a relatively uneventful evening

A Relatively Uneventful Evening will be a night out to remember as you laugh through the calamity written by New Zealander George Arthur. Addison is throwing a dinner party to celebrate her friend Eleanor’s first book being published. Unfortunately she is also hosting Eleanor’s other friend Kim and everyone’s partners. Will they like her new decor? Will there be enough food? Will Addison and Kim be civil to each other? And who is the stranger at the door?

TOP ROW L-R: David Cantwell, Freddy Okyere, Jay Simon (Director), Angus Pettigrew, Shannon Pennefather

BOTTOM ROW: Victoria Mills, Virginia Borick, Sophie Timmermans-Delves, Janey Bytheway, Dana Hamilton

The cast and crew are enjoying seeing this ensemble play come together. After the last two Remarkable Theatre shows in ArrowtownPint-Sized Plays 2024 and Blackadder, The Golden Age - sold out, audiences are encouraged to get tickets early from Eventfinda. The comedy will be on stage 5-14 September with a range of ticket options. Geoffrey is Addison’s husband and is being played by Remarkable Theatre stalwart David Cantwell of Arrowtown. Throughout the twists and turns of the play Geoffrey, a therapist, tries to keep the group calm and happy. David loves being in a New Zealand play and how the characters of Geoffrey and Addison contrast each other.

New to Remarkable Theatre is the lovely Sophie Timmermans-Delves who has recently moved from the UK to Gibbston Valley. Sophie has tried stand up comedy and uses this experience and her acting education to help bring the character Amanda to life. Amanda and her husband arrive late to the dinner party and have to decipher what on earth is happening. Sophie is enjoying getting to know people in her community through theatre and as a parent relates to Amanda and her need for a night out.

Director Jay Simon describes 'A Relatively Uneventful Evening' as ‘A Weekend at Bernie's’ meets ‘Abigail’s Party’. It’s a fast paced play with characters sure to delight. This modern, slick comedy will test the relationships of friends and lovers on stage and promises to be fabulous entertainment for everyone.

bush creek ice

Bush Creek Ice has had a successful second season, they were able to be open for the school holidays bringing families down to play and enjoy the space.

Many people enjoyed the natural ice around Otago and people had travelled to find where bush creek was. They have made some improvements with a fire, bbq, and fencing that has helped protect the ice surface, and have had some rubber mats donated by a local gym.

The volunteers are doing their best to work with the weather and the environment, its very reliant on multiple cold days to hold the ice surface. The fact that we are skating in August is a bonus, currently the bush creek rink is still open, despite loose ice before the winter strong came through when they had that warmer period.

There is a community quiz night fundraiser on the 22nd of August, details can be found on their FB page, local RSA are hosting an evening to help raise funds for upkeep, maintenance and new fences.

o'malley honoured at the arrowtown rugby club

The Arrowtown Rugby Club celebrated its annual prizegiving awards last Saturday night, where Jim O'Malley was honoured with a well-deserved Life Membership status.

Jim O'Malley, a dedicated member of the Arrowtown Rugby Club since 2003, has shown unwavering commitment to the club through the years. Even after retiring from playing, he stayed on in the committee taking on the role of club captain, consistently attending every home game when possible and helping wherever he could. He was known for marking out the fields, putting away the gear, and setting up the club rooms.

The award was presented by past president and life member Simon Spark, who reflected on Jim's time at the club. Simon recounted how, in true southern style, he arrived at Jim's front door with a box of beers to convince him to take on the captaincy, knowing Jim was the man for the job. Jim's wife, Rebecca, and their children, Jed and Bridgette, were in attendance to witness the special presentation. In his acceptance speech, Jim encouraged the younger players to get involved where they can. He expressed his gratitude, thanking his family for allowing him to be involved in what he affectionately called his "happy place."

The evening celebrated dedication, community, and rugby spirit that binds the members of the Arrowtown Rugby Club together. Jim O'Malley's contribution to the club exemplifies the true meaning of sportsmanship and community service, making him a deserving recipient of this prestigious honour.
