UMSU hosts rally in support of international student healthcare Students from here and abroad take to the Manitoba Legislative Building to criticize cuts TY BRASS, STAFF

U

MSU organized a rally on the steps of the Manitoba Legislative Building to call for a reduction to the cost of international student healthcare.

Over 50 students, both international and domestic, attended the event at noon Sept. 4, the first day of classes at the U of M.

— Fardeen Zardeef, international student The cost increase was announced in June after the U of M board of governors approved an amended contract increasing the full-year rate for international healthcare from $606 to $864. The increase came less than a year after the province cut universal healthcare coverage for international students.

The amended contract was a direct result of the provincial government’s decision to hike the non-resident healthcare surcharge from 75 per cent to 200 per cent.

The surcharge increase means that when an international student requires a procedure, the insurer will incur an additional charge of 200 per cent.

The U of M announced it would cover international student healthcare premiums for the 2018-19 year, but this fall international students will begin paying the full, increased price.

At the board of governor’s meeting where the amended contract was approved, UMSU voiced opposition

to the increase, and has since held letter-writing and poster-making events in preparation for its Sept. 4 Health Has No Borders rally.

UMSU president Jakob Sanderson said he hopes the event proves to not be just a rally, but a movement.

“I’ve said this before, there’s no issue that I hear more of from in my Instagram messages, Facebook messages, texts, emails, than from international students worried and scared that their costs are rising at an astronomical rate that they did not expect and they cannot afford,” he said.

“Healthcare is a fundamental human right, and for international students to have that ripped away from them, and to have costs now that are higher than anywhere else in this entire country is backwards.

“It’s regressive economically, and it’s an attack on these students.”

“The fight doesn’t end on Sept. 10,” he said, referring to this week’s provincial election.

UMSU international student representative Victoria Nwabuisi said she believes Manitobans would factor international student healthcare into their provincial voting if they were aware of the issue.

“We’re here today because going into the election on Sept. 10 we want Manitobans to be sensitized about some of the issues that are very core issues that are affecting international students in this community,” she said.

“I know that Manitobans in the community, they are very goodnatured, and I believe that if only they knew some of the things that we are dealing with, they would be more considerate, or factor that in when they are going in to put their votes because at the very forefront of their mind they know that they’re responsible for whichever government goes into power.”

“Why am I here today? Because I’m a grad student,” he said.

“Grad students, we’re all on the same team, we’re one big family, we all help each other out. I’m not an international student but I have tons of friends who are international students, both grad and undergrad as well.”

he newly-created Black Medical Students Association (BMSA) held an event promoting representation in the medical field on the U of M Bannatyne campus Sunday.

Roughly 90 attendees, mostly young black students, participated in a day of keynote speakers, workshops and discussions at the Black Health Symposium.

Ted Mokonnen, a medical student interested in a career in physical therapy, attended the event looking for career guidance.

“I attended today’s event mostly for guidance, definitely for the fact that I don’t see a lot of representation in my shade of skin in the medical field,” he said.

“But another aspect of why I wanted to come was just for, I guess the mechanics, the workings, how applications work, and just guidance in the route to get to where I want to be.”

Aleena Okbay, a U of M medical student, said she is also concerned about representation and how it directly affects students in the field.

“What they said today in this lecture, they were saying how you kind of keep yourself in this mental prison of thinking you’re not capable, or maybe there’s something innate and wrong with you,” she said.

“You kind of believe there’s a disadvantage about yourself.

“But you need to understand that you should be proud to be black, and that’s definitely an advantage, and you’re definitely just as capable as everyone else.”

Following Tuesday’s provincial election, the outcome of which was decided after publication, the SFCC will continue to campaign on a larger scale and will do similar work for the upcoming federal election.

To create working opportunities, the letter calls for an increase in undergraduate and graduate research opportunities, more fund-

ing for the Undergraduate Student Research Awards, “work-integrated learning opportunities” and more quality jobs for graduates.

It also asks for international students participating in those opportunities to be able to put those hours towards permanent residency eligibility.

To “support Indigenous students and the calls of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission,” the letter asks leaders to support “ending the backlog of Indigenous students waiting for funding to enter their post-secondary education.” Currently, only 21 per cent of eligible Indigenous students are funded by the Post Secondary Student Support Program.

“We call on you to remember the 2.5 million students, their families, and Canadian citizens who are passionate about an affordable and accessible post-secondary education system and are counting on you as their next government,” reads the letter.

UMSU will be participating in the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations’ federal election voting campaign, which Sanderson said he hopes will help students in “using our collective influence to push student issues to the forefront.”

UMSU will be hosting a federal local candidates debate on Oct. 3 focused on the environment.

