FIRST DYNAMIC PICTURES OF CUPRA FORMENTOR REVEALED • CUPRA FORMENTOR TAKES TO ITS NAMESAKE IN NORTH MALLORCA TO SHOW OFF DYNAMIC PROWESS • CUV IS THE FIRST MODEL DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE BRAND • THE NEW MODEL INTEGRATES LATEST-GENERATION TECHNOLOGIES TO PROVIDE A UNIQUE DRIVING EXPERIENCE • CUPRA'S HIGH-PERFORMANCE PLUG-IN HYBRID MOTOR IS PAIRED WITH DUAL-CLUTCH DSG TRANSMISSION DELIVERS 180KW/245PS
T
he CUPRA Formentor has made its dynamic debut around the stunning roads of Cap de Formentor, Mallorca. The CUV is the first model developed specifically by CUPRA and made its public static debut at Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. The vehicle brings together the benefits of a performance car with the qualities of an SUV, at a time when the CUV segment is destined to see incredible growth. It demonstrates the ambition, expressiveness and inspiration that the brand inherently holds and underlines the CUPRA’s position as a technology brand with one eye on the future. The CUPRA Formentor is engineered to take the brand into the future, incorporating one of the most advanced propulsion systems and providing the performance the CUPRA badge demands, but in a sustainable manner. Powering the CUPRA Formentor is the highperformance plug-in hybrid engine, a powertrain designed to meet today’s requirements for performance and efficiency and begin the electrification of the brand. Mixing the technology of an advanced high-performance plug-in hybrid petrol engine with a high power output and the high-torque characteristics of an electric motor allows the CUPRA Formentor to surpass the performance expectations of the driver. Linked to a dual-clutch DSG transmission the total
output of 180kW/245PS is delivered seamlessly to the wheels. The intelligent DCC chassis setup and differential lock mean that the vehicle drives impressively no matter the conditions or style as the driver directs the car with its progressive steering. But while the CUPRA Formentor is developed to offer the highest levels of dynamics, the combination of electric and combustion energy also allows the car to reduce the overall fuel consumption of the vehicle, and significantly lowers carbon emissions. With the advantage of a large integrated battery pack, the CUPRA Formentor can drive in pure electric mode for up to 31 miles (50km) in the new WLTP cycle (equivalent to a range of around 43.5 miles / 70km in the NEDC cycle). The CUPRA Formentor has been sculpted to emphasise its varied attributes and the last word in sophistication. The CUPRA Formentor is closer to the ground to highlight its sportiness, with a visual emphasis placed towards the rear of the vehicle while at the same time accentuating the length of the bonnet, underscoring its dynamic proportions. The two-tone body is reminiscent of a robust all-terrain
vehicle, but the CUPRA Formentor’s design uses the aesthetic technique to lighten the vehicle’s silhouette. Unlike the toughened, rough finish on a traditional SUV, the CUPRA Formentor uses a seamless design, greatly amplifying the vehicle’s exterior quality. The high-quality aesthetic is strengthened with the integration of the rear infinite light concept that magnifies the distinctive look of the rear of the vehicle, while the overall design is heightened by the matt petrol blue exclusive exterior colour.
