MOOD BOARD s if to make up for its late start, summer seems to be extra hot already, so we were lucky to be able to shoot our bridal fashion pages in Popeye Village. Its quirky buildings, with plenty of shade and magnificent coastal views made it an ideal location.

And here we would like to congratulate our photographer, Bernard Polidano, on receiving a Lifetime Contribution award from the 2019 Malta Fashion Awards, and also our makeup artist Natasha Polidano on being chosen to show designs from her work as an MCAST student during the event.

SUMMER MAGIC Sand, sea and sunshine make the perfect setting for a summer wedding. Our mood inspires welcoming shady locations, the scent of summer flowers and cool sea breezes and the warmth of true romance in the air.

Our young model Jaelle Micallef, one of the top 10 of last year’s Miss Universe Malta finalists, made a beautiful summer bride and stayed perfectly happy and cool throughout. Summer really is a magical time for a wedding so congratulations to all engaged and newly-wed couples, and to those whose stories appear in this issue; each one illustrates how important it is to make such a special event truly your own. One subject no couple can afford to ignore is the matter of money so we have some hints on identifying and sharing the way you each feel about spending habits, and some of the new demands marriage might make on your finances. As we also know how important your wedding location will be we’ve been thinking of some of the things you will want to ask at each venue, before you make your final decision, to ensure you know exactly what you are getting, and that you and your guests will love it. If you’re looking to shake things up a little on your big day, the growing trend for a bride to make a speech at her wedding may interest you. We think it’s a lovely idea so take a look on page 11 for some inspiration; and a couple of cocktail recipes to enjoy at the time.

“My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep. The more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.” Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

With summer and the sea still in mind, we take a fresh look at accessories, and those most striking water-born jewels pearls. They have made the most beautiful and romantic pieces for centuries, and are one of this year’s most popular choices for bridal jewellery. Enjoy July’s issue, and we’re sure you will find plenty to inspire you as you plan your own perfect way to say I Do! See you in September,

HINTS & HELP

MANAGING MONEY AND MARRIAGE FINANCIAL MATTERS ARE AMONG THE TOP THREE ISSUES COUPLES NEED TO AGREE ON IF THEY ARE TO LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

M

anaging a workable wedding budget will probably be a couple’s first joint financial experience. But, contentious as the subject is, it is really important to discuss where you both stand on all money matters. Different views on what to spend and when to save can have serious repercussions if a couple doesn’t see eye to eye. So establishing how you will handle money matters and obligations early on will save a lot of anxiety and problems in the future. You could start by pooling your ideas and deciding to draw up a basic plan for joint essential expenses like, rent or mortgage payments, utility bills, standing orders and insurance policies (remember that on marriage you may want to update certain information, including the name/s of beneficiaries). From there you can move to the difference marriage can make to your income tax returns and banking systems. Should you be taxed jointly or separately? Will you have a joint bank account for general expenses and/or one each, for your own income and savings? Every couple’s circumstances are different and it is vital that you find a system that works openly, honestly and efficiently for you. This means identifying what your priorities are, such as how to share the costs of everyday living with those of home maintenance, holidays, further study fees, possible medical bills and, of course, children when the time comes. It means factoring in any debts you may already have,

8 I DO

and agreeing how much you are willing and able to put aside regularly for both rainy days and happy treats and occasions. When a couple are both working, there can sometimes be an issue over who has the higher income. From the very start it should not make the slightest difference to either of you who earns the most. The words spoken during your wedding vows have already made it clear you will love and support each other, to the best of your ability, whatever it takes. Respecting this and valuing what you each have to offer will make it easy to juggle your finances, whichever way they need to go. However that does not entitle one of a couple to put pressure on the other or to neglect their responsibilities. Unlike the situation not so long ago, couples can now have an equal hold on their money and access to it, so ultimately transparency is what counts the most. Loving couples do not run up odd amounts via online shopping and credit cards, enter into extravagant loan arrangements, or make financial investments without discussing it with each other. This can all be made much easier if they consult the experts, including banking and financial advisors, who will listen to what they both have to say and offer practical advice to suit all circumstances. And, if a situation arises where a couple’s financial circumstances suddenly change for the worse, they must make every effort to avoid apportioning unnecessary blame. Employment issues, accidents and illnesses; all sorts of unforeseen events can influence cash flow and savings in a way that neither could help. Instead of panic and pointless ‘whys’ and if onlys’, a sensible couple will talk things over and support each other in doing whatever it takes to improve matters, and make any necessary adjustments, until things change for the better again. Working along these lines a couple, either jointly or individually, will take a realistic approach to their budgeting plans and practices, and be less likely to find themselves struggling or fighting over money. And there are no words for the value this will add to their lifetime together.