Two new Indigenous language courses offered at U of M Dakota and Michif courses join Cree and Ojibway TY BRASS, STAFF

akota and Michif are being taught for the first time at the U of M this year.

The two new courses, topics in Indigenous languages: Dakota, and topics in Indigenous languages: Michif, join the university’s Cree and Ojibway courses, which have been taught at the U of M for decades.

The Dakota course is being taught by Kevin Tacan, who teaches language at Brandon University and in Brandon K to 12 schooling. Heather Souter is teaching the Michif course through a mix of distance learning and inclass teaching.

Each language course is made up of two three-credit hour sections, with the first half of topics in Indigenous languages: Michif having been taught this summer and again this fall alongside the Dakota language course. The second part of each course will be available for the winter 2020 term.

While associate professor and head of the department of native studies Cary Miller said she is hopeful about the courses’ future,

she explained that they would, like any others, be at risk of elimination if enrolment is not strong.

“There certainly are senses of how many students need to be in a class in order to pay for the cost of instruction, and cost of instruction is not just the salary of the individual teaching, it’s the lights, it’s the building space, it’s all of those kinds of things,” she said.

“Generally, the expectation is that you need at least 10 students to enrol for it to be paying for itself, shall we say, to not take the dean’s office into deficit.”

According to Miller, the Ojibway and Cree courses usually have waitlists.

On the possibility of creating courses for more languages, Miller said it depended on demand. She mentioned Inuit, Dene and OjiCree as possible future offerings, and that she would like to increase the scope of the current languages taught.

“I’d like to see us get to a point where we can teach second-year Cree, and third-year,” she said.

“It’s going to mean making some

connections with the community, having some conversations with the dean’s office about expected enrolments.”

Miller went on to explain the difficulties of keeping up enrolment in language courses.

“You start with 30 students in the first level class, but you generally lose statistically 50 per cent between the first year and the second year.

So your second-year class, you have strong enrolment if you have 15,” she said.

“My hope is, through wait-listing,

we’ll be able to show that there’s a need to offer two sections of the first-year level that will guarantee the numbers going up into second and third-year that we need to have to really make these programs strong and consistent.”

According to Miller, enrolment in Indigenous language courses is usually made up of students from communities where that language is spoken who are looking to learn the language of their communities.

“We also do get a smattering of linguistics students who are coming in from a variety of backgrounds, but the majority of students that we’re serving are students learning the language of their communities that are currently endangered,” she said.

“It’s not just something that is about heritage. It’s about relating to community.”

“As we learn our Indigenous languages, we are working to preserve our Indigenous intellectual traditions, our Indigenous knowledge.

Because if we lose the language that articulates these abstract ideas, it’s gone.”

Lil Nas X rides out of Frosh Fest MALAK ABAS, STAFF

A

s it turns out, Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” does not ride through Winnipeg.

The popular rapper, known for recent hits including “Panini” and “Old Town Road” — which recently was ranked number one on Billboard’s Songs of the Summer 2019 chart — pulled out of his scheduled performance at Frosh Fest this Saturday.

UMSU released a statement through the Instagram story feature, saying the situation was due to “circumstances entirely beyond [its] control.”

“We are working on his replacement to continue with an unforgettable show this Saturday that is worthy of our centennial celebration and of the incredible students on this campus,” the statement reads.

Artists Tyga, Faouzia and Myazwe are still slated to perform.

Frosh Fest has had a troubled history in recent years. In 2016, UMSU refunded $10,000 to the University 1 Student Council (U1SC) after a 2015 contract wherein U1SC agreed to pay $40,000 to UMSU to support Frosh Fest was later accused of being invalid.

While the contract was formally deemed valid, UMSU also covered U1SC’s $17,300 debt to UMSU with a zero-interest loan to be paid back over five years.

It also paid out $5,000 from the UMSU endowment fund to cover the cost of U1 scholarships and either $750 in gift certificates to Degrees and the Hub or $500 in cash.

In 2017, then-UMSU vicepresident external Wilfred Sam-King said the festival was financially unsuccessful and the union needed to “completely rebrand” Frosh or cancel it.

Last year’s Frosh festivities included local comedians and a silent headphone dance party.

Tickets were $20 and sold out.

UMSU president Jakob Sanderson said Lil Nas X pulling out would not cost students anything this year, as, according to Sanderson, he cancelled due to another engagement.

Lil Nas X also cancelled his show at the University of British Columbia’s Welcome Back BBQ , where he was slated to perform.

Movie monopolies bad news for consumers Disney’s loss of Spider-Man ultimately good for diversity of film and thought TY BRASS, STAFF

T

he Walt Disney Company lost Spider-Man, and, looking at Twitter on the day, you’d have thought the world had ended.

