Steve Kirby arrested, charged with sexual assault Nearly year-long investigation included incidents dating back to 2014 MALAK ABAS, STAFF

F

ormer U of M jazz professor Steve Kirby has been arrested and charged with sexual assault.

Winnipeg police confirmed that members of the city’s sex crime unit had become involved after a U of M student in the faculty of music came forward with allegations of multiple instances of sexual assault.

“It was reported that a female student, who was 19 years old at the time, was enrolled in the music program in the University of Manitoba and was sexually assaulted on a number of occasions by her jazz professor. The incidents occurred between September 2014 and January 2017.”

Skrabek also confirmed in the

email that Kirby had been arrested on charges of sexual assault on May 9.

He has been released since on a promise to appear. The case remains before the courts. Kirby is set to appear in court in June 2019.

Kirby officially left the university in June 2017 but had been on leave for the six months prior. Reports claim that the U of M was first approached with complaints against Kirby in 2012. He was hired at Boston-based Berklee College but was later fired after U of M students reached out to the college and said they had been harassed by Kirby.

A spokesperson for the U of M said in an email that only the Winnipeg Police Service would be able to comment on the case, and added that, as per U of M policy, the person coming forward would decide whether or not to report to police.

Last week, U of M president David Barnard held a media conference in which he apologized to students affected by incidents of inappropriate behaviour on campus and confirmed that Kirby had received a letter of employment from the university when transferring to Berklee College that “could be construed as supportive.”

It was confirmed after the meeting that there were currently five open investigations of members of faculty under the U of M’s respectful work and learning environment policy and sexual assault policy, and that three

involved some form of sexual assault or sexual harassment.

s the U of M administration continues to develop its policies to combat and prevent sexual violence on campus, students have had an array of reactions and responses to several cases of sexual misconduct from professors toward students that have recently become public.

On Sept. 5, the first day of classes, U of M president and vice chancellor David Barnard called a press conference and issued an apology to students affected by inappropriate behaviour on campus.

Gounni added that the focus on consent training seems like a positive first step. Student groups on campus can participate in consent workshops hosted by student group Justice for Women Manitoba, and it was announced at the media conference that all new faculty and new academic administrators “learn about consent culture, sexual violence policies and responding to disclosures” as a part of their orientation.

“I feel like mandatory consent training will be key to avoiding a similar situation from happening again,” he said.

“Jakob [Sanderson, UMSU president] and his team are on the right track, I believe, with the prioritization of consent culture, and the administration should seriously look into implementing it.”

n Thursday, the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre held the grand opening of a new facility at the Glenlea Research Station. Sunday it was open to the public for free.

The new centre, called the Dairy Farmers of Manitoba Discovery and Learning Complex, was

Grahn added that new exhibits are brought into the Discovery Centre yearly.

“We have a new entomology [exhibit]. We have a live beehive [where] bees can come and go from the building, so that’s new and people are quite interested in that,” she said.

“We also have, today, a brand-new chicken exhibit that’s going in. We have a new pork exhibit.”

Open farm day even included an especially rare treat — some pigs at the centre are expecting piglets.

Exhibit co-ordinator Harley Siemens said open farm day at the Discovery Centre is an opportunity for people to get a feel of what goes on at Manitoba farms.

“It’s very tough to get lots of people into actual barns because of biosecurity measures,” Siemens said.

“We want to make sure that we don’t spread disease or anything like that because it’s a lot of people.

“So, this is the perfect place to come to here, the Farm and Food Discovery Centre, to have people come here, get a little sneak peek but not have to go through all those measures.”

Siemens added that the introduction of virtual reality and other new technology to the centre is a relatively new feature, and he hoped that the use of interactive innovation would take the exhibits to a new level.

“I’m trying to bring technology and get people to feel like they’re [on the farm],” he said.

Adam Rogers of Wired wrote a piece detailing a trip to San Diego Comic-Con in 2008, which was the first year he noticed the tipping point of nerd culture. Walking around the show floor that year, Rogers noticed that the majority of attendees were female.

We have toxic fanboys and outspoken creators clashing on social media, in blogs and through YouTube videos, over who gets to define the discourse of the Star Wars fandom.

He also noticed that the young men at the convention were, in his words, “audibly grumbling” about the female contingent.

A decade later, we are constantly inundated online with the toxicity

of nerdy fandom’s countless tweets railing against “forced diversity,” “an SJW takeover” — "SJW" often used as an insult — and “the marginalization of straight white men.”

The fact is the majority of the fandom saw this coming and did nothing to stop it. Now we need to deal with those consequences.

The creators themselves have begun to lead the way on this issue.

Along with Wendig, actress Kelly Marie Tran has become an outspoken critic of toxic fandom.

Tran deleted all her posts on Instagram in June after receiving consistent racist and sexist comments about her portrayal of Rose Tico.

