Cuomo increases spectator capacity

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on April 26 that spectator capacity at large-scale outdoor event venues, including professional and collegiate sports and live performing arts and entertainment, will increase from 20 to 33% beginning May 19. This increase will coincide with the previously announced increase in large-scale indoor event venue capacity. Social distancing, masks, health screenings and all other state health and safety protocols remain in effect. Cuomo also announced that capacities would be increased throughout several industries that have proven to safely reopen in accordance with the state’s COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, starting May 15: • Gyms and fitness centers outside of New York City will increase from 33% to 50% capacity.
Spring Hudson Valley Restaurant Week has been moved to May 10-23 to allow patrons to enjoy dining outdoors. More than 100 restaurants throughout the Hudson Valley will be celebrating the return to restaurant dining with delicious 3-course, prix-fixe lunches and dinners. For more, see page 6.

Arab American board continues efforts to curb COVID Since the COVID-19 crisis, the Arab American Advisory Board has met virtually every month, remaining vigilant to support community efforts to help curb the spread of the virus. Currently, the group has helped more than 50 local Arab-Americans in Yonkers help navigate the online appointment system for the COVID-19 vaccine. There are currently six board members and together they have handed out masks and hand sanitizers to local schools and community centers. The group has also volunteered to deliver groceries and meals to families during quarantine. “With the creation of these advisory boards, we are able to reach every inch of the County, and learn about what their needs are,” County Executive George Latimer said. “The Arab American Advisory Board has served
as an ally to the community in helping to combat this virus and encourage those who may be hesitant to get vaccinated.” The Westchester County Arab American Advisory Board was created in 2019 in the spirit of inclusion to provide advice and be consulted on issues that affect the quality of life for Arab-Americans in the community. The Arab American Advisory Board is still seeking new members, with a limit of 21 people. Each member is appointed by the county executive and will serve two-year terms. According to the census, 5% of Westchester County’s population is made up of Arab-Americans, with many of our neighbors calling Yonkers and Scarsdale home. Martha Lopez, the county’s Director of Minority Women’s Business Program and Immigrant
Affairs, serves as a liaison to the board on behalf of the county executive. “The Arab-American community has also been dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, and through this Board, I can assist them in developing strategies to meet any concerns they may have and help get the word out about the importance of getting vaccinated,” Lopez said. Resources including satellite or pop-up vaccine clinics in underserved neighborhoods to ensure fair and equitable distribution of the vaccination. “I’m happy to encourage everyone to get vaccinated for safety and protection to our families and communities,” said board member Nihad Bsharat. And board member Hanade Sarar added, “We want to be contributors to our Westchester community, to enlighten people about
the Arab American cultures, rich art and history.” With the Holy Month of Ramadan underway, mosques in both Northern Westchester and in Yonkers have reopened with limited capacity. Worshippers will have their temperatures taken at the door, masks are required at all times, social distancing is marked by tape in some buildings and hand sanitizing stations have been installed. “This Board is important because it reflects a genuine interest of the County Executive in a growing Arab community and its needs,” said Ali Chettih, the newest member of the advisory board. The next meeting of the Arab American Advisory Board will be scheduled sometime after the Holy Month of Ramadan. (Submitted)

