Teepee on campus slashed Attack indicative of wider racism in Winnipeg and beyond, says NCTR director MALAK ABAS, STAFF

T

he teepee that sits beside the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) has been vandalized.

According to NCTR director Ry Moran, staff first observed the damage Aug. 12, meaning the attack happened at some point over the previous weekend.

“In times like this, it’s concerning, but we are fortunate here, I think, to have a strong community of people that’s going to keep moving on” — Ry Moran, NCTR director Moran said the teepee had been slashed in several places, one pole had been broken and the pole holding the smoke flap open had been removed and shoved through the side of the teepee.

He called the situation “disappointing and frustrating,” and believes the attack could have been motivated by racism.

“I think what is clear here is that a teepee is a very obvious cultural symbol of First Nations people, so

whoever did this was clearly desecrating a well-known, a well-understood, visual symbol of Indigenous identity,” he said.

“The exact motive behind it, we don’t know, but we certainly know that the action was such that there’s harm done to both something that is the property of another organization, demarcated space which is part of the NCTR, and then a visual symbol of Indigenous identity.”

The NCTR is hosted by the U of M and was created as part of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement to recognize the harm caused by the residential school system.

The centre is home to the entirety of archival materials collected by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

Moran said the incident was indicative of a wider constant battle.

“What I think is sad about this is it’s just yet another example of the very long-standing history that this country continues to exhibit towards Indigenous identities.”

The NCTR has contacted security services, which recommended the centre contact city police, and a police report has been filed.

Former University of Manitoba Indigenous Students’ Association co-president Alannah Mckay sent out a statement Aug. 13, calling the incident “a reflection of racism that exists at the U of M.” “With the start of a new term, I

think it is essential for students to be reassured that their safety is a priority,” she said.

“And on this issue, I hope you know that the Indigenous students on campus will support and appreciate the NCTR addressing this incident and reassuring them of their importance and safety here at the University of Manitoba.”

Moran said students who may feel

unsafe because of incidents like these should look to their communities for support.

“In times like this, it’s concerning, but we are fortunate here, I think, to have a strong community of people that’s going to keep moving on.”

Moran said there are plans in place to take the teepee down for repairs and that prior plans to add the NCTR’s logo to it will continue,

but emphasized the teepee will not be replaced.

“We’re going to let that teepee stand as a marker of what we have to endure as Indigenous people,” he said.

“We will let the truth of what happened to this teepee be a symbol of what we have to endure each and every single day as Indigenous peoples.”

Centennial Frosh artists announced Lineup includes Tyga, Lil Nas X TY BRASS, STAFF

MSU’s Centennial Frosh event — so named for 2019 being the student union’s 100th year — will be headlined by rappers Tyga and Lil Nas X. The two headliners are likely to be massive draws for the event, especially Lil Nas X with his song “Old Town Road” (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus) which has been on the Billboard Hot 100 for 25 consecutive weeks, having only just recently fallen from its spot at the top of the list down to fourth. Frosh will also feature artists Faouzia and Myaze.

The event will take place Sept. 14 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Bell MTS Place. Tickets went on sale Aug. 19, and the cheapest tickets available are $55 floor seats. All student tickets must be presented with student ID. Non-student tickets are $75.

An Aug. 19 UMSU Facebook post announced student tier 1 tickets have

sold out, with the post noting that tier 2 tickets are “moving fast.”

The lineup was announced by UMSU via social media Aug. 16. The announcement had been set for Aug. 7 but was delayed for over a week.

UMSU vice-president of community engagement Kyra Fanning explained that the delay was to ensure all contracts for the event has been signed prior to the announcement and sale of tickets.

“In honour of the centennial, this is the biggest and best lineup UMSU has ever had,” she said.

Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster, or through Sound Republic, Bassline Winnipeg or Exposure Events promotors. Starting Sept. 3, designated ticketing tables will be set out around campus and in UMSU University Centre. Students can also purchase tickets at the UMSU service centre.

hile transit workers have insisted they are not looking to start a back-to-school strike, UMSU is preparing for anything.

U-Passes are available now, and UMSU president Jakob Sanderson recommends students pick them up as usual. While U-Passes can not be reimbursed in full as per the contract UMSU has with the city, the contract also recommends reimbursement for transit stoppages lasting more than five days.

“So basically what would happen is

you pay for the full U-Pass, say that there’s a 20-day strike or lockout, we would figure out what portion of your U-Pass fee is that 20 days, and everyone would be eligible to get a refund on that 20 days,” he said.

While the contract only refers to possible stoppage as a “strike,” Sanderson said students should feel confident the reimbursement will happen even in the case of a lockout.

UMSU released a statement advising students on what to do in the case of a stoppage. It recommends

students look into carpooling services.

“We are very limited in terms of what we can do, both us and the university, for transportation,” Sanderson said.

“The expectation from university administration is that there might be upwards of 10,000 additional cars on the road coming to the University of Manitoba.”

UMCycle will be hosting group bike rides from downtown should the strike last into mid-September, and UMSU hopes to have a free bike valet

service set up in time.

“We make no promises to students [that] this is going to be able to account for all of the issues they’re going to be facing by transit, and frankly, it would probably be impossible to do that.”

A possible excused absence policy for students missing or late to classes because of transit stoppages is in its beginning stages.

