his me of year is like a magnifying glass. Christmas and the turn of the new year intensify whatever’s good or bad in your life or environment. If you’re in good health, you want to enjoy things. If you’re facing health problems, nothing feels right. If you and yours are well, health is probably the last thing on your mind. If you’re not, it’s all you can think about. If you’re sad and lonely, it feels worse. If you’re blessed with family and friends, you’re in the mood to celebrate. If you’re feeling out of sorts, turn to our feature on page 20. If you’re partying, turn to page 32. If you’ve got the sniffles, see page 34. And if you’re s ll wondering what to give anyone for Christmas, think of their health and well being. We’ve got some ideas for you on page 8.. As 2016 draws to a close, we want to thank everyone who has helped to make A&H a success. This will be our last issue this year. We’ll be back in February 2017

QUIZ
ARE YOU A GRINCH? LOVE IT OR HATE IT, CHRISTMAS CAN’T BE IGNORED.
1
On your way to work, the breakfast show presenter plays a Christmas carol. You:
3
i. turn up the volume and sing along heartily; ii. search for different songs using Bluetooth; iii. switch off the radio because you prefer the noise of traffic to the sound of Christmas carols.
i. going shopping on Christmas Eve is the best way to celebrate; ii. you have a clear idea of what you want and will buy; iii. the only presents you buy are for your parents, just so you won’t feel guilty.
2
At the office, your colleagues put up Xmas decorations in the first week of December. You: i. help out immediately; ii. appreciate their effort but are too busy to help; iii. refuse the little piece of holly your desk neighbour wants to attach to your PC.
Christmas is only two days away and you still haven’t done any shopping because:
4
It’s the first week of November and shops are already decorated with Christmas lights. Your reaction is:
7
On the 6th of January, you:
ii. “It doesn’t affect me at all”; iii. “it’s so annoying and boring”.
5
Your family is discussing Christmas Day lunch. You: i. offer to organise it at your own place; ii. agree with whatever decision the majority takes; iii. say nothing, already planning to spend the day alone at home.
6
For you, a Christmas staff party is:
i. the right opportunity to meet all colleagues informally; ii. a well-deserved treat after a year’s work; iii. free flowing alcohol and delicious food.
i. “It’s so exciting”;
i. suffer post-Christmas blues; ii. get back to your routine; iii. breathe a deep sigh of relief.
8
Speaking about Christmas makes you:
i. feel like a child again; ii. realise how practical you are; iii. bored and pathetic.
9
Listening to the Nativity story,
i. makes you nostalgic for your childhood days; ii. reminds you of the Bible films often shown on TV; iii. is just like reading another childhood fairytale.
YOUR ANSWERS Mostly i’s You can assume the role of Santa’s helper because you love Christmas and look forward to the last two months of the year. As soon as Hallowe’en is over, you enjoy going through streets which are already decorated for Christmas. At work, you can’t wait to encourage your colleagues to start decorating and planning the annual Christmas party. Your enthusiasm can be contagious. Don’t be ashamed of sharing it with others around you. Christmas is all about happiness, peace, love, family and friends. 6
December 2016
Mostly ii’s You still enjoy this period but you also think that some people’s attitudes are fake and will revert to their normal state once the Christmas lights are switched off. You see Christmas as a materialistic feast which is losing rapidly its true significance. But taking a negative attitude won’t save the value of Christmas and giving up will definitely make Christmas lose its magic. If you’re tired of materialism but not the magic, do something to spread goodwill.
Mostly iii’s You really are a Christmas Grinch. For you, Christmas is just another day and has lost its main significance. This might be because of an unpleasant experience which changed your attitude. You might also be bored with the way Christmas has been transformed into a business and a frenetic rush to buy and consume. No one can change your mentality don’t impose your negative thoughts on others. Avoid passing sarcastic comments, especially in the presence of children and other people who are enthusiastic about Christmas. Enjoy their company, even if you don’t share their enthusiasm.

WISH LIST
Uncommon PRESENCE IF YOU’RE DESPERATE SEEKING LAST MINUTE GIFTS TO DELIGHT RECIPIENTS AND MAKE THEM APPRECIATE YOUR EFFORT, TRY SOMETHING A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT. COMPILED BY ANNA MARIA GATT
a
s much as it is enjoyable, Christmas shopping can be a massive headache too, especially if you have to buy gifts for the same people every year. During the year, these same people have received gifts from you on their birthday and maybe on other special occasions. In the lastminute rush, take the time to think about whether the person receiving the gift really wants or needs it. Do not buy presents just for the sake of buying. Asking the recipient what he or she really wants can save you time and money.
• Family fitness packages – Some fitness centres offer family deals and packages. Presenting a package to your closest friends and relatives will give them the opportunity to spend more quality time together during the coming year while becoming healthier. • Home gym equipment – When invited to dinner at friends’ homes, we usually take bottles of wine, sweets or small gifts. Why not try something different this year? Get together with the other guests to buy home gym equipment for your host. Equipment needn’t be bulky or break the bank. You can find something to fit any budget, which can be easily stored in a garage or box-rooms and which can be used by the whole family. Make sure to include a user manual. 8
December 2016
• Treatment vouchers – Everyone loves being spoilt, so vouchers for pampering treatments make great gifts. Make things easier for people with erratic schedules by choosing vouchers with flexible closing dates. For someone who never gets around to taking time out for themselves, a fixed date voucher might be a better option. • Give the gift of time – If you buy a fixed date voucher for a busy person, step in with an offer to granny-sit or baby-sit on that date, so there won’t be any excuses for not going. The same can be said for other people on other occasions. Everyone can help out someone else occasionally, but you can gift a regular block of time to free up someone who never gets time
Do not buy presents just for the sake of buying.
for himself or herself. Sometimes, all a person might want is to be in your thoughts and to regularly enjoy your company. A promise to write, call or visit more often can be worth more than anything money can buy.
• Unusual ingredients – People who are passionate about cooking will enjoy a colourful, recipe book accompanied by a box of hard-to-find ingredients. If you know that your friend is passionate about oriental or Indian or Mediterranean dishes, why not prepare a hamper with these special ingredients which might not be found in all shops? Or put together a box of cooking equipment or cake decoration items for someone who loves being creative in the kitchen. • Sportswear – Sportswear is fashionable as well as functional. Even young children like sportswear because it’s trend. For anyone who practices sports and dance regularly, the right gear is a must. Vouchers for sports shops or dance schools are welcome gifts. For hard-to-please teenagers, a course of sports training or coaching sessions can be an ideal gift. • Club together – Get together with siblings or friends to buy shared gifts. Pooling your gift budget can be just as fun if it helps make a recipient’s dream come true. It can save you time and hassle, too if you share the gift buying process.

