As Westchester County’s network of Mobile Crisis Response Teams (MCRT) continues to build and serve communities throughout the County, they, and teams around the state, will soon have a new tool to help them arrive at behavioral health emergencies faster and more safely. New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has signed into law legislation, sponsored by State Senator Pete Harckham and initiated in Westchester County, that will allow Mobile Crisis Response Teams across the state to display flashing green emergency lights in their vehicles when responding to a call. As part of Westchester County Executive George Latimer’s “Project Alliance,” Westchester County deploys MCRTs throughout the County, connected to law enforcement and a “Crisis Network” phone line that serves to divert people in behavioral health crisis to the de-escalation and services they need. At the outset, planning for these teams included a stepby-step analysis of needs and design, with the ability to arrive quickly and safely to those in crisis. The Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health (DCMH), in an effort led by Deputy Commissioner Joseph Glazer, worked closely with Harckham and his staff to draft legislation that would allow MCRT members to use flashing

green emergency lights on their vehicles. Unlike flashing red lights, which require drivers to yield the right of way to emergency vehicles displaying them, flashing green lights request drivers to yield the right of way so they can arrive at the scene more quickly and safely. Senator Harckham and his staff drafted the legislation, not just for Westchester but as a statewide bill, recognizing a growing desire to create MCRT teams across New York State. The bill (S.5397/A.5604) was sponsored in the Assembly by Transportation Committee Chair William Magnarelli (D-Syracuse). The lights will be deployed to teams as defined with certain service model criteria. The new law will become effective 180 days from the day it was signed by the Governor. Latimer said: “The goal of Project Alliance is really to help first responders across Westchester to be better prepared, and able to meet the needs of the communities we all serve. This measure, shepherded to adoption by our own Senator Harckham, and Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli, will serve to help us get to people in crisis faster and more safely.” Harckham said: “Allowing Mental Health Crisis teams professionals in transit to use green lights on vehicles will cer

United Hebrew welcomes new administrator Rita Mabli, president and CEO of United Hebrew in New Rochelle, announced the appointment of Mark Sanchez as the award-winning senior living community’s new Nursing Home Administrator. Sanchez brings a distinctive background, combining over a decade of extensive healthcare experience with a robust foundation in business and finance. Mabli expressed her enthusiasm for his appointment: “Mark’s non-traditional background brings a fresh perspective to our organization. His business acumen will be a huge asset as we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the senior care industry. We are confident that his leadership will enhance our already exceptional team.”

A ‘Homecoming’ to United Hebrew Sanchez’s journey in long-term care began at the age of 14 when his parents acquired Green Hills Estates, an assisted living facility in Rockland County. Growing up with a nurse educator mother and an attorney father, he was immersed in the world of senior care. His early experiences in the facility, witnessing his mother serve as the administrator, and develop-

tainly save lives. I thank Governor Hochul for signing this legislation into law and Assemblymember Magnarelli for his steadfast efforts in galvanizing support for expanded behavioral health initiatives like this, which signals to residents that ‘help is on the way.’ The Green Light law promises to enhance community wellness in many ways.” DCMH Michael Orth said: “Since the inception of this model, we have worked to reinforce that our Mobile Crisis Response Teams serve our community as true first responders. That means they are prepared to help when called, and arrive as quickly as safety allows. By adding

ing his own relationships with residents, ignited his passion for the field. After earning his MBA from the Asian Institute of Management in Manila, Philippines, Sanchez worked for several years in banking and finance while helping his mother on weekends at Green Hills Estates. Eventually, he realized he derived more fulfillment working in senior care and left banking to pursue a certification in Long-Term Care Administration. He completed his Administrator-in-Training internship at United Hebrew in 2012, working with Mabli. He stayed on as a weekend administrator until 2015, when he left to take on the role of administrator at Green Hills Estate Health Services Group, where he managed adult home, assisted living, and social adult daycare programs for the past seven years. On returning to United Hebrew, Sanchez says: “This is not just a job for me; it’s a homecoming. From spending my days as a teenager around my parents’ facility to beginning my senior care career as an intern at United Hebrew, this place holds a special significance for me. It’s a huge honor to join an organization with an impeccable reputation and outstanding leadership team.” He described his vision for his new role as continuing to uphold the organization’s high standards, noting, “I’m here to listen and collaborate. United Hebrew is already a top-tier facility, and my goal is to finetune the operations for even greater efficiency. I believe in leveraging the expertise within the organization to make continuous improvements.” For her part, Mabli says United Hebrew looks forward to achieving new heights of excellence in nursing home care under Sanchez’s leadership. “His commitment to expert care and his dedication to the well-being of our residents align perfectly with our values.” Sanchez is an active member of the American College of Health Care Administrators, serving on the National Mentoring Committee and as the Secretary and Executive Board Member of the NY Chapter. He is a New York State licensed nursing home administrator.

the use of green emergency lights to the toolkits they have, they will be better able to meet the needs of the people of Westchester.” DCMH Deputy Commissioner Joseph Glazer said: “I am so appreciative of everyone who helped bring this idea to fruition. Senator Harckham and his staff, Assemblyman Magnarelli and his office, our colleagues at NYS Office of Mental Health (OMH) and the Governor’s office, and our own Westchester County intergovernmental team who all worked together to make this the law in New York State. Across Westchester and our entire state, access to these emergency lights will further enhance our ability to create seamless, efficient systems to address behavioral health crises.”

