LM Lions celebrate 100 years, present the Coughlin awards The LM Lions introduced their new motto “Better Together” as they celebrated their Centennial year and the annual Points of Light recognition of community service. The event, on Sunday, Jan. 28, was held at the Orienta Beach Club in Mamaroneck. Westchester County Executive George Latimer was the keynote speaker. The event was attended by many state and local civic leaders, International and local Lions leaders, and leaders of the many service groups being honored at the event. The centerpiece was the awarding of the Lions Jack Coughlin Community Service Awards to Kate Bialo and the Washingtonville Housing Alliance. The award, named in memory of long time Lion and founder of Coughlin Insurance, Jack Coughlin, recognizes a group and an individual for outstanding and dedicated service to the community. Much of Jack’s life was dedicated to community service.

The Lions also awarded the Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award to Sedona’s Bill Jablonski for his personal support of the Lions and Sedona’s “Dine Out For Charity” donations to many groups serving the needs of our community. The event recognized the many groups and individuals who today serve the community, including Alzheimer’s Association, At Home on the Sound, Cancer Support Team, Carver Center, Coalition for Community, Community Counseling Services, CRC, CURE, Friends of Karen Friends of the Family, Fuller Center, Furniture Sharehouse, Girl Scouts, Grassroots Grocery, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, KidsSight Vision Screenings, Junior League of Westchester, Larchmont Chamber of Commerce, Larchmont Mamaroneck Hunger Task Force, Larchmont Mamaroneck Summit, Larchmont Newcomers Club, Larchmont Rotary, Larchmont Women’s Club, LM Pollinator

Pathways, LMC Media, Local Schools, Mamaroneck Chamber of Commerce, Mamaroneck Elks, Neighbors for Refugees, Pediatric Cancer Foundation, PEO(Philanthropic Education Org), Salvation Army, Sharing Shelf, Sheldrake Environmental Center, STEM, VHP (Volunteer Health Program), Visions VCB, Washingtonville Housing Alliance. The Points of Light celebration of community service is the primary fundraiser for the Larchmont Mamaroneck Lions Foundation — the 501c3 financial resource at the center LM Lions support of many of these service groups. Of importance is that the Foundation grows donated funds as seed money, to attract matching grants & other partnerships — to deliver more support for local & Lions service. All donations are 100% tax deductible. The LM Lions would like to thank Diamond sponsor The Coughlin Group and all the other sponsors and donors for their support.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer proudly announced a significant achievement in economic empowerment, as the Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) Program has successfully awarded more than $250 million in contracts to registered minority and women-owned businesses over the past five years. Under Westchester County’s Office of Economic Development, the MWBE Program helps connect minority and women-owned businesses to county departments, contract opportunities and free workshops and training. Latimer said: “We are thrilled to announce that our MWBE Program has surpassed the $250 million mark in terms of economic impact. This achievement reflects our commitment to creating an inclusive and thriving economic landscape. As we celebrate this milestone, we remain steadfast in our dedication to supporting entrepreneurs and fostering a diverse community where everyone can reach their full potential.” Relaunched in 2018 as an extension of Westchester County’s commitment to creating a level playing field and helping everyone succeed, the MWBE Program and its goals were strategically reinvented with input from a Task Force Committee to foster the growth and sustainability of businesses led by historically underrepresented entrepreneurs. In 2023 alone, over 150 new MWBE businesses registered with the Westchester County MWBE Program. Westchester County Director of Operations Joan McDonald said: “Through strategic sup-

port, our MWBE program has become a catalyst for innovation and lasting positive change within our vibrant community. Reaching this milestone only reaffirms Westchester’s commitment to cultivating opportunities and diversity.” Westchester County Office of Economic Director Bridget Gibbons said: “This quarter-billion-dollar infusion has not only fueled economic growth but has also empowered diverse entrepreneurs, fostering innovation, resilience, and a more inclusive business landscape.” The Minority and Women-Owned Business Program is an excellent resource for minority- and women-owned businesses, which may be just starting out or have long been established in the local economy. The benefits of registering as a MWBE include having your business listed in the County’s online database and having high visibility to County departments, contractors and anyone interested in doing business with MWBEs. MWBEs also receive notification of contract opportunities and special invitations to workshops, seminars and trainings that are meant to help small businesses succeed. Director of Minority and Women Owned Business Development Martha Lopez said: “The most important thing is to continue letting those that would qualify as MWBEs know that these contracts and support are available. We know MWBEs are often underserved with limited resources. We want to encourage them and let them know the door to Westchester County is open.”

Mamaroneck resident creates kids journal Making art is not only enjoyable for children but significant in their emotional, cognitive and social development. “Draw and Discover: An Art-Making Journal for Kids” contains 60 carefully created prompts to help children become aware of their feelings, name them, express them and pay attention to the physical sensations that accompany them. Developed by an experienced art therapist, this journal uses art-making and drawing as a vehicle for children to learn about themselves and how they fit into the world.

The journal gives children a safe place to explore on their own and invites them to share their work with trusted adults in their lives. It also contains a section for adults that addresses the process of making art with children and best practices for how to respond when a child shares their art and tells their story. This sharing opens conversations and helps develop connections between adult and child. Structured enough to give children guidance and open-ended enough to give them freedom to explore and discover what emerges, the journal is perfect for children

who like to draw as well as those children who prefer not to write. Caren Sacks, is a licensed, board certified creative art therapist and board-certified art therapy supervisor who has been providing clinical services in a variety of settings for more than 40 years. In addition to a master’s degree in Art Therapy she completed a certificate in the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program at the New Hope Guild Center and was a Full Adjunct Professor in the Art Therapy Master’s Program at The College of New Rochelle. Caren lives in Mamaroneck with her husband and dog, Ziggy.

