trolley derby Do you fancy your engineering skills?

Have years of watching Bathurst taught you a thing or two about racing lines? On Saturday 5 November a range of hand-built trolleys will hurtle from the cemetery to Butler’s Green using only the power of gravity – and one of them could be yours.

It’s not too late to register for the Arrowtown Trolley Derby, says event organiser Anton Schmitz. To find out more about the race, including specifications and rules, go to the Arrowtown Trolley Derby facebook page.

flower show going strong Every year the Arrowtown Spring Show, which is just seven years shy of its centenary, attracts the cream of Arrowtown’s crop of elite gardeners.

But committee member Wendy Clarke is quick to reassure that this traditional flower show is not just for experts. ‘Anyone can enter,’ she says, ‘even if you know nothing about flowers or flower shows – we will help you!’

The flowers, of course, are at the heart of the show, but there are also sections for crafts and baking and, for the first time this year, photography. For a schedule of award categories go to arrowtownspringshow.com or pick up a paper copy at the museum or the library.

This year Wendy is particularly keen to get Arrowtown’s youngsters involved in the special children’s categories: ‘Do encourage your kids to create or make something. They get such a buzz from seeing their exhibit displayed and if they win an award they will be hooked.’

Even if you don’t have anything to enter, be sure to come along to the Athenaeum Hall on Friday 14 October between 1 and 5 pm to view the fruits of others’ labours and get inspiration for next year. While you’re there you can check out the cakes, sweets, produce, and plants at the old-fashioned Bring and Buy table and indulge in high tea.

Admission is $3 for adults and children are free.

time to elect a new mayor The cut-off date for the elections is fast approaching, with ballot papers needing to be in the electoral officer’s hands by noon on Saturday 8 October. We asked the five mayoral candidates to write a short statement about what they identify as Arrowtown issues.

Al Angus – I intend to bring all the towns outside of Queenstown back together as a district. So we can pool our knowledge, ideas and energy to make our whole district a safe and healthy place to grow up, grow out and grow old. All this divide and conquer carry-on has to stop. Those of us in the outlying towns have had a gutsful of being cash cows for Queenstown and its business elite. It’s time for change and only you have the power.

Let’s send a message that will be heard around the country ENOUGH! Jim Boult – QLDC has a role to play in protecting Arrowtown’s wonderful heritage, while at the same time planning for the future. The pressure on the business district at peak times is a challenge. As a regular in Arrowtown I have noticed the build-up of rubbish and the state of the public toilets. I think QLDC has to lift its game in this regard. As the place I frequent most in the district, Arrowtown will always be a focus of my attention.

Lyal Cocks – It is very important that smaller community issues are addressed and for Arrowtown this includes (but not limited to) getting design guidelines into the DP, implementing the Arrowtown Heritage Lighting Plan, upgrading the car parks on the edge of the town centre, building new public toilets, improving signage, maintaining and renewing trees, providing better rubbish/recycling bins and getting approval for the Government’s UFB2 rollout. I support these projects and will work hard to have them completed over the next three years.

John Mann – I have enjoyed success through connecting with the community including actively sponsoring and supporting local clubs and the Autumn Festival. This ethos will be the cornerstone of my full-time Mayoral commitment. I will develop a Council that is easy to work with and provide opportunities for community groups to have effective input into Council decision making. Reinstating reporting by committees will give more responsibility to your representative to assist in enhancing the special nature and community identity that is Arrowtown.

Roger Tompkins – I’m standing to be mayor of Arrowtown and the QLDC and my platform is Development Without Detriment, Bring Back Beautiful.

I believe the key issues facing Arrowtown are: lack of toilets – let’s get a plan underway to increase and improve facilities to deal with increasing tourism numbers; water quality – I’d like to have a thorough health check on Arrowtown’s water quality; and parking issues – I’ll implement a plan to deal with car and bus parking issues.

arts festival a hit Kerry Andrews of Arrow Events reports that this year’s Arrowtown Arts Festival built on the augural 2015 festival’s success, with people coming from all over New Zealand to attend.

She says the new Origin Speaker Series, which featured conversations between artists and writers, was very well received: ‘It’s definitely on the cards again for next year.’ The same applies to the Off the Wall Arts Trail, which took participants on a tour of local artists’ studios and galleries.

‘The weather was in our favour for Saturday’s community concert Sunday’s artists’ market,’ says Kerry. ‘The streets were buzzing with excitement and many Arrowtown shops had some of the busiest trading days they have had in a while!’

Plated in either shimmering or green patina copper, these feathers will make a beautiful statement. #madeinnewzealand

6 skinless, boneless chicken breasts, pounded flat salt & ground black pepper 6 Tbsp pesto 6 slices streaky bacon Preheat oven to 200ยบC. Lay a chicken piece out flat, and sprinkle with salt and black pepper.

Spread pesto sauce over the chicken and roll the chicken breast in a slice of bacon, securing the roll with toothpicks.

Lay the rolled chicken breast into a baking dish. Repeat with remaining chicken breasts.

Bake in the preheated oven until the chicken is no longer pink inside and the bacon is crisp, about 30 minutes.
