Limit Heat Styling:

Reduce the use of heat styling tools such as blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. If you must use them, apply a heat protectant to shield your hair from damage and try to use the lowest heat setting possible.

All heat protectors have a different temperatures of protection so be aware of what they are.

A draft long term plan(LTP) for the district is out for community consultation. This is an important document that covers Council’s workplan for the next ten years, with a more detailed focus on the first three. It sets out all the services, projects and activities Council is planning to deliver on behalf of the community, how it will be funded and what it means for the rates you pay.

As we look ahead to the next ten years, affordability is top of mind for everyone. Like other businesses, and councils across NZ (and the world), everything we do costs more. Inflation, high interest rates and insurance fees, increased civil construction costs, government compliance costs, the reintroduction of Three Waters and uncertainty around alternative funding tools, has meant this has been one of the most difficult budgets to prepare on behalf of the district.

Council has spent the last six months closely scrutinising projects, services, programmes and general operating costs, and making some very tough decisions around priorities and what this means for rates increases.

The LTP proposes an average rates increase of 15.6% for 2024-2025. This is historically high but unfortunately unavoidable. The consultation document has been distributed to letterboxes across the district. And if you’d like to drill into more detail, there’s all the supporting policies and strategies available online to help you get informed. This is no tick box exercise, your submissions will help shape the final plan and decisions made by the elected Council when it is time to adopt it.

Full details at letstalk.qldc.govt.nz/long-termplan-2024-2034. Submissions close on 28 July 2024.

junior rugby season thrives in arrowtown

This year, Arrowtown's Junior Rugby season is bustling with excitement and energy as we have 109 players competing across 12 teams. Our teams range from Rippa Rugby for 5-year-olds to the Open Grade for 13-yearolds, ensuring that players of all ages and skill levels have the opportunity to participate and develop their rugby talents. Our 19 volunteer coaches play a crucial role, dedicating their time and expertise to guide and mentor these young players each week. Their commitment and enthusiasm are invaluable, and we are incredibly grateful for their efforts. Throughout the season, all matches are held within the Central Otago Junior Competition, offering our players ample opportunities to compete and grow. The season began with a pre-season tournament that set the stage for an action-packed schedule. The end-of-season tournament on August 3rd will be a great conclusion to a fantastic season. We are fortunate to have the generous support of our sponsors, including Sotheby's, The Roost, Fork and Tap, and Patagonia. Their continued backing allows us to provide and sustain junior rugby opportunities within our community. Thank you to everyone involved for making this season a success, and we look forward to celebrating the achievements of our young athletes at the end-of-season tournament.

thank you & feedback now open for matariki

Thank you from the Matariki Arrowtown Ka-Muriwai event committee for those who came along to the festivities on 28 June. A shoutout also to those who volunteered, sponsored and performed - this event wouldn’t be possible without your aroha and mahi.

Over 8000 people rugged up and enjoyed the Matariki celebrations which spanned from Buckingham Green to Library Green. The crowd was a mix of locals and visitors from further afield including Christchurch, Auckland, Australia, and USA.

In addition to the new layout this year, there were more indoor and outdoor activities including interactive ones like Te Papa Reo, weaving and the trio of trees. Weaving was immensely popular, surpassing our expectations with over 500 people visiting. The trio of trees saw lots of engagement with over 1,500 wishes and memories left. The stages featured over 220 students and 14 performers, and the other activities included 18 specialists. The event was also supported by over an incredible crew of 110 volunteers. We worked hard to minimise waste this year and by using crockery cups we diverted over 400 single use cups and over 550 single use boxes/ containers by using stainless steel plates. Some vendors also used only napkins to reduce waste. This is something we will continue to focus on for future years. If you came to Matariki Arrowtown Ka-Muriwai, we would love to get your feedback via our short survey: www.surveymonkey.com/r/G8L9FPJ