COCKTAILS

Two cocktails to try WHITE WEDDING WHITE COSMOPOLITAN

A toast from the bride It is not unusual any more for a bride to make a toast at her wedding but it is important to get it just right

T

he fact that Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, made such an unprecedented break with tradition, royal or otherwise, by apparently making a speech at her wedding to Prince Harry is not as surprising as you might think. In this day and age many brides wants to say what is on their mind and acknowledge the people who mean so much to them on such a momentous occasion in their lives. Guests are used to speeches from the bride’s father, the groom and the best man. These are expected to be a combination of sentiment with sick, or off the wall, humour at the expense of the groom, and squirming embarrassment for the bride. Not many people can make a good, brief, amusing and heartwarming speech without a lot of nervous effort. All the online hints and article about speechmaking make this very obvious. Brides will soon realise there is an art to making a good speech. But a few tips to help if you are a bride planning to make a speech. If you can avoid using a microphone all the better; they often just get in the way and can feel artificial. Remember your audience. Wedding guests are a mix of age groups, families and friends, from different backgrounds, generations and interests. What is funny for some will leave others cold. Check with the other speech makers, so you do not repeat each other, then your audience will not get bored and restless. Keep it general. References that half your guests will not understand should be kept to a minimum, to avoid the others feeling excluded. In fact a bride is the best person to consider and include the youngest, oldest and less connected guests with a kindly mention. Write your speech down and practice it, over and over again. Make a note of the bullet points on a prettily embossed piece of card and refer to it if you need to; then you won’t have to worry about forgetting what you were going to say. Resist the temptation that many grooms and best men fall into of dragging up an embarrassing or racy story about your new husband. It will make him feel uncomfortable. Something sweet and sentimental is what everyone will be expecting and that will work much better. Wait until after your speech before you hit the champagne and cocktails. Drink is not the best thing to calm anyone’s nerves and fluffing your lines would be mortifying. Be yourself. Don’t worry if you are a bit shy, or not used to speaking in public. This is your day. These are your family and wedding guests. Everyone is on your side. Keep it brief and speak slowly, you may know what are you are saying but your guests will be hearing it for the first time. And smile, often. Including parents and special friends, plus something about the wedding is probably the part you will enjoy most; when you can let everyone know how much they and the whole day really means to you. Carry that off and there will sniffles even from people who never cry at weddings.

INSPIRATION

Representing the purity of love with their exquisite natural beauty, pearls make perfect wedding jewellery.

P

earls are believed to bring health, fortune, luck and prosperity and lead to a harmonious marriage. They are truly unique, especially when you consider that they are the only gemstones to come from a living creature. So, if you have heard any of the old superstitions about pearls being unlucky forget them now. They are currently extremely popular for brides and their attendants from all walks of life, including royalty. In fact, they have been worn in many cultures for centuries as pendants, traditional necklaces, earrings and bracelets. They are frequently sewn onto wedding dresses, trains and veils and can adorn tiaras and hair ornaments. Pearls certainly fit into the ‘something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue‘ tradition. And very often, mothers give their daughters a piece of pearl jewellery on their wedding day, because they are a symbol of transformation, to be worn by someone who is pure, honest, wise and dignified. THE CREATION OF A PEARL Mollusks such as oysters and mussels create pearls. A pearl’s creation begins when a tiny bacteria or speck of sand, known as an irritant, around which the pearl is formed, enters the mollusc. As a defence against this ‘intruder’ the mollusk begins to coat it with a strong, iridescent composite of mostly aragonite, known as nacre. Thousands of layers of nacre eventually build into a pearl, over a span of two to four years. In freshwater rivers and ponds, mussels produce pearls, while in saltwater they are produced by oysters. Today, freshwater pearls come mainly from China. Japan, Polynesia and Australia are the biggest providers of saltwater pearls. Among the different types of pearls to be found are Tahitian, Akoya and South Sea, and each type has a unique quality and appearance. Their connection with faraway oceans and freshwater sources gives pearls an almost ethereal quality; and the effort required to obtain natural pearls, together with their extreme rarity, has made them so incredibly valuable that most people now wear cultured pearls. These are every bit as pretty as natural pearls and are also found in different shapes. The difference is that the tiny irritant is artificially inserted into the mollusc, rather than making its way in naturally. PEARL HARVEST This is a very delicate and precise process needing expert care attention. Firstly, the oyster or muscle is opened very gently, just wide enough for the pearl to be reached. Specially made surgical tools are used to ensure the pearl is carefully removed and that no harm is done to the mollusk. This is really important because when a mollusk produces a high quality pearl farmers will want to use it again. MAKING PEARL JEWELLERY Pearls need no special cutting or treatments to show their true beauty. Before being made into pieces of jewellery, they undergo a long process. Having been carefully extracted from a mollusk they are soaked in a mild cleaning solution for a couple days, under fluorescent lighting, to remove any residue and enhance their shine. They are sorted according to their size, shape and colour then valued. Next an expert drills perfectly aligned holes into each one. Pearls being used for bracelets and necklaces are drilled all the way through, those destined for earrings are drilled half way through. No two pearls are exactly the same, so matching them up is a seemingly endless job for the experts who look at thousands of pearls to put them into matching groups. But, eventually they are ready to be threaded into ropes or strands, or set into precious metals to become beautiful gifts and tokens of special events. There could not be a lovelier stone to wear for a wedding.