w
e had agreed to meet on a Saturday morning. I phoned Nikki to say I would be running ten minutes late, adding that I would have been later had I had breakfast. I’m not quite sure why I shared that titbit but I’m certainly glad I did. “Would you like me to prepare something for you?” came the prompt reply. I could feel myself blush furiously, thanking all that’s holy that Bluetooth doesn’t come with video – yet. “Do you eat everything? How about an omelette?” she said. Having met Nikki before and knowing that dairy is not on the cards for her either (I’m lactose intolerant myself) I squealed out a delighted, if somewhat embarrassed “oohhh, yes please!”

She ate what was offered – whole deep fried frogs, worms and crickets. That takes some guts.

REAL
LIVES
Within minutes I was being greeted by two adorable family dogs and ushered into the kitchen, where she offered a nice hot cup of tea from her mother’s interesting selection of leaves. She busied herself making an omelette. Before I could even say “that looks perfect” I was tucking into a restaurant-standard omelette – light, fluffy, golden yellow, and with a side of mushrooms, coloured peppers and mixed leaves. Still impressed at the skill of this twenty-year old, and wondering if she would teach me how to flip an omelette and slide the semi-circle onto a plate without breaking it half way, I murmured approvingly as I ate. She busied herself dehydrating kale in preparation for the opening of Sanya, a vegan cafe in Naxxar’s newest retirement home. Plate dutifully cleared, plated pleasures over, we got down to business. How did Nikki get into cooking? And why does she take such a healthy slant in her cuisine? Usually twentyyear olds are busy studying during the week and getting plastered on the weekend. Yet here she is, the youngster whose Facebook page Naturally Nourished by Nikki shares foodie tips, recipes and pictures of the most incredible healthy dishes. Was she always like that? Nikki was very close to her grandmother, who lived a stone’s throw away and would visit regularly. As a young teen she’d spend afternoon tea time with her nanna, sipping cups of tea sweetened with evaporated milk and so many teaspoons of sugar I daren’t write the amount. Tea came with biscuits and Nikki had those too. Chocolate is still her favourite and she’s a self confessed chocaholic. As time went by, growing pains seemed to settle around her stomach in the form of cramps. Out went the frozen pizza and all foods teens like, as the first thing a doctor had said was “cut out wheat”. Unfortunately, wheat and gluten work their way into so many things that Nikki’s cramps and bloating also came when she didn’t eat bread but ate things like chicken with soy sauce. Soy sauce is not gluten-free, as many a coeliac has found out the hard way. During this time she put on a lot of weight as she was eating a lot of gluten-free products and especially gluten-free pasta.

This is full of additives but as she was new to this regime, it was not something she was aware of. During her Alevel year, away in the UK, she decided to read up on different conditions and health implications. Google was her best friend and she realised 16
December 2016
that eating well was the answer. She stopped coffee, allowing herself only a cup a day, and exercised regularly. Her digestive system settled down, meaning that her IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) was also under control. It was during this time that she was so determined to pass her exams with flying colours that she exercised her brain with Sudoku, and memory word searches. Her mobile phone was switched off at 9pm, lights out and bedtime were at ten. Operation Focus was put into gear. Fortunately for Nikki, she is very sporty and she took part in the interschools sports events. Athletics, handball, football, gym – she did them all. She competed in a netball tournament with her school too. To the young woman who sailed in the Small Nations Games in 2009, this was nothing. Till today, her sporty and adventures nature takes her to far flung countries. In the past year she’s lived in Australia, done voluntary work in Africa, and travelled around Asia. Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India and that part of the world not only intrigue her and her adventurous spirit, but also appeal to her culinary side. Although she is vegetarian, she is not averse to trying new things. When she and boyfriend George were recently invited to eat typical foods by locals in Cambodia, this girl didn’t say NO
thank you or wrinkle her nose in distaste. She ate what was offered – whole deep fried frogs, worms and
crickets. That takes some guts. She’s travelled closer to home too. Many European countries have a great café culture. Ever organised, she checks out the good vegan cafes and eats her way through the menu with George’s help. I’m reliably informed that he’s quite pleased to be her food guinea pig, especially when she’s creating new recipes and there’s vegan deliciousness in the offing. Nikki says he’s very motivating, which can only be a good thing. Even if you’re not vegan, good food is good food, and I, for one, wouldn’t refuse it. Nikki tells me more about the new project at Sanya. She’s going to prepare raw granola, which will be served with homemade vegan yoghurt, and raw soups. All food will be completely organic, mostly raw, plant based and seasonal. There’s so much passion in her voice that it comes across in her food. Our interview over, I leave reluctantly as being surrounded by good, imaginative food, tea, a lovely young woman and a seaview is as close to heaven as one can get. But the kale is ready…and so am I.

