Westchester county gas tax to be capped As Westchester residents are increasingly facing difficult financial choices when it comes to their mode of transportation, Westchester County Executive George Latimer is introducing legislation to cap the county’s collection of sales tax on gas purchases to $.12 per gallon, equal to the cost of the tax with gas at $3 per gallon, and suspending fares on Bee-Line Buses. If approved, this proposed gas tax cap will run from June 1, 2022 to Nov. 30, 2022. Latimer›s directive on the county’s Bee-Line Bus fares does not require legislation. This suspension of fares will run during the summer until a later date. “Every single penny counts when making your family’s budget—and we want to encourage residents to travel our County and enjoy their summers,” Latimer said. “The capping of our gas
tax will help Westchester families stretch their budgets just a little bit further.” Understanding that the capping of the county’s sales tax collection on gas purchases does not impact all Westchester residents equally, Latimer is also directing the county’s Bee-Line Bus Service to suspend fares for riders. “Not every Westchester resident drives a car, and rising costs in everyday life are impacting all of us,” Latimer said. “This brief fare respite is aimed at helping all residents have a little extra cash in their pockets this summer.” The proposed legislation capping the collection of sales tax on gas purchases will now enter the county Board of Legislators committee process, with the suspension of bus fares only requiring county executive approval. way Association of Realtors reported a “record-breaking year in 2021,” with home prices up and inventory down as the demand for Westchester real estate soared. “We know families are pouring in, we know houses are flying off the market,” he said. “We know it because we see it on our block. The County’s population grew by 5.8 percent between 2010 and 2020, ahead of the Census Bureau’s own estimates.” Latimer stressed the importance cutting county property taxes again for Westchester’s homeowners—a $7 million cut in the 2022 budget, and a promise to strive for another cut in the future. Latimer closed
out 2021 with a $64 million operating surplus, all while maintaining Westchester County’s essential services. “We are launching new and innovative programs, but despite the rhetoric, we aren’t raising taxes to do it,” he said. “After four full years of smart, prudent fiscal management by my administration, Westchester County’s bond ratings now stand as ‘stable’ by all three major rating agencies.” Latimer applauded the brave men and women of the county departments of Public Safety and Probation, for helping to keep crime down and our residents safe in Westchester. Here in Westchester, crime is down,” Latimer said. “When the Westchester County Department of Public Safety compared January through September 2017 versus 2021, we see a decrease across the board. High school student new owner of Danbury gas station The owner of a new gas station in Danbury is a 17-year-old high school student with dreams of launching a service-station empire. Danny Eljamal of Harrison, began managing the Mobil station at 112 Newton Road on March 9 while finishing his senior year at Harrison High School, where he is the school president. He started early in his family’s business. “Every year since I was 14, I have spent the summers helping manage my brother’s gas station in Miami Beach all by myself. That’s how I got most of my experience,” said Eljamal, who will attend Fairfield University in the fall. Eljamal has begun refreshing the Mobil station’s exterior, including landscaping, new signage, and general cleaning. Inside the station’s convenience store, he introduced special offers, including 99 cents for any size coffee, two hot dogs for $3 and two 1-liter bottles of Poland Spring for $3. Eljamal’s station will sell American-produced gasoline and its pumps are secured with the latest payment protection technology. He chose the Mobil brand for his first station because it has the most name and quality recognition in the northeast.
Eljamal is the son of Sammy Eljamal, who for almost 30 years has operated Shell, BP, Mobil and Gulf service stations throughout
the tri-state area. Over the years, the family has supported many local causes. Last year the family donated $10,000 to the Maria
Fareri Children’s Hospital in Valhalla. The family will do the same in Danbury. “We are not just getting back to the community we are a part of the community, and this is part of our branding strategy and business
model,” he said. Balancing college homework, a gas station and a social life will be part of Eljamal’s preparation for running the corporation he hopes to build. “I’ve juggled work and school

Gilda’s Club Westchester will unveil its long-awaited Teen Center and newly renovated “Noogieland” children’s space on May 4 from 5-7 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony emceed by News 12’s Tara Rosenblum. With affordable housing developments opening in Port Chester, Yonkers, Rye Brook, Greenburgh and numerous other neighborhoods, and more than 4,400 in the pipeline since 2018, Latimer has proven that affordable housing is a top priority. Latimer said: “Our responsibility as a County government is to make sure that the opportunity for affordable housing is always there. Westchester County is home for everyone, and all are welcome here.” The State of the County address included a video series detailing Westchester County’s path forward, including a focus on crime reduction with the help of the County’s Public Safety and Probation Departments, a behindthe-scenes look at long-standing building and infrastructure projects like Memorial Field, and the completion of the Westchester County 9/11 First Responders Memorial. The speech also highlighted several initiatives the Latimer ad-
