spokesperson for the U of M has confirmed there are currently five open investigations under the U of M’s respectful work and learning environment policy and sexual assault policy.

Out of the five investigations, one involves sexual assault and personal harassment, one involves sexual assault and sexual harassment, one involves sexual harassment and two involve human rights claims.

All five complaints have faculty as the respondent. Out of the five respondents, two are currently on leave.

U of M president and vice-chancellor David Barnard apologized to students affected by incidents of inappropriate behaviour, including sexual violence on campus, at a media conference Sept. 5 — the first day of classes.

“Inappropriate behaviour, including sexual harassment and sexual assault on campus, is unacceptable and, quite honestly, I find it to be horrible and reprehensible,” Barnard said.

“Today, I’m here to apologize to students who’ve experienced such inappropriate behaviour. I am sorry.

I am deeply sorry.”

The apology, the first publicly concerning the issue from the university, came after two prominent cases of

sexual harassment and assault by U of M professors toward students became public in a little more than a year. It also comes shortly after the university’s board of governors held two emergency meetings in one week in late August.

Barnard would not confirm if the meetings related to the university’s handling of sexual assault and harassment complaints.

In 2017, it was reported that jazz professor Steve Kirby was allowed to retire from the U of M after an internal investigation found allegations of sexual harassment against him held merit.

In August, oncologist and former associate dean at the faculty of medicine Gary Allan Joseph Harding was convicted of professional misconduct and stripped of his medical licence after he allegedly made repeated sexual advances toward two students, both of whom said it was not consensual.

While Harding denied any sexual contact, he did acknowledge his actions to be “horrendous” and “even harassing.”

The U of M is paying the fees for the private insurance healthcare plan for the 2018-2019 year.

Starting September 2019, however, international students will have to pay their own premiums.

n absurd and curious scene is playing out in Ottawa this week as a single contract negotiation threatens to upend production of the capital’s two English daily newspapers.

Postmedia Network, the media behemoth that owns both the Ottawa Citizen and the Ottawa Sun, informed the union representing workers at both papers — which operate out of a single newsroom — that if its final offer is not voted on and accepted by the end of Wednesday, workers will be locked out Thursday.

Beyond exemplifying the continued pressure management applies to working newsrooms as it fails to effectively monetize what should more rightly be understood as a public service, the episode neatly illuminates the ridiculous nature of newspaper ownership in Canada and why bloated networks like Postmedia ought to be broken up.

The union representing Sun journalists said the memo never reached the newsroom. But it didn’t really have to. Whatever was reported after the release of the leaked memo must be understood to be influenced by management, even indirectly.

Local editors must be free to endorse the candidates and policies that suit the communities they report on, not handed the directive from on high.

Better yet, they should be free to not endorse any party or candidate at all but argue for and analyze policies directly relevant to the communities they serve.

When too few command too much of what is reported and presented as news and informed analysis, the environment is ripe for abuse.

Readers presented with two papers, published under two banners, can be forgiven for believing they are consuming varying perspectives.

Postmedia should not be forgiven for abusing that trust.

Overhauls required in response to sexual assault Retributive mechanisms needed to correct for unequal distributions of power and privilege SHAWN HUBERDEAU

P

ublic apologies serve to quiet, to mask, to chill. For this reason, president Barnard’s words must be rejected.

Once offered, the onus turns away from the perpetrator and attention becomes fixed on the question of the apology itself. Was it wellintentioned? Well-staged? Should its targets accept it?

These are all irrelevant questions while living under a crisis of justice.

The #MeToo movement has brought to the masses a style of consciousness-raising once practiced locally by radicals in the feminist and lesbian-separatist movements. What this practice reveals (as experienced in the black power movement, and the workers’ movement prior) is a common ancestry — that the plight of the downtrodden is not simply reducible to individual idiosyncrasies or personal failings, but rather structural features of society and its failings.

The public process of accepting that the condition of women constitutes a crisis of justice means there is a progressive momentum which cannot be allowed to be lost. Apologies issued from the detached leader of a powerful institution which does not speak on behalf of the perpetrators is a distraction from the pressing project of creating change in the interests of those marginalized by current practices.

Of course, Barnard and viceprovost students Susan Gottheil have promised changes.

Some changes they are.

Students are told they will receive better supports on campus.

Meanwhile, existing university mental health supports are by definition mere general counselling services, lacking in high-quality professional care. Pre-existing infrastructure is unable to even support its own services. Already, the student counselling centre is said to hear

Expanding resources for services that are already choked is not what makes the administration’s proposals unsatisfactory. Even sinking ships need someone bailing water. No, it is the generally vague character of the recommended changes — reviews of old policies with zero new directions identified, “more” resources, as well as “more” mandatory orientations, workshops and community consultations.

Contrary to the liberal dictum running amok in common explanations of legality, law maintains and dynamizes the motions of power in society. Legal regimes are not neutral bodies possessing glacial indifference.

This past year was quite the ride, with threats to our very existence as well as a video series that caused a bit of a stir.

The Toban Talkback series, minutelong clips of me asking people random questions, was some of the most fun I had at the Toban. I am proud of the videos we produced, even the deleted — albeit viral — one.

I hope the video series continues,

as I think it should.

I want to thank everyone who had a hand in shaping the writer I am today. I still have a lot to learn, but without the stringent copy editing, guidance and mentoring I received I would not be where I am today.

he transition from high school to university can be difficult, but some students face the additional stress that comes with moving away from home, leaving family members and, for some, leaving the country they were born in.

Living on campus offers a chance to build a new social network with a student’s newfound freedom. At the U of M, several different buildings house non-local students that come together to form a community with people from many backgrounds.

George Hare is a first-year engineering student from Minnesota. He said that initially he was afraid he would have trouble making connections, but after attending socials and meeting people with similar interests, he has made several friends.

