mindjam Get ready to tickle your brain at MindJam, Catalyst Trust with Otago University Humanities division are running a free series of thought-provoking conversations taking place at the Lakes District Museum in Arrowtown over Labour Weekend, Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October. Topics include technology and teaching, feminism in the modern world, building a better world, artificial relationships and artificial intelligence, and New Zealand’s general election in a global context. Guest experts will share their knowledge and insights, with plenty of opportunity for questions and conversation. All events are free, with registration encouraged to secure a seat. beech party: one of the best yet! The Arrowtown hills were buzzing with activity on Sunday 4 October, as nearly 200 volunteers turned out for the 12th Arrowtown Choppers Beech Party. It was one of our most successful events yet, with locals, families and supporters rolling up their sleeves to help restore native forest to the hills behind Arrowtown. Over the past six years, the Arrowtown Choppers and their incredible community of volunteers have planted more than 30,000 native beech and tōtara trees, replacing invasive wilding pines and helping return the hills to their natural state. The Beech Party is about much more than planting trees. It's about bringing the community together, protecting our local environment and ensuring the beautiful landscapes that make Arrowtown so special are there for future generations to enjoy. Following a fantastic morning of planting, volunteers enjoyed a well-earned BBQ, celebrating another successful day on the hill. A huge thank you goes to our volunteers, sponsors and local businesses whose generous support makes these events possible. We simply couldn't do it without you. The Arrowtown Choppers are already looking forward to the next Beech Party in autumn 2027. 33
arrowtown village association news out of zone fast track proposals
Arrowtown’s Athenaeum Hall was packed to standing room on Mon 12th Oct for a meeting hosted by Queenstown Smart Growth Initiative. Opposing fast-track proposals that are outside of the agreed growth zone. Particularly “Ridgeburn” a development the size of Arrowtown, 5kms from our doorstep. Weeks from an election incumbent MP Jospeh Mooney fronted up and was joined by other candidates politicking their responses to controversial fast track legislation. Mayor John Glover held Mr Mooney to his apparent statement that no fast track proposals would proceed if the infrastructure was not in place. Mr Glover pressed that this must mean, roading, public transport, hospitals, and schools, which are already under intense pressure without any of the proposals yet approved. QSGI are fundraising to mount a robust response to this proposal with $250k required for expert advice that clearly outlines the evidence against Ridgeburn. Progress is being made with repairs to the Arrow River Millenium Trail following extensive flooding and damage in late August. This will help support the Arrowtown Backyard Ultra event on Saturday 7th November, which sees competitors loop the river trail from Butlers Green once every hour until the last person is standing. Last year’s winner completed 40 laps, over 40 continuous hours, covering 268kms. Nick Fifield – AVA Chairperson
