a grandfather’s war story

daffodil day A bevy of volunteers co-ordinated

by Margaret James have ensured another successful Daffodil Day appeal in Arrowtown, raising about $6500 for the Cancer Society – money that will be used locally to help with things like travel for people dealing with cancer.

Margaret would like to thank her many volunteers who gave their time to help.

When they were training in Egypt before going into action at Gallipoli, New Zealand troops made the most of their time off from route marches and bayonet practice. These young men, many of them on their first overseas experience, fitted in so much sightseeing, drinking and indulging in Cairo’s vices that they earned the nickname ‘Massey’s Tourists’, after prime minister William Massey. Then April 1915 came around and life changed instantly – but the name for the New Zealanders stuck.

In Bill Massey’s Tourists, coming to Arrowtown next weekend, playwright, performer and choreographer Jan Bolwell plays her adolescent self, encouraging her grandfather Arthur (one of those tourists) to talk about his experiences in World War I. The fact that Arthur served with the Otago Mounted Rifles gives the story special resonance around here. What follows is the gripping, painful and sometimes funny tale of a young Kiwi soldier and his survival amid the devastation of Passchendaele. It is a story that also features song and dance.

Critics have received this show, Jan’s fifth as playwright, warmly. Reviewer Terry McTavish said, ’This exceptional performer, Jan Bolwell, is blessed with an irrepressible joie-de-vivre that communicates itself instantly to the audience, so that her grandfather’s story is illuminating and memorable, but also surprisingly enjoyable.’ Actor-director Raymond Hawthorne said he was 'knocked for six' by it: ‘A terrific script. A great performance. A tale well told.’

changes at the museum If you’ve been down Buckingham Street lately, you can hardly have missed the hoardings outside the museum. Change is afoot, and we talked to museum director David Clarke about it.

The hoardings are protecting work on storage for the museum’s growing collection, he says. ‘One of the biggest problems many museums face is the lack of storage space so we are utilising an area of the museum’s site that is not being used.’

To ensure the extension does not impact the historic BNZ building visually, it is being built below the road. The ground-level roof will provide a space for sitting and congregating, and for new plantings.

David and the staff are looking forward to having the extra space. ‘We have never really had a facility where we can assess objects, clean them and store them adequately.’ He says the project will take about 16 weeks to complete and the builders will SPECIALISES IN: try to keep footpath disruption to a Interior | Exterior minimum.

kamuriwai kapa haka Arrowtown School’s kapa haka group have been having an exciting time of it lately, says parent Melissa Hinves: ’Both the junior and senior roopu are relishing opportunities to perform and are proud to represent Arrowtown School.’

Last week 76 members of the junior roopu travelled to Invercargill to perform at Murihiku Polyfest.

‘They loved the whole experience and performing on stage.’ Then, on Friday, the senior roopu performed at the Audi Quattro NZ Winter Games opening ceremony, once again wowing the assembled dignitaries, skiers and crowd.

In September the whole school will be embracing Te Wiki ō Te Reo Māori, with children experiencing Maori language and culture. This will build up to a big fundraising event, a hangi and kapa haka night on Saturday 16 September.

Melissa says this will be a great opportunity for the community to experience traditionally cooked hangi food and cultural entertainment.

Tickets are on sale at the school and the museum at $65 per person, which includes the traditionally cooked hangi supper. Funds raised go to support Te Reo learning in Arrowtown School.

your flop-free recipe sticky date pudding

1½ cups dates, pitted and chopped 1 tsp baking soda 1 cup boiling water 100 g butter, chopped 1 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp ground allspice ½ tsp ground cardamon ¾ cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 cup self-raising flour sauce 150 g butter, chopped 1 cup cream 1½ cups brown sugar zest of one lime and one lemon Preheat oven to 180°C. Line baking pan with paper.

Put the dates in a bowl, sprinkle over the baking soda and add the boiling water. Leave to stand for about 5 minutes or until the dates soften.

Transfer mixture to a food processor. Add the butter, spices and sugar. Process until combined. Add the eggs and flour. Mix until just combined. Pour mixture into a baking tin lined with baking paper.

Bake for 30 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool in the tin before cutting into desired form –­my preferred is squares but your options are wide open! Use whatever shape you want – go heart, unicorn, star...you are only limited by your imagination (or cookie cutters).

For the sauce, heat butter, cream, brown sugar and zest in a small saucepan. Stir over low heat until the butter has melted. Bring to a low boil and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.

Serve the pudding on a plate and pour the sauce over. Garnish with fresh mint and enjoy.