ALL-NEW 2019 MAZDA3 ACHIEVES 5 STAR EURO NCAP RATING • OUTSTANDING 98% SCORE IN THE ADULT OCCUPANT CATEGORY • WIDER RANGE OF I-ACTIVSENSE SAFETY TECHNOLOGIES AND ENHANCED PEDESTRIAN PROTECTION he All-New 2019 Mazda3 has been awarded the maximum five-star rating by Euro NCAP in its latest series of tests. Following the Mazda6 last year, this is the second Mazda to achieve an overall five-star rating
T
under the new, more stringent 2018 Euro NCAP crashworthiness ratings. The All-New Mazda3 performed impressively in all four Euro NCAP test categories -Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Vulnerable Road User (pedestrian safety) and Safety Assist. This may be attributed to three key factors: the adoption of the very latest SkyactivVehicle Architecture, which features a high-rigidity, impactabsorbing yet lightweight bodyshell; an even wider range of advanced i-Activsense safety technologies to help drivers identify potential risks and reduce the likelihood of damage or injury; and enhanced pedestrian protection performance. With a truly outstanding 98% score in the Adult Occupant category, the All-New Mazda3 achieved maximum points for
frontal full width impact, and both car and pole side impacts. Mazda's Smart Brake Support system also gained full marks in low speed tests, with collisions avoided in all scenarios. An excellent Child Occupant score of 87% includes maximum points for child protection in the dynamic tests, with full marks for both frontal and lateral impact. Vulnerable Road User (pedestrian safety) tests garnered an equally noteworthy 81%, with maximum points for pedestrian leg and pelvis area protection. And an impressive 73% score in the Safety Assist category pays tribute to
efficiency of the All-New Mazda3's comprehensive suite of i-Activsense safety features. Superior driving dynamics throughout the Mazda vehicle range are a vindication of the company's painstaking Skyactiv Technology programmes. They also contribute to the new Mazda3's five-star Euro NCAP achievement, in the form of its linear, responsive and predictable acceleration, braking, handling and steering. By making the car easier to drive safely, such attributes further reduce the potential for accidents without compromising Mazda's traditional fun-to-drive character. May 2019 | motoring 03

INTERNATIONAL ENGINE OF THE YEAR AWARDS: AUDI’S 2.0 TFSI ENGINE WINS IN ITS CLASS Perennially popular turbocharged four-cylinder TFSI is acknowledged in awards roll call recognising some of the world’s finest engines • HUGE SUCCESS FOR AUDI IN THE IMPORTANT CATEGORY OF ENGINES WITH BETWEEN 150 AND 250METRIC HORSEPOWER • HANS-JOACHIM ROTHENPIELER, MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF MANAGEMENT OF AUDI AG FOR TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT:“THE VERSATILE 2.0 TFSI IS A DRIVE THAT WE ALSO USE AS A HYBRID AND CNG ENGINE” • FIFTEENTH CLASS VICTORY IN A ROW FOR A TFSI ENGINE FROM AUDI 04 motoring | May 2019
he 2.0 TFSI from Audi has won the “International Engine of the Year” award in the category of engines with between 150 and 250metric horsepower. An international panel of experts comprising 70 automotive journalists voted the fourcylinder gasoline engine the winner of its class. The award ceremony took place as part of the “Engine Expo + The Powertrain Technology Show 2019” at the exhibition and trade centre “Messe Stuttgart” yesterday. According to the jury, the fourcylinder engine is “one of the most flexible and versatile engines ever to be developed— in short, it can do it all.” HansJoachim Rothenpieler, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Technical Development, explains this strength: “We are delighted to receive this award, because it acknowledges the versatility of the 2.0 TFSI. We use it not only as a pure gasoline engine, but also as a plug-in hybrid drive and for operation with natural
T
gas or Audi e-gas.” Rothenpieler is particularly proud of the success record of the TFSI technology. The head of Audi Technical Development looks back: “We introduced the first TFSI to the market in 2004. Since then, we have achieved class victory with a TFSI at the awards every year.” Between 2005 and 2009, Audi won the two-litre category with the 2.0 TFSI, and between 2010 and 2018, the company won in the larger class with the five-cylinder 2.5TFSI. Following the switch from displacement-based to horsepower-based categories in 2019, the two-litre four-cylinder engine is back on the winners’ podium. The abbreviation TFSI stands for turbocharging and direct injection; Audi was the first automotive manufacturer in the world to mass-produce this combination in 2004. The brand started its downsizing strategy, i.e.replacing displacement with charging, with the first 2.0 TFSI in the A3 Sportback. A new engine generation followed in
2007: What was known as EA (Entwicklungsauftrag, development order) 888 was designed for the global markets. It rolled off the line at the Hungarian plant in Győr, in Dalian, China, and other locations. The “engine of the world” is suitable for longitudinal installation in the larger Audi models as well as for lateral installation, including in the Group brands Volkswagen, Škoda, and SEAT. The 2.0 TFSI
currently drives numerous Audi models from ten product lines and its power spectrum extends up to 245 metric horsepower. And the success story goes on: At the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, Audi presented the Q5 as a plug-in hybrid variant, where the 2.0 TFSI works in conjunction with a powerful electric motor. The four-cylinder engine is also used in the g-tron models in the medium-size class. They use natural gas (CNG) or Audi e-gas, a type of fuel for which Audi uses a sustainable process to produce large quantities itself.