BAROQUE PEARLS

A round pearl is considered to be a traditional pearl. All the other pearls with an irregular shape, which can be ovoid, curved, pinched, long or simply lumpy, are known as baroque pearls. Cultured saltwater examples are usually teardrop-shaped due to the use of a spherical irritant. They are extremely easy to make into the most gorgeous pieces of jewellery, because each one has its very own shape and size, and they are an ideal choice for bold women who want to look and feel special. Value wise they are slightly less than traditional pearls; since they are more easily found

MAKE UP Natasha focused on Jaelle’s bright eyes and beautiful smile to capture the look of a young, summer bride.

FLOWERS & DECORATIONS Alistair Floral Design created two exquisite bouquets and a sweet, summery white headdress for our bride, and provided charming flower-filled lanterns and arrangements that really complimented the location.

Behind the scenes HAIR Christian at MAF took advantage of Jaelle’s pretty profile to create two flattering styles which suited her perfectly.

ADVERTORIAL

The perfect wedding venue

Y

our wedding reception is one of the most important events you will ever host, so it is vital that you choose the very best reception venue you can find. You will naturally want somewhere that reflects you both as a couple; your interests, sentiments and ambitions. But you will also be thinking of your guests and looking for somewhere that will not only wow them but also be in an interesting, pleasant and comfortable environment. We are so lucky here, on our islands, because distances are relatively short, and nowhere is too difficult to reach, within reason. Location choices range from coastal to castle, and boho to baroque. You can be out in the country, or by the sea, or in the middle of a town or village. The setting can be ancient and atmospheric, or sleek and bang up to date. And almost all the local venues will work for both winter and summer weddings, although some are better suited to one or the other season. Think about how many guests you are inviting, some venues are especially attractive for a small, intimate wedding, others offer a welcome space for several hundred guests. The time of day the reception is being held also makes a difference; that and the setting of the venue could determine whether or not you will have a beautiful sunset view, you want. Here are a few points to consider, when making your final decision easier. Do you want a venue that includes a complete package or one where you are free to arrange your own decorations, entertainment, catering and cake etc? How far is the venue from where the wedding ceremony is taking place? What facilities are provided for the bride and her attendants? Is the venue suitable for children and easily accessible for guests with special needs? Is there plenty of parking? How attentive are the owners, management and staff of the venues you are looking at? If you feel that they consider your wedding is as important as you do, you can trust that everyone will be happy.

Warm receptions There is a growing trend for holding wedding receptions in locations connected with our past. Historic buildings, used centuries ago for everything from accommodation to defence, are proving to be magnificent settings in which to stage ceremonies, receptions or both. One such location is Villa Bighi, formally the Royal Naval Hospital Bighi. It is located in the southern coastal village of Kalkara, perched on high grounds. Villa Bighi was originally built to serve as the

summer residence for a Knight of the Order if St John, Fra Giovanni Bichi, and was repurposed by the British to serve as the Royal Naval Hospital. Following extensive restoration works on the grounds, Villa Bighi still maintains its 19th century neo-classical architectural beauty and has become one of the most sought after event venues, enjoying unobstructed and breath-taking views of the Grand Harbour and Valletta It is licensed for civil weddings and can hold up to 1,000 people standing and 600 seated banquet

style, depending on the choice of event spaces. There are facilities for the bridal party to rest or change, and for children. The venue is fully accessible for those with special needs. And there is plenty of street parking. It is important to note that at Villa Bighi the venue only is for hire so couples are able to choose their own caterers, bar facilities, entertainers and decorators, leaving them free to literately create the wedding of their dreams, in one of the most romantic locations imaginable.

