We may no longer see people gathering in long queues, four-deep, hours before opening time and sharpening their elbows on each other in the attempt to bag a bargain. But the lure of huge, red reduction signs on shop windows is as strong as ever. Clutching Christmas gift vouchers and monetary presents, shoppers are dying to exchange them and the idea of stretching their value further is irresistible. Sales are the best reason, or excuse, to make those longed for changes to your home. Huge reductions in everything from furniture and fittings to whole new kitchens and bathrooms can make a dream idea a reality. And by not just thinking of what we can use now, but also
of what we will need later in the year, we have a chance to replace things like garden furniture well before summer begins. In fact, the best sales values are in the usefulness and longevity of whatever you buy. Think very hard about whether the attractiveness of an item is its appearance and price or the fact that it is something you have long wanted and needed but could not necessarily afford, unless the price was drastically reduced. Finally, when you are buying clothes and shoes from retailers and brands you are not familiar with, always try them on. Fillings and sizes of even basic items can vary a lot, and some places may not change items bought in a sale. And remember your customer rights, but always check what terms and conditions each outlet has for the return of items bought on sale.