“We’ve been in discussions already with administration about this, we’re going to continue to be, and so we’d

like to see a proactive policy laid out,” Sanderson said.

Sanderson could not confirm a set date when the policy would be ready to put into action, but said the union’s goal is to have it in place before any transit stoppage occurs.

According to Sanderson, there are approximately 17,000 daily U-Pass users.

Silence on sustainable sustenance

Key food production issues overlooked in provincial election EMELIA FOURNIER, STAFF

S

ustainable food practices are growing globally, but not within the 2019 Manitoba provincial election.

In the context of a climate emergency, ecologically sustainable food production has been overlooked by the provincial government.

The provincial election platforms have nearly completely omitted facilitating people’s access to locallyproduced and sustainably-produced products.

In 2017, agriculture in Manitoba made up 31 per cent of the province’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, excluding emissions from farm equipment or heating farm buildings.

Despite this, the Progressive Conservative (PC) government has largely framed agriculture through a business lens and ignored environmental issues surrounding food production.

Without explicit government action on food

production, the onus of prioritizing local sustainably produced food falls to the individual consumer.

In order to consume in an ecological way, consumers must attempt to find different sources of locally produced food within big box grocery stores or pricy farmers markets, hoping it is produced in an ecologically sound way.

Even shopping at farmer’s markets may not guarantee that the produce you are buying is local — there are no provincial or federal regulations prohibiting the reselling of foreign goods at farmer’s markets. Each individual market sets and enforces its own rules.

The provincial election platforms have proved that most of the parties are not prioritizing sustainable food production and consumption on a systematic level, with platforms emphasizing the business end of agriculture.

Sustainable food production must be integrated into government climate action plans, not left up to individual consumers.

One of Farm Fresh Food Hub’s projects is to create a distribution centre for sustainably-produced local food — something provincial governments should be prioritizing, facilitating and funding.

In addition, carbon pricing could further incentivize a shift away from greenhouse gas-emitting livestock and harmful fertilizers while encouraging smaller farms that emit less carbon.

Manitoban agriculture cannot just be treated as a business — it must be revamped through an ecological lens, with sustainability and consumer access to local goods at the forefront.

Unfortunately, only the Green Party seems to be aware of this.

By taking the path of least resistance, the executive reveals its true colours.

It’s easy to stay neutral, but it requires a spine to stand up for the principled position.

Until UMSU discovers this and reconciles with its past failures, its benefit to students is entirely diminished.

Hoot Owl Festival of Music and Art brought in more people, more sunshine, more installations and a stellar lineup for its second edition.

Aug. 22-25 made up the best extended weekend of my summer. The weather was beautiful, mild and sunny until the dreary, partied-out Sunday when we all had to pack up anyway.

The lineup showcased some of Winnipeg’s best talent, along with a few acts from across Canada. The dance parties went well into the early hours of the morning. Here is some photographic evidence of the relaxed vibe, good people and good times at Hoot Owl.

Manitoba Liberal Party

Party Leader Dougald Lamont promises to “end decades of neglect of Manitoba’s cultural infrastructure and cultural industries by the NDP and PCs.” The Liberal party stated they would allocate 2.5 per cent of existing infrastructure spending to “cultural infrastructure,” creating a Manitoba Cultural Capital Fund.

The party would also add to municipal funding in order to increase per capita arts funding by

$4 million in the first year.

In partnership with Travel Manitoba, the Liberal Party would also recognize Manitoban historic and cultural figures and sites by creating a “Blue Plaque” heritage program.

Lamont promises to “restore funding” to artistic workforce development and training, as well as to creative industries export programs.

Bisons domesticate Huskies Manitoba dominates Saskatchewan in 43-19 win

uskies may look like wolves, but the U of M Bisons football team made the University of Saskatchewan Huskies look like puppies in a 43-19 win at IG Field to open the 2019 Canada West season.

Macho Bockru led the way for the herd, with three touchdowns on the night to go with 99 yards on six receptions, while kicker Matt Riley went five-for-five on field goals.

Postgame, Bisons head coach Brian Dobie gave Riley high praise for his performance.

“I feel Matt’s a better punter than he is a kicker, but tonight he was perfect,” Dobie said.

“He was five-for-five and looked to me that it wasn’t close. It looked to me that most of those shots were very decisive shots, right between the uprights with plenty of leg on them.”

Friday’s game had a less than stellar start for the herd, with a David Solie field goal capping off the first Huskies drive for an early 3-0 lead. Manitoba responded on its next possession, charging down the field for Bockru’s first touchdown and a 7-3 Bisons lead in the first quarter.

There is power in a union MALAK ABAS, STAFF

Winnipeg workers and labour activists alike gathered and took to the streets to mark Labour Day Monday.

This year was particularly poignant for some, with 2019 marking the 100-year anniversary of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike, one of the largest strikes in Canadian history.

While the strike was technically unsuccessful, it won a greater prize — it united Canadian workers, and we still remember it today as an example of the power of many.

When we are faced with labour conflict today — the currently-underway struggles of the Amalgamated Transit Union, for example — we benefit from looking back at our history and letting it influence our future.

Remember — there can be power in a union.

“Flour jumped in price overnight. Bacon did the same. So did butter and eggs. So did shoes, and clothing, and beef, and coal etc. The only salvation of the worker was to ask more wages and when this was denied his only way of enforcing a higher wage was through organization.” (Western Labour News, May 21, 1919)
