F

ishing line, toaster element and measuring tape: three commonly found items, yet invaluable to a student-driven team whose resourcefulness can turn these items into parts of a functioning satellite-deploying system.

Five days before the U of M Space Applications and Technology Society (UMSATS) team was to head to Ottawa for the Canadian Satellite

“One major challenge for all satellites [regardless of size] is making sure that your deployable systems are as close to 100 per cent reliable as pos-

sible,” said Driedger, a PhD student.

“Because you can’t send somebody up there to give it a poke — to make the deployment work. So, the satellite has to be reliable. It has to be able to deploy without any worry when it gets into space.”

The deployable antenna system the team devised is held under tension by ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene plastic line, commercially sold as fishing line.

UMSATS ensured its satellite would be able to deploy its antenna using the same principle as in a toaster.

When the digital command is given, a nichrome wire — a conductive alloy used in toasters and other heating elements — heats up and severs the fishing line by melting it. The antenna instantly unwinds and snaps into an erect position while the solar panels swing open like a pair of wings.

From June 25 to 28, UMSATS was at the Canadian Space Agency’s David Florida Laboratory, where its tiny, cube-shaped satellite was put through testing activities including a vigorous vibration test that simulates a launch into space.

As the city of Winnipeg and the province continue to scrap over transit funding, U of M students find themselves in the crossfire.

Earlier this month, the city issued the province a demand letter threatening legal action if it failed to provide nearly $9 million for the Southwest Transitway, a more than $460 million project scheduled to be completed in 2020.

The Southwest Transitway is a roadway specifically for buses and separated from regular roads.

The first stage, completed in April 2012, runs from Queen Elizabeth

Way and Stradbrook to Pembina and Jubilee.

The second stage, currently under construction, will extend this from downtown to southwest Winnipeg, including the U of M. The $8.7 million allegedly being held is earmarked to widen Pembina Highway at the Jubilee underpass and to construct a transit corridor.

Bowman first said the province was looking to renegotiate funding in February after the initial estimated cost was reduced from $587 million.

The city and province had agreed to pay $225 million each, with the

federal government covering the remainder. The cost was reduced to $467 million in 2016.

A provincial spokesperson told media in February the provincial effort to amend the deal reflects the change in cost.

At an executive policy committee meeting this month, Bowman said he expected the agreement to be honoured, “especially given the fact we're currently building the second phase of rapid transit.”

Despite being in its second phase, there are signs that the transitway’s future is less than clear. Mayoral can-

didate Jenny Motkaluk recently said her platform may include scrapping whatever remains on the transitway project, including the stop at the U of M. Southwest Transitway issues affect U of M students who use transit in their daily commute, especially since the introduction of the U-Pass, which provides unlimited transit services to full-time U of M students for a mandatory fee of $134.10 per term.

Julia Minarik, a first-year master’s student at the U of M, uses Winnipeg transit to commute to and from campus, and said more access to transit

“We believe strongly in the value of the [U-Pass] to make transportation more affordable and promote environmental sustainability,” he said.

“But it is unfair for students to have to pay for a service they cannot use due to poor bus service.”

Minarik said rapid transit will be beneficial to many Winnipeggers.

“Buses are so important for a city, especially for people like students who can’t afford other means of transport or are too scared to bike because there are no bike lanes or it’s winter half the time,” she said.

“So, in short, yeah, absolutely it’s a positive thing.”

D

espite promises to the contrary, Canada remains opposed to fundamental Aboriginal rights and continues to devalue Indigenous lives.

This is manifest in one of the most egregious case studies of contemporary colonialism in Canada.

Grassy Narrows First Nation is home to over 950 Ojibwa people. It has also been the site of a fierce struggle for Aboriginal rights. Currently, the First Nation is continuing a defiant 16-year blockade against logging on their territory.

In 2014 the Supreme Court of Canada ruled the blockade violated both Treaty 3, to which Grassy Narrows First Nation belongs, and the Canadian Constitution. The court unanimously asserted Ontario has the right to dictate the fate of resources within the traditional

territory.