THE COUPLE

Sue & Frank 29 April 2019 Sue Rossi, 53, and Frank Grima, 61, both self employed, were married in Tal-Karmnu Church, Valletta.

S

ue and Frank’s friendship goes back 25 years. About seven years ago it grew stronger and Frank proposed. This was so special for Sue and she was soon planning for and looking forward to their big day. The wedding theme was white and gold; all the way from the invitations, beautifully designed with a logo, by Sue’s friends Matthew and Georgenette from Icam, and the souvenirs, by The Cake Shop, to the church carpet, and the flowers, by Caroline, of Diva events, who understood exactly what Sue wanted and was responsible for both her bouquet and the décor needed to complement the wedding venue. »

I DO 27

A LOCAL CHURCH WEDDING For their wedding service Sue and Frank wanted Tal- Karmnu Church, in Valletta, because Frank is very devoted to our Lady to Sorrows and they are neighbours of the church, so they could not have chosen a more beautiful church to marry in. Paul Giordimaina provided the music, and Fr Alex Scerri held the ceremony; something the couple say they will never forget. Sue was escorted by her children, Valentina and Dean, who were happy to walk her up the aisle. She wore an ivory coloured dress in French lace, from Alamango, designed by long-time friends, Charles and Ron. “I trusted them, as I always do with my special occasions, and left it up to them to create a design for me. They know my style, and what I like most. They showed me the design which I loved”, said Sue. “They also managed to get me lovely shoes to match my gown, which I also fell in love with “, she added. As a bouquet Sue carried her favourite Cally lilies, created by Caroline, from Diva Events. The couple’s wedding rings were extra special. Frank‘s is very sentimental as it belonged to Sue’s late father. “When I see the ring on his finger it reminds me of my beloved father who I adored”, Sue said. She chose her own ring in white gold, from Vascas, to match her engagement ring. A HAPPY ‘INFORMAL’ RECEPTION Frank had a wish to have a pub style, reception/party and one of his projects, The Queen Victoria Pub, in Valletta, made a great and original reception venue and fitted theme of the wedding perfectly. DJ Nadine and saxaphonist Clive provided the music. Catering was in the hands of Michelle and James from James Caterers, who came up with a special menu and organised all their staff very elegantly; making sure all the guests were well served. Drinks were served directly from the staff at the Pub. The Wedding cake, also by James Caterers, was in five- layers all white, trimmed in gold and designed by Sue. »

30 I DO

The couple did not plan a first dance. Sue just wanted something different so they choose their favourite song Sweet Caroline and had a blast with everyone dancing with them. All couples have their personal wishes for their special day and Sue and Frank wanted to give a donation to a charity – Inspire, and encouraged their guest to do the same. Their dog Martini, who they call ‘it-tifel’, and who goes everywhere with them, was also included, in the church at the end of the ceremony. “We invited our closest friends who knew us well and also shared with us some beautiful moments. The comments were amazing I think everyone was waiting for this day”, the couple concluded.

Sue and Frank’s honeymoon was organised by ROCS Travel.

THE COUPLE

Victoria & Luke 24 November 2018 Victoria Schembri, 26, a sales advisor at Camilleri Catering, and Luke Muscat, 28, currently studying OIC Navigational Watch at the Maritime Institute, were married at Madonna Tal-Herba Chapel, Birkirkara.