Winter holidays bring more heart attack deaths The joy of the winter holiday season is often marred for many as research shows that more people die from heart attacks during the last week of December than at any other time of the year. The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health for all, says being aware of this annual phenomenon and taking a few important, heart-healthy steps may save lives. “The holidays are a busy, often stressful, time for many of us. Routines are disrupted; we may tend to eat and drink more and exercise and relax less. We’re getting too little sleep and experiencing too much stress. We also may not be listening to our bodies or paying attention to warning signs, thinking a trip to the doctor can wait until after the new year,” said American Heart Association Chief Clinical Science Officer Dr. Mitchell S.V. Elkind. “While we don’t know exactly why there are more deadly heart attacks during this time of year, it’s important to be aware that all of these factors can be snowballing contributors to increasing the risk for a deadly cardiac event.” Scientific research finds an uptick in cardiac events during the winter holiday season. A study published in Circulation, the flagship journal of the American Heart Association, reported that more cardiac deaths occur on December 25 than on any other day of the year; the second largest number of cardiac deaths occurs on December 26, and the third largest number occurs on January 1. Winter weather has been noted as a trigger for

increased heart attack risk due to restricted blood flow though constricted vessels caused by cold temperatures. However, another study published in Circulation found that even in the mild climate of Los Angeles County, about a third more heart attack deaths occur in December and January than in June through September. These findings were supported by a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association by researchers in New Zealand, where the December holidays fall during that area’s summer season. “Research also shows that the biggest increases in these holiday heart attack deaths are among people who are not in a hospital. This highlights the importance of recognizing symptoms and seeking immediate medical care. Don’t ignore heart attack warning signs because you don’t want to spoil the holidays, the consequences could be much worse,” Elkind said. “It also calls attention to the need for increased awareness of knowing how to perform hands-only CPR. You could be out holiday shopping, enjoying an office party or spending time at a family gathering and witness someone having a heart attack and going into cardiac arrest. Starting CPR immediately and calling 9-1-1 could be the difference in life or death in those situations. Hands-only CPR is something nearly everyone can learn and do. Elkind notes that while it’s important to live heart-healthy all year long, there are a few tips you should gift yourself and your loved ones as we ap-

proach the holiday season: • Know symptoms and take action: Heart attack signs vary in men and women and it’s important to recognize them early and call 9-1-1 for help. The sooner medical treatment begins, the better the chances of survival and preventing heart damage. • Celebrate in moderation Eating healthfully during the holidays doesn’t have to mean depriving yourself, there are still ways to eat smart. Look for small, healthy changes and swaps The joy of the winter holiday season is often marred for many as research shows you can make so you continue to feel your best while eating and that more people die from heart attacks during the last week of December than at any other time of the year. drinking in moderation, and don’t forget to watch your salt intake. ways to stay active, even if it’s going for a family • Plan for peace on earth and goodwill towalk or another fun activity you can do with your ward yourself: Make time to take care of yourself loved ones. during the busy holiday. White Plains Hospital launches Structural Heart Program Graphic Designer | Design2pro

White Plains Hospital announced the launch of the Montefiore Structural Heart Program at White Plains Hospital with the successful completion of its first three minimally invasive heart valve replacement procedures, known as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements. Pictured are TAVR docs,.Dr. Rachel Spallone, Dr. Azeem Latib and Dr. Robert Michler.

White Plains Hospital announced the launch of the Montefiore Structural Heart Program at White Plains Hospital with the successful completion of its first three minimally invasive heart valve replacement procedures, known as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacements (TAVR). The procedures, performed by Dr. Azeem Latib, a leading expert in interventional cardiology and Director of the Montefiore Structural Heart Program at White Plains Hospital, was performed in one of the Hospital’s state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratories and marks a key milestone in the growth of the Hospital’s advanced cardiac services. More than five million Americans are diagnosed with heart valve disease each year, including 1.5 million with aortic stenosis – or the narrowing of the aortic valve. This condition often appears in those 65 and older and deteriorates with age. Older patients with aortic stenosis and other congenital heart diseases can often benefit from a TAVR. The procedure, which typically takes less than an hour, involves specially trained cardiac interventionalists, in collaboration with worldclass cardiac surgeons, using advanced imaging techniques to guide a flexible tube called a catheter through a small needle hole in the groin, up through the blood vessels, to the diseased aortic

