A Family Journey Saturday the 20th of February marks the launch of a fourth forum for the Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand. The event will be held at Millbrook Resort, and will be opened by Children’s’ Commissioner, Judge Andrew Becroft. Dyslexia is a family journey and the forum will help unlock the belief systems that are needed to understand and grow with dyslexia. No region of New Zealand is immune from this issue with Arrowtown being no exception. This is a ground breaking event and possibly life changing. Ian Sinclair playing at Arrowtown Ian Sinclair’s is truly an amazing life. He has travelled the world as a reporter for TVNZ and been involved in some of the most dramatic war stories of our lifetime. From Bouganville to Afghanistan he has brought the world to us for more than thirty years. Ian, however, has had a secret life-long love affair with flamenco guitar music, beginning when he was six years old, and he has studied and played ever since. It was this love of flamenco that in a round about way led to his interest in general news journalism and ultimately his career in TVNZ. This awakening happened while following his passion for flamenco to Spain for his OE in the late 70’s This incredible life journey has now led Ian to where he is today, preparing to appear as part of his Arts on Tour adventure around New Zealand, here in Arrowtown in conjunction with Creative Queenstown. The Arts on Tour organization liaises with local community groups to bring the best of musical and theatrical talent to country districts. Ian will be playing at the Athenaeum Hall on Wednesday the 10th of March at 7.30pm. The Disaster Response Scheme funded by QLDC will be compiling important information from residents about local skills and resources, which could assist in the aftermath of a disaster in Arrowtown. The Gets Ready system is being rolled out in other Queenstown Lakes communities and will ensure Arrowtown has a robust disaster-response plan, including vital up-to-date information on community resources / equipment, such as generators, diggers, chainsaws, and residents with first aid / medical skills within the community. If ever Arrowtown is cut off from surrounding areas by a natural disaster, the scheme enables residents to support each other until external support is available. arrowtown business news Many locals don’t know what the APBA is, so here’s more about your local business association. It’s the organisation most locals don’t see, but it helps as an economic driver as well as an advocate for the heritage and environment of the town. The APBA works for the businesses promoting the town and lobbying for solutions to parking, traffic, fibre… in fact anything to do with the CBD. The APBA is over 30 years ago but it created the “Where History Meets Nature” brand six years ago which reflects the town’s gold mining past and the beautiful environment around the town. You may have seen this logo on the guides on our main street and in our calendar which is in its eighth year. The APBA is different than the Arrowtown Village Association (AVA) and the Arrowtown Autumn Festival as it purely represents our businesses. However, it works closely with these and several community groups as it aims for sustainable growth focussing on promotional spend web arrowtown.com
and promoting quieter periods through the website, guide, social media and advertising. We support predator control, native planting, wilding pine eradication, street planting boxes, and the historical lighting project. In March to May we drove the local COVID-19 response online information to support our residents and we recently helped co-ordinate the winning Most Beautiful Small Town entry. The APBA sponsors branding events such as the town’s own Long Lunch, Arrow Sounds Music Festival, Autumn Festival and the Arrowtown Creative Arts Society events. The APBA, mainly funded by a portion of QLDC Commercial Rates, represents retail, activities, accommodation, service industry and restaurants. let’s help let’s eat! rugby preseason games After some great successes in past seasons, Arrowtown Rugby Club is moving forward by building on the club’s strength at senior and junior rugby levels, and now also within the local netball scene. With their home at Jack Reid Park and the fantastic facilities of their clubrooms at the Arrowtown Community Centre, support from club members and the community has been strong. The club will host its annual Junior Rugby Open Day on the evening of Friday 12th March, with skills and drills for budding All Blacks up to 13 years. This will be followed by the first of three preseason

games for the premier grade team, the Arrowtown Bulls, with a game against Belfast RFC, who will travel from Canterbury. With plenty of food and drink on offer, it is a great opportunity to get your first rugby fix for the season while enjoying the evening sun. Additional preseason games will be played at Jack Reid Park on the 20th and 27th of March. Preseason training kicks off at 6 pm on Thursday 18th February. Anyone interested in playing rugby or netball at senior or social level for the club should get in touch via its Facebook page.
