nikau harp trio

Named after the magnificent carved palm on Helen's harp with its golden huia bird on the soundboard, Nikau Harp Trio bring to life the glittering magical world of harp with strings. Nikau’s program opens with joyful Baroque trio by George Frideric Handel, to the world of French romance by the little known woman composer and harpist Henriette Renié, followed by her compatriot Jaques Ibert and his sparkling witty Trio, written in 1943. Pop your effervescent drink of choice for the second half, and enjoy Mozart’s Blue Rondo, Fandangos & Swing by Cole Porter, Gershwin et al, the hypnotic haze of Irons’ Dreamland, Nikau’s own arrangement of Debussy’s timeless Clair de Lune, to arrive at pulsating Tango of Piazzolla’s Argentina. Dancers welcome!

With nature featuring strongly in this ensemble's ethos, the trio are delighted to include Korimako Bells, written for them by NZ film composer Mark Smythe, inspired by the call of the Bellbird. The trio also are passionate about the Abel Tasman's Birdsong Trust, which aims to return the sound of native birdcalls to the forests and beaches of this national park.

Nikau is a trio of outstanding musicians - Helen Webby, Cathy Irons and Paul Mitchell; with extensive NZ and international experience. Webby and Irons successfully toured South Island as a duo in 2021 with many requests to return, and are delighted to invite Mitchell to join them on tour this year, to create Nikau Harp Trio.

From a dazzling display of virtuosity to the gentle lilt of a lullaby, from the energetic burst of passion to quiet contemplation, the cascading sound of Nikau Harp Trio will captivate and leave you breathless.

Sunday 26 February, 4 pm, Athenaeum Hall.

arrowtown village association news

Buzzing Buckingham Street

Arrowtown has been buzzing with activity this summer with cars, campers, cyclists, busses, bikes and pedestrians navigating their way to, from and through our historic village. The return of visitors in large numbers has reignited a number of practical discussions from before the pandemic. Potential changes and upgrades to Buckingham Street ranked as 5th priority in our recent community survey with 37.5% selecting it as an important topic.

The question is always asked, “Will Buckingham St. ever be fully pedestrianised?” The consensus is that “shared-use” is the goal, an urban design approach similar to outside Eichardt’s Hotel and the Beach Street upgrades in Queenstown. No plans are in place to change current streetscape but speed limits are 30kph and drivers are encouraged to be courteous and patient with pedestrians. With funding secured for the restoration of Butlers Wall, there will likely be disruption to Dudley’s Precinct access with works currently planned for Q3 2023. There are ongoing discussions regarding the potential for a longer term one-way system down to Dudley’s and exiting Ramshaw Lane Car Park, minimising traffic movements over the wall, ensuring it’s long-term protection.

Arrowtown is working to live up to its 2020

status as

New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Small Town. Thanks to the APBA, the Night n Day and Athenaeum Hall rubbish bins will be relocated to more discreet but accessible locations and Spark will be rejuvenating our historic phone booths on Buckingham & Library Greens. Finally, you may have noticed a recent makeover of our flower boxes throughout Arrowtown, courtesy of ex-committee member, Jean Britton, who maintains these beautifully on behalf of our community.

ARTS ON TOUR NEW ZEALAND PRESENTS

by

Performed by CASSANDRA WOODHOUSE

Directed by JENNIFER WARD-LEALAND

“Gripping… a memorable and moving look at nature and nurture and what family really means” - The Times

Being a young mum is supposed to be hard - but for Hanna, the only thing she's ever been brilliant at is raising her beloved daughter, Ellie. But then a DNA test reveals staggering news: Ellie is not Hanna’s child - and now her ‘real’ parents want to meet.

Is Hanna obliged to let these strangers into her daughter's life? And how do you explain a mix-up in an overstretched maternity ward to a three-year old? Forced to question what being a parent really means, she makes a drastic decision that will change all their lives.

Sam Potter's funny, heartfelt and compelling one-woman play, Hanna delicately weaves in questions of racial identity, economic privilege, and the lottery of birth - and asks: what does “family” actually mean in today's society?

Hanna is @ Athenaeum Hall, Wednesday 15 March 7.30–9.15 pm.

Tickets $30 from eventfinda.co.nz.

Day 1 we had our Mihi Maioha to welcome new students and families. The purpose of the Mihi Maioha is to welcome new staff, students and whānau onto our school. The current students welcomed all new families with a haka, and then our principal, Chris Bryant, shared a few words of welcome. All students then sung the waiata tautokoour school song - in support.
