ABRUZZO Abruzzo, Citta Sant Angelo
STRETCHING FROM THE HEART OF THE APENNINES TO THE ADRIATIC SEA ABRUZO ’S DRAMATIC MOUNTAIN SCENERY, FLAT SANDY COASTLINE, ANCIENT FORESTS, MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE TOWNS AND ABANDONED BORGHI, LEND CREDENCE TO ABRUZZO'S FAME AS THE LAND OF A THOUSAND CASTLES. bruzzo is one of Italy's littleknown treasures: a tranquil mingling of mountains and coastline. The region is perfect for a driving holiday allowing you to visit small towns and countryside. Much of the inland part of Abruzzo is a wilderness, with the Apennine mountains to the north, and extensive plains and forests to the south. To the east the area has long beaches along the Adriatic Sea. Apart from major beachside destinations there are also long stretches of quieter coast where you can find a smaller beach where you are almost alone.
A
EASTERN ABRUZZO AND THE COASTLINE Eastern Abruzzo has beautiful beaches
with longer sandier beaches being along the northern part of the Abruzzo coast. Among the most visited of the Abruzzo sea resorts are Alba Adriatica, Costa dei Trabocchi, Francavilla al Mare, Giulianova, Martinsicuro, Montesilvano, Ortona, Pineto, Roseto degli Abruzzi, San Salvo, Silvi Marina, Tortoreto and Vasto. Ortona as well as being a coastal resort is home to a large Argonese castle. The main town on the coast is at Pescara with about 10 kilometres of sandy beaches. As well as its resorts there are some lovely hill towns and villages. Civitella del Tronto is a magnificent village and home to the largest fortress in Italy. Further south, Teramo boasts a Romanesque cathedral and a Roman amphitheatre. Atri is a pretty hill village fairly close to the coast and further south, also occupying a hilltop location is Lanciano with its medieval cathedral to the south. Lanciano is an important pilgrimage destination as it is the site of the Eucharist miracle in the Church of San Francesco in Piazza Plebiscito. Between Atri and Lanciano, Crecchio is home to an impressive castle which contains an Etruscan and Byzantine museum. A highlight of Abruzzo is the hill top town of Chieti (the capital of the province of Chieti), one of the oldest cities in Italy and is home to many fine palazzos and churches. Another highlight is the dramatic village and castle of Roccascalegna which is near the border with Molise.
Santa Maria della Pietà and Rocca Calascio
WESTERN ABRUZZO The region away from the coast is defined by its mountains, culminating with the Corno Grande mountain at almost 3000 metres high. Many visitors to Abruzzo's interior come for the skiing and popular ski resorts in Abruzzo include those at Campofelice, Campo Imperatore, Ovindoli, Rivisondoli, Pescocostanzo, Prati di Tivo, Roccaraso, Scanno and Tagliacozzo. The mountains of Abruzzo include numerous villages, towns, castles and other historic monuments. L'Aquila, the capital of Abruzzo is in the Gran Sasso mountains and has a long tradition of being one of the most historically interesting centres in Abruzzo, although the historic center suffered a great deal of damage during an earthquake in 2009. There ae parts of three different Italian National Parks within Abruzzo's borders the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the Mount Majella National Park and the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park - as well as the Sirente Velino Regional park and several Nature Reserves. Together these cover more than a third of the region.
coast, most first courses are fish-based. Often freshly caught fish is marinated, and rich soups are made with a variety of fresh fish. Inland lamb, kid, and mutton dominate, while pork loin, prosciutto, lonza, ventricina, and other typical salamis are produced locally. A typical meal in Abruzzo is accompanied by a selection of the best wines of the Region: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Sangiovese and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo.