This is all great news, but we are not out of the woods yet. Washing hands, wearing masks and staying socially distanced are critical tools each of us can use to slow the spread as we continue our efforts to defeat COVID once and for all.” On April 26, Cuomo also updated New Yorkers on the state’s vaccination program. 115,854 doses had been administered across the state’s vast distribution
network in the last 24 hours, and more than 1.1 million doses had been administered over the past seven days. “We know the vaccine is the weapon that will win the war against COVID, but it will only work if we all take it,” Cuomo said. “We are seeing real progress in our vaccination rates across the entire state—about 45 percent of New Yorkers have received at least one shot—and our infection rates are declining every day. I encourage all New Yorkers to sign up for a vaccine appointment as soon as possible, because we can’t defeat COVID unless we all do our part and work together.” New Yorkers can schedule an appointment at a state-run mass vaccination site on the Am I Eligible App or by calling 1-833-NYS-4-VAX. Virtual forum to offer latest in dementia research People interested in learning about the latest in Alzheimer’s and dementia research will want to clear their schedules from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, to attend the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter’s Virtual Research Forum. The free event will feature presentations by three prominent researchers, including Dr. Rebecca Edelmayer, director of scientific engagement for the Alzheimer’s Association; Dr. Miguel Arce Rentería, associate research scientist at Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging
Brain and the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center; and Dr. Yunglin Gazes, assistant professor in the Cognitive Neuroscience Division in the Neurology Department at Columbia University Medical Center. Gazes will also be presented with the Margaret M. Cahn Research award for her work utilizing neuroimaging techniques to understand the mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The Margaret M. Cahn Research Award is presented to
an outstanding Alzheimer’s researcher in the Hudson Valley Chapter’s territory. It is named after Margaret M. “Peg” Cahn, a longtime supporter of the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter. “We are very excited about this year’s Research Forum,” said Stacey Rosenbluth, care consultant and director of family education for the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter, as well as one of the event organizers. “Rebecca Edelmayer from the Alzheimer’s Association will be doing a broad stroke over-
view that may cover blood tests, early-life markers, brain/ COVID-19 and vaccines.” Rosenbluth said Rentería’s presentation on bilingualism and literacy in relation to dementia/ cognitive aging will be both interesting and timely, as the Alzheimer’s Association is focused on increasing its understanding of how underserved populations are affected by dementia. “We are very excited to hear from our Margaret M. Cahn awardee, who will be speaking on neuroimaging techniques to understand underlying determinants of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias,” Rosenbluth said. “All three panelists come with a wealth of knowledge, and
we are especially looking forward to the Q&A section.” Also speaking at the event will be U.S. Rep. Mondaire Jones, of New York’s 17th Congressional district, which includes most of central and northwestern Westchester County and all of Rockland County. After the Q&A, there will be a 30-minute lunch break from 12:30-1 p.m., followed by an educational program on COVID-19 and Caregiving. WJCS awarded grant for College Wellness Initiative
Westchester Jewish Community Services has received a grant from Westchester Community Foundation for its College Wellness Initiative. This grant will allow WJCS to continue to deliver critical mental health services to Westchester County’s college students.
Westchester Jewish Community Services, WJCS, has received a grant from Westchester Community Foundation, WCF, for its College Wellness Initiative. This grant will allow WJCS to continue to deliver critical mental health services to Westchester County’s college students. WJCS and the Westchester County Department of Community of Mental Health, DCMH, created the College Wellness Initiative in 2020 to address the growing mental health needs of college students in Westchester County. The program was initially funded with Cares Act funding. The new funding from WCF will allow the program to continue to support college students beyond the initial pilot phase. The College Initiative supports Westchester County colleges and college students who, due to the ongoing pandemic, have experienced an increased need for mental health and substance use treatment. The mental health impact of COVID has
