RENAULT CAPTUR VS RENAULT CLIO
THE NEW CONTINENTAL GT CONVERTIBLE NUMBER 1 EDITION BY MULLINER • IN BENTLEY’S CENTENARY YEAR, THIS NEW LIMITED EDITION MODEL PAYS HOMAGE TO LEGENDARY NO. 1 BENTLEY BLOWER OF 1929 • MODERN INTERPRETATION OF THE ICONIC 1929 RACING CAR LIMITED TO JUST 100 EXAMPLES WORLDWIDE
B
entley has created a unique, Limited Edition model that pays homage to the legendary No. 1 Bentley Blower of 1929. The Continental GT Convertible Number 1 Edition by Mulliner is a modern interpretation of a truly iconic racing car, and features 18 carat gold plated fender badging and a remarkable piece of history, cast from a piston from the original No.1, set within the innovative Bentley Rotating Display. Based on the Bentley Continental GT Convertible, the world’s definitive open-top Grand Tourer, the Number 1 Edition is restricted to just 100 bespoke examples. Handcrafted in England during Bentley’s centenary year, the exhilarating open-top model contains exquisite design elements that celebrate some of the pioneering individuals from the marque’s first 100 years. The Number 1 Edition showcases a range of bespoke features that encapsulate the spirit of a golden era of motorsport. Available in either Dragon Red II or Beluga, and with a Claret or Beluga folding hood, the Limited Edition is equipped with a Centenary Pack, Bentley Black Line Specification and Carbon Body Kit, rounded off by the painted Number 1 front grille. At the heart of the Number 1 Edition sits an enhanced version of Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre, twinturbocharged W12 TSI engine. Just like the original,
supercharged Blower of 1929, it provides exhilarating and agile performance, representing the pinnacle of contemporary car design. The new Number 1 Edition offers customers the exclusive and rare opportunity to own a vehicle that embodies the true spirit of Bentley’s racing history.
Number 1 Edition – A Modern Interpretation of a Classic The new Continental GT Convertible Number 1 Edition by Mulliner encapsulates Bentley’s remarkable spirit of achievement during the last century. It was first experienced in 1932 at the Brooklands racing circuit, near London, when the original, supercharged No. 1 ‘Blower’ set a thrilling lap record. The new Number 1 Edition harks back to that remarkable vehicle, a car that is responsible for some of the most memorable moments in Bentley’s illustrious past. Just 100 examples will be made during the Crewebased marque’s centenary year, further enhancing the Number 1 Edition’s exclusivity. The Number 1 Edition is the final car in Bentley’s Centenary trilogy. Like the Mulsanne W.O. Edition and the Continental GT Number 9 Edition, it incorporates a unique piece of Bentley history. Within the innovative Bentley Rotating Display, a small wheel spinner,
reminiscent of wheel spinners found on the No.1 and other historic Bentleys, has been set in resin. Seamlessly merging the best of design both present and past, each wheel spinner has been cast from a piston from the No.1, taken during restoration work. The exquisitely designed, third generation Continental GT Convertible has been further enhanced with distinctive elements inspired by the original No. 1. As well as the Bentley Black Line Specification and Carbon Body Kit, the Limited Edition is offered in Dragon Red II or Beluga exterior paint, with a Claret or Beluga folding hood. The Number 1 Edition also features the Bentley Centenary Specification Pack, which includes Centenary badges to the rear and on the wheel centres, Centenary LED welcome lamps, Centenary badging on the gear lever and steering wheel, and a Centenary badge on the key-fob. A painted Number 1 front grille is complemented with an 18 carat gold plated fender badge, jewelled filler and oil caps, and 22-inch MDS wheels in either Cricket Ball or Gloss Black finish. Inside, a new colour split of either Cricket Ball or Beluga main hide is complemented by Heritage hide on the seats and door pads, with a debossed B insignia on the headrests and door inserts. The Grand Black wood veneer is enhanced by 18 carat gold plated organ stops and an Alcantara steering wheel and gear lever. Passengers are welcomed by a Number 1 treadplate insert as they step into a luxurious cabin. As well as a British Jaeger clock featuring a Number 1 face, the uniquely crafted dashboard also incorporates Engine Spin on the centre console. Often referred to as ‘Turned Aluminium’, Engine Spin was a popular racing car and aviation finish in the 1920s and ‘30s as it limited light reflection. Based in Crewe, England, Mulliner is Bentley’s personal commissioning division and exists to respond to the requirements of the marque’s most discerning customers. As well as creating truly exclusive Limited Edition models, any type of personalisation can be undertaken to create a unique Bentley of individual taste.
