magical start to the festive season

The festive season will get off to a magical start with The Central Otago Regional Choir’s Christmas concert “The Very Best Time of the Year”, on Friday, November 22. The concert will be packed with enchanting carols and songs, including beloved traditional carols (O Holy Night), always popular religious and secular carols by Sir John Rutter (Candlelight Carol and The Very Best Time of Year), film tracks (Somewhere in my Memory from Home Alone) by John Williams, and a Mark Hayes arrangement of Mel Torme’s The Christmas Song, not to mention the calypso style Tomorrow Shall Be my Dancing Day by John Gardner and Sussex Carol arranged by David Willcocks. This programme offers varied and easy listening for all the family. Talented guest artists will complement the evening though their items have nothing to do with Christmas! Soprano Isobel Topham has had rich experience on the stage as chorister, entertainer and soloist. Her song selection will include works by Rossini and Mozart.

Ayla Biner-McGrath is a student of law and classical performance at the University of Otago whose performances on clarinet have seen her in orchestras, competitions and also as a soloist. Both Isobel and Ayla will be accompanied by pianist and composer Cameron Monteath, who’s no stranger to choir audiences.

The choir is delighted to have Queenstown pianist Alison Frude accompanying them, her skills and musicality being a great asset. Director Richard Madden brings the knowledge of a lifetime in music and choral singing to the choir and his selection of music is masterful.

Don’t miss this joyful occasion – come and celebrate the spirit of Christmas with us!

Tickets: $30 from Lakes District Museum. School students free. Cash door sales from 7pm.
