pm visit Over the weekend, Arrowtown School hall was booked for a conference, which provided a much needed opportunity for the PTA to raise funds by providing the catering. As part of the conference, there were MP’s’s and PM Jacinda Ardern made a guest appearance. This was a great team effort between students, parents and staff co-ordinated by the PTA, and as a result we have raised $3000 for the school! Local artist Fi Garlick presented Jacinda with a bronze medallion to remember her visit to Arrowtown.
albi & the wolves Arts on Tour NZ and Creative Queenstown are excited to bring you Albi & The Wolves at Athenaeum Hall on 21 May. Albi & The Wolves set fire to stages and fill hearts with hope with their energetic and relatable alternative indiefolk songs. Chris Dent, the proud albino front man Albi, Pascal Roggen, and Michael Young have crafted a stage show that’s brimming with energy and moments to pause for reflection. The trio has a huge sound that is simply created by an acoustic guitar, electric violin, double bass, and their three voices. Since 2014 they have gone from strength to strength touring in Australia, New Zealand, and Rarotonga, and in 2018 they took home the Best Folk Artist Award at the NZVMA’s. What makes the band special is the sense of community that follows them everywhere they go. So whether it’s a connection through dance, laughter, or singing, audiences feel radiant after shows and keep coming back for more. arrowtown village association news wilding work update!
With the change of seasons, the autumnal colours in Arrowtown have been in full force. The Arrowtown wilding programme steered by the AVA has been operating since the strategy was produced in 2017 with public consultation. Based on the outcomes from the Shaping Our Future Arrowtown Community Visioning Report (2017) and the concern about the loss of autumnal colours to wilding conifer spread, the programme has been operating via contractors and volunteers over the last five years. To date, several hundred thousand wilding conifers have been removed from the hillsides behind Arrowtown. The strategy has been to pull back the wilding spread towards the town itself. Due to the sensitivity of the surrounding faces, many of these trees were removed by ground crews or individually lanced by helicopter to ensure no surrounding trees were affected. Volunteers have spent many thousands of hours removing wilding trees from the surrounding hillsides, including trees appearing along the Brow
Peak ridgeline. This has ensured ongoing native regeneration and biodiversity can be protected into the future, and the autumnal colours were not lost to the conifer spread. The programme is currently in its clean up phase, with certain areas being retreated as needed as younger trees grow up that were missed originally. The visual sensitivity of the larch face above Bush Creek is understood. There is currently no plan in place to remove these trees within the project scope, nor the funding to do so. However, the environmental and legal requirements to remove invasive species should be understood, and robust community and stakeholder discussion undertaken about how best to deal with this face.

The Kelliher Collection began in 1956 when Sir Henry Kelliher set up a landscape painting competition that ran for 20 years. After the competition ended, a trust was set up consisting of the works Sir Henry had acquired. The resulting collection is touring selected galleries in the South Island and museum director David Clarke says he is thrilled that Arrowtown’s museum gallery was chosen as one of the venues. “Visitors will be able to see exceptional examples of works by artists who have captured our magnificent landscapes. Artists included are Badcock, McIntyre, Deans, Wheeler, but also Smithers, Hight, and Palmer. These were, and are, artists at the top of their game.” The opening night event on the 2nd of June (6 pm) is a floor talk from Dr Mark Stocker (FSA, FRHistS). Mark has taught at both Canterbury and Otago universities and was Curator of Historical and International Art at Te Papa. Mark’s talk will be followed by refreshments and a viewing. Tickets are $25 per person and are available from the Lakes District Museum and the Arrowtown Pharmacy. Limited numbers.
rsa planting day On the Sunday following Anzac Day, approximately fifty volunteers from the community including RSA members, the Arrowtown Fire Brigade, the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust and the Arrowtown Choppers gathered to plant out the lower part of Soldiers’ Hill. Recently the old pines had been removed. Over three hundred native shrubs were planted, plus some larger exotic trees were put in adding to the RSA officials on Anzac Day – Kirsten Dennison, Linda existing trees already Harrison, Howie Barnes, Rosemary Chalmers, planted on either side George Dennison & Jennifer Cavanagh of the path. The shrubs have a cardboard rabbitproof surround and have a wool matting to suppress weeds. The weather was perfect considering a looming rain cloud and the job was done in under three hours. Some of the hardest workers were children. We finished up with a sausage cooked from the back of a ute and a cold drink. A job well done. Rosemary Chalmers, President of the RSA was delighted with the turnout and the newly planted hill. “It was a fantastic day thanks to everyone that helped. let’s eat! knowhelp yourlet’s local – JEAN & BOB BRITTON Jean and Bob Britton moved permanently to the Wakatipu basin in 1988. They had owned an old cottage in Arrowtown as a holiday home for several years but it wasn’t large enough so they decided to build on the east bank of the Shotover River. In those days the river was the border between Arrowtown and Queenstown and all the local children went to the Arrowtown School. Arrowtown is still Jean and Bob’s village. They are members of the Arrowtown Entertainers, Shotover Country Music Club, Horticultural Society and are involved in Autumn Festival activities, writing and performing in musicals until a few years ago. Jean was President of the Wakatipu Garden Club, Arrowtown Horticultural Society and Central Otago Heritage Roses convenor all at the same time around 2014. The local Heritage Roses members decided to plant old roses around Arrowtown and the Arrowtown Heritage Rose Trail came into being. Plantings are at the cemetery, St Patrick’s Church, the old Jail, the Miners’ Cottages, Rose Douglas and Marshall Parks to name a few. A map of the trail is available at the Museum. Jean is still President of the Horticultural Society which runs the Spring Flower Show. Next year it will be 100 years old and a special show and other celebrations are planned. A few years ago the Society purchased 15 planter boxes for the Arrowtown CBD and together with funds from the flower show and a contribution each year from the APBA, flowers are planted and maintained by committee members. nominate a local – email thelooparrowtown@gmail.com 15
