back assault weapons is a good start, but, as many victims of the 2018 Toronto mass shooting have already noted, it does not go nearly far enough.

If Canada wishes to prioritize the ending of senseless gun violence, drastic steps are needed to ensure that, first and foremost, citizens are kept safe.

Perhaps we are just unable to confront any form of collective action problem. Or perhaps the fear of incurring short-term discomfort to preserve our salvation is just too great, and exacerbated tenfold when we consider that our institutions of authority are often powered by old white men with less to lose in the long term than most.

I

n my view, the most fundamental difficulty facing climate activists over the past decades is that taking action against global warming is too often framed as a short-term pain, long-term gain trade-off.

I once thought that — as the scientific community continued to reach a stronger and stronger consensus as to the imminence of our climate crisis, as the effects became more tangible in our daily lives and as the pain requisite of the status quo became more inevitable — this tradeoff would eventually tilt in our favour.

But looking at our governments and institutions in Canada and around the world, it is clear I was wrong.

Perhaps the issue is that, as humans, we simply see ourselves as too infallible to confront the reality of the exact personality flaw that got us into this mess in the first place.

It is clear we need to find a new way to reach this set of power-brokers if we are to have any hope It is clear that among segments of the population — often youth and Indigenous people — this trade-off is more courageously being confronted.

Students desperately need this university to move in a bold direction that will not only counteract carbon emissions on its campuses, but will significantly invest in environmental education opportunities, renewable infrastructure and energy models and be at the forefront of research on environmental impacts both on and off campus.

Students across the world are leading the way toward climate justice, and they should expect the same from our education and research institutions.

It’s time for the University of Manitoba to lead these institutions and recognize this moment as not just a climate emergency, but a climate opportunity.

Making House Handshake a home in Winnipeg Local indie band comes together over provincial lines EMELIA FOURNIER, STAFF

A

long and winding road led to the formation of local indie outfit House Handshake.

The band is currently comprised of Quinton Poitras (vocals, frets), Darrell Anderson (frets, vocals), Sarah Greco (vocals, ukulele), Tanner Link (keys, frets, vocals), Brennan Saul (drums) and Tate Hiebert (frets, vocals, keys).

“It’s not all about you, we try to remember that when we’re onstage” — Quinton Poitras, House Handshake vocalist, string player The band members have created a unique sound reminiscent of counterculture folk-rock bands from the 1970s, drawing from their eclectic musical influences.

House Handshake has only officially been a band since the beginning of 2018, but their journey goes further back than that.

The band came together gradually.

Poitras had started dating Greco in Winnipeg in 2016, but shortly after he said he “decided to go chase some dreams in B.C.” Even though they had not been dating long, Poitras invited Greco to come live with him and a friend in B.C. Meanwhile, Anderson was going through a difficult time back in Winnipeg.

The same friend who invited Poitras out to B.C. reached out to him to come stay with them.

Poitras, Greco and Anderson began to play music together, finding open mics to play in Vancouver.

Poitras realized he had found what he thought he was missing in Winnipeg.

“One day, it just kind of clicked in me,” he said.

“I was playing music and it’s just like, I no longer need to search. I said I was chasing a dream, which was to find my band, I realized I didn’t need to search anymore because I lived with my band.”

Unexpectedly, it took leaving Winnipeg for the three Manitoban musicians to come together and make music.

Vancouver’s music scene was not working out for Poitras, Anderson and Greco — it was very competitive and almost unfriendly, according to Poitras.

“We were like ‘Fuck it, let’s go back to home where the music is good, the people are good,’” he said.

In 2017 Poitras, Anderson and Greco moved back to Manitoba and stayed at Poitras’s dad’s house in the small town of Ladywood for a few months.

“It’s not all about you, we try to remember that when we’re onstage,” he said.

Local Indigenous skate and hip-hop communities came together last Sunday at the first ever Wreckonciliation showcase.

People of all ages and skill levels came to participate in and watch skate competitions, a cypher and live performances. Many of the prizes were donated by local businesses, including skateboard shops. After a weekend of rain, the event was moved indoors at the Edge Skatepark downtown.

Lenard Monkman, a primary organizer of the event, spoke to the crowd about how Wreckonciliation was made possible by the immeasurable help of people who cared and wanted to create a positive space for youth and their families.

Wreckonciliation was an afternoon of fun that served as an example of how community events can bring people from all walks of life together to celebrate common passions.

Portraiture as protest Ally Gonzalo collaborates with CBC on Bakla!

lly Gonzalo brings boldness and beauty in Bakla!, his latest portrait series.

Gonzalo is now a Winnipeg-based professional photographer, but he got his start back in the Philippines.

While on a field trip during his fourth year of university in the Philippines, Gonzalo stumbled into the role of an amateur photographer.