“I’m on the engineering floor which is all engineering students, so that’s been kind of interesting,” Hare said.

“When we have a 7:30 a.m. orientation, we all have to get up at the same time and we run into each other in the hall.”

Paige Krentz, a former residence student from Thompson, Man., gave Hare and other first year students some advice when it came to residence life.

“Don’t date anyone on your floor, go to the events and don’t stick super close to your friends that you already have — you know, branch out a little bit,” Krentz said.

n a wild back and forth game Friday night, the U of M Bisons mounted a failed comeback late in the fourth quarter, dropping the home opener to the No. 10 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Huskies were on the board first midway through the opening quarter with a field goal by Sean Stenger. The 29-yard kick sailed through the uprights for a 3-0 Saskatchewan lead.

The home side came charging back with a touchdown of its own to take the lead four minutes later.

On the next drive, Des Catellier connected with Macho Bockru for the score, following a quick two-yard run by Jamel Lyles, and a convert by Brad Mikoluff made it 7-3 Manitoba.

The Bisons’ lead was short lived, however, as the Huskies worked back down field and Kyle Siemens found Joey Trumpy deep in the Bisons end-

zone with a 17-yard pass for the score.

Saskatchewan added a one-point convert by Stenger, and the first quarter ended at 10-7 Huskies.

Gaudes brings fresh perspective to Bison Sports Social media co-ordinator steps onto bigger platform JASON PCHAJEK, STAFF

Gaudes was named sports John information and digital media coordinator this summer and he has big plans for Bison Sports.

He was formerly the Bison Sports social media co-ordinator, but will be stepping into an expanded role which includes the duties of former sports information director, Chris Zuk.

“We generally try to get that awareness up because we want to create that kind of college sports atmosphere you know” — John Gaudes, sports information and digital media coordinator at Bison Sports Gaude’s new role extends beyond operating all the Bisons social media accounts. He now works to publicize the Bisons on a broader scale, growing the brand and expanding its place in media.

In an interview with UMFM Gaudes said, “I’m not necessarily a face in the shadows, but somebody who works on getting the Bisons in media, works on promoting the Bisons on social media, so I’m the man behind the social media accounts and stuff like that.”

For Gaudes, the first step for

growing support for the Bisons is to get students on campus involved.

“We’re on a commuter campus here so our efforts always start with campus,” he said. “We always reinforce that U of M students can come to all our games for free."

Gaudes said he hopes his efforts will see the Bisons become a staple in the community sports landscape.

“We generally try to get that awareness up because we want to create that kind of college sports atmosphere, you know,” he said.

“It’s why I got involved with the Bisons in the first place. It’s something that’s so hyped up in the States, and it’s less so really across Canada.

I think there’s just less awareness in general about U Sports and, locally, Canada West.”

Gaudes also said “upping attendance, I think, is the bread and butter of getting more passion about teams, because it is about word of mouth.

“It’s something to do on Friday night or Saturday night, you get your friends, you come to the game and it’s a low-cost way to spend a night out.”

This community building approach goes beyond growing the Bisons fan base. Gaudes said improving the relationships between Bison Sports, the Manitoban and 101.5 UMFM is instrumental in growing the Bisons brand.

“Definitely one of the most exciting things for me this year is to see Canada West TV, our webcasts, combine with what UMFM are doing with their broadcasts in hockey and in football as well,” he said.

“I’m so happy we’re doing that, because I think the UMFM team, the guys who call the games at all our venues are very passionate, they’re very knowledgeable about our teams,

they get to know the players. And on a week-to-week basis having consistency in voice is just so important.”

For Gaudes, a major impetus for him joining Bison Sports and working hard to increase its visibility is a love of sports which has guided his career.

“I’ve always been passionate about sports growing up,” he said.

“I’m a big basketball guy but I’ll watch anything that’s on and that’s been going for a long time. I think in high school I decided to change gears from general writing to more

Gaudes went into creative communications, focusing more on public relations as opposed to journalism, and, following graduation, began his career in sports.

His first big break came with SB Nation’s Raptors HQ blog, where he worked as an editor.

“They came to me at kind of the perfect time,” he said.

“I was working with really good editors,” he added.

“They really helped me kind of write for the internet, write for peo-

ple who are reading about the team every day.”

Prior to entering his current position, Gaudes worked part-time for Bison Sports for about seven years, while gaining experience doing design work in diverse fields.

Gaudes said he worked “in agriculture, education, anything I could do, and kind of writing on the side, building the resumé and stuff like that to get to an opportunity like this and I have nothing but good things to say about Bison Sports and the team that we have.”

Even with this increase in competition level, Hovi said she is confident her offseason training will be exactly what she needs when the Infernos’ training camp begins.

“I always take care of myself and make sure I’m in good shape,” she said.

When asked where being drafted ranks among all the past seasons’ accomplishments, Hovi was diplomatic and insisted that all were equally memorable.

“Last year was exceptional and I’m very fortunate to have experienced it all,” she said.

“I don’t rank things, they’re all unique experiences and I’m sure this upcoming season will be another learning point in my career.”

The Finn will not be the only Canada West product joining the Inferno, as Kaitlin Willoughby of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies was drafted just after Hovi in the seventh round.

Willoughby had a stellar collegiate career of her own, recording 111 points — 50 goals and 61 assists — in 132 games over five seasons with the Huskies. She was also instrumental in Saskatchewan’s fourth-place finish at the 2018 U Sports national championship.

Hovi leaves the Bisons a champion, bringing a veteran voice to the Calgary locker room and the experience of a big moment player. Despite being limited to just 51 games in three seasons with the herd due to injury and international commitments, Hovi put up 50 points — 21 goals and 29 assists.