Canada’s limited view of Aboriginal rights is they emanate from various treaties and court rulings. Within this framework, Aboriginal rights are conjured and legitimized by the state. Moreover, these rights are not uniform since contested Aboriginal rights must be proven in court and existing rights can legally be infringed upon, so long as the guidelines of the 1997 Supreme Court case Delgamuukw are followed.

However, Canadian imperialism can still be undermined through Canadian law. But a radically different view of Aboriginal rights must be employed. This argument is made

here were two moments at the Winnipeg Folk Festival this year that seemed to encapsulate the prevailing mood of the weekend.

One was when the band Darlingside walked onto Main Stage, and related to the thousands of people in the audience how incredibly grateful theya were to be welcomed and embraced in a country that wasn’t their own.

The second was when soul and gospel duo the War and Treaty took a break from their set to remind everyone listening what their music stands for: It stands for love. Not just love for those close to you, but for the world — an all-encompassing love.

Politics and music have always been intertwined, from the civil rights anthems of the '50s, '60s and '70s to modern day. This year’s Folk Fest, under the hot Manitoba sun, was no different.

While the complicated political

climate of today sat uneasy in the back of everyone’s mind, over 73,000 people came together to sit and enjoy the music. They sat and listened to the stories and themes that the artists weaved into their songs.

Over 2,800 people volunteered their time to make this event happen, working together to create an environment that was steeped in, if not entirely permeated by, the concept of love. Love for each other, for the environment and for the artists and the art that they create. That is what Folk Fest is, what it has always been and what it will hopefully continue to be.

While society seems more and more divided every day, music can always provide a release. It won’t erase the unhappiness of the world, but when you’re sitting in a grassy field, under a sunset, with thousands of people all singing the same song, it’s hard not to believe in change.

he world mourns Anthony Bourdain, an executive chef, writer and television personality who took his own life last month. In one of his episodes of Parts Unknown, Bourdain admitted that he was suffering from depression.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) states that suicide is one of the leading causes of death for both women and men from adolescence to middle age. According to the CMHA, mental illness affects people of all ages, levels of education, income brackets and cultures.

Setting the stage for the next generation

ach musician’s path to success is different. For some, like Winnipeg Folk Festival (WFF) performer Skylar Bouchard, that path starts in the Stingray Young Performers (SYP) program. “[I] was elated when they chose me to be a part of the program as I've been going to the festival for close to a decade,” said Bouchard.

Now in its 18th ear, the SYP program has been a launching point for many budding musicians, including Roger Roger and Micah Erenberg, who are on this year’s WFF lineup.

“Every mentor had such different lessons to teach,” said Erenberg, who played in the program for four years.

“Afie Jurvanen [of Bahamas] told me to buy an old tiny tube amp when I was 16 and it's still my main amp.”

Of the hundreds of applicants that apply each year, only 32 were chosen for this year’s program. Those musicians then work with mentors through workshops to develop skills and practice songs. Mentors this year included Harrow Fair, the LYNNeS and Fortunate Ones.

The mentoring sessions took

place at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg. The young musicians are separated into groups and meet with their respective mentors.

For first-timers in the program, it can be a lot to take in.

Despite different styles and sounds, one connection between each SYP program participant is their love for the festival.

“There's something about being in such a loving, uninhibited environment paired with the ability to see some of the world’s best performers that really inspires the creative process,” said Bouchard.

“It brings people together through the universal language of music,” said Lunny.

“I always look forward to wandering around the grounds and meeting new people.”

he annual Winnipeg Folk Fest (WFF) celebrated its 45th year with over 70 bands gracing the nine stages nestled in Birds Hill Provincial Park.

Jam-packed lineups had musicians playing daytime stages starting at 11 a.m. until the Main and Big Blue stages kicked off evening programs that continued into the night.

Elle King, Sheryl Crow and Courtney Barnett led a growing shift in WFF’s gender parity programming, with near eaqual numbers of women and men performing this year.

Thursday night saw local folk duo Roger Roger kick off the festival. Aussie rocker John Butler Trio+ and pop singer Elle King headlined a tuneful first night of music at the main stage.

