Westchester Land Trust Announces New Board Directors Westchester Land Trust, a nationally accredited land conservation nonprofit headquartered in Bedford Hills, announced two new appointments to its board of directors; Carine Verschueren, of Larchmont, and Matt Young, of Bedford Hills. Verschueren and Young will use their professional insights and personal passions to support WLT’s efforts to protect land, increase access to the outdoors, and strengthen local food systems. “Our leadership team is so pleased to welcome Carine and Matt to the Westchester Land Trust community,” said Bruce Churchill, chairman of WLT’s board. “Their support and valuable experience in education, policy, communications, and advertising will help us on our journey to expand our impact and connect with more people across
our service area.” Verschueren is a resident of Larchmont and adjunct professor in the international and comparative education program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her work focuses on the ways policy initiatives in public schools can foster a sense of environmentalism and sustainability with regards to responsible and equitable use of natural resources. Verschueren also trained as an environmental educator at the Sheldrake Environmental Center in Larchmont. She looks forward to working with the leadership team to ensure more vulnerable populations have access to green spaces and initiatives, as well as expanding environmental education for all ages. “I am excited to join a committed group of
people at WLT and hope to bolster their efforts through education and local advocacy efforts to influence policy-making and foster smart land conservation,” said Verschueren. “Facing climate change and loss of biodiversity, these efforts help offset greenhouse gas emissions and preserve wildlife habitats. They also hold the promise of clean air and water as well as a connection to nature especially for communities of color and economically disadvantaged communities.” Matt Young is a resident of Bedford Hills and chief revenue officer at Recurrent Ventures, Inc, a digital media company that includes Field & Stream, Futurism, Outdoor Life, and Popular Science. He has more than 20 years of experience working in the advertising, sports and
technology sectors. Young and his family are members of the Rusticus Garden Club and the Bedford Riding Lanes Association, and supporters of Endeavor Therapeutic Horsemanship and the Westmoreland Sanctuary. As part of Women’s History Month, the Westchester County Youth Board hosted the fourth Annual Shero Awards virtually on Tuesday, March 22. This year’s “Sheros” were executive director of the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau Debbie Burrell-Butler, executive director of the Youth Shelter Program of Westchester, Inc. Joanne Dunn, and coalition coordinator of the Ossining Communities that Care for Open Door Family Medical Center Alice Joselow. “Westchester County is fortunate to have no shortage of women who are seen as every day sheros in their communities,” said Westchester County Executive George Latimer. “This year’s honorees are noted for their tireless work in the areas of positive youth development, juvenile justice, and alcohol and substance abuse prevention. We thank them for serving as excellent resources and role models to the children, youth, and families that they serve.” Youth Board President Dr. Alexandria Connely added, “the 2022 Sheros are recognized as true collaborators and key influencers in their respective agencies and have ensured effectiveness within the programs that they oversee. The Board and Bureau appreciates their dedication particularly for their partnership with the Westchester County Youth Bureau, Board, and community at large.” About the 2022 Sheros: Burrell-Butler attended the Mount Vernon City Schools and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 2001. For the past 21 years, she has worked various roles within the city of Mount Vernon government until her appointment to her current role in August 2018. Today, she continues to drive changes within the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau and her community by providing youth and young adults ages 6-24 with a voice to advocate for them-

selves and others. She also continues to write and apply for grants that provide paid internships and work experiences for youth, which have led to careers within high-demanding fields. Dunn is a human service professional who has more than 15 years of experience creating and executing programs throughout the Westchester County. She is the first women to lead the Youth Shelter Program of Westchester, an alternative to incarceration program that serves young men between the ages of 16-21, awaiting disposition or who have been sentenced for various criminal convictions. She has served as a troop leader for the Westchester Putnam Girl Scouts, a member of the Peekskill City School District’s Parental/Community Involvement Committee, a parent coordinator for the Peekskill Pop Warner Football League and as an executive board member for the Peekskill NAACP. Her leadership philosophy is to lead by example. Dunn embraces the notion that an organization moves forward when its staff feels empowered and appreciated and provides her staff with many opportunities to learn and grow. Joselow is a community advocate. She has lived in Ossining for 24 years and currently works for the Open Door Family Medical Center where she coordinates and chairs a federally funded (SAMHSA Drug Free Communities grant) coalition called Ossining Communities That Care, which is focused on reducing teen substance abuse and the promotion of positive youth development in Ossining. Joselow has volunteered in the PTA where she organized many activities including storytelling festivals, afterschool programs, and assemblies and served as president for several years. Joselow was elected to the Ossining Board of Education in 1999 and served for 12 years on the board. (Submitted)