“W

e met six years ago, when I was working at a call centre and Luke was between jobs. We instantly connected, we were friends at first and then the relationship evolved into something very special”, Victoria remembers. But within three months Luke went back to working on yachts, and was based abroad. They found spending months away from each other very hard, but managed the long distance because they knew they were made for each other and wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. In the sweetest and simplest proposal Luke took Victoria to the spot where they first kissed and proposed to her there. Then he took her to a favourite restaurant where to her surprise their families were waiting for them to celebrate! They sent out 400 invitations, designed by Foilplus, with a marbled grey background, silver lettering and blue decorations, to match Victoria’s bridesmaids’ dresses. They were quite simple and Victoria loved them. A WEDDING WITH A DIFFERENCE Victoria had been dreaming about her wedding day since she was a little girl. In fact, she was I DO’s cover girl for our November 2011 issue. She wanted a wedding with a difference and working in the wedding industry helped broaden her vision.”We had a Winter Wonderland theme and chose the colours blue, white and silver accordingly. We also enhanced our venue with loads of fairy lights, white sheers, white flowers and crystal chandeliers”, she explained. »

I DO 35

Also contributing to Victoria and Luke's special day were Justin Brincat, Natasha Polidano and Milù by Mimi.

The couple had known Fr Colin Apap for a long time and he made sure they had a wonderful and personal ceremony in the beautiful, small chapel of Madonna Tal-Herba Chapel, Birkirkara. Pamela, Glenn and Angela singing in the church brought out so much emotion, thanks to their beautiful voices! It was just what they had both pictured and wanted on the day! Victoria wore a mermaid dress with a low, detailed back and a beautiful train, by Alessandra Rinaudo. She carried a bouquet by Bjorn of Floreal, who also did the flowers in the church and venue. Instead of a veil she ordered a customised cape, adding more character to the dress and,

having fallen in love with the headdress her mother had worn 28 years before, she had it altered slightly, by SC Bridal Designs, to wear as her ‘something borrowed’. Luke rented his and the groomsmen‘s clothes from The Groom Collection. And they exchanged rings chosen to reflect their personalities. “I wanted mine to be modern and blingy, with little diamonds around, whereas Luke wanted his to be the thinnest and plainest possible since he’s not used to wearing any jewellery”, Victoria said. TOUCHES OF MAGIC For the reception, the Razzett L-Abjad‘s huge marquee, was transformed by A&S

into a magical venue full of white fairy lights, white gazebos, sheers, crystal chandeliers, blue uplighters. The beautiful cake, by Camilleri Caterers, which hung from the ceiling really was the cherry on top! There was also a glowing Cocktail bar by Damian’s Cocktails, plus wine, cheese and salumi table, an amazing variety of finger food and an International Bar, by Clayton Zahra. Luke is half English so Camilleri Caterers also provided a delicious English Carvery, along with a delicious sweet finale, – “one of the most important things to have for me since I am a chocoholic” Victoria admitted. »

During the reception the super Versatile Brass Band played. “The first dance was very special to us since we had Luke’s brother Joe Roscoe, Red Electrik’s lead singer, singing for us, after his touching speech. We danced to the song Still Into You, originally by Paramore“, the couple recalled. “For the father and daughter dance my father and I danced to the song Crazy Little Thing Called Love, since he is one amazing rock and roll dancer!” added Victoria. “After that we danced all night and even got on stage with Joe, J Anvil, Glenn

and Martina for a sing along!” For Luke the wedding was more about the ceremony: “Where, I said I promised my fiancée in front of my family and friends that I will stay true to her and spend the rest of my life with her”, he said. Victoria described the highlights of the evening, the emotion and the beautiful moment when they first saw each other at the church. “That’s a feeling that cannot be described! Honestly, the whole wedding was so much fun! We had so much time to enjoy

it with our friends and family since we also had an after party. The couple had been advised to relax and enjoy the day! “And that’s exactly what we did. We weren’t stressed at all, we did our best to organise every little detail and it was all in our suppliers’ hands. We trusted the suppliers we chose so there was no reason to panic. Clayton Zahra the Organizer was a great help as well. We literally sailed through the day because of him”, the couple remembered happily.

THE COUPLE

Jennifer & Pierre 29 June 2018 Jennifer Grima, 32, a primary teacher, and Pierre Attard, 33, a fraud and risk analyst were married at Knisja Tas-Salib Imqaddes, Zabbar.

