fire danger eases Fire and Emergency NZ have announced that the total fire ban has been lifted and instead a restricted fire season put in place. This means that while the fire danger is no longer extreme, it is still high and you must have a permit to light a fire in the outdoors. Contact Otago Fire and Emergency on 0800 673 473 for more info.

Creative Queenstown has launched its 2018 season of Arts on Tour NZ shows with the great news that five of the shows will be in Arrowtown – and for the first time you will be able to buy for just $100 a season pass for all seven events. The programme runs the gamut from stand-up comedy to a tour de force by a legend of New Zealand theatre with a couple of musical stops in between. Just a couple of weeks away, on 16 March at the Heritage Queenstown, comedians Nick Rado and Raybon Kan will attempt to solve problems posed by the audience. Then in April at the Athenaeum Penny Ashton brings a very Dickensian orphaned hero Olive Copperbottom and a squalid gaggle of Victorian characters to poxridden London life in a musical one-woman show. Next up, in May at the Sherwood, duo Hopetoun Brown (the horn section of Supergroove) are joined on stage by arguably the country’s finest trumpet player, Finn Scholes. in July Elisabeth Easther’s funny and sophisticated play Seed hits the Arrowtown stage, following four women as they try to get pregnant, stay pregnant or become unpregnant. August sees Michael Hurst in Arrowtown in No Holds Bard playing an ageing Shakespearean actor confronting his demons – problem is, his demons are as crazy as he is. Come October, we’re back to music – folk music this time – with Adam McGrath and the Roaring Days. Rounding off the season in November David Ladderman and Lizzie Tollemache return to the Athenaeum stage with a tribute to Harry Houdini involving recreations of his famous feats along with the stories of how they came to be. For more information go to @creativequeenstown on Facebook. To buy a season pass, email

first lilliput library Arrowtown has got its first Lilliput Library, thanks to an initiative of the Catalyst Trust. Inside a cabinet newly installed outside 10B Norfolk St is a selection of books that are free for anyone to take away. ‘You don’t have to return the books,’ says the library’s guardian, Monika Fry. ‘If you’re walking by and see a book that interests you, take it home. Next time you’re passing you may want to return it or pop another book in the Lilliput Library. It’s all about the love of reading.’ The little library was built by Steve Phillips using materials supplied by Mega Mitre 10. Monika says it’s already attracting interest. ‘Within 30 minutes of it going in there was someone peering inside and this morning I noticed books gone and one added!’ Monika says that all readers are welcome to check it out and hopes that people will start leaving children’s books, which they are short of. 5

nz house & garden tours Around 200 enthusiastic volunteers are needed for this year’s sold-out NZ House & Garden House Tour in Queenstown on Friday 23 March 2018 (the event hub is in Arrowtown). Now in its tenth year, the NZ House & Garden House Tours have grown into the country’s largest charity house tour event. In 2017, the tours around New Zealand raised over $65,000 for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Volunteers are needed for four-hour shifts and will be given a ticket to visit the rest of the houses on the tour during the other half of the day. Erika Rozecka-Lewis from the Breast Cancer Foundation says, ‘It’s a wonderful event, and a rare opportunity to see some of the inspiring homes in the Queenstown area while helping raise money for a great cause. We urgently need both volunteers and supervisors, so don’t be shy!’ Email or call Erika on 09 304 1220.

lake hayes update Lake Hayes may have been returned to the locals with the ban on freedom camping, but the water quality is still not good for swimming. After the E Coli outbreak earlier in the summer, a run of hot weather has led to the development of toxic algae that can harm humans and dogs. For the latest status of the water quality, check out and follow Otago Regional Council on Facebook. 9

There’s been a changing of the guard at Arrowtown Rugby Club, with Amy Wilson-White stepping down as junior club administrator. New liaison Emma Campbell of Coaching Solutions Queenstown says, ‘Amy has done an excellent job over a number of seasons for the club and she deserves a huge thank-you for all her time, effort and commitment.’ Registrations for the 2018 season close on 19 March 2018 and the season is expected to start at the end of April. Emma says the club is looking for coaches too. ‘We’re happy to put you through training and you're welcome to team up with a friend as cocoaches. Makes life easier for everyone and if you're turning up to practice every week anyway we'd love to utilise you!’ The good news is that in return for their time coaches will not be charged for their child’s subs. For more information, go to @arrowtownrugby on Facebook or email Emma