SEASONAL FAVOURITES HOW TO ENJOY TRADITIONAL XMAS FOOD WITHOUT THE GUILT
t
raditionally, a Xmas table groans under the weight of enough food to feed an army, lunch lasts all afternoon and segues seamlessly into dinner, and you swear that your diet will start tomorrow. Never mind all that. The choice is not between fasting and feasting. Aim for a happy medium instead.
TURKEY Turkey contains high-quality proteins so it can provide essential amino acids. The downside is that turkey meat is very fatty, though the amount of saturated fat is lower than that of red meat. Not all turkey meat contains the same amount of fat. Dark turkey meat contains around twice as much fat as white turkey meat, with a greater proportion of saturated fat. However, the cholesterol level of white meat is only slightly lower than that of dark meat. The fat content of both types of turkey meat is comparable to that of other meats. A serving of white turkey meat contains the same amount of fatty cholesterol as lean beef. The fatty cholesterol content of dark turkey meat is about the same as that of pork or lamb. Dark meat is low in sodium and is a good source of phosphorous and zinc. It also contains selenium. Light meat is also low in sodium. It is a good source of vitamin B6 and phosphorous and it is a very good source of selenium and niacin. Both types of meat are an excellent source of protein so, if chosen and cooked well, and eaten in moderation, turkey meat can be part of a good diet.
8 TURKEY NOTES
1 2
Choose light meat over dark meat. It has less fat.
Leg meat has the least amount of fat. Breast meat has less fat than back meat. In all cases, the lighter meat is less fatty than the dark meat.
3
Raw meat should be refridgerated or frozen unless it's cooked immediately. If you've bought prepackaged unfrozen meat, remove it from its wrapping and rinse it thoroughly before storing it. If you're going to use the meat within a day or so, store it in a covered dish in the fridge. If it's going to be a while before you use it, bag it and freeze it.
18
December 2016
4
If you have the space for it, freeze the bird whole rather than in parts. It'll keep better and for longer. A whole turkey can be frozen for up to 12 months. Turkey parts can only be kept frozen for up to six months.
5
Most meat bacteria are on the skin rather than in the flesh. Poultry therefore carries a larger amount of bacteria as it's usually sold with the skin on. Beef and pork may have a few hundred bacteria per square centimeter. Poultry with the skin on will have several thousand.
6
Reduce the amount of fat in the meat by removing the skin
before cooking and cutting away any excess lumps of fat. To avoid the meat drying out during cooking, wrap it in foil.
7
When cooking parts, rather than a whole bird, grill the meat rather than frying it. When roasting a whole bird, put a drip rack at the bottom of the roasting dish to allow fat to drip off.
8
When making turkey broth, remove the excess fat by skimming the surface of the soup as it cooks. Once the soup cools, skim the fat globules off the surface

PUMPKIN
Pumpkins are packed with healthgiving, age-defying nutrition that helps to boost your immune system. Like carrots, their colour gives them away. That orange tint is due to betacarotene, an antioxidant that, when absorbed, is converted to vitamin A. Anti-oxidants help to prevent cancer by mopping up the free radicals that pollute your system. They are also agedefying, helping to reduce the degenerative effects of time.
They’re low in saturated fat, very low in cholesterol and sodium and provide a host of vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, C, E and B6, Folate, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, thiamin and niacin, potassium, copper, riboflavin and manganese. You also get a good dose of dietary fibre, which is essential for a healthy digestive system. Pumpkin has high water content, so it makes an ideal snack, giving you fewer calories, weight for weight, than, say, bread or biscuits. Remove the pumpkin seeds before cooking the pumpkin flesh but don’t throw them away. They contain their own share of nutrition including iron, amino acids (protein builders), zinc and fibre. Their nutritional value is higher if they are eaten raw but shelling raw seeds is fiddly so, if you prefer, you could dry roast them in their shells to protect the kernels from burning and make the shells easier to remove.
QUICK FIXES Dry roasted pumpkin
Lightly brush a roasting pan with a slick of olive oil. Spread out the pumpkin chunks in an even layer, sprinkle with ground cinnamon and nutmeg and roast in a hot oven till soft, but firm rather than mushy.
chopped sage leaves. You can vary the flavour of the soup by substituting chilli pepper flakes for the sage leaves, or give it a seasonal twist by stirring in a spoonful of cinnamon and nutmeg rather than herbs.
Cider pumpkin drink
Pumpkin seeds
Dry roast the pumpkin using baking paper, rather than oil, to prevent it sticking and without the nutmeg and cinnamon. Allow the pumpkin to cool then whizz it in a blender with apple cider for an unusual drink.
Roasted, shelled pumpkin seeds can be used in a variety of ways, either whole, chopped or ground. Sprinkle a handful of chopped seeds into a bowl of pumpkin soup to add flavour and texture, toss whole seeds into a leafy salad, or mix them into a roast casserole. For a different kind of salad dressing, grind pumpkin seeds with a clove of garlic and parsley and mix it into some good quality olive oil. Add a dash of lemon, if preferred.
Pumpkin soup Simmer pumpkin chunks with a cupful of home made vegetable stock until properly cooked. Blend to a fine puree and stir in a few crushed and
CRANBERRIES
commonly considered 'low'. Cranberries help relieve cystitis and help prevent urinary tract infections by preventing bacteria from sticking to the lining of the urinary tract. The antioxidants and other phytonutrients in the fruit can help prevent cancer and heart disease.
The upside Cranberries are very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. They are also a good source of Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol) and Vitamin K, and a very good source of dietary fibre, Vitamin C and manganese. They contain beta carotene which, along with Vitamins C and K, is a known anti-inflammatory nutrient, and traces of calcium and iron. Dietary fibre is a key factor in preventing bowel problems. You can up your daily intake from zero to 100% with home made muesli topped with cranberries (see quick fix recipes). The estimated glycaemic load of a standard cupful
WARNING
Eating turkey meat will increase the amount of cholesterol circulating in your system. If you are on a low cholesterol diet, take your doctor's advice about whether to include turkey meat.
STORAGE Cooked cranberries can be kept for up to a month in a closed, refridgerated container. Frozen cranberries will keep for up to a year if stored in airtight bags.
The downside
of chopped, raw cranberries (approximately 110g) is 2. As a rule of thumb, a glycaemic load below 10 is
Cranberries are high in carbohydrates, which may increase blood sugar to undesirable levels, if consumed in large amounts. If you are on a diabetic diet, consult your doctor about safe levels of cranberries in your diet. Canned cranberries contain preservatives. The healthier option is deep-chilled or fresh-frozen cranberries.
QUICK FIXES Homemade cranberry juice Making your own juice means no preservatives. Just whizz a jugful of cranberries in a blender, strain the juice into a jug and keep chilled. Serve chilled and mixed with soda water.
Cranberry shake Make up a cup of cocoa using skimmed milk and dark chocolate, then blend in a handful of cranberries, a few flakes of orange zest and a quarter teaspoon of honey. Serve immediately.
Breakfast muesli Make up your own muesli by mixing together oatmeal,
bran and pumpkin seeds. Then stir in a cupful of cranberries and top with fresh yoghurt. If you prefer a warm breakfast, warm the yogurt by giving it a quick blast in a microwave oven before pouring it over your muesli.
Warm cranberry fruit salad Mix together a half cup each of cranberries, golden raisins, dried apples and apricots. Simmer gently for five minutes in a saucepan with a cupful of freshly brewed Earl Grey tea then allow the fruit to absorb all the liquid. Serve warm with a sprinkling of orange zest and powdered cinnamon.

CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS HIGHLIGHTS MEMORIES OF ABSENT LOVED ONES EVEN MORE DISTINCTLY, BUT HAPPINESS CAN STILL BE FOUND, SAYS MARIKA AZZOPARDI
i
f you are excited at the thought of Christmas time, start dreaming about it even as you suntan in July, if your toes are tingling as you plan this year's version of your very personalised Christmas tree, just flip the page over and read something else. Then this little bit of reading is not for you, especially if you are the kind of person who has to jam pack weeks 50-52 with parties, drinks, nativity plays and pantos, dinners, breakfasts and all the necessary in-betweens. This piece is for those who have developed a lacklustre attitude towards Christmas, who dread the mere thought of it and who cannot wait till all the merriment is over. If those words ring true, then you are in my league and will fully understand what my rant. It is not so much about the religious meaning which was once the whole point or celebrating Christmas. Rather, it is the bandwagon I feel pushed onto in the lead up to December 25th and beyond to the New Year. If you feel as I do, just know that you are not some quirk of nature. You are one of many and perhaps you will recognise yourself in my words and relate to them. Christmas can be a happy time, but not for everybody. Not everyone can feel jolly and sweet, not everybody is ready to party, dress up to the nines and is inclined to have only a great lot of fun. For some, Christmas can become equal to the very essence of deep melancholy. Amazingly enough, what is touted as the happiest season of all, can become a period of dreaded sadness, a slice of time one would rather do without.

VIEWPOINT It tends to happen as your life goes on. Most people start off loving Christmas. In normal average family circumstances, the feast is a happy opportunity to visit, share good food, plan meals, buy and receive gifts, send greetings, shop till you drop and eat all the sweets you avoided since before summer. And there are the added perks. Nothing beats the look on children's faces as they help with the decorations, the tree and its baubles, the fairy lights, their questions about and playing around the crib, their anticipation of the arrival of that huge yet ephemeral fellow, good old Father Christmas. Then there’s watching them open the wrappings on their gifts - their excitement, cute expressions and reactions to unexpected presents, their enthusiasm to carry all the boxes themselves and help pack the car to take all the goodies back home, their taking to the pudding rather than the cake, their amazement at all the food, sweets, and chocolate... The bounty of it all is another reason to love Christmas, if you’re inclined to do so. Then comes a point in life when Christmas celebrations don't happen
anyway and, if they do, they do not make much of a ruffle any more. That’s the time in life when Christmas celebrations depend on you and you alone, when it is uniquely up to you to make the effort to dig out the tree and the baubles, the crib and the 'pasturi' and do it all yourself, knowing full well that you will have to undo it all in a few weeks time, all by yourself. Perhaps there is nobody in particular you would like to see or invite over. Perhaps there actually is nobody in your life any more. When life knocks you down, you tend to lose that readiness to spend your time and energy on something like that. After the umpteenth knock on the head you get staggered to the
point where you couldn't care less if you eat turkey, boiled egg or a dry sandwich at Christmastime. Unfortunately there are those who are ill, even at Christmas. Life can be unfair, but there it is. Ill health takes no note of festivities. The one ray of light for those who are ill at Christmas is their hope that perhaps, just maybe, next year, they will get better. Yet for a person who loves to party hard, being stuck in a bed over Christmas can be worse than torture. And it can be just as difficult for the relatives who have to troop to and from hospital with worry on their mind, while everybody else spends time in more pleasant circumstances. That is one kind of confinement.
Letting happiness take over is not easy but when it happens, everything is tinged with that bit of pink
There are others, varied and diverse, but all boil down to some form or other of isolation. There are the old and the weary, who will be further hampered from going out because of cold and wet weather. Spending Christmas away from loved ones who have passed on or who will not be returning home any time soon, is perhaps the bitterest pill to swallow. Looking at that empty chair, empty room, reminiscing about what he or she would have done, said, bought or baked...The very essence of Christmas highlights memories of absent loved ones even more distinctly. Well it is hard, very hard, and yet, as the saying goes, time will heal - and you'd better believe it. After the depths of sadness are touched on, it is somewhat amazing to find that, yes, time does work miracles. Some months or years down the line, as December approaches, you may find yourself looking at new decorations in the shops and lingering that much longer to look closer. You stop to note the lady in front of you at the supermarket till, hoarding the glazed cherries, the bags of flour, the raisins and all. And you remember it was what you haven't done in ages bake a cake for Christmas. You look at the shops and actually like what you see, the red dresses, the glitter and the funny hats to party in. You meet an old friend most unexpectedly and find yourself accepting an invitation without a flinch. It is just such absolutely overwhelming periods in our lives that help us grow in empathy, patience and in the understanding that we are all, after all, prey to the same roller coaster of emotions that take control of our lives. Letting happiness take over is not easy but when it happens, everything is tinged with that bit of pink. You may never be the same person again, you may never party as hard as you used to, but you will once again find amusement in the petty things which you previously disregarded because you were too busy feeling dejected. And that, after all, is the spirit of Christmas. Let those who want be merry and do their utmost to capture the moment. It might be the only time of year they are allowed to do just that.

