quiz night The Annual Arrowtown Quiz Night is back after Covid disruptions last year. Friday the 18th of June with a 7pm start and doors opening at 6 pm. Tickets are $30 each person, which includes platters and pizza for each team. Teams can be 4-6 people and we are happy to make up teams for 2 or 3 people. There are prizes for the winning team, and best dressed team and this year’s theme is Fashion Faux Pas. All money raised from the night is going to be used towards another multisport goal on the all-weather surface to make a full playing court. This will be a wonderful facility for the school and the community. scott and jacinda pop by During his short visit to Queenstown this year, Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, joined Jacinda Ardern to lay wreaths at the Arrowtown Cenotaph. A repeat of four years ago when Malcolm Turnbull, the Australian Prime Minister at the time, alongside his NZ counterpart, Bill English, also laid wreaths at Arrowtown. As Jacinda got out of her car she made a slight departure from her schedule, detouring to greet the children outside the Preschool, delighting them and making a memory that they will undoubtedly cherish, before making her way up to the Cenotaph. Arrowtown was represented with the school choir in prime position on the steps and the Scouts lowering and raising the flags. After the ceremony the Scouts got to pose with Clarke Gayford while getting Jacinda to take the photo for Clarke. 3

With the floods in South Canterbury last week, the fires in the MacKenzie Country last year, and the predictions that the alpine fault has a 75% chance of rupturing in the next 50 years, the AVA has started thinking about our community response in the event of a natural disaster. Along with other communities around the Basin and further afield, we are encouraging everyone who lives in or near Arrowtown to sign up to Gets Ready. This system allows a better understanding of the needs and skill sets of people within the community when dealing with a natural disaster. showing off The Wakatipu High School Art Department has filled the Museum Gallery with Painting, Design and Photography work from their high achieving art students in 2020. The Exhibition opened on Wednesday the 2nd and will continue through until Sunday the 4th of July. “Showing Off” highlights the achievements and the enthusiasm of the students as well as showcasing the enormous talent there is at the local High School. Teachers, Leslie Koehn, Rosa Scott, Monica Parker and Abbey Brown were delighted with the initial turnout and justifiably
immensely proud of all the work on display. The exhibition is well worth a visit and there is an opportunity for you to vote for the Public Choice Award, which has kindly been sponsored by Trinity Construction. David Clarke at the Museum describes the works as amazing. Everyone is welcome, so take the chance to wander through the exhibition and discover for yourself, the high standard of work from these clever students.

your flop-free recipe indian spiced cauliflower soup
2 Tbsp olive oil 2 Tbsp cumin seeds 2 Tbsp coriander seeds 1 Tbsp freshly grated ginger 1 tsp ground tumeric 1 onion, chopped 4 cups chicken stock 4 garlic cloves, sliced 4 medium potatoes, cubed 1 head of cauliflower, chopped Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan and saute the onion. Add the spices and toast until fragrant.
Stir in the chicken stock. add the garlic, potatoes and cauliflower and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until soft. Allow to cool. Blend in the pot using a stick blender. Divide into bowls, sprinkle with some toasted cumin seeds and some fresh herbs. Serve with some garlic toast and enjoy!

dead rockers ball Dunedin based three-piece band Bulletproof Convertible is taking their show the Dead Rockers Ball to community halls throughout the country. In what is being referred to as the longest New Zealand tour ever, the band is on a mission to play in a different hall in a different town every month. Saturday 19 June is Arrowtown’s turn, at the Athenaeum Hall. “The Dead Rockers Ball is a simple concept” said Silas Waring, guitarist and vocalist for the band, “we wanted to get live music back to the people by playing shows in the local halls throughout the country just like the old dance hall days”. The band started with the first Dead Rockers Ball in Glenorchy in March 2020 and the concept was immediately successful. It wasn’t intentional but the locals came out dressed as dead rock stars or wearing ball gowns and suits, some even channelling styles from old school, 50’s rockers. “It was classic! Freddie Mercury, Janice Joplin, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie, Sid Vicious and Marilyn Munroe were all dancing their socks off” said drummer Alex Ramsay. Bulletproof Convertible plays their own brand of 50’s inspired original rock, featuring Silas Waring – guitar and vocals, Paul Southworth - double bass and Alex Ramsay - drums.
