jim shaw – local hero On Saturday night, while the rest of the country was watching the election results come in, the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade was doing something more important: celebrating 50 years of continuous service by Senior Firefighter Jim Shaw.

It was a celebration that almost never was, because Jim’s career in the fire brigade could have ended before it began. Jim says that as a 20-year-old motor mechanic at his first training he had an initiation prank played on him that ended with him being blasted in the face with water, and he nearly told the chief ‘where he could stick his fire brigade’. Fortunately for the brigade and for the community, he not only persisted but he thrived, and just two years later went on to become one of the youngest Chief Fire Officers ever.

Jim has seen huge changes in both Arrowtown and the brigade over the last 50 years – he says the only thing that has stayed constant is the strong community spirit. When he joined Arrowtown’s population was less than 200, the brigade had a dozen firefighters that turned out in a Land-Rover perhaps 18 times a year, and almost entirely to structure fires. Now the 2

population is nearing 3000 with over 650,000 tourists and 25 firefighters turn out four vehicles over 170 times a year to crashes, medical emergencies, vegetation fires – and, only occasionally, structure fires.

Embracing rather than resisting change has been the key to Jim’s longevity: ‘I’m proud of the way the brigade has changed with the times.’

While other brigades were digging in their heels over a succession of organisational shifts in the 1970s, Jim was looking at ways to make it work for Arrowtown. In 1972 he successfully campaigned to get a full-size appliance and then set about rebuilding the station to accommodate it. The brigade members managed to do this on their own, using fundraising,

donated materials and voluntary labour, and this remains the proudest achievement of his 26year tenure as chief.

At the age of 70 Jim is still an operational firefighter, driving the fire appliance to calls and sharing his knowledge and experience as new members come through. And in the last few years he has spent a huge amount of time installing free long-life smoke alarms for ‘elderly’ residents, some of whom are younger than him.

As current brigade CFO Murray Forward put it in his speech before Jim was presented with his 50 Year Medal, heroism can be about more than physical strength. Sometimes, he said, it is about 'ordinary people doing extraordinary things for a greater humane purpose'. Jim Shaw, who has dedicated almost his entire adult life to the Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade, is one of those heroes.

On Saturday night the brigade held its annual honours night in conjunction with the celebration of Jim Shaw.

The major awards were: Gordy Gibb (Life Honorary Member); Greg Potter (bar to Long Service and Good Conduct Medal); Willem Delport (5 Year Medal); and Amber Hollis (Firefighter of the Year). Victoria Tovey and Todd Weeks brought the house down (and possibly shocked the distinguished guests) with their extremely entertaining new members’ speeches.

kapa haka fundraiser The Arrowtown grapevine has been buzzing about how well the hangi and kapa haka night at the school went.

There was a big crowd for the junior performance at the hangi lifting. ‘It was lovely to see all those families turn out to enjoy the performance and have the experience of a hangi potato!’ says Melissa Hinves.

Melissa credits the senior roopu with one of their most polished performances that evening.

‘We have heard how impressed attendees were with the positive and supportive atmosphere in the room, and we agree. It really is amazing how much the 4

community has got behind our kapa haka.’

There isn’t yet a final tally of money raised, but the amount is more than organisers hoped for. Funds raised will go back to the children to support their kapa haka and Te Reo learning. ‘We cannot thank everyone enough. It was a wonderful night.’

salon success The team from Oddfellows Beauty Lodge have returned from the inaugural NZ Association of Registered Beauty Professionals industry awards in Wellington with smiles on their faces, after picking up the runner-up spot in Clinic/ Spa of the Year from hundreds of entries, as well as a social media award.

To enter Clinic/Spa of the Year, owner Sam Gent had to provide meticulously prepared documents covering everything from business and marketing plans to sustainable practices and health and safety.

Sam says their volunteer work with the elderly was an important element in their success, and they are setting up a charity called Saving Grace, which will encourage other salons around the country to follow in their footsteps.

The awards were held at a red carpet event at Te Papa and staff and a few clients went as a group of 10. The staff dressed with an ‘Oddfellows Princess’ theme, mainly because team member Esther loves Disney princesses and wanted to wear her Elsa from Frozen dress. ‘We are very proud to be a winner from such a tiny salon in Arrowtown,’ says Sam. ‘We continue to love what we do, with people we love working with and on.’

gibbston treasure hunt A treasure hunt that engages both body and brain, rogaining is a great way to get out into the hills. You can participate your own level so you don’t need to be super-fit – in fact it’s perfect for a fun family day out.

On Saturday 7 October the Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust will be putting on a rogaine at Gibbston, with funds raised going to two Arrowtown causes: the police hut restoration and the national goldpanning champs. Armed with a map, teams of 2 to 5 will roam the vineyards and countryside in search of checkpoints. The easy/nearby ones are worth a few points, the hard-to-get are worth more. You have up to 3 hours to to collect as many points as you can, and discover some interesting goldfields sites along the way.

Registration starts at noon, there’s a briefing and maps are issued at 1 pm, the start is at 2 pm and there will be a barbecue at 5 pm.

your flop-free recipe baked rice pudding

anise apricots 450 g preserved apricots apricot liquid 1 cup water 1 Tbsp honey 2 whole star anise 75 g short grain white rice 50 g caster sugar 25 g butter, diced 1.2 litres full cream milk 1 vanilla pod, split open Put the apricots into a pan with the liquid, water, honey and star anise. Simmer for ten minutes until fragrant. Leave to cool.

Preheat the oven to 150°C and lightly butter a 1.5 litre ovenproof dish. Put the rice, sugar, butter, milk and vanilla pod into the dish and give it a good stir. Bake for 1½ hours, stirring in the skin every 30 minutes for the first hour. Leave to bake for the last 30 minutes, so that a goldenbrown skin forms on top.

Remove the vanilla pod and serve the hot rice pudding with the apricots. Serves 4 10