young or infirm. Many children turn up to school with a streaming cold and fever. Apart from them infecting their classmates and teacher, they feel uncomfortable themselves. If your child is sick, think twice before sending him or her to school. Washing your hands helps to prevent germs spreading, especially after blowing your nose or
‘catching’ a cough or sneeze. Sneezing into the crook of your elbow will help prevent germs spreading while also keeping your hands clean. Carers of young babies can protect infants by wearing a disposable mask themselves. The mask will help prevent transmission of cold and flu microbes to the child. Disposable masks can be found in the baby goods area of most pharmacies.

SEASONAL
SYMPTOMS
FLU VACCINATION Colds are caused by over 100 types of virus. You can reduce the chances of catching the flu by taking the annual vaccine. It won’t protect you against the latest flu virus, but it will reduce your chances of picking up established forms of the disease. Vaccination against flu is recommended for anyone in a vulnerable group, i.e. small children and the elderly, as well as people of all ages whose immune system is weak. Babies are especially prone to complications if they catch the flu virus but vaccination is not possible until the child is at least six months old. If caregivers and other members of the same household are immunised, it will help insulate babies against infection. Flu can cause complications in children aged between 6 months and 5 years. Annual vaccination can help build up their immunity. Other high risk groups who should consider having the annual flu jab are those aged 65 years or over, and anyone with chronic health problems such as asthma or other respiratory problems, heart disease or a weak immune system, such as cancer patients. As with young babies, caregivers and members of the same household of high-risk persons should also have the flu vaccine annually. This will minimise the risk of them contracting the virus and then passing it on.
WHEN TO CALL A DOCTOR A common cold or the flu will go away if you get proper bed rest and keep yourself well hydrated and nourished. See a doctor if your symptoms worsen, or if you notice any unusual symptoms, including the following: • • • • • • • • •
26
a prolonged or high fever a cold lasting over 10 days earache seizures unusual lethargy wheezing, or an inability to breathe properly bluish skin colour insufficient intake of fluids pain or pressure in the chest.
December 2016
IS IT A COLD OR IS IT THE FLU? A cold usually manifests itself in the form of sneezing, stuffiness or a runny nose, sometimes also accompanied by a slight fever in adults or older children, and a higher fever in babies or toddlers. Somebody who has a cold may also have other symptoms, such as a sore (though not red) throat, a headache, a cough or watery eyes. Within a couple of days, any nasal secretion from a cold usually becomes thicker and changes colour, though this is
no reason to administer antibiotics. In the case of flu, one usually feels generally unwell, a feeling that seems to come on suddenly. The feeling is usually accompanied by aches and pains. Babies and toddlers normally run a high fever, ache all over and are less energetic than usual. Other symptoms may also be present. After two to four days, the aching feeling of being unwell starts to wane and and respiratory symptoms kick in.
7 WAYS TO RELIEVE SYMPTOMS There are no cures for the common cold or the flu. Treatment is geared towards symptomatic relief. Bed rest, drinking plenty of fluids and eating several small, light meals, will help your body concentrate on healing itself by fighting the infection.
1
Fluids should be clear and preferably sugarfree and caffeine-free to avoid any diuretic effect. If you are running a fever, you body will dehydrate faster than usual, so drink more water than you normally do. The best fluid to prevent dehydration is pure water. If the taste is too bland, add a twist of lemon. Freshly made, warm chicken broth can also help keep you hydrated, and the steam can help clear a stuffy nose.
2
Rest as much as possible, especially if you are running a fever. Fighting an infection is energy draining. When you start to feel a bit better, it’s tempting to get back to your normal, active routine right away but resting will help you recover faster.
3
Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking, and don’t go to enclosed, crowded places.
4
To relieve a sore throat, gargle with warm, salty water. It will soothe the discomfort and help wash away a few infective microbes. Sucking on a throat lozenge can help to ease discomfort.
5
Help clear a young baby’s blocked nose by using saline drops and a nasal aspirator. You’ll find both products in the baby section of most pharmacies.
6
Ask your pharmacist for an over-the-counter remedy for cold and flu symptoms. Don’t just ask for a product by name. Remedies sold over the counter may interact with other types of medication so you need to ask your pharmacist for advice. Some symptom remedies contain paracetamol, for instance. That means you can’t then take paracetomol tablets if your headache persists.
7
Use a menthol inhaler or balm. If a child is to young to use one, or simply does not like the cold sensation of a menthol balm on his/her chest, dab some on the corners of their pillow so that they will inhale the fumes whichever way they turn their head.
CHILD
DEVELOPMENT
THE TABLET EPIDEMIC DAYNA CLARKE ON WHY YOUR CHILD NEEDS REAL WORLD INTERACTION RATHER THAN SCREEN TIME
e
very day children are drawn to shiny, responsive screens that light up or move when they touch them. No doubt that you have also discovered that an electronic portable tablet can captivate your child during car journeys, long waits at the doctors’ or in restaurants, offering you a quiet break as they are absorbed into a digital world. Recent news reports said that France and Taiwan have both banned digital television aimed at children under three years, and Taiwan has made it illegal for a child under two to play with any smart phone or device, an offence that carries a fine of 1,000 euros. Is it time we questioned the impact of screen time on children in Malta?
Let us take a closer look at the use of screens and speech delays to see how all those screens affect your little one’s language development.
What is screen time? Screen time refers to any time that your child spends with an active screen in front of their face. This includes television, cinemas, smart phones, tablets, computers, video
games, and DVD players in the car.
So what’s the worry? It’s well established that children learn to talk and communicate through interactions with other people. Historically, that’s the way it has always been and despite any new technology that comes our way, this fact will remain. The first few years of your child’s life are fundamental to

