building causes division A multipurpose building proposed for the corner of Hertford and Merioneth Streets is meeting with resistance from residents. The ‘Olive Leaf Building’ is planned for the site of the old cottage to the right of St Patrick’s Church and would be used by both the church and the wider community.

Internationally acclaimed architect Fred van Brandenburg, working pro bono, has designed the building with a roof to resemble an olive leaf, as in ‘to extend the olive branch’ but that metaphor doesn’t seem to be working with residents who see the contemporary building as inappropriate for Arrowtown’s historic zone.

Among them is Wayne Hulls, who has formed the NOLEAF group, which has been garnering support via email and a website.

In a pamphlet, Fred van Brandenburg says that the two-level building will have minimal visual impact as it is sunk 2.2 m below the ground. The only portion above the ground will be the stoneclad olive leaf roof, which will ‘seem to emerge naturally out of the ground.’ He says that, by being progressive, the building ‘faithfully reflects the heritage Mary McKillop has left for us.’

Wayne Hulls and NOLEAF, on the other hand, believe that it does not meet the District Plan requirement that new buildings should be in keeping with the special character of Arrowtown and is encouraging as many residents as possible to make submissions opposing the resource consent application, which is due to happen before the end of November.

councillor comment This update on local government matters from Arrowtown councillor Scott Stevens: Sometimes a change is as good as a holiday and the mood around council is certainly refreshed after the recent elections brought in five new councillors and a new mayor. Jim Boult can almost claim Arrowtown resident status, living on the edge of Lake Hayes, and there is no doubt he has a keen affection for our village. I remember his words at the AVA hosted Mayoral Debate, about his long connection with Arrowtown and it is great to have someone leading the council with personal knowledge of the issues we face here. That means much less explaining and much more doing.

We all know the village has jumped ahead in leaps and bounds but the service levels have been stuck back in times gone by when we were a sleepy little backwater.

Last year we had over 600,000 visitors to Arrowtown. That is a seriously big number. And during New Zealand school holidays when all our holiday homes are full of families the resident These gorgeous population triples.

I’ve been representing Arrowtown on QLDC for 18 months now and my focus for Arrowtown has not changed. I want Arrowtown to be a better place tomorrow than it is today. To achieve that we need to set the bar high. I’m confident we have a new council and mayor supportive of bettering the Arrowtown experience for residents and visitors.

Now it’s time to make it happen.

wasp season looms Arrowtown’s wasp man Russell Heckler is warning that this summer could bring a plague of wasps. He hasn’t yet started his annual campaign to kill wasp nests but already the signs are bad with a high number of lone wasps emerging from woodpiles and on the prowl. ‘After the mild winter I’m expecting to be busy in mid December,’ he says.

Russell says we can act now to stop the wasps ever building their nests. ‘The ones to watch out for are the huge ones, the queens.

They’re twice the size of a normal wasp.’ Residents can deal to them by buying a wasp trap from the Arrowtown post office.

Russell recommends sugary water or beer as bait but, he says, ‘the instructions are all there with the trap!’

Russell is currently using poison supplied by QLDC to kill nests around Arrowtown for free, but he is hopeful that the availability of a new bee-friendly wasp bait called Vespex will make him redundant.

It’s not particularly cheap and you have to pass an online test to use it, but the ecotoxin has been proven extremely effective in trials, reducing wasp numbers by up to 98 per cent. Perhaps it will be the answer to Arrowtown’s burgeoning wasp problem.

250 g butter, softened 1 cup (155 g) icing sugar 1 egg 1 tsp almond essence 1 tsp vanilla extract 350 g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp salt 100 g whole almonds 1 tube red decorating icing Combine butter, sugar, egg, almond essence and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add flour, baking powder and salt. Refrigerate for 20 to 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 165ÂşC. Lightly grease baking trays. Remove dough from refrigerator in small amounts. One at a time, scoop 1 large teaspoon onto waxed paper and use the paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped biscuit. Press one almond into 10
