With winter on its way, it’s time to crank up the wood burner.

But before you do, here are a few guidelines about heating with wood.

Arrowtown powerlifter Anna Claire Thompson has returned from the StrongMelbourne Strongman Challenge with a first-place finish, a cash prize of AU$500 and a trophy in the shape of a Viking helmet.

In the contest, held in Photo: Grant Williams front of large crowds at a at www.gwplens.com.au Melbourne fitness expo, Anna had to lift a range of unwieldy and extremely heavy objects. Her strongest event was the 70 kg shield carry, which she won by two lengths of the arena, but she found 30 kg monster dumbbell clean and press tricky as she hadn’t been able to practise with the equipment.

Anna won by half a point in the middleweight women’s division, beating out two Aussies who have been competing internationally for six years. ‘Everyone involved was very supportive,’ she says, ‘especially as I was the only Kiwi competing and the first New Zealand woman to travel overseas to compete at Strongman.’

Anna says she wouldn’t be able to compete without help. ‘I’m generously sponsored

by Queenstown Health. Their chiropractor Robbie, who I see at Millbrook, and physio Scott, who I see at The Hills, hold me together to compete at this level.’

Strongman is a fun diversion for Anna, but she will now shift her focus back to powerlifting. Which means less running up and down Jack Reid Park dragging a tyre, and more time doing intensive lifting of weights at Remarkables CrossFit.

• Clean the flue regularly to avoid chimney fires.

• Burn only seasoned dry wood. Burning wet or green wood is less efficient, creates pollution and clogs the flue with creosote, increasing the chance of a chimney fire.

• Remember you can be fined for a smoky fire, even if your burner is a complying model.

• Store ashes in a metal can for five days before throwing out.

The payback for living in a beautiful tree-covered village is having to tidy up all those once golden leaves before winter. For QLDC the timing of the clean-up is crucial in order to avoid mighty problems with blocked drains and slippery footpaths. I know this operation has not gone to plan in the past, and we will be doing our very best to get it right this year.

The Athenaeum Hall is going to be closed for two months over winter for improvements. Its capacity was reduced to 300 in February 2015 after a seismic assessment, and earthquake strengthening will enable the hall to accommodate up to 500 people again. The toilet facilities will also be upgraded and a new heating plant, PA system and ablutions area installed.

A fair number of familiar Arrowtown faces are involved in the Showbiz Queenstown production, set in New York in the Great Depression. your flop-free recipe apple sponge

3–5 apples 50 g butter 1 Tbsp cinnamon 2 eggs 175 g sugar 2 tsp vanilla 85 g butter 125 g plain flour 2½ tsp baking powder 75 ml milk Preheat oven to 200°C. Line cake tin with baking paper.

Peel and cut up apples into eighths.

Fry apple in butter for around 10 minutes. Add cinnamon and fry for another minute, then tip into the cake tin.

In cake mixer, mix all remaining ingredients together.

If mixing by hand add the eggs and sugar first, then vanilla. Melt the butter before adding it, then add flour and baking powder followed by milk.

Pour cake mixture on top of apples, making sure all are covered.

Bake in the oven for 10 minutes, then turn oven down to 180°C and bake for a further 25 minutes.
