A Quiet Corner of Resistance 독립운동의 숨은 거점
The Magpie Hotel occupies the former YMCA Hotel, which operated from 1968 to 2019. The original walls and floor plan remain, with traces of the building’s history woven throughout. Period details such as the distinctive step-up bathrooms offer a glimpse into its past.
The YMCA Building once served as a meeting place for Korea’s independence activists, helping ignite the March 1st Movement of 1919, a nationwide protest against colonial occupation. Its rooms became places to gather, organize, and exchange ideas at a pivotal moment in Korea’s history.
까치호텔은 1968년부터 2019년까지 운영되었던 구 YMCA 호텔
이곳은 과거 독립운동가들의 비밀 모임 장소이자, 1919년 3.1 운동의
터에 자리 잡고 있습니다. 기존의 벽체와 구조를 살려 건물 고유의
불씨를 지핀 현장이었습니다. 독립운동이 한창일 때 사람들이 모여
역사를 이어가고, 작은 턱이 있는 욕실처럼 지나온 세월을 떠올리게
생각을 나누고 대한민국의 미래를 도모하던 역사적인 공간입니다.

Where Korea Learned to Play 한국 현대 스포츠가 시작된 곳
Home to the YMCA, this building was where modern sports took root in Korea, from baseball and basketball to volleyball and more. Its indoor swimming pool, the country’s first, became a training ground for generations of athletes, including the Olympian Cho Oh-ryun. 이곳은 야구, 농구, 배구 등 한국 현대 스포츠가 뿌리를 내린 곳입니다. 1층에 위치한 한국 최초의 실내 수영장은 올림픽 금메달리스트 조오련 선수를 비롯한 수많은 선수들의 연습장이었습니다.

A Community, Then and Now 모두를 위한 공간
The YMCA building is more than a hotel. The sixth floor houses the Employment Readiness Center for the Visually Impaired, alongside small businesses that have grown around it, including the Inmyeong massage clinic. On the way to breakfast, guests may pass longtime regulars, some of whom have been coming to the YMCA for over forty years. 까치호텔이 위치한 이 건물은 호텔의 고객들 뿐만 아니라 오랜 시간동안 이곳을 드나들었던 공동체를 위한 공간입니다. YMCA 뿐만 아니라 시각장애인 취업유지지원센터, 인명지압원을 비롯해 오랜 시간 함께해 온 장소들이 모여 있습니다.

OUR STORY: A Building with Stories to Tell 이야기를 담은 곳 A Dialogue in Design The Magpie Hotel’s design pays tribute to the building’s evolution from the early 1900s through the 1950s, a period when Western design first took hold in Korea. That influence carries through the building’s architectural form, including classical moldings and stained glass, set against Korean patterns and traditional materials. The result is a space true to its origins, yet reflecting the duality of its history. Such careful consideration extends to the details: hanji, lacquered mulberry paper, natural clay, traditional knotwork, and locally crafted stonework, all made in collaboration with Korean artisans and craftspeople. Many of the materials and pieces throughout The Magpie Hotel were specially made for the hotel, bringing together local craftsmanship with furniture and materials selected from beyond Korea. 까치호텔의 디자인은 서구식 건축과 디자인이 한국에 자리 잡기 시작한 1900년대 초반부터 1950년대까지의 건축적 흐름에서 영감을 받았습니다. 당시의 건축이 지닌 특징과 문화를 존중하며, 지금 이 공간에 담아내고자 했습니다. 클래식한 몰딩과 스테인드글라스 같은 디자인 요소는 한국 전통의 문양과 자재와 조화를 이루도록 설계하여, 서로 다른 시대와 문화가 만나는 지점을 만들었습니다. 까치호텔은 이 건물이 지닌 본래의 정체성과 시간의 흔적을 존중하며, 과거와 현재가 자연스럽게 공존하는 공간입니다. 한지와 옻칠을 더한 삼지장판, 황토, 전통 매듭, 그리고 석공의 손길을 거친 석재까지. 국내 장인 및 공예가들과의 협업을 통해 공간 곳곳의 디테일과 세심한 배려를 담았습니다.

DJ Soulscape
His 2000 debut, 180g Beats, remains one of the influential Korean records of its era. Since then, he has become a devoted archivist of 1970s Seoul, recovering its rock, soul, and funk through his Sound of Seoul mixes and the collective 360 Sounds. DJ Soulscape의 2000년 데뷔작 《180g Beats》는 한국 음악계에 깊은 영향을 남긴 아이코닉한 앨범입니다. 이후 Sound of Seoul믹스와 360 Sounds크루를 통해 록, 소울, 펑크를 복원하며 1970년대 서울을 기록하는 아키비스트로 활동하고 있습니다.

RIMINISSI
The composer Narim Kim, RIMINISSI moves between orchestral writing, contemporary jazz, and hip-hop across film and independent releases. More recently, he has turned his ear to curation, shaping playlists that give a place its own sound. 작곡가 김나림의 RIMINISSI는 오케스트라, 컨템포러리 재즈, 힙합을 넘나드는 다양한 영역에서 활동합니다. 최근에는 공간에 고유한 소리를 부여하는 플레이리스트를 기획하고 있습니다.