ministration has accomplished, including: • A 2021 budget that closed with no layoffs, no furloughs, no service cuts or borrowing for pension costs. • A recognition of the county’s Health Department for their continuous efforts throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, including hosting more than 200 pop-up vaccination clinics and conducting more than 400 thousand case investigations for COVID-19. • The continued success of the Office of Economic Development, including new and innovative programs to support job growth in Westchester. • A combined total of $50 million for affordable housing, the largest single-year commitment to affordable housing in the county’s history. • The creation of Project Alliance in partnership with the departments of Community Mental Health, Public Safety, Emergency Services and Social Services to address the needs of residents with behavior health challenges. • The revamping of a communi-
ty-based Public Engagement Program to support the Master Plan on Westchester County Airport. • The grand opening of the county’s new Veterans Service Agency office in White Plains • The electrification of Westchester County’s Bee-Line Bus fleet. • An ongoing celebration of all cultures and heritages throughout Westchester County. Latimer closed by reflecting on the many challenges the county has faced over the past few years, and commending the people of Westchester for their commitment to helping each other during a time of need. Latimer concluded: “We learned during the pandemic that no one person can care for all the sick, no one person can test all the worried, or vaccinate all the willing. No one person can teach the young, and no one person can restore our faith—no one person can do anything alone. But fear not, because we have each other. One Westchester. Bronxville footbridge replacement project underway Heeding the calls of residents’ eager to take advantage of the county’s award-winning parks system, County Executive George Latimer is pleased to announce the Bronxville footbridge pedestrian footbridge on the Bronx River Pathway located off Pondfield Road will be fully replaced. The footbridge was destroyed during the remnants of Hurricane Ida which passed through Westchester County late last year. “Living in Westchester means having easy access to miles and
miles of trails to walk and hike—it is part of what makes our County one of the best places to live nationwide,” Latimer said. “This footbridge was a part of a trail often used, and enjoyed, by countless outdoor enthusiasts. Working with our DPW/T and Parks, Recreation and Conservation Departments and Legislator Nolan, we look forward to its full restoration.” The bridge’s abutments, borings, and deck were washed away during last year’s flooding and will need complete replacement. This
parks infrastructure upgrade also comes at the behest of county Legislator James Nolan, who, like Latimer, heard from residents about the need to repair the footbridge. “When my office received numerous correspondence on this issue, I knew we had a partner in the County Executive who was just a phone call away,” Nolan said. “Use of the County’s extensive trail network is vital to the recreation residents enjoy and I am eager to see this project commence.” (Submitted)

After a year of spending more time at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many homeowners are looking for ways to make their homes fit their new realities. Open floor plans are out; dedicated spaces for remote work and learning are in. Yards are being transformed into entertainment spaces and walls are being repainted. At the same time, increased demand and safety concerns can make the remodeling process much longer than before. Here are five trends to watch for this 2021 home-remodeling season. 1. A focus on dedicated spaces At the start of 2020, “the most requested design concept was open space,” says Jimmy Dollman, principal of Dollman Construction in Roanoke, Virginia. “But now, we face a different set of design implications because everyone’s living conditions have changed.” Dollman notes that remote workers and learners need privacy and quiet. “A year ago, it was rare for one family member to work from home,” he says. “Now, [parents] and kids find it difficult to get work done be-
cause of the noise in the open design.” This year, expect to see homeowners spending less time knocking down walls to open up shared areas, and more time transforming spare rooms or nooks into dedicated spaces. That might mean adding a home office or home theater, for instance, or transforming a nook into a space for distance-learning. 2. Making room for offices To add home offices to residences, “homeowners aren’t adding square footage,” says Doug King, owner of King Contracting, a design-build firm in St. Petersburg, Florida, and president of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. “Rather, they’re taking out rarely used closets, like in the hallway, and moving interior walls to make space.” The home office trend isn’t going away anytime soon, he notes. “Even when the pandemic is over,” King says, “there’ll be a lot of people still working from home.” He notes that because of this trend, use of home technology is also increasing as households install items such as
ethernet cables for computer networks and Bluetooth speakers. 3. More outdoor living One cure for that cooped-up feeling is outdoor living areas. “People want their backyards to be their oasis,” King says. In his area, he says pools are the No. 1 thing being added to backyards. Outdoor kitchens and fire pits are the next most popular. Homeowners spending more time at home may also start to seek out remodeling projects that bring beautiful outdoor views inside — for instance, by installing larger windows or glass doors that let in more natural light. 4. Longer wait times Besides shifts in design trends, homeowners can expect a continued slow-down in the industry. In some cases, safety concerns have changed how contractors and workers approach projects. For example, Dollman has suspended all work in occupied residences to avoid exposure to COVID-19 “to protect the homeowners and our crews,” he says. Getting permits can also take much longer than usual as demand increases and those who approve the
