arrowtown rocks the ‘80s

local musician returns Arrowtown boy Ciaran McMeeken is flying high with the release of his selftitled debut album on August 4, an album that takes a step away from his former classic singersongwriter sound, with songs that fuse rock, blues, swing, soul, and jazz.

Ciaran, who left Arrowtown for Dunedin part way through his childhood, last toured as opening act on the Avalanche City and Ronan Keating tours in 2016, and his run of shows in support of the album will be his first headlining tour.

He will be playing at the Sherwood on Saturday 5 August, tickets available through Eventfinda.

The Chain is a hilarious rock comedy with four back to back nights at the Athenaeum Hall.

This is the latest serving of original theatre from the acclaimed Whirlwind Productions NZ. It offers a poignant look at the realities and complexities of the bonds between women and the power of forgiveness with a generous portion of ‘80s classics.

Five friends form an unusual alliance; The 'Stevie Nicks Appreciation Club'. Their ambition is to win 'Athol's Got Talent' and the thousand dollars that goes with it. Unfortunately the task proves much tougher than expected and they enlist the help of a weathered but charming professional musician, 'Billy Joe'. As Billy Joe goes to work the bonds within the group begin to unravel.

The Chain is written and directed by Margaret O’Hanlon and animated by a group of the most talented musical comedy actors in the Wakatipu: Fiona Stephenson, Lisa Moore, Tiffany Mitchell, Charlotte Graf, Rebeca Barnes & Holly Hoogvliet.

“It was about time I wrote a comedy, and one for the girls”, Margaret explains. “This past year was a very hard one for me, so I was in the mood to celebrate the things that make hard times worthwhile - friendships. And I was in the mood to laugh!”

The performance is amplified by music from the legendary Fleetwood Mac (especially Stevie Nicks) and other artists from the era of excess.

The Chain will be at the Athenaeum Hall from Wed 16 August to Sat 19 August at 7.30-10 pm. You can buy tickets at eventfinda.co.nz or at the door. Tickets $39–$45 or cheese platter for 10 (for table seats only) $100.

councillor comment From Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: There is always a real challenge maintaining our soft road edges and pathways at this time of year with the freeze and thaw effect making our town resemble an 1860's mud bog. Normally council will schedule maintenance work on these pathways and road verges at the end of winter but the worst parts are being done now and over the next 2 weeks. We are also moving to accelerate work on the library carpark to remedy the mud bog cars have created there. To round off the mud bog theme, council staff and the Arrowtown Planning Advisory Group have been working very hard to come up with a nicely landscaped solution on the Ramshaw Lane river carpark. We can only begin the works to increase capacity and resurface the carpark when the season is right for construction. Our team is currently preparing a detailed design for the carpark and will move to tendering and procurement in readiness for a start in September or October, weather permitting.

I look forward to seeing plenty of you at the Wilding Tree public meeting at the Athenaeum Hall 7:30pm on Tuesday 8 August.

reducing plastic bags Boomerang Bags is a not for profit community initiative cropping up all over the world.

Boomerang Bags Queenstown started up at the beginning of the year, heralded by two local woman Fiona Davies and Georgia Todd.

Since its start up just over 250 bags have been made by volunteers at sewing bees across the Wakatipu. Arrowtown holds a monthly sewing bee on the second Friday of every month, the next is on Friday 11 August in the Arrowtown Community Rooms (next to tennis courts) from 7–9.30 pm.

Material is all donated, some volunteers bring their machines, pins, scissors and others can just show up and are put to work on ‘non-sew’ jobs. The atmosphere is light, fun and you always meet new people and feel accomplished at the end. The idea is to replace single plastic bag use with recycled material bags which are borrowed at local shops and bought back the next time one is passing by.

Get an early start on “Many people experience your Christmas craft forgetting their recycled bags, so we hope to have depots all over projects this year! the area so a plastic bag is not needed instead.”

The first lot of Boomerang Bags will become available at the Arrowtown 4Square from Friday 8 September. All bags have custom designed logos on them screen printed by Impact as the sponsor of Boomerang Bags Queenstown.

wilding plan takes shape Wilding conifers in the hills around Arrowtown are harming the unique character that makes the town both an appealing place to live and world famous for its beautiful autumn colours. Something needs to be done, and fast. That’s where the Arrowtown Wilding Group (AWG) comes in.

The AWG is made up of a number of Arrowtown groups and individuals with an interest in eradicating wilding conifers and it has been working with Soho Properties, which owns the hills behind Arrowtown, Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group, Arrowtown Promotion and Business Association, DOC and QLDC. Over the last few months the group has created a strategy document that maps a pathway for both wilding control and maintaining Arrowtown’s autumn colours, and it is now ready to share it with the community.

At the meeting at the Athenaeum Hall at 7.30 pm on August 8 you’ll learn about the strategy, and hear presentations from stakeholders, including Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group, QLDC and Arrowtown Choppers, and get an overview of the Mahu Whenua QEII covenant on the hills surrounding Arrowtown.

your flop-free recipe luscious lemon slice crust

1 cup almond flour 1/3 cup raw sugar 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 Tbsp melted butter filling

3 eggs 3/4 cup raw sugar 1/4 cup rice flour 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice zest of 1 lemon 1/4 cup shredded coconut Preheat oven to 180°C. Spray a baking dish (approx 24 x 24 cm) with cooking spray.

To make the crust, stir all four ingredients together in a bowl until combined. Press this mixture evenly into the bottom of the baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes.

To make the filling, combine the eggs, sugar, rice flour, lemon juice and lemon zest. Mix with a hand mixer for a couple of minutes.

Pour the lemon filling over the baked crust mixture. Return the slice to the oven and bake for a further 25 minutes until set. The lemon layer should be firm.

Allow to cool before sprinkling the top with the shredded coconut.