T

hey had met four years earlier, at a local club, a few weeks before Jennifer was leaving for a threemonth study progamme in Northern Ireland. There was instant chemistry; both having the ‘travel bug’ brought them closer together. But Jennifer’s going abroad was a huge drawback. They decided to leave it to destiny and kept in touch with Pierre going over to visit. When Jennifer returned they decided to give the relationship a ‘trial run’. They were both in their late 20s, with steady social lives. Getting used to the commitments of a relationship wasn’t easy, and might have created some unnecessary stress at the beginning. However, we were both committed to getting to know each other and we managed to establish a mature relationship built on respect and a lot of trust, and to establish a balance between doing things we both like, and keeping our individual hobbies, the couple explained. »

Pierre proposed on November 16, 2016, during Jennifer’s graduation party. He was very excited about proposing in front of all her close family. But his surprise was nearly ruined by Jennifer’s fouryear-old nephew blurting out where the ring was hidden. No harm was done though, and the little boy gained the role of ring security guard. With the sudden loss of her father, six months before the wedding, Jennifer almost lost all hope of life in general. But Pierre was there for her and her family. So Jennifer was the creative mind behind the whole wedding. When she got an idea, she would call their planner, Dreemz Luxury Wedding Planners to give her advice on how to do it. She spent eight months designing original invitations to fit the wedding‘s travel theme; comprising boarding passes, postcards and cases, with ribbon, on flat parchmina paper, to create a vintage effect. AN INTIMATE CEREMONY The couple chose Knisja Tas-Salib Imqaddes, Zabbar, for their ceremony because Jennifer is from Zabbar and it was near the reception venue. They wanted as many of their guests as possible to attend the wedding Mass. Also, they felt it was small enough to create a homely feel. Music in the church was provided by Eleanor Cassar. Jennifer wore a fitted ivory and champagne dress that opened softly into a fish tail effect. The bodice had intricate beading and an illusion low back giving it a feminine and daring feel. It came from the couture collection by Eva Mariee Bridal Exclusive. Being a 180cm tall size 10, Jennifer wasn’t sure what style she wanted. “I knew it wasn’t going to be easy! As soon as I entered the shop, I was greeted by James, who asked me what I wanted. My answer was ‘mhux bajda, mhux traditional, style mhux tas-soltu.’ James instantly understood what I was looking for and as soon as he showed me the dress, it was love at first sight”, said Jennifer. Meanwhile, Pierre cut quite a dash in a suit and shoes from Natasha’s His and Hers. Jennifer’s wedding ring was actually an eternity ring, made from shiny white gold embedded with seven diamonds. »

I DO 43

Pierre’s was a matte and shiny white gold band. Both rings were engraved with the infinity sign, between the wedding date and the couple’s initials. TRAVEL INSPIRED RECEPTION Jennifer and Pierre wanted somewhere unique and original for their reception. “After discussing this with our wedding planner, we visited Bighi Esplanade and Gardens, Ex-Naval Hospital, Kalkara, and instantly fell in love with the building’s surroundings and views. Why hire an artificial backdrop when you can enjoy such breathtaking natural views of the Grand Harbour, Fort St Angelo and Valletta”, they explained.

A pre-wedding photo, taken at the airport and featuring Jennifer’s father’s precious flying possessions, was displayed at the entrance of the venue, which was beautifully decorated by Commander Jay to include a table with travel items such as luggage with flags, a box of postcards and a letter box for the guests to post the postcards into. The cake topper also echoed the theme, as did the cake, with a green plane and its trail matching the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses. There were also a number of chandeliers around the whole venue giving it a chic ambiance. The menu, by Corinthia Caterers, was designed specifically with the wedding theme in mind. »

There was food from around the world – from fish and chips, to wantons and Mexican burritos. Damian’s Cocktails served cocktails named to go with the theme, from behind a Maltese gallarija, which include Il-Maltija, made with Bajtra liquor. Jennifer and Pierre broke with at least one tradition by cutting the cake before the dancing began. And instead of a ballad for their first dance, they chose Something Just Like This, by Chainsmokers and Coldplay. At first only very close friends and family gathered around. “However, as soon as the music started, people rushed to see what we had to offer. There was a lot of screaming and shouting as we danced on through our choreographed song”, they remembered. The party then continued with up tempos and fusion offered by the full 18 piece Versatile Brass band and DJ Fusion. Jennifer and Pierre certainly heeded the best piece of pre wedding advice they were given: “The wedding will come and go, but the memories will never fade. Create something that your guests will keep talking about, years from now.” Following an intimate ceremony and an ‘international’ wedding reception in a striking location, the couple handed out small suitcases filled with potpourri as keepsakes and also gave a donation to the Hospice Movement. Then their married life began with an action-packed trip to Cambodia.

THE COUPLE

Rachel & Terence 12 May 2018 Rachel Cilia, 39, a stay-at-home mum, and Terence Corser, 42, a sales representative, were married in Zebbiegh Church.