During Women’s History Month, Westchester County Executive George Latimer is highlighting the service and dedication of the professional women serving with the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services, DES. “Women in the Department of Emergency Services are dedicated, resourceful, experienced and capable,” Latimer said. “They have played a vital role in keeping our communities safe. We offer opportunities to strengthen our great County by providing opportunities for women to soar. We hope future generations can be inspired by these opportunities to serve their neighbors and choose emergency services as a career.” Westchester County Department of Emergency Services Commissioner Richard Wishnie said: “Diversity in the Department of Emergency Services is a major focus to assure that we have the most professional staff available to serve the public, particularly during an emergency event. The women of DES participate in critical roles from leadership, administration, fire, EMS, and communications. ed, professional women who serve at the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services, and how far they have come in non-traditional roles,” said Susan Spear, county DES deputy commissioner. “These women are an inspiration every day, protecting Westchester through 911 dispatch (60 Control), Fire service training, Emergency Medical Service (EMS), and Administration. We have more women serving at DES now than any other time in the Department’s history. And we are just getting started.” Westchester County Emergency Services is made up of five divisions: EMS, Fire, Communications/60 Control, Emergency Management and Administration. The women who work at DES serve in a variety of roles in the department, all designed to support public health and safety response functions throughout Westchester County. They are responsible for answering 911 calls, dispatching first responders, preparing for active shooter situations and coordinating training for firefighters and EMS. DES employees also help ensure safe and efficient vaccination clinics. “Diversity in the Department of Emergency Services is a major focus to assure that we have the most professional staff available to serve the public, particularly during an emergency event,” said Richard
Wishnie, county DES commissioner. “The women of DES participate in critical roles from leadership, administration, fire, EMS, and communications. I am extremely proud of all of the women who make a positive contribution to the Department of Emergency Services each and every day.” There are currently 16 women employed within different divisions of the department, with the most tenured employees serving just more than 25 years. The Chief of Training in the Fire Division plans, organizes and manages training programs for career and volunteer firefighters to ensure they meet safety standards and requirements, and prepare our firefighters to be the best they can be. The EMS Program Specialist helps ensure that EMS responders are well trained and credentialed, and plays a key role in managing safe vaccination sites. The 60 Control Supervisors and Dispatchers are the first line of response in many types of emergency situations, making sure the appropriate type of help is on the way and that responders clearly understand the situation they are responding to. The administrative staff make the entire operation run, from procuring necessary equipment and supplies, to managing Homeland Security grants, to supporting the Emergency Operations Center. On May 9, three high school students will experience the joy of live theatre in a whole new way—as playwrights. Noah Vienne and Lulu Tagger, both of Rye, and Hannah Ginste, of Riverside, Connecticut, were named winners of The Palace Theatre's 2022 Ernie DiMattia Emerging Young Artist Awards for their writing of an original one-act play. All three will witness their voices and visions come to life with a staged reading by professional actors at The Palace in Stamford, Connecticut. Ginste was awarded $500 for her play, “A Conversation Between Fallen Angels.” The Palace also recognized Lulu Tagger, a junior at Rye Neck High School, for “The Middle of the Beach” and Rye Neck High School junior Noah Vienne for his play, “A Life’s Work.” Tagger and Vienne both received $500 for their winning submissions. The Palace has brought in Luis Salgado, and Salgado Productions directors Florencia Cuenca, Marina Montesanti and Claudia Mulet to guest direct the staged readings, which will be attended by the playwrights’ parents, teachers and friends as well as Stamford Center for the Arts board members. “Congratulations to Hannah, Noah and Lulu for their excellent work,” said Michael Moran, president and CEO of The Palace. “Arts education is extremely important to The Palace. We are thrilled to welcome all of our directors and actors and are excited to see how they will bring the unique vision of each young playwright to life.” The Emerging Young Artist Award was established in 2010 and is open to all high school students from Fairfield and Westchester counties. Winners have included instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, actors and playwrights. In 2015, the award was renamed for Ernie DiMattia, former