permits adapt to new working conditions — for instance, working at home rather than in the office, or working with a limited staff. 5. Bold colors For homebound do-it-yourselfers looking for affordable ways to make rooms more welcoming this year, adding a colorful fresh coat of paint
will likely be high on their list. A sign that bold colors and color combinations could be gaining favor: They featured prominently among Color of the Year winners for 2021 announced by brands including Sherwin Williams, Pantone and Benjamin Moore. As a long-suffering fan of the New York Knicks, I often feel that the only reason to tune in to playoff basketball is to revel in the misfortune of others. Fully cognizant of my own team’s shortcomings, my enjoyment of basketball is entirely centered around schadenfreude, especially when it comes to the failings of “rival” teams in the Eastern Conference. And boy, did the Brooklyn Nets make this a season to remember. On Monday night, the “super-team” Brooklyn Nets were eliminated from the first round of the playoffs, putting an end to one of the most disappointing, bizarre, and compelling seasons a team has had in recent memory. For a team that came into the year as the odds-on favorite to win an NBA title—having three future Hall-of-Famers in their relative primes will do that— the 2021-22 campaign has been a disaster from the outset. But while the path the Nets took to a
sweep at the hands of the Celtics was a twisting, incomprehensible one, it was also an absolute joy to watch. It didn’t bode well for the Nets early on when point guard—and chaos agent—Kyrie Irving announced that he wouldn’t be getting a Covid-19 vaccine. This decision had an immediate impact on the outlook for the season, as Irving’s vaccine hesitancy—and New York City rules—meant he would not be able to play in home games. Regardless of your stance on vaccine mandates, I think any basketball fan can agree on one thing; if there was one player in the league who was most likely to find himself embroiled in a controversy like this, the smart money would’ve been on Irving. But even in Irving’s absence, one would assume the Nets had enough talent to stay afloat in a competitive Eastern Conference and turn things one in the playoffs. But then Kevin Durant got hurt—as Durant is wont to do— and the team’s third star, James Harden, decided he’d had enough of playing in Brooklyn, making his disinterest visible until he
played himself into a trade with Philadelphia. But that trade would backfire hilariously as the centerpiece of the deal—Ben Simmons—would never play a game for the Nets, his back and mental state keeping fans in the midst of a “will he or won’t he” guessing game that lasted until the very last game of the playoffs. Then final answer? He wouldn’t. So now, the Nets have wasted three years of the Durant-Irving experiment with no titles—and no finals appearances—to show for it. They’ve mortgaged the future for big name talent and gotten exactly bupkis in return. But do I feel bad for Nets fan? Far from it. It’s nice having a team—especially one so close by—that can make the Knicks look (relatively) functional by comparison. Sure, the Knicks stunk this year, and yes, they had their own issues with a disgruntled “superstar” in Julius Randle. But while the Knicks failed to meet their decidedly attainable goal of being a respectable basketball team, they look better in

By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor After an up-and-down start to the spring season, it appears that Mamaroneck may finally be turning a corner. On April 23, the Tigers outlasted a game Kingston squad from Section IX, edging their visitors 9-7 to get back over .500 with the second half of the campaign approaching. Against Kingston, the Tigers were led by tremendous offensive efforts from Clara Sosa and Shawn Rosenblatt, as each of the duo recorded a hat trick to pace the Mama-
roneck offense. Ally Jewell and the Tigers defense held tight, as Jewell posted four saves to protect a second half lead and improve Mamaroneck’s record to 5-4 on the year. “I told them after the game that this might not have been the most fun game, we didn’t play our best game, but a win is a win,” said Tiger coach Racquel Lividini. “Kingston shook us up a little bit offensively and made the game a little more difficult than it should have win, but it’s always a good confidence booster to get a win over a good team.” The confidence booster may have been especially important for a Mamaroneck team that—due to injuries—has yet to take the field with its full compliment of players. Fresh off a trip to the Section I finals last spring, the club came into the season with high aspirations. But with key players sidelined at various points throughout the first month and a half of the campaign, the Tigers are just starting to get healthy for a second-half push. To that end, Lividini believes that the team’s early struggles should only help to fuel the team’s push to another deep playoff run.

“It’s been a testament to our program in general, we’ve had low defenders playing midfielders, girls that midfielders playing on the attack, and it’s been tough to be able to get into the swing of things,” explained the head coach. “We’ve played a hard schedule, but we have some great seniors who just don’t give up and that will help us moving forward.” With a tough schedule to close out the regular season that features tilts against top Section I opponents like Bronxville and Horace Greeley, Lividini is hoping that her now-whole team can gel quickly as it sets its sights on the Class AA postseason. “We knew coming in to the season that we had a pretty stacked team offensively in terms of our stick skills and I’ve very excited to be able to see our offense get to that level,” she said. “We know every season is going to have its ups and downs but we’re just going to have to come out, play our hardest, and I think when everybody comes together, we’re going to be good.” CONTACT: sports@hometwn.com
