celebration lights up arrowtown
On Monday, June 23rd, the Arrowtown community came together for a vibrant Matariki celebration - Whakanuia a Matariki ki Kā-muriwai - hosted at Arrowtown School. This special event was a true collaboration between Arrowtown Preschool, Te Kōhanga Reo o Whakatipu Waimāori, and Arrowtown School - Te Kura o Kā-Muriwai.
The afternoon was filled with fantastic performances, delicious food, and beautiful art. Our tamariki (children) proudly performed Kapa Haka, showcasing their talent and cultural pride. Attendees enjoyed a wide array of amazing food stalls, including a traditional boil-up and a mouth-watering hāngi cooked in our purpose-built hāngi pit. Arrowtown students also shared their stunning Matariki artwork, each piece thoughtfully representing each of the stars in the Matariki constellation. The entire afternoon and evening were a huge success, thanks to the incredible hard work of the organising committee and all the dedicated volunteers who generously offered their time. We are also grateful for the generous donations from the wider community.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this such a wonderful and memorable event!

Urban Intensification (28th July-1st August)
Almost 2 years after public submissions regarding the variation to the district plan to allow greater building heights in Arrowtown’s medium density zone, hearings will be held in Athenaeum Hall the week of Monday 28th July. We encourage the community attend the hearings and participate constructively in the process to demonstrate Arrowtown’s rejection of this variation.
A Section 42 Report was issued in June which recommended a reduction in the original proposal of 12 meters height limits to now 8 meters + 1 meter pitched roof in the medium density zone. Please contact Friends of Arrowtown Village for more informationbella15@outlook.co.nz.
Macetown Road Access Meeting
A successful Community Meeting was held on 7th July to outline a managed access approach to Macetown Road. This would involve an automatic gate and pre-applied permit system for vehicles to enter.
Walkers, bikers and horse riders are exempt. Multiple community groups have sat on the steering community lead by the Shotover 4x4 Club with the intent of preserving the access across private land and funding necessary maintenance to into the future.
Bus Service
A new service from #4 Arrowtown to Jack’s Point crucially via Arthurs Point and Queenstown began operation in July. This allows more convenient access in both directions, which is faster and avoids congestion through Frankton. The #2 will continue to run but will terminate at Frankton.

live music, tucked away in cosy corners
The Backroom Set is a new acoustic music series quietly emerging in Arrowtown. It hosts original music in intimate, unexpected spaceswith the location revealed just the day before. You might find yourself in an old miner’s cottage, above a gallery, or the backroom of a shop. The setting really feels more like a living room than a venue: think low lighting, mismatched chairs, maybe an old heater in the corner.
Created by Arrowtown local Alice Milne, the series was born from an idea to bring people together in smaller, slower ways. No stage, no crowd, just good music. The idea first sparked when she watched a slam poet perform in a little shoe shop in London with a handful of people on the floor sharing $8 wine from Sainsbury's, and it made its way back to Arrowtown.
Kindly supported by the Central Lakes Arts Support Scheme and Wet Jacket, the first show on 17 July is already sold out. More sessions are in the works; new dates will be shared soon. If you're an artist interested in playing original music, feel free to get in touch www.backroomset.nz

27 Abhinath Berry Piano Concert
abhinath berry – recognising a special pianist
There is no way round this statement - Abhinath Berry is one of the most exciting young pianists to emerge from New Zealand. On a short break home from a major scholarship at London’s famed Guildhall, and we’re lucky to have him in Arrowtown for a “don’t miss” concert on Sunday 27 July at The Lodge, Arrowtown Lifestyle Village. Now 24, Abhinath has the largest part of a recording and concert career well ahead of him. At his young age the surest indicators of a coming super-talent are revealed in the list of piano competitions and scholarships won, somewhere north of 25 in total. For Arrowtown, Abhinath has chosen a popular program which includes Lizst, Ravel, and three beautiful Gershwin arrangements made by the American Earl Wild, who’s been dubbed “the last great Romantic pianist.”

arrowtown school report
The Year 5-8 Cross Country took place at the end of Term 2 at the Monk’s farm. Thank you to Roger Monk for letting Arrowtown School use his property - it is the perfect location with hills, mud and cow dung, a classic cross country course!
Well done to all students who competed, it is a real test of determination and hard work.
The top runners went through to compete at the Wakatipu Cross Country, and then some qualifiers went further to compete at the Central Otago Cross Country in Cromwell.