been most apparent in adolescents and young adults, with college-age individuals experiencing the most negative mental health impacts of the COVID crisis compared to the population as a whole. Compounding these challenges is the fact that the mental health benefits of an estimated 77% of college students are covered by commercial insurance plans, yet those with commercial insurance often face challenges in accessing mental health treatment due to the limited availability of mental health providers accepting private insurance. With WCF funding WJCS will be able to provide mental health services to Westchester County’s college students, irrespective of whether students have commercial insurance, whether WJCS is in-network with students’ commercial insurance, or whether students have any health insurance at all. Dr. W. Andrew Mullane, Director of Innovation, Integration, and Community Partnership at WJCS and co-chair of DCMH’s College Collaborative, is leader
of the college initiative. “I want to thank Westchester Community Foundation for their support,”Mullane said. “Many college students are continuing to struggle with uncertainty, fear, and isolation as they continue to experience the ongoing immediate and residual impacts of COVID to their lives. Many continue to learn remotely and are experiencing loneliness as a result of being separated from their peers, their professors, and the college experiences that are so important in shaping their identity at a critical time in their lives. Mamaroneck brings solar energy to residents As a leader in climate action, and to further its goals of creating a healthy, vibrant community, the town of Mamaroneck in partnership with nonprofit Sustainable Westchester announces the construction of a Community Solar installation on the roof of its Hommocks Park Ice Rink. The project will put significant emphasis on bringing the benefits of solar to lower-to-moderate income residents. In a first for Westchester County, the town is ensuring that benefits of solar energy are provided first to residents of its Housing Authority, Washingtonville Housing Alliance and
Section 8 Program. The town’s goal is to have at least 50% of subscribers from among those residents. “This project is a great example of creative sustainability efforts resulting in solar energy savings for residents who couldn’t otherwise have solar panels,” Town Supervisor Nancy Seligson said. “The Town earns rent revenue from leasing the Ice Rink roof, and the solar developer receives tax benefits as well. Hampshire Country Club in Mamaroneck was among the honorees recognized by the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle during its annual fundraiser event held virtually on April 23. The Boys & Girls Club highlighted and thanked Hampshire for its help during the hardest times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also recognized during the online ceremony were Noa Arias, Impact Supporter, Sylvia Fassler-Wallach, assistant superintendent for Business Operations for the Mamaroneck Union Free School District, Jackie Emmet, Impact Supporter and the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle Learning Center Staff. “The last thirteen months have certainly been a challenge. However, we have seen so many examples of our neighbors stepping up,” said Lutonya Russell-Humes, executive director, Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle. “Hampshire Country Club, Noa, Sylvia, Jackie, and our staff are the epitome of stepping up for their neighbors. There is no way that we could have served the children and families in New Rochelle, Mamaroneck and Larchmont over
this year without them.” Since its founding in 1944, Hampshire Country Club has not only built a reputation for being one of the top social clubs in the area, but it has also played an important role in helping out the Mamaroneck community during times of need. When the pandemic hit, Hampshire was particularly willing to team up with the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle to provide children of working parents, especially working teachers, with safe remote-learning facilities outside the home. Over the past year, teachers have been at a disadvantage when it came to making sure their own children attended virtual classes. While teachers are central to the remote learning process, they cannot both teach their virtual classes and stay home to monitor their own children’s classes at the same time. Collaborating with Sylvia Fassler-Wallach and the Mamaroneck Union Free School District, Hampshire co-owner Dan Pfeffer, General Manager Dave Smith and Assistant General Manager Dorothy Mourouzis stepped up and offered furnished space and WiFi on the country club grounds to host the Boys &
Girls Club program and its students, to make sure teachers did not have to choose between their students and their own children. While this program was organized in conjunction with the Mamaroneck school district, the program nonetheless served multiple school districts, as each student participated in classes from his or her own school, even those in out-of-state districts. “Hampshire is grateful to the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle for this heart-felt recognition,” Pfeffer said. “This education-focused program held at our club is a wonderful example of how members of our community and officials at our school district came together to help one another, particularly during these challenging times. The Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation has secured a new location for Slam Dunk Basketball Camp—House of Sports in Ardsley—as the Westchester County Center in White Plains continues to be used as a vaccination site.