Centenary Year 10th July, 2019 marks Bentley’s 100th year - an extraordinary milestone achieved by only a few companies. The new Number 1 Edition is just one part of a year-long series of special activities that have been planned, with celebrations at events around the world. They will showcase Bentley’s motoring evolution over the last 100 years, highlighting its global success today and the exciting future of innovation ahead. 02 motoring | June 2019
ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA SHOWCASES ELECTRIC FUTURE • ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA HOSTS FIRST ELECTRIC FUTURE EVENT IN LONDON • NEWLY UNVEILED RAPIDE E AND LAGONDA VISION CONCEPT ON DISPLAY
F
or two days in central London, Aston Martin Lagonda showcased its zero emission powertrain technologies with the company’s first Electric Future event. Relaunched as the world’s first zero emission luxury brand in 2018, Lagonda will confound traditional thinking and take full advantage of the latest advances in electrification and autonomous driving technologies. Sitting nose-to-nose will be the company’s first electric sports car, Rapide E and its all-electric Lagonda Vision Concept. With the Lagonda Vision Concept unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2018 and Rapide E at the Shanghai Automotive Show a few months ago the event provides the first chance for the UK to preview the company’s future technologies. Both cars were on display on Wednesday the 26th of June and Thursday the 27th of June at the company’s central London
showroom, Aston Martin Mayfair. Representatives from Aston Martin Lagonda will be on hand to talk guests through the technology and a gigantic floral display by London-based florist, Grace & Thorn, will provide a gorgeous backdrop to showcase each of these future editions. Speaking about the event, Marek Reichman, Chief Creative Officer at Aston
Martin Lagonda, said: “When we relaunched Lagonda, we set ourselves an ambitious target to be the world’s first luxury electric brand. We see the Lagonda brand sitting within a unique niche in the market. It is for the high-end luxury customer who wants to explore and be autonomous while remaining mindful of the impact they are having on the environment. Lagonda will achieve this but it will also provide joy and delight to the people who get to enjoy its unique internal environment.” Currently on the market, the Aston Martin Rapide E is the first battery electric vehicle (BEV) produced by the famous British marque. It will enter production at the end of the year at the company’s second manufacturing facility and the marques Home of Electrification, St Athan which is based in Wales. With a limited run of just 155, the same number as the vehicle’s electrically limited top-speed, the project has been completed in partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering. Featuring twin electric motors that produce 610PS and
950Nm of torque, Rapide E will be capable of reaching 0-60mph in less than four seconds. With performance characteristics tuned to match or exceed those of the original V12 model. Capable of achieving 0-60mph in under 4 seconds and a 50-70mph time of just 1.5 seconds. Speaking about Rapide E, John Caress, Vehicle Line Director for Rapide E at Aston Martin Lagonda, said: “Rapide E is proof of Aston Martin’s commitment to its Second Century Plan. Having an electric powertrain is no longer just a vision for our company, it’s reality. We are producing fully-electric vehicles which will form part of our future strategy that will culminate when the first Lagonda vehicle enters the market. “We have worked hard to ensure the high-performance standards of our customers are met. To achieve this Rapide E has a range of just over 200 miles on the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) and a 0 to 80% charge which can be achieved in under 35 minutes using a 800V DC 100kW charging station.”

emergency services communications system via the integrated touch screen display on the dashboard. The performance SUV makes an imposing addition to blue light fleets on the road thanks to its striking design, which features 20-inch Xtreme alloy wheels, gloss black finish on the grille and mirrors, dual exhaust pipes, vRS sports bumpers and
trademark red brake calipers. ŠKODA has introduced a ‘onestop’ shop package for emergency services fleets, which allows vehicles to be Outright Purchased or financed through Volkswagen Financial Services. Fleet managers now have the additional option of contract hire for added flexibility and value-for money or they can opt for a cost-effective leasing
package. Alongside hassle-free finance solutions, ŠKODA fleet can provide the vehicles fully converted to suit specific requirements, and fleet managers have the peace of mind that the conversion, breakdown recovery, service, maintenance and repair requirements are built into one package. DESIGNING FOR TOMORROW BMW Group Design is already shaping how we will experience sheer driving pleasure in the future
ow will we be moved in the future? BMW Group Design is already shaping how we will experience Sheer Driving Pleasure in the future. The innovative fields of Autonomous Driving, Connectivity, Electrification and Services (ACES) will open up totally new opportunities and experiences – and, at the same time, herald a paradigm shift in the automotive industry. The BMW Group views design as the key to this future: It gives shape to areas of innovation and brings technology to life. Design also has the power to think beyond the possible and set ambitious

developments in motion. The BMW Group already showed this with the first BMW X5, which effectively invented the SUV segment; the iDrive Controller, which is found in virtually every vehicle in one form or another these days, or its BMW i models. They were all the first of their kind and made a permanent impression on the automotive world.
We design experiences
In the future, drivers will be able to choose whether they want to be driven autonomously (in EASE Mode) or drive themselves (in BOOST Mode).