N

ine years ago Rachel, who had always looked for a man who was quote: “Gentle, yet tough, kind hearted, funny, loving, sensitive and romantic“, met Terence. They soon knew they were made for each other. The couple each had a son from previous relationships, and went on to have a daughter and a son. »

I DO 49

A ROMANTIC PROPOSAL Terence’s most unusual proposal was in writing. “When he was in a hospital corridor, on his way to undergo an operation, he whispered to me, ‘there’s an envelope in the bedside table, go and open it.‘ To my astonishment I found the proposal in writing”, explained Rachel, who remembers crying in the corridor, full of mixed emotions. Instead of saying yes immediately, she organised a surprise party for Terence’s impending 40th birthday, and asked their friend Fr Antoine to come. At the party Rachel told Terence that she would gladly accept to marry him, and their rings were blessed at this ‘surprise’ engagement. WEDDING BLISS Their wedding theme was Storybook Romance Meets Phantom of the Opera, as they both love the show, and travel to London frequently to see it. They chose Zebbiegh Church for their service, so they could choose the time of the Mass themselves, thereby planning their wedding to the minute. The church was decorated with lanterns, white flowers and a red carpet. Several glass jars, decorated with lace and satin bows and containing candles, were put on the benches. Next to each one was a small personalised matchbox. Just before Rachel and Terence exchanged their vows, guests were asked to light their candle. They wanted to involve everyone in their celebration. The atmosphere was magical, and the candles made an extra souvenir for the guests at the church. Music in the church was from the angelic voices of ‘EnKor’, an amazing choir, all so talented, energetic and fun. Rachel chose a mermaid gown, from the Mon Cheri Collection, in ivory/champagne embroidered lace on tulle, over organza and satin. It had a hand-beaded lace bodice with a scalloped sweetheart neckline, dropped waist and low V at the back. Covered buttons, matching appliqués on the scalloped hemline, a chapel- length train and a matching embroidered cathedral length veil made it all perfect. “It was love at first sight. I felt great on the day”, Rachel remembers. Terence adds that JD Formal Wear made sure that he and all the groomsmen looked smart on the day. Their service was top notch. And the ladies in the wedding party all looked perfect too, in dresses by Cecile. For flowers Rachel chose a compact bouquet of ivory, amnesia and blush pink roses mixed with baby’s breath, with a vintage look to match the bridal party’s spring styles, from Flowers by Julie. And, of course, the couple exchanged rings. Both were white gold, from Vascas, a plain wedding band with a small diamond for Terence and a sparkly-all-over ring for Rachel. »

WELCOMING RECEPTION With 650 guests, the couple wanted to have somewhere safe in case of bad weather and thought that a palazzo with a beautiful garden would be perfect for their theme. Palazzo Nobile, and brilliant weather gave them the garden wedding they aimed for. The venue was decorated with loads of fjakkoli, chandeliers, warm white fairy lights and white sheers, with deep blue background lighting, by the garden walls. There was a fairy light curtain as a backdrop for the band and strobe lighting for the first dance and cutting of the cake. Music of the Night, by Andre’ Rieu, was played for their entry at Palazzo Nobile, and: “All I Ask of You by Josh Groban and Kelly Clarkson, accompanied by strobe, dry ice and synchronised fireworks. “Dancing on our day with the love of our lives to the music, and people we love, fireworks and sparklers. The feeling is indescribable”, was how Rachel described their first dance. The exquisite food was to die for, especially the Belgian chocolates table which everyone was still talking about long after the day. Catering was by Busy Bee, who also made the wedding cake which had its own, romantic starring role. As The Phantom of The Opera theme remix played, the follow spot on the cake table turned to strobe, the cake had a topper saying ‘One Love, One Lifetime’ and The Phantom of the Opera mask and a red rose, appeared on the dance floor. “This was all perfectly timed with the help of our amazing organiser Clayton Zahra, who co-ordinated this perfectly, together with the lighting engineer, Busy Bee staff, and band”, explained Rachel. As souvenirs, of their wedding Rachel and Terence had bookmarks matching the invitation, with the phrase ‘ Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness’, with a small antique gold metal key attached by a lace and satin string. They also gave out flavoured cigars and a photo booth picture. “We wanted to celebrate our love, our life together with the most important people in our lives. We dreamt about a magical night for both of us, and for all our guests. And so it was!“ the couple concluded.