“The Westchester Women’s Summit dovetails perfectly with Women’s History Month, as it focuses on issues and opportunities that women care about, and the contributions women have made and continue to make in a variety of fields,” Ms. Cappa-Rotunno said. She adds that the idea is to learn from the experts and to help women feel empowered to create positive change in themselves and their communities. “It’s always an electric, happy event – a unique conference and a place for self-discovery and growth, where women can support each other in a judgement-free zone.” Cappa-Rotunno originated the first WWS in 2020, which featured former UN Ambassador Susan Rice; and broadcast journalist and author Gretchen Carlson. Since then, keynoters and speakers have included activist Tamika Mallory and actress Chita Rivera; New York State Attorney-General Letitia James; CNN correspondent April Ryan; and WCBS-TV anchor Dana Tyler, among others. The Westchester Women’s Summit normally attracts close to 500 attendees. Coming to terms with the Knicks You know me. When it comes to sports, I’m a pessimist at heart. So why then, after nearly 40 years of heartbreak and angst, am I starting to actually feel good about the New York Knicks? Make no mistake; as far as sports fans go, the Knicks faithful are a tortured bunch. With just two finals appearances in my lifetime— and no titles to show for it—we’ve had to get pretty liberal in terms of counting our successes. The twoweek run of Linsanity, a few years where the team wasn’t downright dreadful, in recent memory, that’s as far as we’ve gotten in terms of picking out positive memories about the team. But it seems the worm is starting to turn. Over the last few weeks—ever since the Knicks shipped RJ Barrett

and Immanuel Quickley off to Toronto for OG Anunoby, there’s been a different feeling around the team and as far as feelings go, it’s a strange one; optimism. Since the trade, New York has been winning—despite injuries to both Anunoby and Julius Randle— at a prodigious clip. With a win over Utah on Tuesday night, they clinched their first 14-win month in 20 years and find themselves as the No. 3 seed in an increasingly winnable-looking Eastern Conference. Am I absolutely psyched about this? Of course! Am I scared? You betcha! Obviously, this current streak is unsustainable. Even if OG comes back soon, Randle’s on a the shelf for a while, and knowing Knick coach Tom Thibodeau’s penchant for running star point guards into the ground, we’re going to have to keep an eye on Jalen Brunson, who has perhaps established himself as the most popular Knicks player of this century. But this team, which

hustles and battles night after night, finding ways to win and turning themselves into “must watch” TV for even the most casual fan. I know in my bones that an NBA title is still a long shot for this group. They don’t quite have the star power to measure up against teams like Boston or the Nuggets, but that’s what makes them so endearing; it’s a bunch of hard-nosed players—many of them coming from Villanova—playing with a chip on their shoulder and nothing to lose. Given the Knicks’ history, there’s something fitting that this is the team that finally has the buzz back in the Garden. Knick fans have always viewed themselves as perpetual underdogs, the team as the franchise that is that one star player away from being a true contender. We’ve seen our dreams dashed time and again by the Michael Jordans, the Hakeems, the Reggie Millers of the world, and now, with a gritty, exciting cast of characters, we’re looking to buck that trend.

Sports Editor Mike Smith has an important question to ask; is it time to start believing in the Knicks?

Will this be the year? It’s certainly too early to tell; we’re not even at the All-Star Break. But like every other fan who bleeds Blue and Orange, I think this team can make a real run, giving us something to really be proud of again. Maybe this time, our joy won’t

be short-lived and the season won’t just be a foot-note in a larger narrative of grief. At least that’s what we hope. And as Knick fan, hope is generally all we’ve got. Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_Sports

Mamaroneck hosts White Plains for wrestling celebration By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor

Last Wednesday’s wrestling meet between Mamaroneck and White Plains might have just been a standard regular season matchup, but the atmosphere in Mamaroneck’s gym was anything but typical. On Jan. 24, Mamaroneck held its second-annual Battle at Post, a celebration of the Tigers’ wrestling past, present and future. The Post Road gym was packed with young wrestlers, as well as returning alumni, as the community turned out to cheer on the home squad. Although Mamaroneck would eventually fall to their visitors from White Plains 36-30, the day was still a successful one, according to Tiger coach Scott Gilberti, who said he envisions the event as something analogous to homecoming for the Mamaroneck grapplers. “This is definitely something we are trying to build, and getting the younger kids in the community excited about wrestling is something we hope will pay off for us in a few years,” he said. “We want to establish that connection with the youth pro-

grams and have the younger kids excited about wrestling.” The idea of the wrestling community was a through-line on the evening, as Gilberti said Mamaroneck chose to invite White Plains as its opponent for the event due to the historical significance of the rivalry and the mutual respect between the teams and coaching staffs. “Yes, there is the rivalry aspect, which we also had with Scarsdale when we did this with them last year,” said Gilberti. “ But it’s also because we have a great relationship with the White Plains staff and next year, we’re going to return the favor by going there for a similar event.” Now, with the Battle at Post behind them, the Tigers will look ahead to the remainder of the regular season scheduled and the upcoming divisional tournaments. On Saturday, the Tigers competed at the Edgemont tournament, one last tune-up before the grapplers head into the Section 1 qualifiers this weekend. According to Gilberti, the next few days will be crucial as the athletes continue to focus on improving during each practice. “Right now, it’s really a

day-by-day thing, we can’t afford to look ahead at anything,” said Gilberti. “Everyone is concentrating at the task at hand, which is just

getting better, every time we set foot on the mat.”

Two Tiger teams square off on Jan. 25 at Mamaroneck High School. White Plains came away with a win, beating their hosts 36-30.