The Big Bluestem stage’s program opened, Friday evening, with performances from Boniface, Real Estate and Rhye.

Festivalgoers had to make tough choices that night as the main stage saw another busy night, with the

Strumbellas and Courtney Barnett headlining the evening.

The hottest day of the festival, Saturday, saw some equally hot acts grace the stages. Artists such as Bahamas and Donovan Woods may have brought in a diverse crowd, but the 33 C heat also played a factor in the lower attendance compared to other days.

“I’m thoroughly impressed by anyone who managed to get to the festival or their volunteer shifts that day,” said WFF attendee Afton Stewart.

“I didn’t even leave my campsite it was so hot.”

Structurally, there were still some issues with the WFF — the bathroom and water lines were often long and overcrowding at the main stage was an issue.

“I was very disappointed that there was often a lack of toilet paper in the porta-potties in the campground as well as massive lines for the bathrooms in the actual festival,” said Natalie Angèle, another festival attendee.

As the temperature dropped at dusk, things sizzled at Big Bluestem during Five Alarm Funk’s packed set.

“You could feel the buzz in the air and everyone had so much excitement on their faces,” said Jodi.

“Despite the heat, everyone managed to throw down the best dance moves, crowd surfing and all.”

Too Many Zooz closed out the evening on Big Bluestem, while the main stage saw some relaxing sets from Whitney and Bahamas, before closing out with Indigenous electronic powerhouse A Tribe Called Red, which featured hoop dancers who performed to the fusion of traditional powwow drums and vocals

with hip hop influences.

Workshops, a themed set of musicians consecutively playing on one stage throughout the weekend, allowed for festivalgoers to experience more than one artist per concert.

Some of the themed concerts featured headlining artists stripped down to a pure and simple acoustic song as they passed the microphone along the line of performers.

Whitney participated in two workshops as an acoustic duo, crooning the typically punchy breakup song “Golden Days” in a haunting melancholic falsetto. The tune was returned to its original full-band poppy state for their main stage show but this workshop and many others presented the opportunity to hear performers experimenting with their sound and styles.

The main stage was the domain of the headlining bands, but the dancing area was quite peculiar as it was off in the right quarter of the stage and audiences agreed it was not the best setup for people that wanted to stand and enjoy the music.

“It's cramped, people are talking and yelling and the sound isn't as good as in the middle,” said Jodi.

“We're the folks who are willing to party and the ones that the bands want to see out front.”

However, when nine-time Grammy-Award-winner Sheryl Crow hit the stage on Sunday night she had a majority of the crowd on their feet, belting out classic after classic from “All I Wanna Do” to “If It Makes You Happy.”

Attendees soaked up the sun with Sheryl Crow while being treated to yet another excellent year of music presented by WFF.

t’s not every day you open up a festival you’ve been attending your entire life.

For local folk sibling duo Roger Roger, that dream became a reality at the Winnipeg Folk Festival (WFF).

Like many local musicians vying for a spot on the main stage lineup, Lucas and Madeleine Roger started playing on the Shady Grove stage as part of the Stingray Young Performers (SYP) program.

“It was really surreal to be facing the other direction this time,” said Madeleine Roger.

With a little help from their friends and family, Lucas and Madeleine Roger have developed a sound that has brought them from their father’s recording studio to the main stage at the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

Our Scene the Movie brings hip hop to the forefront BRAIDEN PERGIS, STAFF

he upcoming documentary Our Scene the Movie steps up the relationship between film and dance.

Quan Luong, the editor and cinematographer of the film, captures dancers’ realities and what it means to be a part of the hip hop dance scene in Winnipeg.

“The film is about the general dance scene and the hip hop dance scene in Winnipeg from its beginning in the 1980s till now with thousands of people attending each [dance] event,” said Luong.

Luong said he wants the audience to understand the hard work it took for earlier dancers to build a strong reputation for hip hop dance, while also garnering attention for industry events and to grow support for dance

as a whole.

