After 40 years of playing, the Arrow Miners Band has gone into recess. Local historian, David Clarke was asked to record their story, and he decided not only to record the band's story but also the story of the Buckingham Belles. 'They were very much a team and had so many great times together,' David said. The book is full of quotes and has over 130 photos. The Arrow Miners band had over 34 members during its playing life, while the Buckingham Belles have had over 80 and are still going. The two groups have become so much a part of the town's history, especially during Autumn Festival. The book will be launched at the Lakes District Museum on Sunday 19 April at 2pm. Everyone is welcome. The book is $25 on sale at the museum.
Prepare your passport for a musical adventure as the Central Otago Regional Choir presents its upcoming concert series “A World of Song – from Sweden to Samoa” on Saturday, 9 May at 7.30pm, Athenaeum Hall. Under the expert direction of Richard Madden and accompanied by Queenstown pianist Alison Frude, this performance promises a whirlwind tour of the globe in the universal language of song.
You can expect a vibrant programme of 12 songs in seven languages, including timeless favourites such as Londonderry Air, Shenandoah and Loch Lomond, cultural treasures such as Furusato and the moving Wairua Tapu, bookended by the high energy Negro spiritual Little David, Play on Yo’ Harp and the infectious rhythms of the Samoan dance song, Minoi Minoi.
Guest artists will be University of Otago students Natasha Manowitz (mezzo soprano) and Portia Bell (cello). These are the first recipients of a new initiative by the choir to offer scholarships to music students. In addition to a monetary scholarship, recipients will be given the opportunity to perform as the choir’s guests. Natasha, already accomplished in flute and violin and a well-qualified musician, has recently returned to study as a solo singer, under Tessa Romano. Portia Bell is a talented young cellist pursuing a Bachelor of Music under Heleen du Plessis. She has already accumulated multiple scholarships and is an active performer in the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and Principal Cellist of the Dunedin Youth Orchestra. Expect exceptional musicianship from these star performers. Both will be accompanied by regular guest of the choir, pianist Cameron Monteath who will also impress with the Kapustin Variations Opus 41, a high energy piece requiring magical dexterity. Tickets available from choir members, online at www.lilregie.com, or from the Lakes District Museum, Arrowtown and Unichem Summerfield’s Pharmacy, Frankton.
After public consultation last year QLDC has published the Arrowtown Riverside Reserves Concept Development Plan. The AVA welcomes a community developed concept which provides a degree of consensus on future development or ad hoc changes.
Some aspects of the plan do not align with AVA recommendations or the perspective of every community member. However, any significant changes would still be subject to separate consultations were they to be actioned. macetown road access
After over a year of work lead by the Shotover 4WD Club and a range of interest groups the Macetown Rd Managed Access System became fully operational on 1st April 2026 with an online permit system, CCTV camera surveillance and number plate recognition. 4WD vehicles and motorcycles

require a $40 online permit for each trip. Local residents qualify for a $100 Annual Pass for unlimited access between 1st April and 31st March. All permit fees are paid directly to Arrowtown Charitable Trust for ongoing track maintenance.

TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF THIS
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of QLDC owned 6 Merioneth Street has been returned to the community. Councillors Melissa White, Heath Copland and members of the community successfully lobbied for the funds. Originally $441,152 was proposed from the $2,761,000 sale towards a QLDC held community endowment, which was ultimately increased to $600,797.

More than 100 volunteers turned out on a warm Sunday morning at Eichardts Flat, planting trees and with smiles all around, before enjoying well-earned food and refreshments generously provided by local sponsors. An additional 3,000 Beech and Totara have been planted around the Sawpit Gully track as part of the Arrowtown Beech Party Planting Day. With close to 30,000 trees now in the ground, the Arrowtown Choppers are working to restore land once covered by wilding pines by reconnecting the four remnant beech stands, creating a thriving wildlife corridor, and delivering a major boost to local biodiversity. Look forward to seeing you again in Spring, enjoy your winter. Stay informed through our social media (@arrowtownchoppers).

Arrowtown Promotion & Business Association (APBA) represents the CBD and businesses of Arrowtown. With a busy summer behind us and the 40th Anniversary Autumn Festival now underway, it’s a good time to share an update.

APBA continues to deliver strong value to members, with recent survey results showing a rise to 77%, up on previous years. Historic protection and parking remain top priorities, and these will guide our focus in the year ahead. We are also working with Council on a “community-led” future plan for our CBD as part of the 10-year plan process.
Beautification was a major focus over summer. Many businesses refreshed their shopfronts, while APBA supported repainting the phone booths and replacing most of the flower pots along Buckingham Street and Ramshaw Lane, with the remainder to be completed shortly. We also saw 17 new car parks created through the realignment of Dudley’s Precinct and successfully advocated for the installation of 15-minute parks outside the Bakery.
Clear, cohesive signage remains important for our businesses. We are working with tenants on new installations in 2026 to improve visibility while reducing signage clutter across the village.
It has been sad to see the closure of Bunnies and Simon Myers Gallery this month, though we look forward to welcoming a new tenant to Ramshaw Lane this winter. We also welcome new owners to Bendix Stables.
We have upcoming member events, including “All Things Staff –Immigration, Housing and Recruitment” on 30 April, and First Aid and defibrillator training in May, alongside servicing the two AEDs we maintain on Buckingham Street. Thanks to You Gather Events for funding the replacement of the Post Office defibrillator, with the Bakery AED scheduled for replacement next year.
This month, APBA is also supporting an appeal to the Environmental Court, alongside AVA and Friends of Arrowtown, to reinstate the “Arrowtown Design Guidelines” as part of the urban intensification proposed variation. These have guided development for over 30 years and were recently replaced with the more ambiguous “Arrowtown character.” Without reinstatement, there is a risk of irreversible consequences and long-term impacts on future development.
The Arrowtown Riverside Reserves Concept Development Plan has now been published following wide consultation, including strong APBA input. While currently unfunded, we support future investment and ongoing community involvement before any implementation.

Finally, the APBA 2026 Photo Competition is now on display at the Lakes District Museum until mid-May—well worth a visit. For winter ideas and updates, don't forget to visit arrowtown.com.