It hadn’t, but Disney-owned Marvel Entertainment’s world did get a little smaller after the special relationship between Sony and Disney broke down, ripping Spider-Man out of the franchise’s future.

The film rights to Spider-Man, one of the most recognizable Marvel characters, have belonged to Sony Pictures for decades. In 2015, after years of fans hoping and dreaming, it was announced that Spider-Man would become a part of Marvel Studios’ sprawling cinematic universe, even while Sony Pictures retained the rights to the character.

The deal held strong until it was announced in August that SpiderMan would no longer be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after Disney attempted to renegotiate for a higher stake in the gross earnings.

Fans are understandably upset.

A beloved character is being ripped from the franchise with what will probably become either an abrupt resolution or none at all for a number of dangling plot threads.

What is less understandable is the many people backing Disney in the

conflict, seemingly without much thought beyond their want for more Spider-Man. Many rabid Disney fans are arguing for Sony Pictures to cave to Marvel/Disney’s demands, or to outright sell back the movie rights to Spider-Man.

The House of Mouse is on the way to a media monopoly and a lot of people don’t seem to care as long as they get to see Spider-Man continue to be an Avenger In either case, the big company gets what it wants and takes away earnings from the smaller (albeit still pretty big) company.

Disney recently acquired the film production businesses of 21st Century Fox, another media giant.

Online buzz around the deal was dominated by fans celebrating Marvel’s acquisition of the rights to properties such as the Fantastic Four

and X-Men, with voices decrying the frightening media consolidation largely drowned out.

In the past two decades, Disney has purchased Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox. It’s a portfolio that has already generated billions for the media giant, and there’s little reason to think it plans on slowing down.

With Disney’s own streaming service, Disney+, launching this year, it would be unsurprising to see streaming giant Netflix eventually cowed into submission.

It isn’t hard to imagine a future where the average person’s entertainment media consumption is made up almost entirely of Disney-owned theatrical releases and Disney’s streaming service. That’s a scary proposition.

Competition is good for the consumer, and there won’t be a lot of that if Disney gets much bigger. It already throws its weight around to bully smaller businesses.

For years, Disney has required theatres who want to show their movies to run them for a minimum number of weeks with a minimum number of showings per day, something that just isn’t feasible for many independent cinemas.

This begs the question of why Manitoba is governed by a party with a leader who has made privatization and private sector growth a cornerstone of the party’s platform when the province at large is overwhelmingly against it.

What governments with this track record of privatization all have in common is an urge to serve the interests of corporations rather than the interests of their constituents.

The reason for this is an obvious conflict of interest and a revolving door of businesspeople becoming politicians, subsequently being welcomed back to this corporate club after retirement.

This tune has been played time and time again in Manitoba. It happened in 1997 when Gary Filmon privatized Manitoba Telephone System, which had been a Crown corporation

for over 90 years. Over the following years, rates rose well over the rate of the cost of living. The privatized Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. eventually merged with Bell, giving consumers fewer choices, resulting in higher costs and leaving some without any service at all.

After snatching Manitoba’s entire telecom industry and putting it in the hands of a very few, Filmon’s Progressive Conservatives were later thrown out of office by voters, a change which led to his resignation.

Following his retirement from politics, he became a business consultant and was put on the boards of several provincial and national organizations.

Today, Premier Brian Pallister shares the same story. An incredibly rich private insurance company executive, sporting a $2 million mansion on Wellington Crescent and a vacation home in Costa Rica, Pallister is clearly a well-connected and wealthy businessman.

Similar to that of Filmon, his legacy will be an unpopular rise in the cost of living of ordinary Manitobans while his executive buddies were handed the keys to the Crown corporations that put the well-being of Manitobans over profit.

The uncomfortable truth is that many voters simply will not learn this lesson and will keep voting for these commandeering, corrupt individuals.

It does not take a political genius to realize that Manitoba requires far more comprehensive laws that address the revolving door between the legislature and big business. Until this is properly resolved, many will continue to be blind to the antics of well-connected, self-serving millionaires.

Manitobans do not want the privatization of government-run industry. This fact should be reflected in who leads the province.

Dirks’s upcoming album is expected to showcase her full vocal and thematic range.

She said creating Fear was “a long and beautiful and hard process.”

Fear was born out of a collaborative writing session with Dirks’s close-knit production team, which includes Matt Schellenberg (Royal Canoe) and Matt Peters (Royal Canoe), along with Marcus Paquin (The National, Arcade Fire, Local Natives).

“We had a bit of a writing retreat at Marcus’s studio in Montreal and we wrote four songs and then we decided we had a record on our hands,” she said.

The more work the group did, the more the album came together organically.