R
olls-Royce Motor Cars will unveil its latest Collection Car, Wraith Eagle VIII, on the shores of Lake Como at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, 24-26 May. Created by the Bespoke Collective at the House of RollsRoyce, a Collection of just 50 Wraith Eagle VIII motor cars will tell the epic tale of one of the most pivotal moments of the 20th century. Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Brown braved uncharted skies to make the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June, 1919. Contemporaries of Sir Henry Royce, Alcock and Brown flew non-stop from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Clifden, Ireland in a modified First World War Vickers Vimy bomber aircraft. The bi-plane was powered by twin 20.3 litre, 350 bhp, Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engines. It is from this remarkable engine that this Collection takes its name. Rolls-Royce marks the 100 year anniversary of this feat with a highly contemporary Collection that speaks to today’s adventurers, whilst honouring those who changed the course of history. “I do not know what we should most admire – their audacity, determination, skill, science, their aeroplane, their Rolls-Royce engines – or their good fortune”, commented Sir Winston Churchill, following the perilous journey that brought unfathomable advancement to 20th century society. Alcock and Brown established a legend and gained a place alongside Sir Donald Campbell in the most select club in the world; those who push beyond previous conceptions of human endeavour to achieve seemingly impossible records on land, water and now, air. Their one binding characteristic? RollsRoyce power. The duo suffered every conceivable challenge an aviator could face. The RollsRoyce Eagle VIII engines were the only components that proved indestructible. The engines propelled the aerial voyage at previously unimagined speeds, averaging 115 mph. Their peril cannot be underestimated. Their radio and navigation instruments failed almost immediately, leaving the pilots flying unaided at night through dense cloud and freezing fog for many hours, sometimes upside down. Eventually they emerged from
the cloud and using Brown’s extraordinary skill as a navigator, flew by the stars to the coast of Ireland. The exterior of the Wraith Eagle VIII Collection Car is evocative of Alcock and Brown’s compelling night time adventure. Swathed in Gunmetal with a Selby Grey upper two-tone, the colours are separated by a brass feature line, a hint at the detailing that lies within. The black grille vanes draw immediate reference to the Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engine cowling on the Vickers Vimy aircraft, the wheels are part polished with a translucent shadow finish. Within, the finely executed interior mirrors the exterior hue. Selby Grey and black leather are accented by brass, redolent of the brass sextant so integral to the success of the transatlantic journey. Executed in a contemporary fashion, the material populates key areas throughout the cockpit of the Collection. Brass speaker covers depict the estimated flight distance of 1,880 miles and ‘RR’ monograms are embroidered in brass coloured thread onto headrests. A flash of brass complements the navigator door paniers, whilst the door of the driver includes a brass plaque with Churchill’s quote commending the duo’s remarkable achievements. Inspired by the night time flight of our intrepid heroes, the fascia represents a modern-day abstract interpretation of the view the pair would have enjoyed as finally, their craft cleared the thick fog and cloud. In a
fusion of contemporary and traditional practises, Smoked Eucalyptus wood is vacuum metalized in gold before being inlaid with silver and copper, to depict the rich detail seen in night time images of the Earth from above. The scene extends to the centre console providing both an emotive and immersive experience for today’s occupants – the cockpit is in perspective with the headliner. Below, the brass-stitched quilted sides of the centre tunnel provide a direct nod to the V12 engined Vickers Vimy. The clock of a Rolls-Royce is frequently viewed as jewellery, with many patrons choosing this canvas to tell the story of their motor car in miniature. Wraith Eagle VIII is no exception. Our intrepid pioneers recounted that their instrument panel was frozen from the high altitude and the poor conditions, referring to the only illumination coming from the green glow of the control panel lighting and the burst of flame from the starboard engine. In homage to this, the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective has masterfully fabricated a clock with an iced background effect which glows a faint green in night time driving conditions. The red hour hand sits atop compass inspired lines on the clock’s fascia, whilst the landing location coordinates are engraved below. Just 50 of these highly collectable motor cars will be created for discerning collectors at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex – a Centre of Global Luxury Manufacturing Excellence.
