lumify arrowtown for queen’s birthday The incredible sensory experience of LUMA Southern Light Project had to be cancelled this year, but the event’s organisers are encouraging you to bring the LUMA sparkle to your neighbourhood instead.

It’s time to dust off the party lights, get creative with your family or friends and install your own little bit of LUMA magic for Queen’s Birthday Weekend. ‘We want you to bring the light home and show everyone how bright our community can shine,’ says the LUMIFY team.

LUMA co-founder Tim Buckley says the idea for LUMIFY didn’t come from the LUMA organising team. ‘As soon as LUMA was cancelled due to Covid-19, LUMA supporters Janey Rae, Debbie Townsend and Sunny Sky were all instrumental in getting the idea circulating that we needed to do something else instead,’ he says. ‘Involve the community, spread some good vibes and lift everyone’s spirits as we move into winter.’

Over one weekend they came up with the name, set up a Facebook group at facebook.com/ groups/lumifynz, designed a poster and rolled the whole thing out. ‘The best thing about LUMA is that everyone can take part and so LUMIFY is an easy extension of that,’ says Tim. ‘If we can’t bring the lights to the Gardens, bring them out at your place.’

There will be voucher giveaways for people participating in the project, thanks to sponsors.

‘So keep an eye on the LUMIFY page, post some images of your lightshow and tip your hat to Janey, Debbie and Sunny. Not to mention QLDC, Central Lakes Trust, Summit Events and SILO.’ 3

love arrowtown: go local This update from the Arrowtown Promotion & Business Association: Arrowtown folks are giving heartening support for Arrowtown businesses as they visit our shops, restaurants and trails to shop and explore. The APBA encourages our people to revisit their favourite places and explore those that are new. Our businesses are safe and ready for you to visit albeit with required hygiene, spacing and contact tracing measures. The museum and cinema are opening and Millbrook facilities are opening up.

The Love Arrowtown campaign in social media and on arrowtown.com encourages ‘Eat Local’ and ‘Shop Local’ while our residents celebrate the freedom of the lower lockdown level.

Pure Tours has provided a much-needed delivery service for many of our restaurants during level 3 and continues while there is a need.

One of the pleasing surprises of the COVID-19 lockdown was the large number of local residents buying online from our local businesses. Be sure to check our arrowtown.com blogs for the latest news and Facebook to learn about any local news or specials.

Many of us have been stressed by reduced income, others by difficult working conditions from home and we have witnessed heart-warming support in the community for neighbours, friends and some we’ve never met before. Together as a community we will get through the difficulties. We’re not out of the woods but we are putting everything in place to help get through.

Cribbies from Otago and Southland are already popping over in the weekends. Our association anticipates growth in our New Zealand visitors as we move into the ski season and look forward to July school holidays. There may be an additional long weekend thrown in to stimulate the economy. In the meantime we are pleased to see our children back in to school routine, another step towards normal life.