She was the first woman of colour to have a starring role in a Star Wars film and her harassment follows similar comments directed at co-star John Boyega who was subject to racist backlash over his role in the franchise.

In an op-ed written for the New York Times, Tran opened up about the abuse she received.

“It wasn’t their words, it’s that I started to believe them,” Tran wrote.

“Their words seemed to confirm what growing up as a woman and a person of colour already taught me: that I belonged in margins and

We have toxic fanboys and outspoken creators clashing on social media, in blogs and through YouTube videos over who gets to define the discourse of the Star Wars fandom.

Herein lies the problem, but the solution is simple: fans need to speak up and pick a side.

Toxicity has been allowed to fester on message boards and in Twitter feeds for decades, and this online component is the main problem. The internet is giving a small minority of voices a megaphone to spew hateful rhetoric and, when they do, all of fandom is in the splash zone.

The conventional wisdom is to “vote with your wallet,” and that certainly has been working. Star Wars and Marvel movies turn in huge profits at the box office and there seems to be no end in sight, but that only solves part of the problem.

Profit shows that there is a market, but the climate surrounding that market determines who wants to be involved. If a brilliant mind like Last Jedi director Rian Johnson faced years of death threats for trying something new, other similarly talented people will think twice about signing on.

The Star Wars fandom in particular has had real, life-altering impacts on the creators involved. Hayden Christensen largely quit acting following his portrayal of Anakin Skywalker, Jake Lloyd’s turn at the same character drove him down a self-destructive path and Ahmed Best — who played the much-reviled Jar Jar Binks — contemplated suicide after facing abuse online and in the media.

If nobody wants to be a part of the property you love because you allow a small subset of your community to control the discourse and fill their email and Twitter mentions with disgusting hate, there is nobody to blame but yourself.

Not all fans are toxic, not all fandoms are problematic, but there needs to be a concerted effort made by the majority of fans to define their particular culture. If you hate something, be nice about it. If you love something, let the creators know.

And if your favourite fan theory is proven untrue, don’t throw racial slurs around. Be an adult and deal with it.

So stand up, flex your tweeting fingers and get to work spreading love, not hate.

Indigenous peoples, in part, maintain an Indigenous mode of production that is distinct from and directly opposed to capitalism. As a result, the solutions to market crises have often been at the expense of Indigenous peoples. Moreover, Indigenous peoples’ land and homes remain outside the purview of the market, making them particularly attractive for the expansionary market fix to capitalism in crisis.

The CEC report is teeming with examples of this process.

When Manitoba Hydro flooded Chemawawin Cree Nation land and forced the community to relocate in 1960, it did so because the market placed no value on the land. That land was principally used to facilitate the aforementioned Indigenous mode of production. To destroy it would help to choke out the material and social basis of the mode of production and, counter to the intuitive, create potential market value.

The massive hydro dam projects in the ’60s and ’70s that formed the backdrop of the horrific stories found in the CEC report are also a direct expression of temporary fixes for the contradictions of capitalism.

The sheer amount of materials and manpower required to bring into existence Manitoba Hydro’s sprawling northern infrastructure made the northern expansion an important release for pent-up, uninvested profits for much of central Canada. Public works, including those helmed by Hydro, play a vital role in temporarily stabilizing capitalism.

Moving forward, the provincial government should work with Indigenous peoples to restore and grow modes of production that lie

outside of capitalism. Whether that be a socialist mode of production or what Indigenous scholar Glenn Coulthard calls for, expanding the existing Indigenous mode of production.

But without understanding the capitalist system’s underlying role in all of this and acting to dismantle the processes that enabled the dehumanization and dispossession of Indigenous peoples, the CEC report’s lessons will never be understood.

And to be clear, there is a deep desire by ardent supporters of capitalism to confuse this issue.

So, when right-wing columnists rightly criticize Manitoba Hydro over its egregious crimes, there is a

fundamental need to contextualize the actions of the crown corporation while doing so. Because those very right-wingers will use this CEC report to vulgarize the true underpinning causes of what is found in the CEC to privatize Hydro.

And of course, capitalism’s insatiable desire to marketize everything will gladly oblige. Then, when the next crisis comes, Indigenous peoples will again bear the brunt of the brutal market solutions imposed to repair the illogical and unstable market system. Meanwhile, no real understanding or repair of, nor plan of action to address, the problems raised in the CEC report will ever materialize.

eginning next week, all U of M faculty, instructors and anyone else at all scheduled to present will be required to demonstrate a basic level of electronic competence before being allowed on campus.

University officials are moving swiftly to respond to a developing crisis that is seeing between 15-20 minutes shaved off the beginning of nearly every class while instructors fuss about with projectors, computers and document readers.

“It’s gotten to the point where not a damn thing can get done at this university without some sort of frustrating episode that ultimately boils down to user error,” said James Frum, the university’s lead tech guy.