He said he aims to expose those uninvolved with the hip hop style to its dynamic and artistic culture, in hopes that it piques their interest and starts a new generation of dancers.

“I’ve always liked dancing and I’m a little bit of a dancer myself so when GeNie approached me with this project, it’s an easy answer for me,” said Luong.

“Dance has always been around my life. I started filming because of dance.”

The film encompasses several perspectives including more experienced dancers from both the choreographed and the freestyle hip hop scenes, in addition to those of dancers just starting out.

“The animosity between the two scenes is very different between the two," said Luong. "The freestyle considers themselves true hip hop while the choreography is followings someone’s dance moves, right?”

So they have that misunderstanding between the two.”

Luong goes on to say that this misunderstanding is manifested in not attending each other’s events, further widening the divide between the two sides.

“By showing my film it will make

them understand how they got to this point where everyone’s friends now — there’s no more beef between the two — because we showed how some of them started filming events where there’s a bit of both [scenes] at those events.”

He says that it does not matter where dancers are from: North End, South End or high schools — the dancers in Winnipeg come from all across the city.

“In general, I’ve learned that this city has quite a history for Winnipeg […] Everyone is very passionate and there’s a good story behind everyone,” said Luong.

He continued on to say that most of the dancers that he interviewed use dance as an outlet to express their feelings and creativity.

Our Scene the Movie will be shown at the WAG on Saturday, July 28.

The doors will be opened at 6:30 p.m. and the screening will begin at 7:15 p.m. A discussion panel will follow.

Luong reminisced about dance groups having dance battles in the parking lot of Garden City Shopping Centre, saying that he would love for the trend to return to that norm.

“It’s interesting to know that back in the 1990s everyone was breakdancing in the street,” said Luong.

olf season is in full-swing across the country and the U of M Bisons are hitting the links.

In the second event of the season, the Bisons men’s golf team secured a strong third-place finish, while the women’s golf team stumbled slightly.

Men charge to bronze

Entering the final round of the Canadian University/College Championship the herd was in a bad spot. Heading into the final day of the competition, the Bisons were in sixth place at six over par after scoring an 870 over the first three rounds.

Day one was the worst, with the herd going 10-over-par 288 on the course. The first five holes got Manitoba behind in a hurry with three bogeys and two double-bogeys.

On the back nine, things were not better as the team earned four bogeys and two triple-bogeys.

The team's saving grace came from three birdies on the front nine and a birdie and an eagle on the back nine that combined at six under par.

However, this was not enough to save Manitoba from finishing tied for 10th.

While the men’s golf team had a great run to a podium finish, the women had far less luck. The herd went 89 over par in the tournament and crashed out after the third round.

Like their male counterparts, the women fell flat out of the gate but, unlike the men’s team, they could not recover.

On day one the herd fell behind.

A birdie on the first hole looked promising but was followed by six double-bogeys, a triple-bogey and was capped off with a bogey to finish the front nine at 20 over par.

The back nine of round one was little better with the Bisons going 15 over par with four double-bogeys, two bogeys and one five over par hole.

The herd finished the day at 35 over par and landed firmly in 11th place.

Rounds two and three did little to

help the cause. In the second round the Bisons went 25 over par and then went 29 over par in the final round.

The Bisons finished round three with a total score of 737 and missed the cut to advance.

While the team did not advance to the final round of the championship, Veronica Vetesnik went it alone by posting a 225 over three days.

In the final round, Vetesnik started slow by going six over par on the front nine. Then she followed it up by going two under in the back nine to finish that day at four over.

Vetesnik finished the tournament at 13 over par and locked up sixth place as an individual.

The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds took home first place in the women’s competition at 19 over par. This was well clear of the second-place Victoria Vikes at 53 over par.

The Bisons will be back on the course in September for the Augsburg Fall Invitational. The two-day event begins Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Majestic Oak Golf Club in Ham Lake, Minnesota.

“It’ll be hard to fill the holes that our graduating players are leaving but I know that we have many leaders on our team,” she said. “But yeah I’m definitely hoping this experience will help me grow as a player and give me the tools to help with that.”
