bumper daffodil day Arrowtown has once again proved itself to be a village with a heart, with the community contributing over $8000 to the Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day appeal. Arrowtown coordinator Margaret James says, ‘Arrowtown and the surrounding area never fails to amaze us with their generosity.’ The appeal starts with presales to businesses, then the delivery to them and the street collection day on the Friday. The money collected in the Basin stays here to be used in a range of ways for people, young and old, who have cancer. ‘I would like to thank this wonderful area and the people and lastly my dear helpers collecting for this very worthwhile cause,’ says Margaret.
kapa haka champions Last weekend Queenstown Memorial Centre was buzzing with activity as 11 kapa haka groups competed before a large crowd in the Queenstown Winter Tens competition. The Arrowtown Primary School group Te Roopu Tuakana o Te Kura o Kāmuriwai gained placings in every category in the Junior section, with equal first places for their haka, for their manukura tane (male lead) JD Ries and for their manukura wahine (female lead) Kaiya Collins. They came second in kākahu (uniform), poi and waiata-ā-ringa (action song). These fantastic results are the reward for a huge commitment by the tamariki and their families. They have had weekly practices and a couple of weekend wananga under the guidance of Karen Neill and kapa haka instructors Tetuhi Purakau and Marley Maiava. The group are not resting on their laurels. They will be at Murihiku Polyfest tomorrow, will be fundraising for new uniforms with a hangi and kapa haka night on 17 September, and are heading to Ngā Putangitangi Kapa Haka Competition in Invercargill at the end of October.

vanuatu wood cuts Local art teacher Janelle Aston has returned from a five-week visit to Vanuatu where she led art classes at Epi High School in Vanuatu. In a programme organised by the NZ Epi Island Incentive Trust, Janelle helped the students create relief prints from cardboard and woodblocks. Art is not part of the high-school curriculum because of the lack of qualified art teachers in Vanuatu. So the students have never had been encouraged to express their strong connection with their environment and culture through art. Janelle has brought her students’ work back with her to display in an upcoming exhibition, called Eyes of Vanuatu, at the Lakes District Museum from 9 September to 16 October. The works are for sale and all money raised will go directly back to the school for more art supplies and projects. 5

spring planting season The Wakatipu Reforestation Trust is inviting you to rediscover and reconnect with the native forest that was once bountiful in the Basin and be part of bringing some of it back. The trust is leaping into the spring planting season this September/October and would love for you to come along, hang out and get digging with a jam-packed schedule of Saturday planting days, including four in the Arrowtown area. They will be planting on public land in our backyard – next to the bike Sep 10 – Whitechapel, Arrow River (with BBQ lunch to start the season) trails, where you walk the dog, where the kids play. 250 g (about 2-3) beetroot 1 small Spanish onion, grated 2 Tbsp chopped fresh coriander 2 Tbsp chopped fresh mint ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup walnut oil 2 Tbsp lemon juice ½ cup walnuts, roasted, chopped 2 Tbsp rosewater Steam or boil beetroot until tender (this can take up to an hour). Rub skin gently to peel, then cut into small dice. Place in large bowl and add onion and fresh herbs. In another bowl, combine oils and lemon juice, and season. Toss beetroot and walnuts in dressing; sprinkle with rosewater just before serving.