EASE and BOOST moments form the basis for the design of every future BMW model. In a nutshell, the concept is: “EASE your Life – BOOST your Moment.” The EASE and BOOST experiences illustrate what BMW Group Design aspires to and also what future products could look like: The purpose of design goes far beyond deciding shape and form. BMW Group Design creates experiences. The automobile is no longer just a “vehicle”; it can be a place for relaxation, interaction, entertainment and concentration. At the same time, it can also become the ultimate
driving machine, enabling customers to experience new aspects of driving dynamics. The car will be transformed into a new kind of living space dedicated to people’s needs and wants. The BMW Group Design is applying the ACES fields of innovation in all their different forms to create this experience space.
EASE your Life – BOOST your Moment What these experiences could look like in the future in concrete form is shown by the two Vision Vehicles: the BMW Vision iNEXT,
unveiled in 2018, and the brandnew BMW Vision M NEXT. Each represents a prototypical implementation of the future BMW experience worlds of “EASE” (BMW Vision iNEXT) and “BOOST” (BMW Vision M NEXT). EASE encompasses all experiences that occur while the vehicle is taking care of driving tasks itself; BOOST, on the other hand, is all about the ultimate, active driving experience. In the upcoming product range, BMW Group Design will realise a wide range of experiences where these two versions meet in the near future.

VAUXHALL REVEALS ALL-NEW CORSA • ALL-NEW, FIFTH GENERATION CORSA REVEALED WITH MOST EFFICIENT POWERTRAIN EVER • HIGH EFFICIENCY, LIVELY PERFORMANCE AND FUN DRIVING EXPERIENCE ARE KEY FEATURES OF ALL-NEW CORSA • LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN MEANS ALL-NEW CORSA WEIGHS JUST 980KG, 10% LIGHTER THAN OUTGOING MODEL st a few weeks after the presentation of the battery-electric version, Vauxhall has released first pictures of the all-new fifth generation Corsa, that features a new range of high-efficiency petrol and diesel powertrains. The all-new Corsa offers reduced fuel consumption, flexibility and refinement as key characteristics of all powertrain options, with every variant of the new model emitting less CO2 than the most efficient versions of the Corsa currently on offer. Powertrains Compared with the current powertrains of the Corsa range, the new engines have significantly reduced fuel consumption and emissions while retaining similar power outputs to the outgoing model. For the allnew Corsa, the engine line-up includes an
J
entry level 1.2-litre (75PS) petrol unit and an award-winning three-cylinder, directinjection turbocharged 1.2-litre (100PS) allaluminium powertrain. The two petrol engines are joined by a 1.5-litre diesel with 100PS and maximum torque of 250Nm. High efficiency and lively performance are signature characteristics of the new petrol engines. Internal friction and friction losses have been reduced to a minimum, resulting in smooth and efficient power delivery. The turbocharger reacts immediately when prompted, with a strong torque output developed at low revs. The maximum torque rating of the 1.2-litre (100PS) engine is 205Nm, and at least 95 per cent of maximum torque is developed between 1,500 and 3,500rpm. In combination with the low vehicle weight, excellent
aerodynamics and the optimised gear ratios, these factors make the Corsa great fun to drive. Further to the enhancements made to the engine line-up, the powertrain improvements also include the transmission options. The gearbox range is topped by the eight-speed, lightweight automatic transmission. The 1.2-litre (75PS) entry-level engine is fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard. With the 1.2-litre (100PS) unit, customers can choose from a six-speed manual or a smooth eight-speed automatic. Adaptive shift programmes and Quickshift-technology are state-of-the-art in this segment, while drivers can shift gears themselves with the paddles at the steering wheel. For optimum exhaust after-treatment, the emissions reduction system – consisting of a passive oxidation catalyst/NOx absorber, AdBlue injector, SCR catalyst and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – is grouped together as a compact single unit, as near as possible to the engine. The NOx absorber acts as a cold start catalyst, reducing NOx emissions at temperatures below the SCR light-off. Customers in the market for an all-electric version, can choose the all-new Corsa-e. Thanks to the common modular platform (CMP), various powertrains can be offered on one platform and produced on a single line. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Infotainment and Connectivity The all-new Corsa offers numerous assistance systems, such as front collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, intelligent speed