ŠKODA CITIGOE IV: THE ZERO EMISSION CITY SPORTSTER • ŠKODA’S FIRST ALL ELECTRIC PRODUCTION VEHICLE IN ITS 124 YEAR HISTORY • THE ZERO EMISSION CITY SPEEDSTER IS FITTED WITH AN ELECTRIC MOTOR WITH A POWER OUTPUT OF 61 KW • 36.8 KWH LITHIUM-ION BATTERY ENABLES A RANGE OF UP TO 265 KM IN THE WLTP CYCLE y launching the ŠKODA CITIGOe iV, the Czech car manufacturer is embarking on a new era – 124 years after it was founded. As the first ŠKODA production vehicle, the four-seater city car is powered exclusively by a 61 kW electric motor. This means the CITIGOe iV is powered not only purely by a battery, but also without generating any emissions. The 36.8 kWh lithium ion battery allows for a range of up to 265 km in the WLTP cycle – meaning the CITIGOe iV is perfectly equipped for traffic in modern cities. Series production of the environmentally friendly
B
city speedster will begin in the second half of 2019. Zero emission, nimble and spacious despite compact dimensions, the ŠKODA CITIGOe iV is a perfect vehicle for modern cities. Despite being just 3,597 mm long and 1,645 mm wide, the smallest ŠKODA also offers a spacious interior for four passengers and a boot capacity of 250 l. The boot can easily be increased to 923 l by folding down the rear seats. The front wheel drive CITIGOe iV is ŠKODA’s first all electric production vehicle and features an electric motor with a power output of 61 kW. The maximum torque of 210 Nm – which is relatively high due to the drive concept – is available straight away, as is typical for electric motors. The short burst from 60 to 100 km/h therefore takes 7.6 seconds, while the CITIGOe iV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.5 seconds. Its top speed is 130 km/h.
A range of 265 km and battery charging to 80 per cent in just 1 hour The ŠKODA CITIGOe iV is powered by a 60 Ah lithium ion battery with a capacity of 36.8 kWh. The battery in the chassis floor measures 1.1x1.7 m and is just 0.3 m high. It consists of a total of 168 cells and allows for a range of 265 km in the WLTP cycle. When the power runs out, the battery can be recharged to 80 per cent in 1 hour using a CCS (Combined Charging System) charging cable connected to a 40 kW DC fast charger. Using a 7.2 kW AC wall box, the battery is charged to 80 per cent in 4 hours 8 minutes, or 12 hours 37 minutes using a 2.3 kW home charging station. Both the Combined Charging System and the cable required for AC charging come as standard in the Style trim variant and are optional for the ŠKODA CITIGOe iV Ambition. Should this charging option not be available, the ŠKODA CITIGOe iV’s battery can also be recharged using a standard household plug socket.
Interior with new instrument panel
The interior of the ŠKODA CITIGO has also been revised for the iV version. The black instrument panel and the area above it – black in the Ambition trim level and silver in the Style
models – have been redesigned. Standard equipment includes electric front windows, Climatronic, remote central locking, the Swing II radio and the Move&Fun smartphone docking station on the dashboard. Using the Move&Fun app, a mobile phone can be used as an additional display for vehicle data, for media playback or as a navigation system. On top of that, the CITIGOe iV comes with new mobile online services for the app, allowing the battery or air conditioning to be accessed remotely. In addition, the CITIGOe iV comes equipped with Lane Assist as standard and features front airbags as well as head and thorax airbags for the front seats. The Style trim level comes with ambient lighting on the dashboard, electrically adjustable and heated wing mirrors as well as the Leather Detailing package, which includes a leather steering wheel, gearstick and handbrake lever. The front seats are height-adjustable and boast high quality fabric covers; the door handles feature chrome decor. There is the option of a Comfort package, offering heated front seats, four additional speakers and parking sensors at the rear. A Winter package is also exclusively available for the CITIGOe iV Style. In addition to heated front seats, this also includes heatinsulating glass for the windscreen and a rain and a light sensor including an animated Coming/Leaving Home function. The list of options also includes an adjustable false boot floor, cruise control and tinted ‘Sunset’ glass for the rear window and rear side windows, for example. *All information is provisional and subject to change.