their language development and, once that window closes, it becomes much harder for them to learn and develop language skills. This is why it’s harder for you to learn a foreign language as an adult. Every minute that your child spends in front of a screen is one less minute spent learning from your interactions or practicing their interactions with you. Screen time takes away from time that could (and should) be spent on person-to-person interactions.
So what about those amazing apps or videos that are supposed to teach your child vocabulary, or sign language, or to read? Vocabulary and reading are important parts of communication. However, they are a very small part December 2016

DEVELOPMENT
of a much bigger picture. Communication is about the whole package of interacting with others, and turn taking. The speaker responds to the listener’s body language and responses to change and adapts what they are saying. The listener uses non-verbal cues to gain deeper meaning from the speaker’s message, such as facial expression and body language. There is so much more going on than just the list of vocabulary that can be gained. Videos do not replace person-toperson interactions for teaching language or communication. Researchers are beginning to publish more and more studies about the detrimental effects of screen time on language development. A recent study by Chonchaiya and Pruksananonda found that children who began watching TV before 12 months and who watched more than two hours of TV per day, were six times more likely to have language delays. Another study found that children who watched more than two hours of TV per day had increased chances of low communication scores. Increasingly, research shows that watching TV early and frequently increases your child’s chances of having a speech delay. This could mean late talking and/or problems with language in school later in life. Increased screen time has also been linked to attention problems, shortterm memory problems, and reading problems, all of which can feed into your child’s ability to learn language as well. When it comes to children and electronic tablets, your best bet is to follow the guidelines that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has set regarding other screen time. The AAP recommends no more than two hours of screen time (such as TV, computers, and video games) per day for children two and older, and ideally no screen time at all for children younger than two.
My child is addicted to screens. How can I remove them? If your child is highly addicted to screen time, it’s unreasonable to believe that you’ll be able to get him or her to stop outright. Start by setting 30
December 2016
If your child is highly addicted to screen time, it’s unreasonable to believe that you’ll be able to get him or her to stop outright. some rules and if your child is old enough to understand, talk about why you are limiting screen time. You can try limiting the maximum number of minutes the child is in front of a screen per day. Or, you could limit the times that he is allowed to use a screen (for example, only between 14:00 and 16:00). You could also set boundaries on what types of screens your child is allowed to watch, such as what shows or what devices. Start off by only limiting your child’s screen time slightly. Then, gradually increase the limits until you have reached the maximum desired amount. Also, make sure you replace the screen time with an alternative activity.
What can I do with my child instead of screen time? Screen use should not overrule other toys, games, physical activity, creative free play, and face-to-face social interaction. After all, a screen offers a limited sensory environment and no physical output. Your child can’t feel an app the way they can feel a stuffed animal or dress-up clothes. They can’t smell an app in the way you can smell the cakes you bake together. They can’t hold and manipulate an app the way they can hold and stack blocks of Lego. They can’t run with an app the way they can play outside in the fresh air, and they can’t connect with an
app the way they can when they hug you. All of these real-world activities offer rich opportunities for your toddler to use their body, experience their environment and human relationships. So while you don’t need to feel guilty about letting them use your tablet in moderation, make sure it’s just one of many activities they get to learn from, explore, and enjoy. Keep in mind it’s important for you to put away your screens when you interact with your child as well. Put down your smartphone – work emails and Candy Crush can wait. The most important factor is that you replace screen time with quality time with you or another caring adult. That will help ease the transition. It’s natural that your child will resist the lack of screen time at first, but keep in mind that you are doing them a huge favour by limiting their exposure and creating wonderful new experiences that will open their minds, improve language development, and maybe even expose them to some new hobbies or interests that they may not have otherwise discovered.

a
nyone who hasn’t been locked up in an alcohol-free home for a lifetime has, at some time or other, seen the effects to total drunkenness. No one who’s passed out on the floor, possibly in a puddle of their own vomit, is in a fit state to get into a driver’s seat any time soon.
DRINK DRIVING IS NOT DRUNK DRIVING, AT LEAST NOT IN THE ORDINARILY UNDERSTOOD SENSE.
If you’re on your feet, feeling sober and surrounded by friends too drunk to talk, you’re responsible for getting everyone home. You can walk, talk, find your car keys and your car. That means you can drive safely, right? Well, no, you’re wrong. Your ability to drive safely doesn’t depend on what kind of alcohol you drink. It depends on how much alcohol you drink. Alcohol inhibits your ability
car owners who drive themselves. If you’re going out, plan your transport beforehand. Don’t tell yourself you’ll take a taxi if you get drunk. Alcohol reduces your inhibitions and impairs your judgement. Once you drink, you might feel it’s safe to drive anyway. If you’re going out with friends, plan ahead. Designate a safe driver for the evening. Be merry, but don’t pay the price. If you drink, don’t drive.