“My friends lent me their camera and I was being my trigger-happy self, took so, so many photos,” he said.

He was then told he had an eye for photography and began to pursue it after graduation.

Gonzalo came to Winnipeg about three years ago to pursue photography professionally and graduated from

PrairieView School of Photography in 2017.

Gonzalo made large prints to make a point about taking up the space that bakla are often denied.

“The way I did the photography is I tried to show dominance, assert power of the bakla through photographs,” he said.

He showcased different members of the bakla community, including nurses, athletes and artists.

“I wanted to show the diverse identities that we have,” he said.

Gonzalo’s overall goal with photography is to increase visibility for people who sometimes feel invisible.

“In a way, my photography is a protest,” he said.

“If you think fat people are ugly, no, fuck you, they’re beautiful. Your ideas of what people should look like is a byproduct of capitalism’s convoluted and fucked up ways of engraining stupid beauty standards, which are in essence Eurocentric.”

A friendly recruitment Rookie defender goes from mountains to prairies to join friend with herd JASON PCHAJEK, STAFF

O

ften when U Sports programs try to recruit players they offer them scholarships, playing time or even rely on the name recognition and pedigree of a particular team to draw in talent. For U of M Bisons women’s soccer rookie Stefanie Young, what got the ball rolling was a friend.

Before the mobile defender was wowing Bisons fans with her offensive awareness and heavy shot, she was plying her trade in British Columbia and looking for her next opportunity.

Enter her friend and former teammate, Karina Bagi, a goalkeeper and recent recruit of Manitoba.

“She played a big role in me coming here,” Young said.

“At first, being where I’m from […] it’s really big in Vancouver and you get lots of attention from people down there.”

Young said many of the big universities came to the area to recruit for

their soccer programs, but she wanted to go in a different direction. After a chat with Bagi, the Manitoba capital seemed like the perfect direction.

“I like to play a nice calm game, I don’t like to get all frazzled up” — Stefanie Young, Bisons women’s soccer defender “[Bagi] went to the May camp here, I think in her Grade 11 year, and she was just going on about how good the university and the soccer program was,” Young said.

What really sold Young on the program was the warmth and passion

for the game shown by Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas.

After sending out an email expressing her interest in joining the herd, Martinez Lagunas met Young after a game and made an immediate impression.

“She was just really great off the start,” Young said.

“You could tell she was passionate about the sport and for me that’s something you need in order to help a team grow. You’ve got to love the sport to want to do [well] in it.”

In their first meeting, Martinez Lagunas mentioned Bagi had told her about Young.

After seeing the defender in action, she was impressed by Young’s style of play and offered her a spot with the team.

Now, three weeks into the season, Bisons fans are similarly impressed by her dynamic play.

Typically after a statement win, Bisons head coach Brian Dobie would be glowing about his club’s

effort, but instead he was lamenting the score that could have been.

“I just feel somewhat frustrated,” Dobie said.

“Because we won the game and all that, but we won very ugly and sloppily, and we didn’t finish — we kept talking about finishing, and we just didn’t finish […] we left so many points on the board.”

ith thunderclouds rumbling outside, the U of M Bisons women’s soccer team headed inside to the Winnipeg Soccer Federation South Complex for a pair of games against a pair of basement-dwelling Pacific Coast opponents this weekend. The change in venue did nothing to throw off the herd as Manitoba picked up a weekend sweep.

On a dark and stormy Friday night the Bisons shone in a 4-0 win over the visiting Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack.

Two quick markers from Nicole Davis were all the Bisons needed to put TRU on its heels, and goals

by Stefanie Young and Jessica Tsai buried the Wolfpack who could not respond.

Young had a monster game for the herd, setting up both Davis goals to go along with her own.

Both sides traded chances throughout the first half, until Davis turned on the jets to burn the Wolfpack in her wake. Davis got a touch in transition, knifing the ball past a defender then beating her with speed.

The quick midfielder corralled the

ball and tapped it past TRU keeper Danielle Robertson for a 1-0 Bisons lead in the 12th minute.

Davis was moved up into an attacking midfield position for the weekend, a decision Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas used for a more offence-focused approach.

“She was dangerous the whole match,” Martinez Lagunas said.

“We wanted her to get that hat trick — that’s why she came back into the game — and she almost [got it], and I’m so proud of her.”

Also moved forward in the formation was defender Young, who Martinez Lagunas elected to play just behind the forwards in a roving position.

“We did that because we wanted more attack, more power,” Martinez Lagunas said.

Martinez Lagunas credited Young’s versatility and determination, adding the defender’s competitiveness is a boon because “she makes it contagious to the whole team, and that’s what we need.”

This increased offensive role for both Davis and Young paid dividends for the herd in the 27th minute as Young chipped the ball over the TRU
