pushing runners to their limits

The Arrowtown Backyard Ultra was held over the weekend, drawing 150 competitors to tackle a grueling endurance challenge around the Arrow River. Runners completed a 6.71km loop every hour on the hour, continuing until only one remained — the Last Person Standing.

In this unique format, competitors who fail to finish a lap within the hour or miss the next start are recorded as DNF (Did Not Finish). The event’s unofficial motto sums it up perfectly: “It’s easy until it’s not!”

1 lap = 6.71km

6 laps = marathon (close)

15 laps = 100km

24 laps = 100 miles

This year’s Last Person Standing was Kieran Philip of Cromwell, completing an incredible 40 laps — 268km, finishing around 3 am. Hadani Woodruff of Christchurch, last year’s women’s winner, retained her title as Last Woman Standing, completing 34 laps — 221km.

Arrowtown locals also put in outstanding performances: James Park — 25 laps

Daniel Cronshaw Hunt — 19 laps

John White and Nigel Williamson — 10 laps each At 12.05 pm, just after the ultra runners set off on their next lap, the Kids Trail Race began. Young runners tackled a 1km loop, choosing to complete one, two, or three laps. The event gave them a taste of the ultra-running atmosphere, complete with cheers and support from the crowd.

arrowtown village association news

The Arrowtown Village Association hosted our AGM on Wednesday 22nd October at the Tennis Club Community Rooms.

Over 30 local residents turned out to hear what we and other volunteer community groups have been up to throughout this year. The AVA thanks new mayor John Glover and newly elected councillors, Samuel “Q” Belk, Heath Copland and Melissa White who also attended at short notice.

Key highlights for the year included; Hearings on Urban Intensification, Macetown Road 4x4 Managed Access, New #4 Bus Route, Local Elections, Freedom Camping Bi-Law Submission and the Arrow River Reserve Draft Management Plan. We also heard from other local community groups who do a huge amount on behalf of the village including; Arrowtown Choppers, Community Response Group, Meals on Wheels and Russell “Wasp Man” Heckler. A new committee was voted in which retained all members from 2025. Offices will be elected at the next committee meeting on 27th November. Your committee of volunteer representatives for the previous and upcoming year are as follows;

Nick Fifield (Chair), Natalia Galin, Renee Haenga, Dave Harding-Shaw (Treasurer), Jill Hodgson, Graeme Morrison, Gemma Ross, Mel Seyfort, Nicolet Spice (Deputy Chair), Lesley Turner, and Emma Wilson (Secretary).

As previous Chair I would like to thank everyone for their commitment and support over the last 12 months and look forward to another busy year ahead.

creepy carnival success

A massive thank you to everyone in the Arrowtown community for coming together and making the Remarkable Sweet Shop Creepy Carnival such a tremendous success. Thanks to your enthusiasm and generosity, we were able to raise over $1,500 in support of I Am Hope. Your kindness is truly appreciated and will go a long way toward helping young people in need. To all the parents—thank you for your generous donations and for getting into the spirit of the carnival. Your support is what makes events like these possible and so memorable for everyone involved.

Special mention goes to Mel’s legendary sardine game, which was an absolute hit once again. Arrowtown kids proved, as always, that they love a good trick—never disappointed to win a carrot or potato from the infamous Wheel of Doom! The laughter and excitement were contagious, and it was fantastic to see so many creative costumes adding to the carnival atmosphere. The weather played its part, the costumes were outstanding, and the energy from all the kids made for a super-fun, spooktacular event. It’s this incredible community spirit that makes Arrowtown events so special. Thank you once again to everyone who participated, donated, and volunteered. We can’t wait to see you all again next year for another round of carnival fun!

what a night!

What a fantastic evening of fun and support for our beautiful Pre-School tamariki! Elle, Sara, Eva, Eilish, Hannah G & H, Jessica, Alice, and Mimi put together an exceptional Bingo Extravaganza — and it was a hit! A huge thank you to everyone who came along and played. The room was buzzing, and as always, Ethel & Bethel brought plenty of laughs. What a fabulous night!

arrowtown school report

The Year 3&4 tamariki have been learning about what schooling was like in Arrowtown during the Victorian Era. They visited the Arrowtown Museum last week. The children dressed in clothes from the Victorian days and participated in a class with 'Miss Grey'. Miss Grey taught them some handwriting and arithmetic. The children found sitting in rows and writing on slates a lot different from their usual classroom environment. They were constantly told to sit up straight, nobody was allowed to talk unless asked to, and a child from each class was punished with the cane or sent to the corner in a dunce hat!
