A cunning plan is underway at Remarkable Theatre to bring to the stage the much loved story of Blackadder. Based on series two of the BBC television show, Blackadder- The Golden Age, the action sees Blackadder and his cronies navigate the trials and tribulations of the Elizabethan era. Veteran thespian Marty Newell (Jesus Christ Superstar, Cosi) plays Lord Edmond Blackadder and is joined on the stage by 16 other actors, some playing a variety of roles. Arrowtown locals Danny Duckinfield and Justin Abbiss (One Man, Two Guvnors, Mamma Mia) will capture the essence of Baldrick and Percy respectively. Of rehearsals so far Danny has said the hardest thing about playing Baldrick is that his demeanour and posture are completely at odds with Danny’s own style. Danny is loving the opportunity to be in a main production having recently been in Remarkable Theatre’s Pint-Sized Plays and Space Oddities. Justin jumped at the chance to be in Blackadder, remembering it fondly. ‘It was the only thing that could clear out the pubs. You had to be home on Sundays to watch Blackadder.’ He also believes a good laugh is exactly what everyone needs.

So what can we expect from this production? A great story, fantastic lines we can’t reveal but they involve a weasel and some wonderful performances. Audiences will be blown away by Lady Whiteadder (played by Ali Board) and Queenie (Nicky Busst). And of course Blackadder will be weaving all the characters together with his sarcastic wit and ego. It’s been 40 years since Blackadder first appeared but it is still as popular as ever. For a jolly good night out make a plan and get tickets today. Blackadder- The Golden Age. 7-16 September, Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall. Brought to you by Remarkable Theatre and Arrowtown Lifestyle Village. Tickets from Eventfinda.
