be safe in the water With all the hot weather – and with Lake Hayes not such an appealing destination – lately the Arrow River has been the place to cool down with a splash in the water. A word of warning, however. Water levels have been very low and swimming holes that were deep last year are not so deep this year. Be sure to check the water before you jump in!

freedom camping changes Local residents have been increasingly vocal lately about the problems caused by freedom camping in the Wakatipu. Lake Hayes has been a lightning rod for the debate, with families feeling they have lost their favourite swimming spot to hundreds of tourists who dominate the reserve. Some of them wash their dishes – and their bodies – in the lake and go to the toilet in the bushes. Arrowtown graphic designer Melissa Hinves is one of those speaking out. ‘I've had enough of the abuse of a local reserve. It stinks when we try to go there with kids,’ she says. ‘I’d say more than half of locals I have talked to over the holiday period have said they have chosen not to go to Lake Hayes as it is so revolting. These are locals who have regularly used Lake Hayes reserve for many, many years.’ Queenstown Lakes District Council is well aware of the problem, and last week Mayor Jim Boult, who lives next to Lake Hayes himself, announced that the reserve will close to overnight campers. ‘About time,’ says Melissa. ‘Freedom camping is a privilege and one that should be used with respect for the environment you are in.’ Campaigners like Justine Farquharson, who started a petition that has attracted thousands of signatures, believe that banning freedom camping from some reserves only shifts the problem elsewhere, and that the answer lies in changing the culture of freedom camping. QLDC says that freedom camping will not be banned throughout the district, and has asked the community for other ideas on how to deal with the issue. ‘We’re genuinely looking for community-led solutions as part of this discussion, and they will be considered as part of our long term review,’ says Jim Boult. ‘All reasonable options are on the table and I’d encourage anyone with an interest to take the time to leave their thoughts online.’ You can find in QLDC’s Freedom Camping Changes survey at qldc.govt.nz. 3

Under discussion will be: • Current status of the Arrowtown Wilding Strategy outlined at the August public meeting • Overview of the management plan aligned with the strategy • Funding • Timing of upcoming tree removal work on Tobins Face • QLDC update on Coronet Forest harvest We encourage you to come along to discuss these critical issues! chairperson@arrowtownvillage.nz 4

old-time country music Musicians Flora Knight and Sean Donald have dedicated their young careers to gathering songs, tunes and stories from small communities around the world. And soon they will share their traditional country music, from ragtime fiddle tunes to mournful country classics, at an Arrowtown gig. Fiddle player and singer Flora (the Eastern, the Lonesome Pine Specials) was raised in New Zealand, while singer and guitar picker Sean (the All Day Breakfast Stringband) was raised in Canada. Their music has been plucked from a time when music and dancing at the local hall was all there was in the way of entertainment in rural communities. When the men would ask women to dance, and people shared stories amongst themselves. Flora and Sean will be playing the Blue Door on Thursday 1 February at 8.30 pm. Admission is free, thanks to Creative Queenstown and Arts on Tour New Zealand. 9

your flop-free recipe plum frosé

1 cup water ½ cup caster sugar few fresh sprigs mint 10 plums 2 cups rosé wine (or lemonade) ice cubes Bring water to the boil. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar until dissolved. Muddle mint leaves and add to the mixture. Pop the plums in whole and bring back to a gentle boil. When the plums are soft, add the rosé and stir. Remove from heat and strain mixture to remove stones. Allow to cool. Put the ice cubes in a blender along with the cooled frosé mixture. Blend until the ice is well combined. Turn mixture out onto a tray with sides and pop into the freezer until the frosé has thickened and is starting to freeze. Turn the mixture out into chilled glasses and pop a straw or spoon in and enjoy a refreshing cooling treat. To make a child friendly version just replace the wine with some lemonade. Makes 3–4 servings 10