THE COUPLE

Denise & Christopher 27 July 2018 Denise Apap, 23, a lawyer, and Christopher Pace, 30, a sales and customer care representative, were married, in a civil ceremony at Cittadella (St John’s Bastion).

D

enise and Chris met at a local feast. She was with her friends drinking and having fun, she caught sight of Chris for the first time. “We instantly looked at each other and I immediately felt butterflies and looked away”, she remembers. When Chris went over and offered Denise a drink they started talking. After meeting, again, unplanned, at a party, Denise went home and searched for Chris on Facebook. He, meanwhile sent her message which she instantly answered, telling him how adorable he was. »

I DO 55

They started talking every day, going on dates weekly and staying at each other’s places on weekends. Then started going steady; “That was one of the best decisions I made in my life. He really did make me feel happy”, said Denise. Chris adds: “I realised one day that my feelings for her had grown so much. From that moment I knew that she was the one with whom I wanted to spend the rest of my life.” Chris proposed on a rainy October day. “I was at home waiting for him and when he arrived he dropped on his knees and as soon as I saw him I started crying. We didn’t even say one word; I pulled him up and hugged him so much. Then we started kissing and he put the beautiful engagement ring on my finger”, said Denise. The couple sent out 200 wedding invitations, created by First Glance. They were simple and elegant, in two tiers with writing by a calligrapher, on a gold background.

A CEREMONIAL SETTING They had a civil ceremony, at Ċittadella, chosen because it’s the ancient Citadel of Gozo, and the island’s focal point since at least 1,500 BC, with a breathtaking 360degree panorama of Gozo’s hills, valleys, villages and churches, and right across the sea to Malta. They kept it formal and elegant with white flowers everywhere, including around a beautiful large arch, and a large white carpet. Flowers were from Flowers by George, and music by Cordia String Quartet. For her wedding, Denise wore an exquisite dress, designed especially for her by Mario Xkembri Texstyles. It was a fitted gown with an open back and decorated with elegant French lace. Mario used hand beading to make it unique and extra special. “The transparent sides and the long train made me feel comfortable, confident and chic as I walked down the aisle to marry the love of my life”, she said. Chris wore a suit from Cefai Formal Wear, shoes by Aldo and accessories

by Calvin Klein, to marry the girl he describes as: “My best friend and my soul mate.” As wedding bands are special for the couple because they are a forever promise, Denise chose a ring in 18 carat white and pink gold, embellished with sparkling chatons so it shines on all sides and gives an extra impact when worn with her engagement ring. Chris’s wedding band is a classic, comfortable 4mm wide with a high polished finish in a goeswith-anything style. A PERFECT RECEPTION Denise and Chris chose Ta Frenċ Restaurant for their reception, both for its charming setting with country views of Xagћra, Zebbuġ and Marsalforn valley, and for the decades of experience its staff have had. The couple felt that while the wedding was about celebrating their legal union, they knew that it was also very much about their guests’ comfort and enjoyment; so they got creative when decorating the venue. »

Also contributing to Denise and Chris’s special day was Carmelino Refalo Wedding Planner.

Everywhere was decorated with ground lanterns, beautiful chandeliers and fresh white flowers. There was a cake by Emanuel Rapa, a whiskey bar by Còctel Cantineros, and a cocktail bar by The Barman. As souvenirs the couple gave macaroons, by Whisk Macaroons and for wedding favours they thought of something both classic and unique – miniature whiskey bottles; Jack Daniels, Jameson for the men and Hennessy and Amaretto for the women. In addition to this, they presented cigars and sandalwood vintage hand fans And there was another, sweet touch. “Our wedding was different because we had a memory table of our son, whose name is Levi, who sadly passed away on May 9, at the age of three weeks. This table was decorated nicely with small blue flowers and crystals. We wanted to include him in our wedding because he is part of us. This table gave some sort of tranquillity and peace”, explained the couple. Music was by Cash and Band the music for their first dance was Perfect Symphony, by Ed Sheeran and Andrea Bocelli.”We chose this song because it’s very sentimental and it means a lot. This slow track is the best love song that one can choose, its perfect!” they said. And, it was one of the highlights of the wedding because everyone was amused. “For me Denise completes me in every single way and from the beginning I knew I wanted to marry her”, Chris confirmed. And Denise added: “We love each other more than words can describe and we have faith in our ability to get through life together.”
