scottish music on the green Two of Scotland’s most lauded traditional musicians will bring their country’s culture alive at a oneoff free outdoor concert in Arrowtown later this month.

Take a clarsach (harp) and a guitar, shake them together vigorously in the Glasgow music scene and out comes the duo of Rachel Hair and Ron Jappy. Superb instrumentalists with a passion for traditional tunes, they blend the oldest Scottish instrument with a much newer one as if sharing one mind.

There’s no way you’ll be snoozing during a Rachel and Ron performance. At the start of a set you might be expecting spa-ready harp music, but don’t be fooled. From crisp strathspeys and heartfelt airs to virtuosic reels and driving jigs, they’ll take you on an energetic journey around the rich culture of Scotland.

Rachel stands at the forefront of the Celtic harp revival and is unique in performing, teaching and promoting worldwide. As individual awardnominated musicians, Rachel and Ron have together inspired audiences across the globe with performances throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. We encourage all community members to actively engage with our local council should they see items needing attention around the town. The simplest way to do so is make a Request For Service (RFS) by emailing services@ qldc.govt.nz or alternatively for more urgent matters, such as

roaming dogs or irresponsible freedom camping behaviour, by phoning 03 441 0499 (24 hours).

As part of this a reminder in relation to council reserves is that parking of vehicles for sale is not allowed on the grass verge bordering our streets.

The AVA is often requested to make submissions on consent applications. We do not have the resources or time available to do so for every request, but we actively encourage community members to utilise the Shaping Our Future Arrowtown (SOF) report within their personal submissions.

In relation to the proposed Olive Leaf development (St Patrick’s Church site, Hertford St) which the AVA has submitted against a gentle reminder

based on the SOF report, we note a hearing date is set for 11 May. The AVA has strongly objected to the fact that QLDC has chosen a Queenstown location for this high local interest consent hearing, potentially limiting the opportunity for many local submitters to attend. Further details of the proposed process will be provided by the NOLEAF community group, which is holding a Special General Meeting at the bowling club on Thursday 23 January at 6 pm.

a brilliant day at the show The weather played its part for the 105th Lake Hayes A&P Show last Saturday, delivering sunshine and little wind. Secretary Pip Norton says the hand sheep shearing was a great success with big crowds watching world champion Allan Oldfield. The petting zoo from Remarkable Vets, under the new shade sail, went down a treat too.

The highlight in the arena, beside the very well turned out horses and ponies, was provided the district’s children. Dozens of them joined forces to pull a Jones Contracting truck, shifting it in matter of seconds. ‘The kids have obviously been eating plenty of Weetbix in the summer holidays!’ says Pip. Next year’s event is set for Saturday 9 January.

aussie bushfire fundraisers Arrowtowners are going all out supporting our neighbours in bushfire-ravaged Australia by raising funds in novel ways. Here are the ones we’ve heard about.

Volunteer firefighter Todd Weeks has donated three of his photographs (including one of the Police Hut) to the Print Neutral project. At printneutral.com you can buy photographic prints by Kiwi photographers, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to wildfire relief (ends 19 January).

Our restaurants and cafĂŠs are chipping in too. Provisions donated all their coffee sales for a day, which ended up with over $1300 going to Wildlife Rescue South Coast. Aosta has added a special cocktail to its menu called Koala Relief; all proceeds from sales of that cocktail go to Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.

Youngsters Mia and Bailey set up a stall outside the post office selling scrubs and bags and raised $525.50 for families affected by the fires.

And at the Lake Hayes Show the fire brigade went old school, shaking a bucket to collect donations for New South Wales firefighters.

your flop-free recipe salmon with pomegranate glaze

1 fennel bulb, thinly sliced 2 shallots, thinly sliced 2 Tbsp olive oil ½ cup wine dash of whisky salt and pepper 750 g salmon fillet spinach and pomegranate seeds for serving pomegranate glaze

2 Tbsp pomegranate molasses (or paste) 2 Tbsp maple syrup 3 Tbsp miso paste 2 garlic cloves, crushed juice and zest of 1 orange salt and pepper Preheat oven to 180°C. Mix the pomegranate glaze ingredients together in a small saucepan and heat until it starts to simmer. Remove from heat.

On an oven tray, layer the fennel and shallots. Pour olive oil, wine and whisky over and season with salt and pepper. Place the salmon on top, skin side down. Pour the pomegranate glaze over and cook for 15 minutes (or until salmon is cooked to your taste).

Scatter spinach leaves and arrange the fennel and shallots.

Place the salmon on top and drizzle with the remaining pomegranate glaze. Sprinkle with pomegranate seeds and enjoy!

Serves 6.

local of the month This month we celebrate Mike Evans, nominated by Ross Sherwood. Ross had a heart attack before Christmas and wasn’t able to mow his lawns. His neighbour Mike, who he barely knew, turned up with a ride-on and insisted on cutting the grass without payment.

‘I have no idea how he knew of my situation…I was a bit humbled and thanked him for his time. When he left he said he was off to help another person in Lake Hayes who recently had a stroke to see if he could mow their lawns too.’