Until all faculty and instructors have completed a week-long certificate program in operations and basic troubleshooting — which is expected to be completed by November — all classes will be granted a 15-minute float period at the end of each session to make up for the lost time.

The Noble Thiefs inspired by cases in America for new song

rogressive-metal rock band Skyharbor released its new album Sunshine Dust this month after working on it for almost four years.

Skyharbor members from India and the U.S. met over the internet, joining together to tour across the globe, creating a worldwide fan base on the merits of their music.

It started off as guitarist Keshav Dhar’s studio project before he was contacted by former lead singer Daniel Tompkins for collaboration. At the same time, Dhar was discussing the possibility of taking his music live with Maryland-based drummer Anup Sastry. From then, changes were made to the composition of the band, welcoming Eric Emery as the new lead singer.

The band consists of vocalist Myron Dean, bassist Johannes Lodewyks, guitarist Riley Hastings and drummer Joel Armstrong. The Noble Thiefs started out as a house party band in Winnipeg in 2009, but the band has since adjusted their sound from their original rock and roll to soul and R&B. Together, the quartet hopes to bring a universally relatable experience to their listeners through their lyrics and sound.

“We try to write songs that are accessible and kind of hard-hitting in certain respects but can also be kind of brought into different facets of different people’s lives,” Lodewyks said.

“I think everyone has that certain cry out of ‘Where’s your love for me?’”

“It’s kind of just like a cry unto the world [...] — you know, we could all use a little bit more love and we could all use a little more unity in those situations,” he said.

“It’s not me against you or us against them. It’s very much we kind of need to check ourselves in social situations and realize that we’re kind of all in this together.”

While “16 Candles” is about police brutality, the band drew heavily on the emotional experience of hearing about the Laquan

McDonald shooting in Chicago.

McDonald was shot and killed by a police officer in October 2014, inciting protests against police brutality.

Lodewyks recounted the moment when footage of the McDonald shooting was released, where he and his bandmates joined a march through Lower Manhattan in protest of police brutality. He said that the 16 candles in the song represented the 16 bullets that pierced the young boy’s body.

“We were in St. Mark’s Place, which is in the East Village of lower Manhattan — we were there three years ago for a show we were playing for American Thanksgiving,” Lodewyks said. “It was the same night that there was footage of the Laquan McDonald shooting in Chicago.” The video of the shooting was released on Nov. 24, 2015, a year after McDonald’s death.

“It’s quite surreal to see, especially as Canadians, because we always see police brutality and racism kind of being south of the border,” said Lodewyks.

“You know, it really doesn’t affect you until it truly does, and that was kind of first-hand that threw us in the middle of that.”

Lodewyks added that the tragedy was a reminder of how important it is to look after one another, especially in painful times.

Bisons quarterback Des Catellier shares his recruitment story JASON PCHAJEK, STAFF

n an interview with UMFM’s This Week in Bison Sports, U of M Bisons football quarterback Des Catellier gave Bisons fans gave an inside look at the Calgary-born QB’s football journey, and where he hopes it takes him.

Like many Canadian children, Catellier began playing hockey at a young age and had dreams of making the NHL, but after being passed over by a preferred team in seventh grade he began playing football.

The decision turned out well for Catellier as he took to his new sport quickly.

“I went out, tried it out and after my first practice was the starting quarterback on the team, and just loved it ever since then,” Catellier said.

“Turns out I wasn’t too bad at it and took a couple years for me to really set in that I was liking football more than hockey, but once I made that transition to take football seriously and take football somewhere was probably around high school.”

Looking toward his own potential professional career, Catellier hinted that he may be torn between two clubs.

“It would mean so much to me to make a CFL roster in the first place,” he said.

“But, being a Blue Bomber would be […] I’ve always followed them, my dad’s from here […] so it would be a really good feeling.”

Catellier also spoke highly of his home town Calgary Stampeders, saying it would “mean absolutely everything to me,” but maintaining that “just making any CFL roster would be a dream come true.”

Martinez Lagunas said the result reflected that her players “have been learning so much” and “are now implementing many of the concepts that we have learned in the past, and now they are able to put them and implement them on the field against the best opponents. That’s amazing.”

In the second half the game, the teams traded chances and the Bisons came close to breaking through in the scoreless game.

A foul just outside the penalty area set the herd up for a free kick and Amanda Wong hammered a shot around the defending wall, but Spartans keeper Rachel Sydor was equal to the task.

The ball dropped off Sydor’s hands but the Bisons could not beat the Trinity Western defenders back and

the chance was cleared.

The Spartans winner came off the foot of Seina Kashima late in stoppage time. Her shot from just beyond the penalty area curved and lifted into the top corner on Bisons keeper Madison Wilford, giving the Spartans the 1-0 win.
