A “volunteer staff” member is defined as a person who has had three volunteer articles, photographs, or pieces of art of reasonable length and/or substance published in three different issues of the current publishing year of the Manitoban. Any individual who qualifies must be voted in by a majority vote at a Manitoban staff meeting. Elected representatives and non-students may be excluded from holding votes as volunteer staff members in accordance with the Manitoban Constitution.

The Manitoban is the official student newspaper of the University of Manitoba. It is published monthly during the summer and each week of regular classes during the academic year by the Manitoban Newspaper Publications Corporation.

The Manitoban is an independent and democratic student organization, open to participation from all students. It exists to serve its readers as students and citizens.

n Aug. 20, the Commerce Students’ Association hosted the first consent culture workshop of the school year, and it will not be the last.

U of M student associations can participate in consent culture training by contacting Justice for Women Manitoba, a student group that advocates for and provides consent education on campus.

o not let Steve Kirby’s crimes be a Trojan horse that kneecaps worker rights and privacy.

In February of 2017, six female U of M jazz students approached the university administration with claims that the former U of M jazz professor had harassed and sexually harassed them. An internal investigation was conducted and its findings, produced in June of that year, found the alleged sexual harassment of at least one student “had merit.”

The university proceeded to bungle what should have been the swift termination of Kirby and forwarding the evidence collected during the investigation to the police.

Instead, Kirby was allowed to retire from the U of M and was subsequently hired at Berklee College of Music. Later, once Berklee became aware of the allegations, Kirby was terminated from his new job.

In a bid to prevent this from happening again, the student group Justice for Women Manitoba, in a CBC story last week, called for the alteration of privacy law to enable schools to disclose details pertaining

On the second allegation, the one concerning the sexual assault, the university has the power to disclose the contents of its investigation to police and report an offence. Here the university failed to support the victim.

Instead, it fell to at least one of the victims of the alleged sexual assault to file a police report, without the support of the university, after it became clear that the institution ineptly failed to execute its own policy.

Climbing the steps to file a complaint should be made easier and additional supports to advise students on legal action need to be strengthened.

But we should not take a sledgehammer to worker rights — even when sexual misconduct is the central issue being investigated.

Nevertheless, this moment should be looked upon as a mark of shame on every administrator involved and a real moment of introspection to consider the competence of those who roost at the top.

Administration reclaiming campus from geese

he U of M administration is declaring its months-long operation to rid the Fort Garry campus of geese “an ongoing success.”

The announcement came a week after university officials first noticed a reduction in the number of honking avians on campus.

While warning that some geese could remain into September, U of M president David Barnard announced Tuesday that the campus was effectively under the control of the administration once again.

The news came from a press conference on the first floor of the campus’s engineering building.

the press conference itself as a sign of progress, noting that the last status report for the press in early July was hosted at the Bannatyne campus after the administration had lost control of the university’s main campus.

“The very fact that we’re able to hold this press conference here shows how far we’ve come,” said Barnard Barnard credited Derven Butafeld, the university’s new vice-president geese affairs, for the university’s success over the past several weeks.

Under Butafeld’s watch, the university developed a program to scare geese away through use of air

Butafeld also implemented the university’s new “no speed limit” policy in several areas where geese had become violent.

“We knew we had to take some drastic actions where students, faculty and staff’s safety was at stake.

Admittedly, a lot of people have been hit with cars as well, but the thing to remember is we got a lot of geese, too.”

Hoot Owl Festival brings familiar sound to the stage

s Manitoba’s festival season has slowly started winding down, festivalgoers were introduced to a new local festival that had a familiar feel.

Hoot Owl Festival is the reincarnation of the late Shine On Festival of Music and Art that took place from 2005 to 2017 in Kerry, Manitoba, at Beavercreek Park. This year, the festival ran from Aug. 23 to Aug. 26.

Fans of the old festival were relieved to learn the festival remained mostly unchanged, with the same do-it-yourself type of setup and kindhearted organizers. Kevin Repay and Rylie Saunders of the Village Idiots, a collective of local music lovers and organizers, promoted the event, managed the stage and acted as MCs. “It can certainly be a challenge to get a new name out there,” said Kevin Repay.

he transition between high school and university can be challenging or easy depending on the person.

Different emotions and hopes come from both the university and the firstyear students.

Francesca Espiritu, an incoming student to the U of M, said she is excited to explore new subjects and expose herself to new experiences.

“I’ve got cousins and other friends who’ve graduated [and] they all went to U of M, and from what I’ve learned they really like it there,” said Espiritu.

“They think it’s a really great environment, they really do a lot to support their students.”

She went on to say the U of M has a lot of options for classes and great professors instructing them.

he U of M Bisons football club kicked off the 2018 campaign this past weekend with a tight 30-20 loss to the UBC Thunderbirds.

The herd got on the board first with a Brad Mikoluff field goal from 18 yards out to make it 3-0 early in the first quarter, but UBC came flying back to take a 7-3 lead.

After working their way 53 yards down the field, the Thunderbirds were staring down the Bisons on the goal line. UBC running back Ben Cummings was given the ball on a run play and he carried it in for the one-yard score.

The herd added another field goal from Mikoluff, ending the quarter down 7-6.

Things went from bad to worse for Manitoba in the second quarter, when a Matt Riley punt was blocked and taken for a 42 yard journey by UBC defensive back Payton LaGrange. The touchdown extended to UBC lead to 14-6.

The herd was able to recover, however, as quarterback Des Catellier found receiver Riley Harrison in the end zone. The Harrison touchdown brought the Bisons within one point with a 14-13 score.

In the second half, UBC quarterback Michael O’Connor stretched the Thunderbirds lead, finding Kory Nagata with a 21-yard pass for the touchdown and 23-13 lead.

But the herd responded once again.

In the fourth quarter, Catellier threw a 21-yard pass of his own, finding Dylan Schrot open downfield. Schrot carried it in for the touchdown and cut the deficit to just three points.

came off a 10-yard run by Nagata, as the Richmond-born running back’s second touchdown of the night sealed the win for UBC at 30-20.

Despite the 10-point difference on the scoreboard, the little things on the score sheet show promise for the Bisons. Manitoba won the yardage game — 468 to 446 — and although UBC had more completions, the Bisons got more yards on five fewer attempts — 379 to 309.

Third-year Bisons running back Jamel Lyles was a workhorse in the rush game. The Surrey-born Lyles had 73 of Manitoba’s 121 rushing yards, adding a further 52 yards receiving.

Schrot led the Bisons in receiving yards, with 142 yards on nine receptions and one touchdown.

At the other end of the field, all UBC offence ran through Nagata.

The running back led his team with

136 rushing yards and 93 receiving yards while adding two of the Thunderbirds’ three touchdowns.

On defence, Arjay Shelley led the way for Manitoba with 11 tackles — eight solo and three assisted.

Caleb Abraham also had four solo tackles and two assisted, while Brody Williams had a solo tackle and five assisted for Manitoba.

UBC was much busier on defence, with Stavros Katsantonis leading the way at 12 tackles — seven solo and five assisted.

Katsantonis was matched only by Ben Hladik with six solo tackles and six assisted.

The Bisons will be back in action for the club’s home opener against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday, Sept. 7 at Investors Group Field. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm CDT.