valve. The team then uses the catheter to deploy a new valve, immediately restoring function and blood flow. Patients are cared for by highly trained cardiac intensivists in the Hospital’s Cardiac ICU, and many of our patients go home the next day. White Plains Hospital is one of just two healthcare facilities in Westchester offering this life-saving procedure to patients in Westchester County. Every patient is fully evaluated by a cardiac surgeon, interventional cardiologist, cardiologist and radiologist to determine the ideal course of treatment, whether that is a TAVR procedure or open-heart surgery. Also, with advanced imaging technology on-site, including high-resolution CT scanning, fusion imaging and cardiac MRI, patients can undergo convenient, same-day pre-operative testing at the Center for Advanced Medicine & Surgery (CAMS) in White Plains prior to the procedure. The addition of the Montefiore Structural Heart Program at White Plains Hospital builds on the success of the Montefiore Cardiac Surgery Program at White Plains Hospital, which has exceeded national benchmarks for quality with exceptional patient outcomes in the two years since its launch. The program was recently recognized with a distinguished 3-star rating, the highest available, from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons,

a designation that places it among the top 10% of programs for heart bypass surgery in the United States and Canada. White Plains Hospital’s cardiac care capabilities are further strengthened by its world-class Interventional Cardiology program and Cardiac Electrophysiology department, which is focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of arrythmias and other emergent cardiac issues. White Plains Hospital’s experts work closely with a network of cardiologists and specialists throughout the Hudson Valley to ensure each patient receives the specialized care they need, close to home. “This program underscores White Plains Hospital’s commitment to growing its advanced cardiac services for patients across the Hudson Valley,” said Dr. Latib. “These expanded capabilities allow us to provide the most appropriate treatment based on our patients’ needs, whether they require open-heart surgery or a minimally invasive procedure like a TAVR. We are excited to begin performing these procedures and look forward to continuing to advance the Structural Heart Program at White Plains Hospital. Eastchester Wins Award for Commitment to honored for commitment to Unified Sports Over the past three years, Eastchester’s commitment to providing athletic opportunities to all students—regardless of ability—has been a top priority for the school district. On Dec. 8, Eastchester was recognized for its work in that sphere and was recognized as Hudson Valley’s Unified School of the Year by Special Olympics New York. Representatives from the district were on hand to accept the award, which celebrates was bestowed upon the district for its excellence in three distinct areas; Unified Athletics, inclusive youth leadership, and whole-school engagement. Eastchester is one of roughly 40 school districts across Section 1 and 9 that participates in Unified Athletics—a program that allows athletes both with and without disabilities to compete alongside each other in a variety of sports. Currently, Eastchester offers Unified Basketball and Unified Bowling, Eastchester’s Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services Dr. Greg Stowell—one of the representatives on hand to receive the award on Friday—said that the community’s enthusiasm for Unified Sports is undeniable. Citing both high participation levels for the district’s offerings and record community turnout for events, Stowell believes that Eastchester’s commitment to the program is something that caught the eye of Special Olympics officials. “I think foundationally, there is a lot of energy around Unified Sports, both from our Unified athletes and from the athletes who work with them,” said Stowell. “In terms of promoting unified sports, Theour culmination of the basketball season last year saw our stands packed the stands with both parents and students; the energy in the gym felt like

a playoff game. “I think the energy, the inclusivity and the excitement that our student body and parents have for the program is what makes us unique.” The leadership aspect of the Unified Sports platform is another area in which Eastchester has set itself apart. Last February, a contingent of Eastchester students participated in an inclusive leadership seminar in Ossining, further highlighdemonstrating that a strong commitment to the ideals of the unified program isare near and dear to the hearts of local youngsters. Last month’s successful student-organized Polar Plunge event, which raised over 20,000 dollars for the Special Olympics and Eastchester SEP-

TA also served as evidence of the district’s commitment to the Unified cause. “The idea of leadership and being an advocate is something that is really special and our students are really excited about sharing that.,” said Eastchester Athletic Director Brad Gitlin. “It’s important that we are an inclusive community and I think it’s a priority that Eastchester strives towards. Our students are really excited about sharing that.” Gitlin and Stowell both noted that, although Eastchester’s current unified offerings are robust, there are still opportunities for the district to expand its services, eitherbe they through Unified/Adaptive Physical Education courses or increasing the number Unified teams fielded by the district. Those

strides will be aided by continued partnerships with groups like Eastchester SEPTA and other local organizations such as the Eastchester Sports Club and the Southeast Consortium. “I think, not only are we heading in the right direction, but I think we’re also leading folks in that direction because of the emphasis and importance we put on it, ” said Stowell. “As we continue to expand our Uunified physical education offerings, we’re always looking for more opportunities for our unified athletes. and I think that’s something Eastchester should be proud of.” Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_Sports

Lucian Weiss put Mamaroneck on the board towards the end of the first period, but talented Ithaca grabbed control after the first intermission and dominated the time of possession to put the Tigers on their heels. A number of local wrestling program hosted their annual holiday tournaments last weekend, including Eastchester and Mamaroneck, which both fared quite well in their signature December events. Mamaroneck had a total of six wrestlers qualify for the podium, led by a first-place finish from Tatsu Homma. Homma took the 108-pound bracket defeating Hauppauge’s Ryder Smith with a 13-6 decision in the finals. Overall, the Tigers entered three teams into the 16-team tournament, with