“It’s very familial,” Dirks said of her production team.

“If you don’t surround yourself with people that you care about and that care about you and have your best interests at heart and that you feel like understand you, [the process] can be even harder.”

Opening track “The Other Side” is an eerie, gospel-influenced number that sets the tone for the album perfectly — a bittersweet, yearning track that shows off Dirks’s unique style and vocal prowess.

Audiences will already be familiar with the more energetic songs on the album — “Beats,” “Living At The Ceiling,” “The Light” and “Hanging On A Line” have already been released as singles. The title track, “Fear,” has also been performed at her shows since last year.

It is one of the standouts of the whole album, a frenetically paced, passionate track with a catchy hook.

Many of the other tracks are slower tunes, but with distinct instrumentals and subject matter.

“Put It Away” ends the album on a more upbeat note after a succession of slower, sadder tracks like “Mirror Talk” and “Dead Flowers.”

The softer section of Fear will not put you to sleep, though — those tracks are captivating in their depth and emotion.

Dirks is clearly comfortable creating a beautiful alternative pop ballad, but it would be exciting to see her experiment more with other musical styles. More wound up, energizing tracks like “Fear” would be fun to see in the future.

With her pipes, she can really do anything.

The vocalist has been a staple of the Winnipeg music scene for some time now, drawing large crowds in with her powerful, emotive vocals and eccentric aesthetic.

She is likely to grow her fan base with a new body of work. While never straying too far from her usual song structure and style, her songs are sure to move listeners.

The styles of Matt Schellenberg (Royal Canoe), Matt Peters (Royal Canoe) and Marcus Paquin (The National, Arcade Fire, Local Natives) — who co-wrote and coproduced the album — are apparent in the tracks. Fear is full of textured synths, slow strings, pop and blues percussion and influences spanning R&B, gospel, indie rock and jazz.

Recurring themes of personal growth, self-doubt and romantic failures are Dirks’s signature. Her lyrics are original in their approach and tone — she approaches her emotional turmoil with honesty.

Her lyrics span from devastating — “And anyway, any day/I wish I was (ooo)/Anyone else instead of myself” to cheeky — “You’re gonna hurt yourself/it’s not your birthday baby” as heard within the song Want us to review your band?

The 2019 season got off to a less than stellar start Friday, as the Bisons fell 2-1 to the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies thanks to a pair of second-half mistakes.

Manitoba was dominant in the first half, but was unable to capitalize on the chances coming its way, something Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas noted her club needs to fix moving forward.

Saskatchewan, meanwhile, turned Manitoba mistakes into goals to snag the win on Bisons turf.

hey say nothing can be certain in life but death, taxes and the University of Calgary Dinos winning football games. The latter at least felt true Friday as the U of M Bisons football team dropped a 24-10 decision to the Dinos in Calgary.

A first quarter safety got the herd off on the right foot with a 2-0 lead, but from there the Dinos woke up and took over the game.

Calgary quarterback Adam Sinagra found Tyson Philpot with a 36-yard pass and Niko DiFonte knocked down the conversion for a 7-2 Dinos lead at the end of the first quarter.

Manitoba never again took the lead.

After another Bisons safety to open the second quarter, Dallas Boath snagged a pair of short-yardage passes from Sinagra — with a Calgary safety tucked in between — to extend the Dinos lead to 24-4 before Manitoba could respond.

In the waning seconds of the

opening half, Bisons kicker Matt Riley sent a 28-yard kick through the uprights for a field goal, cutting the Calgary lead to 24-7 at halftime.

Manitoba quarterback Des Catellier foiled his rival Sinagra in the rush for passing yards with 271 yards to Sinagra’s 207.

The herd also outpaced its prehistoric opponent 124-120 in rushing

yards.

Defence was a difference maker with Calgary picking up three interceptions on the day while Sinagra was perfect against the herd. Calgary was able to keep the Bisons at bay when it counted, while capitalizing on its own opportunities.

Both Boath touchdowns came in the Manitoba red zone, with the first coming off a snap at the Bisons 11-yard line and the second off a snap at the eight-yard line.

Manitoba, meanwhile, was largely kept to its own side of the field, with seven of the club’s 15 drives ending in friendly territory.

The herd drove as far as the Calgary red zone just once, making it to the Dinos 13-yard line on the team’s second-last possession of the night.

The loss drops the Bisons to 1-1 on since the start of the 2017-18 season, the season, while Calgary improves posting an impressive 11 wins. to 2-0 on the year so far.

Calgary’s last loss came Oct. 28, The Dinos have now gone unde- 2017, against the University of Alberta feated in regular-season competition Golden Bears in a lopsided 53-3 affair.