WHAT TO TASTE

Abruzzo has a rich culinary tradition. Pasta is the preferred first course, and none is as typical as maccheroni alla chitarra with sheets of egg dough cut using a flat rolling pin on a wooden box with strings (hence the name "guitar"). Polenta is usually enjoyed with a spicy sausage ragù or meat sauce. On the

alle Reale was founded in 2000 with the goal of producing world-class wines. The Pizzolo family, in close consultation with Professor Leonardo Valenti and the agronomic faculty of the University of Milan, are working to develop a model for central Italian wines and winemaking. Working primarily with the Montepulciano varietal, they aim to create wines that highlight the grape’s intrinsic qualities: strength, exuberance, vitality, color, elegance, balance and depth. The process begins with the careful selection of grapes that are best suited to Valle Reale’s soil and climate, and therefore best express the distinct characteristics of the varietal. Their success is evident in the young, vibrant DOC base wine, and even more so in the cru, a new benchmark for Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
LOCATION OF VINEYARD Located in the green heart of Abruzzo, Valle Reale’s vineyards are situated inside one of Italy’s most beautiful national parks. This is a wild paradise, with deep gorges carved by glaciers, crystal-clear springs and a diverse array of flora and fauna. Valle Reale is one of the few wineproducing estates in this area of pristine beauty. The topography and climate of this part of Abruzzo is completely different from the rest of the region and unique within central Italy. The vineyards have thin soils

rich in limestone, with a light base of clay and sand. The proximity to the Gran Sasso mountain range, and the altitude of the estate itself, create wide fluctuations in temperature between day and night.
WINEMAKING PHILOSOPHY The grapes grown at Valle Reale take advantage of constant cool breezes that ensure good ventilation and minimize humidity — ideal for the development of fine aromas. Perfect ripening temperatures are reached only in
late fall when the first snow whitens Mount Morrone. The geographic and climatic peculiarities of this area are reflected in the wines, which are characterized by the trademarks of fully mature fruit: fresh, elegant perfume and aromatic complexity. San Calisto Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC. San Calisto is Valle Reale’s flagship wine. This muscular, yet refined, red is made from 100% Montepulciano grown in the San Calisto parcel, the oldest plot in the Valle Reale estate. This special vineyard is located in one of Italy's most beautiful national parks, surrounded by the majestic Gran Sasso mountain range. Here, the vines benefit from the high elevation, a wide diurnal temperature range, lots of cool breezes, and limestone-rich soils. Deep, ruby-red in color, San Calisto offers layered aromas of ripe blackberries and crushed black cherries, followed by spicy notes of cassis, leather, and Mediterranean wildflowers. The Valle Raale range of wines can be enjoyed locally or experienced first hand at its winery. For a cellar visit contact > Valle Reale Wines, Contrada S. HYUNDAI IONIQ NAMED UK’S BEST HYBRID • TOP MOTORING MONTHLY TITLE WHAT CAR? NAMES THE HYUNDAI IONIQ AS BEST HYBRID AT 2018 AWARD CEREMONY • THE IONIQ HYBRID IS PRAISED FOR ITS PRACTICALITY, DRIVEABILITY AND EQUIPMENT • WHAT CAR? COMMENDS THE HYUNDAI I30N AS ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST HOT HATCHES
h
yundai Motor scooped another top accolade at the 2018 What Car? Awards. The IONIQ Hybrid was named as the UK’s ‘Best Hybrid’, while the high-performance i30 N was commended as the ‘Best Hot Hatch for £20,000-£30,000’. The awards, judged by members of the What Car? road-test and editorial team, praised the IONIQ Hybrid for its cost, equipment and driveability and the allround performance capability of the i30N. Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car? said, "In the last year, we've seen a huge increase in the number of people reading about hybrid cars on whatcar.com, which is why we felt it was important to recognise the best models in the class. Toyota may have had the market for affordable hybrids pretty much sewn up with the Prius but now there’s a topnotch alternative in the shape of Hyundai’s IONIQ. More than any other
car, the IONIQ shows that you can now drive a hybrid without having to accept any compromises. Not only is it clean, temptingly priced and cheap to run, but it's more practical, better equipped and better to drive than its rivals. " Hyundai’s all-new i30 N highperformance hatchback was acknowledged as the Best Hot Hatch for £20,000-£30,000, with the What Car? team praising both the i30N and the i30N Performance’s cornering talents, playful handling, and accessible prices. Both models feature electronically controlled suspension, torque vectoring, launch control and rev-matching as standard. What Car? Editor, Steve Huntingford,
said: “If you had told us a year ago that Hyundai would soon have one of the world’s best hot hatches in its ranks, we’d have been dubious to say the least. But the Korean brand really has gone from zero to hero, bettering established rivals such as the Focus ST and the Volkswagen Golf GTI with its first serious attempt at building a car in this class.” Tony Whitehorn, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor UK, said, “We are hugely proud to see the IONIQ take top honours as the UK’s Best Hybrid. The IONIQ is representative of the shift that is currently taking place in the car market where consumers are now embracing low emission alternatives. The IONIQ which is available in Hybrid, Plug-In and
Electric versions means that we are able to offer even greater choice for our customers. “The i30 N is also another good example of offering choice – it is our first hot hatch and its all-round package of style, equipment, price and state-of-the art high performance technologies make it a fast and fun alternative to the more established names.” The IONIQ and i30 N both come with Hyundai’s industry-leading five-year unlimited mileage warranty and roadside assistance package. Standard equipment also includes the latest active safety features, such as Forward CollisionAvoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Intelligent Speed Limit Warning.

CAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2018 • ‘BEST SMALL SUV’ TITLE FOR THE JUSTLAUNCHED ARONA • NEW IBIZA NAMED ‘BEST SMALL CAR’ • LEON NAMED ‘BEST FAMILY CAR’ FOR LESS THAN £18,000 • ATECA PICKS UP ‘BEST FAMILY SUV’ FOR LESS THAN £20,000 TITLE EAT has taken the What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2018 by storm, with four different models – Arona, Ibiza, Leon and Ateca – each taking category wins. It’s a clean-sweep for the quartet of new cars that has spearheaded the Spanish manufacturer’s largest product offensive to date. The awards were presented at a glitzy ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel in London last night. The results mark an immediate success for the Arona, the latest addition to the fastgrowing SEAT line-up. Still in its launch phase in the UK, it has claimed the ‘Best Small SUV’ title in a hotly contested category, following up a glowing five-star What Car? magazine review. It

continues SEAT’s dominance of the category, with its larger brother, the Ateca, having taken the award in 2017. The What Car? judges referenced the fact that the Arona “is more affordable than most rivals” thanks to “great finance deals” and praised the “comfortable and well-equipped interior.” The impressive range of personalisation options – including the multiple no-cost combinations of contrasting roof and bodywork colour available – were “the cherry on top”. The New Ibiza carried off the ‘Best Small Car’ title, confirming its pre-eminence in the UK’s supermini class and, like Arona, building on a five-star assessment from What Car’s rigorous road test team. The judges declared:
“The Ibiza is everything a small car should be – it’s agile, practical and offers low running costs. There are just no weaknesses in its armour.”
When it comes to a new car for the family at price less than £18,000, the SEAT Leon – also a “best buy” winner in 2017 – was named the top choice. “SEAT is
on a roll at the moment,” the judges commented, “and the Leon kicked off its current revival. With a well-crafted interior and a focused driving style…it’s a great win for SEAT at this price point.” The Ateca (another member of the exclusive What Car? five-star car club) completed the impressive SEAT showing, acclaimed as the ‘Best Family SUV’ for less than £20,000. “Staggering value for money” in the judges’ opinion, the Ateca was rewarded for its impressive equipment features right from entry-level and the “punchy” performance of its 1.0 TSI Ecomotive 115 PS engine, adding a “fun” dimension to the car’s all round excellent functionality. Commenting on the brand’s impressive night, SEAT UK Director, Richard Harrison, said: “These awards are among the most keenly sought and highlyrespected in the car industry and it is a tremendous result for us to have collected so much silverware in one evening. There is a tangible sense of momentum with SEAT currently, and the judges’ comments confirm how we’re succeeding in our mission to give our customers even more style, quality, technology, choice and performance, with value-formoney guaranteed.”
Inadequate tread, as shown here, means the safety systems on your vehicle will not work as efficiently. That’s why regular checks on tyre inflation and tread depth are so important.
LOOK AFTER YOUR TYRES AND THEY WILL BE BETTER PLACED TO LOOK AFTER YOU, SAYS GEM oad safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is urging motorists to make regular checks on tyres, to ensure tread depths are sufficient and pressures are correct. GEM road safety officer Neil Worth comments: “We rely on our tyres to keep us safe on journeys. After all, they provide the only contact between the car we’re driving and the road surface. In an extreme situation, correctly inflated tyres with good levels of tread will allow all the other safety systems on a car to work at their most effective. “Inadequate tread or incorrect pressure mean one thing: the safety systems on your vehicle will not work as efficiently. That’s why regular checks on tyre inflation and tread depth are so important. GEM points out that there are economy benefits from properly inflated tyres, too. After all, incorrect inflation increases the chances of damage to a tyre, and under-inflated tyres create more resistance on the road, leading to an increase in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Neil Worth concludes: “We’re urging drivers to take time on a regular basis to ensure their tyres are correctly inflated, with plenty of tread. Straightforward checks don’t take long, and good tyres really could prove a life-saver for you and your passengers… possibly on your very next journey.”
R
GEM HAS ASSEMBLED A SELECTION OF EIGHT SIMPLE TYRE CARE TIPS: • Check the tread on each tyre on a regular basis - every two weeks should be a minimum. • Remember that you should carry out proper checks across