“Christmas brings mixed feelings for us as a couple. We are now in our seventies and for these last ten years we have been living together round the clock since we stopped working. Before, Christmas meant spending long days together since Mario used to work long hours and during Christmas he always took days off. We still prepare our house full of decorations and we still attend Church activities, but Christmas has lost a bit of its magic. “We are lucky to have six grandchildren for whom we try to give the best Christmas experience. But nowadays, children have

everything and for them Christmas is all year round. They do not appreciate the gifts which I work hard to prepare for them. At times, they don’t even come to visit since they are busy with their friends or with their extra-curricular activities. “Christmas should be the force that strengthens relationships. I fondly remember going out with Mario on Christmas Eve, attending mass and then looking forward to his gift. I still remember how my heart used to flutter on Christmas Eve while reading his home-made Christmas card. I know that being nostalgic does not help but I hope that young couples who might be so looking forward to spending Christmas with the love of their life, do their best to keep this flame going for every Christmas yet to come.”

RELATIONSHIPS
A&H says...
Sarah and Kahil* – married couple in their 30s ‘My husband Kahil and I have different perceptions of Christmas. I was brought up in a Catholic family where traditions have always been kept. Decorations, the advent wreath, midnight mass, cribs, baby Jesus… all these featured, and still feature prominently at my parents’ house. Kahil is Muslim and although he is not that fervent about his religion, he is still sceptical about the way we celebrate Christmas here in Malta. I tend to agree with him especially where it concerns the way this feast has

been transformed into a business. At the same time, I miss having that warm environment at home. “When December comes round, I admit I start having second thoughts about whether it was a good decision or not to enter this marriage. Kahil is a good husband who allowed me to keep on practising my religion but at the same time he does not want any religious symbols at home. Last year we had loads of arguments related to Christmas decorations at home and this year, with a sad heart, I decided to not even attempt at taking out the decorations. This has dampened my Christmas spirit and when people start describing this feast as the greatest family feast, I feel sad because I miss the beauty of it all.”
Claire and Jonathan* – business partners in a family firm ‘We, together with our employees, work hard throughout the year, including the long, summer months. Our company has to follow strict deadlines and we do business mostly with companies in the southern hemisphere. From at least mid-December to mid-January, our work load lessens because it’s summer in South America and in Australia. As partners, we do our best to reward our employees during the festive season and we have our traditional annual shut down during the Christmas period. We notice that, during these weeks, our employees work closer together and it all culminates with the annual Christmas staff party. During this much awaited evening, we see our employees with a different eye. We also notice that they mix and mingle, and there are always those two, three couples who end up together after the staff party. Jonathan mostly blames alcohol, but I think that it
An interesting study found that most relationship breakups occur during the two weeks before Christmas. Strangely enough, this season of joy, festivity and love is also a season of reflection. Many tend to reflect upon their lives amid all the noise that accompanies these festivities. Experts say that although we are surrounded by decorations, lights and happiness, bad moods are still evident during this period and these can be contagious. Some people compare their relationship unfavourably to other people’s. You might hear your friends describe the gifts they received from their partners or talking about the great surprise that awaits you on Christmas day. Your partner might show his or her affection in a different way, but these tiny things can drive you to make comparisons compare and maybe question your relationship. Trust is a major factor that strengthens relationships. During this festive season, you and your partner might have separate invitations. Avoid passing sarcastic comments about your partner’s friends or colleagues. Trust them and let them have fun. Remember the frequently quoted cliché: “Giving is better than receiving”. Do not give presents to your loved ones just for the sake of receiving something in return. Give a gift with a thought behind it and explain to your partner why you chose that particular gift with him or her in mind. Do not expect people to do the same for you. Everyone has his or her own ways and means of showing appreciation. Based on Sarah’s experience, we should all try to understand each other’s opinion about Christmas. If our partner loves Christmas, while we are not that enthusiastic, we should still celebrate together and share these experiences. Elderly parents or grand-parents in particular would welcome company and attention. We are where we are today because of what they have done in the past. Being together and making each other happy is what really counts. That’s true all year round, not just at Christmas. is true that certain people find it hard to approach someone else during normal working days, when everyone is so taken up in their own tasks. I find nothing strange in people loosening up a bit and letting down their hair at least once a year. We’ve seen relationships that started during our annual Christmas party which kept going steady afterwards, some also ending in marriage. We are dealing with adults. It is true that as employers we have a say in employees’ behaviour during functions we organise, but, at the same time, it is the season to be jolly and we have no right to restrict anyone’s fun.”

WHAT’S AHEAD IN 2017 f
or all sports enthusiasts, 2016 was a much awaited year. Apart from the annual leagues, tournaments and championships, there was the EURO 2016 championship in France in June and July and the summer Olympic Games in Rio in August. Valletta won the local football league while Neptunes dominated the water-polo scene. European football became acquainted with the Icelandic fairy-tale while the names of Usain Bolt, Simone Biles and Michael Phelps replaced those of our childhood superheroes. But what are sports enthusiasts expecting from the coming 2017?
Niki Lanzon – Neptunes water-polo player “This coming year my aim is to remain as fit as

