cromwell artists in arrowtown Next week the 14-strong collective Hullabaloo Art is heading over from Cromwell for their biennial exhibition in Arrowtown.

The show at the museum gallery will have its opening on Friday 10 August from 5.30 pm, when you can browse the art and jewellery and chat with some of Cromwell’s best artists.

The exhibition runs until 30 September.

fashion awards winner Fashion newcomer Jennifer Cavanagh has taken on the pros at the Hokonui Fashion Design Awards and come back a winner.

Jennifer has had success in the Art 2 Wear competition at the Autumn Festival, but this is the first time she has made a complete fashion outfit – let alone the three she created for her entry in the Collections category. ‘I needed some guidance and to teach myself to sew,’ she says. ‘Some ideas were created from making mistakes that I then benefited from!’

Almost all the materials she used were recycled, including decommissioned uniforms from her day job with Fire and Emergency NZ. ‘Having limited materials to work with and how best to get the most from all the fabric in front of me was confronting,’ Jennifer says. ‘Now the outfits are complete, I can see the rewards. It makes up for my pin cushion fingers and the many hours of unpicking!’

Jennifer went down to the awards at the weekend with a posse of friends. ‘When my models had taken to the catwalk, I was overcome with pride and achievement. It did take a second to realise that it was my designs on the catwalk. The moment was very surreal.’

When the awards ceremony started, Jennifer had no expectations. ‘I was just happy that I was chosen for such a great show.’ The first award, for Best Use of Fabric over all categories, was announced and Jennifer was shocked to hear her name. ‘I basically needed to pick my jaw off the floor!’ Her designs also won a merit award.

All in all, Jennifer says it has been an amazing experience. ‘I cannot wait to see what the future holds for me.’

councillor comment This update on Arrowtown goings-on from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: I have been enjoying the tui, bellbirds and waxeyes that have been passing through my backyard this winter. And it’s no coincidence the increased birdlife follows the first year of Predator Free Arrowtown. I tip my hat to these dedicated volunteers who have rat, stoat and possum traplines in place from Brow Peak and Bush Creek to Arrow Junction. The next phase is for neighbourhoods to band together and get a trap or two set on every residential street in our village. Keep your eyes on the PFA (@PFArrowtown) and AVA (@arrowtownvillage) Facebook pages to snare your street a subsidised trap.

While on the environmental topic, the early harvest of Coronet Forest has been confirmed by council with a harvest outline plan currently being consulted on. Some say the fight against wilding trees is futile, however while the will is there for the community to protect our unique landscapes then QLDC will continue to work alongside regional and central government partners and volunteer groups like the Arrowtown Choppers to rid our surrounds of these noxious weeds.

If you’ve been for a walk into town or visited the Four Square recently you would have seen the new rubbish bin banks.

bingo night is back

It’s bingo but not as your nana knows it! After last year’s hugely successful fundraiser, the Arrowtown School PTA is bringing the bingo balls back to the bowling club on Friday 18 August. Hosted by the hilarious Queen Fee Fee, this is a risqué comedy night which they guarantee will have you laughing from beginning to end.

Throw in Guilty Pleasures DJ Scotty and prizes donated by the supportive local business community and it’s starting to sound like the perfect winter night out.

The $30 ticket price includes supper (bring cash for the bar and raffles) and tickets are available on the Arrowtown School Community Facebook page @arrowtownpta. The event is strictly R18.

training to save a life Twenty locals are now better set up to save a life after cardiac arrest with defibrillator training organised by the Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association. Under the guidance of Shelley Klempel of St John and Todd Weeks from the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade the participants learned how to operate an Automated External Defibrillator like the ones kept in heated cabinets outside the post office and the bakery.

‘The participants were really interested and keen to know how the defib unit works and learned that it’s very simple,’ says the APBA’s Sue Patterson. ‘I felt a lot more comfortable afterwards and I know from verbal feedback after the training that everyone was very positive and more confident to go ahead and use the unit.’

soul sisters succeed

Annual General Meeting

Arrowtown’s Kaye Adamson and Janey Winders, half of the Southern Soul Sisters team of former schoolmates, have completed the Sunshine Coastrek in Queensland.

The team crossed the finish line of the fundraising walk 10 hours 50 minutes after they started. ‘It was a tough 60 km,’ says Janey, ‘but we did it!’ They hit the Coloundra start line at 6.15 am and on their way to Noosa walked beaches and streets, took a ferry ride, dipped into bush and swamps and met a yellow-bellied black snake.

‘What a day and what an amazing experience!’

The team may have been just a sliver outside their goal time – Janey does point out the walk was 2.3 km longer than the advertised 60 km – but they absolutely smashed their fundraising goal. So far they’ve raised about $4500 for the Fred Hollows Foundation, more than twice the $2000 they hoped to collect.

kapa haka clean sweep Arrowtown School’s Kamuriwai Kapa Haka group returned from the Queenstown Winter 10s competition on July 21 with enough trophies to fill a trophy cabinet. Fifty tamariki are part of the group, which won every section they competed in: Boy Leader; Girl Leader; Haka; Kakahu (costume); Competition Section Poi, Waiata-a-Ringa, Haka; and, of course, overall winners.

The group performed for the whole school this week in celebration of their success, and they are now looking ahead to their next competition, Nga Putangitangi in Invercargill in October.

Started Arrowtown School on Monday 23 July.

Oscar had a great first day at school.

200 g sunflower seeds 100 g sesame seeds 60 g ground flaxseed/linseed 30 g husk 2 cups water salt to taste Preheat oven to 160°C. Mix all the ingredients together and leave to stand for at least 10 minutes.

Line two baking trays with baking paper. Divide the mixture in two and spread it as flat as possible without gaps on the trays.

Bake for approximately 1 hour or until lightly brown.

Allow to cool then break up into pieces.

Store in an air-tight container.
