Editor's Note Success. It’s a simple word that’s easy to define, yet it means something different to each person you ask. For some people success is power, while for others success might mean wealth. For me personally, success could simply be developing a skill, like learning that new Chinese recipe I always wanted to cook!

Despite meaning different things to different people, most people recognize success when they see it. “Wu Zetian: The Only Female Empress in Chinese History” is one such example, a fascinating article that covers one of China’s most famous rulers. She was the only Empress in Chinese history to hold the functional power of an Emperor, and skilled in her role.

When you look closely at nature, you’ll find stories of success everywhere you look. Have you ever wondered why grasslands don’t have trees? In the article “Why Do Prairies Not Have Trees” you’ll learn how various species of grasses work together to conquer the land, creating vast colonies that prohibit trees and other plant species from growing. WHAT’S IN CHINESE PEOPLE’S PHONES? As a modern country that embraces technology, Chinese people always carry a smartphone. Phones are used to buy food, products, services, and for entertainment. Yes, this means watching cat videos! The most common smartphone applications used in China are WeChat, Alipay, Taobao, Sina Weibo, and Douyin.

WeChat is a social media app that keeps you connected with friends, but has multiple other uses including news access and for general purchases as well.

While WeChat has a number of useful features, Alipay is an all-in-one payment app that can be used for everything from purchasing airline tickets to investing in stocks. For shoppers, Taobao is like one big shopping mall where consumer goods are bought and quickly delivered to your home. Sina Weibo is another social media app that is widely used, where users can share updates or photos to their followers.

And of course there is Douyin, which translates to “vibrato” in English.

Douyin is a very useful and entertaining app that allows people to share short videos covering a wide range of topics. The United States version of this app is called Tik Tok, and it has become one of the most popular and successful apps ever created. This innovative approach to social media is very fun for creators, and helps users engage with people from all around the world!

These are just some of the apps used in China, so ask your Chinese friends what their favorite app is and see what new apps you can discover!

Grass and trees seem to grow everywhere, but have you ever noticed that some grasslands seem to lack trees? These grasslands are called prairies, and they are recognized by their resistance to growing a significant number of trees. Why does this happen in nature?

There are a few reasons prairies do not have many trees. The first reason is that trees need lots of water in order to grow, and tightly-packed grass prevents water from reaching tree roots. There are also mineral deposits called “caliche” in the soil of grasslands, which makes it harder for trees to grow in the first place. Not many trees survive against such competition, and the ones that do are typically stunted in growth. This is just scratching the surface however, as there are many other reasons why you don’t see trees in prairies.

Wu Zetian: The Only Female Emperor in Chinese History

Intermediate level 5Mins Chinese history is filled with tales of Emperors, an elite ruling class dominated by men. In all of China’s history only one woman, named Wu Zetian, would hold such a title. Would you like to hear the story of Empress Wu Zetian?

As a young girl, Wu Zetian had a bubbly personality.

She liked to sing and dance, and had a beauty about her that others noticed. At the age of fourteen she was selected to join a harem. While this alarmed some people like her mother, Wu Zetian saw it as an opportunity to become powerful.

Sure enough, she eventually became one of Emperor Li Shimin’s wives. Her boldness and skill taming horses intimidated the Emperor, meaning that Wu Zetian was not one of the Emperor’s favorites. The Emperor’s son, on the other hand, found Wu Zetian much more appealing. When Li Shimin died and his son Li Zhi became Emperor, he would marry Wu Zetian and she would once again find herself in a position of power.

As fate would have it, Li Zhi would also become sick and died as a result. In the moment the title of Emperor was passed to Wu Zetian’s son, but she would remove his title and she became Emperor herself. While other Emperor’s wives had previously held the title of Empress, only Wu Zetian would be called Empress while bearing the functional responsibility of an Emperor. HOW TO MAKE BLACK SAN CHOP?

Before World War II started, World War I was known as “The Great War.” The tactics used in this war were unconventional and exceptionally cruel, which includes the usage of weapons like poison gas. British and French troops experienced the effects of poison gas firsthand when they faced German troops in Belgium during World War I. It was a battle that lasted for over six months, despite the belief that poison gas could end the conflict quickly. These types of weapons killed many people, and many animals as well.

Although poison gas attacks were extremely deadly, there were some animals that would survive. Scientists who were preparing countermeasures for these weapons discovered that pigs could adapt to these toxic fumes by changing their behavior. When pigs smelled the approaching clouds of poison, they buried their noses into the soil. This adaptation effectively filtered the chemical gasses, which helped pigs survive during these battles.

After some experimentation, scientists invented a gas mask that effectively filtered out toxins in the air. The design was based on the anatomy of a pig’s nose, except instead of relying on mud as a filter these gas masks used activated carbon. This is not the only time scientists have used nature as a blueprint to create new innovations or inventions, but it’s a fascinating example of this occurrence.
