arrowtown keeps its councillor Queenstown Lakes District Council will retain the Arrowtown Ward for the 2019 elections following a recent determination by the Local Government Commission.

The extended Arrowtown Ward boundary will now take in McDonnell Road to State Highway 6 and the area of Millbrook.

New maps of ward boundaries are currently being produced and certified, and will be available prior to the 2019 election period.

arrowtown artists on show This year marks 35 years of the Arrowtown Autumn Festival, and the Autumn Festival Art Exhibition at the Lakes District Museum has run every year of those 35. The exhibition attracts well over 200 entries every year, more than 150 of which are displayed, and many previous prizewinners, among them Sitting Reading

Museum director David Clarke has overseen the last 30 autumn festival exhibitions. When he began at the museum in 1989 the art exhibition was ‘trestle tables under fluorescent lights displaying miners cottages made from match sticks, doilies and painted ceramic plates’.

Under his direction the exhibition has stepped up several notches and upgrades of the gallery have created a highly sought-after space that is usually booked out for two years in advance.

This year, including Ray White Arrowtown’s $3500 Premier Painting Award, the exhibition has prizes valued at $6500. The awards will be announced at the official opening of the exhibition on Friday 26 April from 7.30 pm. Entry is $7 and includes a glass of Akarua wine.

The exhibition runs until 26 May – don’t miss the chance to see the work of our best local artists gathered together in one space at the same time. All artworks are for sale.

arrowtown village association news Arrowtown is as busy as it usually is at this time of year, and the AVA has been involved with a number of different projects. proposed district plan

QLDC has recently issued a Notice of Decisions for several chapters in the Proposed District Plan (more details at qldc.govt.nz). This includes changes to zoning within the Basin, and the addition of Jopp Street within the urban town boundary. For those who submitted on this part of the plan change, the appeal period closes in early May. winter air quality

The AVA is working with Otago Regional Council and the Cosy Homes Trust in an attempt to keep improving the air quality over the winter months. They will have a stall at this Sunday’s farmers market, where they will be sharing information and selling firewood moisture meters for the subsidised price of $10. Hopefully we will be able to get some traction on this and clean up the smog. speed limits

QLDC is going through a review of speed limits around the Basin, including Arrowtown. The AVA is generally in favour of the lower speed limit of 40 km/h for the town. When the town had this lower trial limit, the average speed of vehicles dropped to 49 km/h.

However, it is important for everyone to have a look at what is proposed, and either submit their own feedback to QLDC or let the AVA know by Friday 12th when submissions close. community planting

autumn festival memories With the Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival coming up in a couple of weeks, we sat down for a chat with festival veteran Reg McTaggart.

Reg has been involved from day 1 of the first festival in 1985. The festival was the brainchild of his friend Ross Martin. ‘At that stage Arrowtown wasn’t doing very good at all in the off season,’ says Reg, ‘so he had this idea to put people in beds.’

The early festivals had a gold mining theme (residents were encouraged to dress in period costume) and there was a focus on entertainment. ‘Back then it was easy to close the street so the stage would be set up between the hall and Night n Day or in front of the museum…Each day we had something happening. It would start with Alan Dennison and his vintage tractors. Kevin Lynch, the Crown Terrace Hillbillies, the Women’s Institute Choir, the Buckingham Belles, the Miners Band and a few vocalists would perform to keep this rolling along for two hours.’

The festival was in fact the launching pad for two of these local institutions. ‘The Miners Band probably never would have happened if it hadn’t been for the festival. And the same with the Buckingham Belles,’ Reg says.

For years there was a country music concert with just three bigname acts, including Suzanne Prentice and Patsy Riggir. Reg is a country musician himself, playing all over Central Otago and northern Southland for many years with Kawarau County. The band is long gone but Reg still gigs today.

From the first festival to this one, and no doubt into the future, Reg has worked behind the scenes running the sound system. When he was awarded life membership of the Autumn Festival in 2009 he thought he had been at every show at every festival. That’s no longer the case – his gear isn’t capable of handling very big events like La Nuit d’Extraordinaire – but look out for him at just about every other event that requires a sound system, from the official opening to The Basin’s Got Talent on the last day.

your flop-free recipe cheesy chicks – mini cheese balls 400 g cream cheese 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp lemon zest salt and pepper 350 g jar whole black olives 2 cups finely shredded cheese round crackers 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese carrot rounds (for beaks & feet) mixture and form it into a ball. whole peppercorns (for eyes) Refrigerate for another hour.

Using a mixer, combine the cream Before serving, roll each ball of cheese, Worcestershire sauce, cheese into the finely shredded lemon zest, and salt and pepper cheddar cheese to cover. Place to taste. Refrigerate for 1 hour. each ball on a round cracker.

Drain the jar of olives. Using Cut wedges from carrot rounds for your fingers, cover each beaks and feet and press on. Add olive completely with about black peppercorns for eyes.