House of Sports in Ardsley will host Slam Dunk Basketball Camp this summer. The first session will be held July 5-9 and the second will be held Aug. 16-20, both from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “We feel we can operate our youth sports, including basket-
ball, safely,” County Executive George Latimer said. “Kids have gone through a lot in the past year with remote learning and isolation, we look forward to welcoming them back to the courts this summer.” Slam Dunk Basketball Camp aims to increase knowledge of the game and develop skills while fostering enthusiasm. “Slam Dunk Basketball Camp is something we look forward to every year,” said Kathy O’Connor, commissioner of the Department of Parks, Recreation and
Conservation. “It’s a rewarding program, especially when we see our campers reach the varsity level and compete in the Section One tournament.” The camp is open to boys and girls entering grades 3-9 in September. Parents are encouraged to register their children early as spaces are limited. Tuition is $350 per camper, per session. Park passes are now full color, feature the Parks’ logo, and include a traditional credit card-sized pass as well as a smaller card that can be attached to a key chain. Both cards include a barcode, which identifies the user. While there is no photo on the card, the user’s photo, account number and information will appear on screen when scanned at park entrances. Park passes can be purchased at the following

Even in the best of years, the end of a high school sports season is fraught with conflicting emotions. No matter how a season finishes up: either with a state title, a devastating playoff loss or a nondescript regular season contest, there is going to be a haze of feelings swirling around, and it can be a lot to process in the moment. Pride, grief and an instant sense of nostalgia all come into play for seniors every year. But this year, those emotions have seemed even more raw than usual. This past weekend, I was on hand to watch a number of teams close out their Fall 2 seasons—campaigns for high-risk sports that were barred from participating this past autumn as the coronavirus pandemic raged. And watching our senior student-athletes take their last
snaps on the gridiron or prepare for their last point on the volleyball court, I couldn’t help but notice another emotion at play—relief. While getting through any sports season this year has been something of a crapshoot, the student-athletes of the Fall 2 season were in a unique position. While COVID-19 has wreaked havoc with both the length and the start dates for every season this academic year, the football and volleyball players who suited up this spring were the first student-athletes to return to action after actually having their seasons canceled. Many watched as their classmates were able to ply their trade on the soccer pitch or the basketball court, not knowing if they would get the chance to compete this year at all. Mamaroneck junior Kaitlyn Welsh—whose Tigers won the Southern Westchester Regional volleyball championship on April 24—noted that they looked at the chance to play

this spring as an “extra” season; something they were determined not to take for granted. And it certainly showed. The celebrations from this weekend were moving. Rye’s senior players embracing on the field at Nugent Stadium after the final snap of the game, a rowdy Palmer gymnasium that was shaking like old Yankee Stadium, and Tuckahoe’s football players fighting through tears as they laughed uncontrollably after a 37-36 win; these were the sights and sounds of a grateful bunch of youths who have had their lives upended over the last 12 months. And I expect to see more of the same over the next few months. As the spring season kicks off this week, we’ll see the first group of athletes to be sidelined by this pandemic begin to take the field again. The baseball, lacrosse, rugby and softball players gearing up for this season have already seen last year’s seniors lose the opportunity to play ball. And I

By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor On Saturday afternoon, the Mamaroneck volleyball team put the finishing touches on an unprecedented season, topping Scarsdale 3-1 to win the Southern Westchester Region Section I title. The win marked the first sectional championship for the Tigers and served as a fitting end to the careers of a talented senior class. The matchup between league rivals started off at a blistering pace, with Mamaroneck edging the Raiders 30-28 in a back-andforth opening set that established the breakneck pace that would characterize the rest of the match. Junior Kaitlyn Welsh, who finished with 16 kills and 13 digs, said winning the first set was of the utmost importance on Saturday, given that the Raiders had beaten the Tigers in the last meeting between the two teams on April 9. “Considering we split with them during the year, we came into the game wanting to erase that loss against them,” Welsh said. “In that first set we proved that we could stand up to them and win this thing.” Mamaroneck took the second set as well before the scrappy Raiders won the third, forcing a fourth set. But Mamaroneck’s net play proved the difference-maker and senior Brynn Bizzard (22 kills) finally sealed the win with a perfectly placed shot that split the Raider players. “I saw it opened up in the middle, they were all in the back, so I just put it in the middle,” Bizzard
said. “I saw them all freeze, and I thought ‘that’s a win.’” Mamaroneck entered the postseason with a 13-2 record that earned them a No. 2 seed. But they became the de facto favorites after top-seeded Pelham was forced to withdraw from the postseason tournament due to a COVID-19-related quarantine. Welsh believes that having a target on their backs helped the Tigers bear down for the final championship push. “Honestly, on social media, people were writing comments saying they had to beat Mamaroneck now,” Welsh said. “We
fed off that hunger and I think that helped us.” Bizzard added that Pelham’s disqualification from postseason play helped to shine a light on the tenuous nature of the volleyball season. “It was scary knowing that we could lose it at any second; every game, every practice could be our last, so we gave it all we had,” she said. “Ever since we were freshmen or sophomores, we thought this was going to be the team, so we had been waiting for this moment for a long time.” CONTACT: sports@hometwn.com