president of The Ferguson Library in Stamford and a longtime Stamford Center for the Arts board member. The Palace’s Arts in Education programs are year-round and strive to educate, challenge and inspire area youth by offering opportunities in performing, choreography, master classes and intensives in acting, voice, writing, music and dance. Students learn skills that are important in academic and life success such as confidence, problem solving, teamwork, perseverance and focus. As excited as I get for the beginning of each spring season, there’s one thing historically, that tempers my enthusiasm for the campaign to come—that wonderful northeast weather. Make no mistake, I’m no newcomer when it comes to playing sports in the area. From youth through high school to college and beyond, I’ve been at the mercy of our fickle meteorological system for decades. So why can’t I get used to it? At the start of every spring season, I—like our student athletes— simply can’t wait to get outside. Sure the winter is fun, filled with packed gyms and ice rinks, but the chance to get some fresh air and welcome in the warm weather is something we all look forward to. And I think that anticipation makes these last few weeks of March an especially frustrating time for all of us. This past week was a pretty good example of exactly what we’re dealing with. In successive days, I cov-
ered a softball scrimmage, boys lacrosse scrimmage and girls lacrosse opener; all games played within the lower-Westchester area. And yet, each of those games may have taken place on different continents. Tuesday’s game was played in shorts weather, while Wednesday’s saw spectators and players alike bundled up against the biting winter air. Thursday’s game somehow managed to up the ante with a constant stinging rain. On Saturday, I somehow got to experience that same array of weather phenomenon in the span of one half of lacrosse. How lucky we are to be outside again! Of course, this too shall pass; it does every year. In a few weeks, we’ll forget all about the unpredictable, uninviting weather of these early-season contests, settling into a (hopefully) warm and sunny stretch that makes playing—and covering—games a pleasure. But until that time, I reserve the right to complain. I’ll complain about having to pack cold and warm weather clothes when I’m heading out to cover sports for the afternoon. I’ll moan about those days where I
need a ski hat, wool gloves and umbrella. And yes, I’ll even grumble about never being exactly sure how ever-changing cloud covering is going to force me to monkey around with my camera settings between each inning of play. But as much as I might complain, I’m still thankful for the opportunity to do that. If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that anything approaching normalcy is a good thing. So forgive me if I might use this space to vent once in a while. I’m just glad I don’t have bigger things on my mind.

Game Notes: • Alex Martin scored 6 goals for the Tigers • Chris Matthews posted 12 saves • Mamaroneck outscored Sachem 8-2 in the 2nd half By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor Coming into the 2022 season with lofty postseason expectations, it’s no surprise that the Mamaroneck lacrosse team would seek out a slew accomplished non-league foes to round out its schedule. On Saturday, March 26, the Tigers opened the season with just such a test and performed with aplomb, riding a strong second half performance to top Long Island’s Sachem North 13-7. As the Tigers embark
on their season, this early-season encounter could portend big things for the large-school powerhouse this spring. It may have taken a while for Mamaroneck to find its rhythm on Saturday, as the Tigers and Flaming Arrows headed into halftime tied at 5-5. Once play resumed, however, the Tigers proved why they’re considered to be one of the most formidable teams in Section I, going on an 8-3 run to close out the game. Senior Alex Martin—who led the Tigers with six goals and one assist—that the team’s strong second half was mostly a function of finding an extra gear. “Once we started fighting, that was the difference,” said Martin. “Once we started fighting, we have so much chemistry, it all started to come together.” Martin wasn’t the only Mamaroneck player to light up the scoreboard on Saturday, as Rhett Chambers added four of his own. Goalie Chris Matthews made 12 saves on the afternoon, anchoring a solid defensive effort in the second half that gifted the Tigers with a number of good scoring chances in transition. According to Martin, that
up-tempo style may end up being a calling card for the Tigers this year. “We love to push it in transition, that’s one of our big strengths,” he said. “It’s something that we’ve been focusing on since our time in the LMYL (Larchmont Mamaroneck Youth Lacrosse) program, and we’ve just carried it over since.” The Tigers—who entered into the season as the No. 2 ranked team in Section I—will be back in action on March 30, after press time, when they travel to Briarcliff to take on a Bears team that earned their own decisive season-opening win over Scardale on Saturday afternoon. Last season, Scarsdale upset Mamaroneck for the Section I title, edging the Tigers 8-7 in a double-overtime championship showdown. For Martin and the returning Tigers, however, the key is keeping last June’s defeat in perspective. “We’ve talked about it, we’ve referenced it, but we’ve really just tried to put it behind us the best we could and just focus on this year,” Martin said. “We just have to get back to work in practice and work hard to get better each day.”
