it’s festival time! Arrowtown’s golden colours can mean only one thing: the Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival is about to hit town. The packed programme takes place over the long Anzac holiday weekend (21 to 25 April). This will be the 32nd annual event, and the first with a new naming sponsor in Akarua – Central Otago’s largest family-owned winery – which should ensure a truly ‘vintage’ festival this year. Organisers have added new events like the Denim & Diamonds party featuring LA Social Club alongside established festival favourites like the street parade, market day and art exhibition. Brand new for 2016 is a two-day street busking contest where winners get the chance to perform again at Pie, Pint and Pinot on Sunday 24 April. This hugely popular celebration of craft beers and gourmet pies will see some unique malty brews joined by boutique ciders and Akarua’s famous Pinots for the very first time. The annual kids’ scarecrow competition has been expanded with an open category designed to encourage all residents and local business owners to raid their attics and get creative. Festival chair Pam Hulls says it is all about community involvement and creating a fun festival atmosphere around town. ‘This year’s shorter format means there are heaps of activities each day,’ she says. ‘Buy a ticket for the duck race, enter a team for the quiz night or try your luck panning for gold at the national champs. home brew hit Dan Coxhead, restaurant manager at the Fork & Tap, has shown off his brewing skills by coming out on top at the inaugural Smiths Craft Beer House Pints to the People home brewers competition. And soon you’ll have the chance to get a taste of his success! The prescribed style for the contest was IPA, and Dan’s version was judged by Zak Cassels of Cassels & Sons and Steve Nally of Invercargill Brewery to be the best of the bunch. Dan’s not too clear what the secret of his success is, but he did make sure he used plenty of hops to get India Pale Ale’s signature hoppiness. A couple of weeks ago Dan went to Cassels Brewery in Christchurch to brew a batch of his winning IPA. He made 700 litres of beer with the help of brewer (and former world-champion rower!) Daniele Danesin. He found it fascinating to work on a commercial scale. After all for the two years he’s been making home brew he’s never made a batch of more than 30 litres. It was a long hard day but Dan’s not complaining. ‘I loved it!’ he says. Once the IPA is brewed to perfection in a month or so, it will be available for a limited period only at the Fork & Tap and Smiths Craft Beer House, as well as other local outlets and even some pubs in Wellington. 5

The Arrowtown RSA committee has bowed to popular demand to bring back the Anzac Day Tea Dance. Planned as a one-off event for last year’s Gallipoli centenary, this oldfashioned dance gives people the opportunity to come together at the end of Anzac Day to enjoy music from war-time days. The Queenstown Jazz Orchestra is booked to play, along with the Remarkable Trio, Southern Knights Dance Band and local acts the Arrow Entertainers, Buckingham Belles and Arrow Miners Band. The evening’s entertainment starts at 5.30 pm and will run until 9.30 pm. Mann Made Catering is again generously laying on a supper free of charge and Party Plus has donated all the hire equipment. This means tickets will be priced at a very affordable $10. You can buy them at the museum and from Lindsay Stirling of the Arrowtown RSA. BYO drinks.

strong women Anna Claire Thompson is the latest Arrowtown woman who’s getting out there and competing in international sport. Anna, who describes herself as an Photo by Rachel of artist and McNeill Imagery strength athlete, has been accepted to compete against the best Aussie women in the StrongMan Challenge in Melbourne later this month. Over three days of competition she’ll lift massive weights, monster dumbbells and desperately heavy frames using the strength she’s built up as a CrossFit athlete, weightlifter and powerlifter. Stef White, the Arrowtown arborist we profiled a couple of issues ago, has competed in the world championships of tree climbing in Texas, and came a very creditable eighth in the overall standings.

your flop-free recipe curried pumpkin and peas
2 Tbsp unsalted butter 1 medium onion 1 garlic clove 2½ tsp curry powder ½ tsp salt ½ tsp freshly ground pepper 1 kg pumpkin 2 medium red potatoes 1½ cups chicken stock ¾ cup raisins ¾ cup frozen baby peas fresh coriander Heat butter in a large pan over medium-high heat, add chopped onion and cook until golden-brown, about 5 minutes. Add chopped garlic and cook 1 minute more. Stir in curry powder, salt and pepper. Add cubed pumpkin and potatoes and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Pour in stock and raisins, cover and reduce heat to medium. After 15 minutes add peas. Replace cover and continue to cook until pumpkin and potatoes are tender, 5 to 10 minutes more.