possible. This will help me continue competing for honours at the highest level in Malta. Next year, I will also be concentrate and work more on coaching our water-polo youngsters. I believe sports in Malta can improve further if our athletes are given the proper support by the authorities. We have talented athletes in different disciplines who need to be helped and supported in order to reach higher levels.”
Luke Debono – professional bodybuilder “As a new professional bodybuilder, my priorities are now to continue twice daily with weight resistance training to increase muscle mass. In 2017 I will start my 5-year part-time PhD in sports science at the University of Kent and this will mean that I will
be based in Gillingham which helps me to be close to the best sports equipment and facilities around the county of Kent. “I am also close to London which is essential with professional bodybuilding shows being held worldwide every week. In 2017 I hope to achieve a better quality physique. This means I will have to take time off completely off from any competitive shows to focus on adding around 8-12 kilograms of solid muscle tissue onto my frame. “My expectations for sport in general in Malta is for a continuing increase in quality. I do believe that this rise in quality and in standards, though only in some particular sports, is due to the increase in the Malta’s population. A larger sample has a greater chance of containing a genetic wonder designed for a particular sport than a smaller initial sample of population. This is the main reason I think that in Malta individual sport is achieving very prestigious results such as in bodybuilding, snooker, motor racing and in Olympic shooting. I do not believe that the slight increase in sporting standards is related to government funding. I believe this because the sport that receives the most financial and political aid is football, and in this field performance has actually declined rather than improved. However, I do think that awareness of and interest in sport has increased, especially with regards to gym and fitness centres, with one or the other cropping up in different parts of the islands every couple of months.”

SPORT “My aims for 2017 vary from those related to my sport and also to my career. I am currently towards the end of my B.Ed. course and I hope to graduate next year as a physical education teacher. Regarding weightlifting, unfortunately in 2016 I suffered several injuries. In 2017 I hope to successfully complete my shoulder rehabilitation so that I can start to compete once again. For the Malta sports scene in general, I hope that 2017 will be a great year for many individual athletes and also for national teams who will be representing Malta around the world. Above all, I hope the importance of physical activity will be recognised by Maltese people, irrespective of age, gender and ability. Statistics related to obesity in Malta are scary and we must all roll up our sleeves and work hard towards a healthier nation.”
Andrei Agius – footballer with Hibernians F.C. “My main aim for 2017 is to continue playing as much as possible as it's my passion and my professional job. I also hope to win as many titles as possible. Apart from playing football, my mind is now focused on studying. I am currently studying football business and management and my aim is to specialise in the football sector. My wish is to keep on helping football in Malta even when the time comes for me to retire as a football player. Thanks to my playing experience over the years and my studies, I hope to contribute towards the improvement of football in Malta. “Regarding the local sports scenario, my hopes are that the major stake holders, meaning the government, the football associations and their respective members, understand that sport is one of the world’s biggest industries and it is time to start practicing and regarding sport as a profession and not as a part time interest or something amateurish. This should be the only way forward for Maltese sports. A clear vision has to be implemented for the future of our sport in our country.”
Andre Schembri – professional footballer with Boavista F.C. in Portugal “This year has marked my debut in the Portuguese football league. This is an experience which I am cherishing and I hope to keep on playing regularly with Boavista F.C. throughout 2017. I also hope that sport in Malta starts to change radically. We need to move from amateurism to professionalism in every aspect and in every sport.” 42

Nicola Muscat – swimmer
Antonella Chouhal – athlete (thrower) “The main event in 2017 is the Games for the Small States of Europe which will be held in San Marino. My main aim is to, once again, beat the discus and hammer national records. I hope to qualify for the Games in San Marino and win a medal. I also intend to take part in the European Masters and hope to win a place on the podium. I truly believe in Maltese talent and I hope that we will discover and develop more sporting talent in Malta. All stakeholders must roll up their sleeves and invest more in maintain current facilities and developing new ones. We must also target physical activity and talent scouting in schools. Investing in physical education is also another viable option that will help in developing a more active population.”
Rodmar Pulis – weightlifter
“After swimming for most of my life – 18 years – and participating in two sets of Olympic Games, I am at a major cross roads. My journey has been anything but easy however I have been blessed with a family who helped me make it all happen and I could not be happier with where it has taken me and who it has turned me into. For the swimmer side of me, 2017 might be the year where I decide to walk away from swimming, at least for now. Professional sport in Malta is a constant battle and I am proud to have made it so far already. Instead of expectations, I have hope. I hope that a change in mentality occurs soon. Athletes are hand-picked fairly and they are funded, while academics are not completely separated from sport. I know first-hand how frustrating and burdensome this can be. While recognising that some faculties at the University appreciate top athletes, the system leaves top athletes at a huge disadvantage when compared to other students. It is a constant struggle to juggle studies, and intense training leaves athletes drained by the end of it all. What must also change is that power should not be given to only one person in a federation in Malta. At times, this leads to very unfair decisions which result in top athletes walking away from sport in general. More than anything, I hope that the road to professional sport becomes smoother for the next generation of athletes, especially the swimmers I am coaching. We are a small island. We cannot afford to lose precious talent by making it incredibly difficult for them. This is why I work with younger swimmers. I want to smoothen their journey as much as possible.”

Our joints undergo a lifetime of wear and tear and they can become damaged by injury, repetitive activity or over use. Arthrimel, containing Glucosamine Sulfate, offers a good solution for your joint pain. Glucosamine is found naturally in your body and it keeps cartilage healthy. As you get older, your levels of glucosamine begin to drop, which leads to joint pain and stiffness. Glucosamine is not found in any natural food sources so it needs to be taken as supplements. Arthrimel will help to protect and repair joints and will reduce pain and stiffness. It is important to note that whilst many glucosamine supplements are available, Arthrimel contains good quality pharmaceutical grade Glucosamine Sulphate. Arthrimel should be taken as two tablets daily with or without meals. Arthrimel is a medicinal product. Always read the package leaflet. Arthrimel is available in all leading pharmacies.