control and limiter, lane keep assist and traffic sign recognition. A range of new infotainment systems made up of Multimedia Radio, Multimedia Navi with 7.0inch colour touchscreen and the top-of-theline Multimedia Navi Pro with 10.0-inch colour touch screen. The new telematics service, Vauxhall Connect, is available in the all-new Corsa range. The model features navigation with realtime traffic information, plus a direct link to breakdown assistance and emergency service call. All-New Corsa Achieves 10% Weight Loss Vauxhall’s all-new, fifth generation Corsa has achieved a significant weight loss, with the new model weighing in from just 980kg. Thanks to its lightweight design, the new Corsa weighs up to 108kg less than the outgoing model. This means that every new Corsa benefits from improved performance and handling, and increased efficiency, whether it’s powered by an electric motor or conventional engine. Despite losing around ten per cent of its weight, the Corsa retains similar dimensions to the outgoing model at 4.06m with five doors as standard. The light-weight design was created using the latest virtual development methods. The specific use of various steel grades and connection methods enabled the Corsa’s significant weight reduction. This includes the consistent use of high-strength and ultrahigh-strength steels, as well as the optimisation of load paths, connections, structure and form. Compared with the previous model, the body-in-white is 40kg lighter. Intellilux LED Matrix The all-new Corsa will be the first car in its class to feature adaptive, glare-free fullLED headlights. Previously seen on Astra and Insignia, Vauxhall’s pioneering glare-free lighting called IntelliLux LED Matrix is technology usually only found in premium cars. The glare-free matrix headlights, one of which is visible in the teaser image, automatically and continuously adapt to the prevailing traffic conditions. Approaching traffic and vehicles being followed are simply “cut out” of the illuminated area. Glare is minimised and drivers of the new Corsa can enjoy optimum visibility. June 2019 | motoring 05
VOLVO CARS RELEASES ARMOURED CARS FOR PEOPLE NEEDING HEIGHTENED PROTECTION WITH THE RELEASE OF THE VOLVO XC90 ARMOURED, VOLVO CARS TAKES ANOTHER STEP AS A MANUFACTURER OF ARMOURED VEHICLES. THE CARS ARE DESIGNED AND BUILT TO PROVIDE SAFE AND COMFORTABLE TRAVEL WITH A HIGH LEVEL OF PERSONAL PROTECTION FOR THE OCCUPANTS.
“W
e are proud to be able to offer these armoured cars. With our armoured cars, we can provide vehicles with a high level of personal security

for individuals who require heightened protection,” says Stephan Green, Marketing Director at Volvo Cars Special Vehicles. There is a growing global market for armoured vehicles at present, and a large number are manufactured with various
protection ratings. Volvo Cars has received numerous requests over the past few years to develop an armoured XC90. Volvo Cars has extensive experience of building police cars, fire engines and diverse special vehicles with high requirements in terms of
function, driveability and safety. In fact, the first Volvo police car was delivered back in 1929. “The XC90 Armoured (heavy) with VR8* protection rating (VPAM BRV 2009/ERV 2010) enables us to offer a car that provides a high level of protection while retaining the car’s fundamental properties. Potential customers include security services who would use the car to transport highprofile individuals,” says Green. Work to develop a car with a VPAM VR8 protection rating commenced just over two years ago. A certified VPAM VR8 rating means the car has 360-degree ballistic resistance as well as explosive resistance. The armoured car is built on the Inscription version of the Volvo XC90 T6 AWD, which is manufactured at the Torslanda plant in Sweden. The size and nature of the model make it the most suitable vehicle in Volvo Cars’ product portfolio for armouring. From Torslanda, the car is sent to TRASCO Bremen GmbH in Germany, a company which has specialised for many years in building highquality vehicles with high protection ratings. “Production is classified, with stringent procedures and oversight in place in order to attain the stipulated ballistic requirements,” says Green. The high-strength steel armour is 10 millimetres thick, while the thickness of the glass can be up to 50 millimetres. The armour adds approximately 1,400 kilograms to the XC90, which brings the total weight of the car up to 4,490kg (including five occupants). To cope with the increased weight, the car is fitted with uprated suspension and new brakes. “Production is carried out with extreme diligence, which is
imperative in order to fulfil the exceptionally high requirements placed on this class of security product. We strive to ensure that the car retains its properties despite the extensive armouring. The armour is fitted discreetly to make the car barely distinguishable from a standard XC90. Every customer also has their own unique requirements, which we satisfy by means of customised production,” says Green. The Volvo XC90 Armoured (heavy) is available to order now and the first customer deliveries will be made at the end of 2019. Volvo Cars also develops another version of the armoured car (light). This means that Volvo Cars has a full portfolio of cars able to offer high personal protection. These cars are built on the XC60 T6 AWD Inscription or XC90 T6 AWD Inscription. These versions are geared towards different clientele than the XC90 Armoured (heavy). Users could be individuals or companies requiring a car with a higher level of protection due to a geographical risk or a heightened personal threat. A market for these types of protective vehicles also exists among security services, the police, the diplomatic corps and private individuals. The cars are intended for Latin America and Europe. After construction, they are retrofitted in Brazil, where there is considerable demand for these types of cars as well as substantial experience of building them. These vehicles are designed to offer lighter protection compared with the XC90 Armoured (heavy). Sales of these cars are scheduled to begin in the first half of 2020.