the entire width of a tyre and around its circumference. Check the depth of the main tread grooves in several places across and around the tyre. Use a simple gauge to check tread depth. The legal minimum tread depth for a car is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread width and round its entire circumference. Don’t wait until a tyre reaches the legal minimum before changing it. GEM recommends it’s time for a new tyre when the tread depth reaches 3mm. You will also find tread wear indicators at regular intervals around the main grooves. When a tyre’s tread surface is worn to the same level as these indicators, then the tyre is at the legal limit and must be replaced. Check for any cuts, tears, swellings and bumps. These could be caused by going through a pothole or hitting the kerb. If there’s anything to give you cause for concern, then get the tyre checked by an expert as soon as possible. Check pressure using a tyre pressure gauge or the air machines found on most garage forecourts (some will charge you, a few are still free). Pressures for your car can normally be found in your owner's manual. You may also find the pressure marked on the driver’s door pillar or inside the fuel flap. Otherwise, look up the pressures you need using a tyre pressure website. Recommended tyre pressures change if you are carrying a full load or a lot of passengers. So make sure you use the right figure for the journeys you are about to make. Don’t forget to check the condition of the spare tyre. Too often it’s the forgotten tyre until you suddenly find you need it.

he Jaguar I-PACE all-electric performance SUV has won the What Car? 2018 Reader Award, securing it the title of the most anticipated new car of 2018. What Car? readers chose Jaguar’s first allelectric model from a shortlist of 12 cars due to go on sale this year, including new models from Tesla, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. The award was presented in London last night. I-PACE combines a supercar silhouette with sports car performance and five-seater versatility. Jaguar’s designers and engineers have used the new electric vehicle architecture to tear up the rule book on usability. I-PACE occupies less road space than conventional mid-size SUVs, yet offers more room
for passengers and luggage than models in the segment above. Ian Callum, Jaguar Director of Design, said: “The IPACE is a radical departure for electric vehicles. It’s the product of authentic Jaguar design DNA matched with the most advanced electrification technology and British craftsmanship. Winning this award endorses our decision of dramatic, futurefacing design and is a great testament of customer reactions to our first-ever battery-powered electric vehicle.” Steve Huntingford, What Car? Editor, said: “Ever since the reveal of the Jaguar I-PACE Concept in late 2016 we’ve seen it garner a huge amount of interest from our readership. SUV sales show no signs of slowing down, and zero emissions vehicles are only set to get more and more popular, so the I-PACE is entering the market at exactly the right time. It certainly won’t be the only all-electric SUV going on sale in 2018, but as our Reader Award proves, it’s the one that most of our audience is excited about seeing.” The I-PACE will be the newest member of Jaguar’s ‘PACE’ family of SUVs, joining the F-PACE and recently launched E-PACE.The F-PACE has won more than 70 major global awards, and became the fastest-selling Jaguar ever, selling more than 100,000 since it went on sale in April 2016.The Jaguar E-PACE compact performance SUV is also available to order.
